POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JUNE 30, 1905. VOL. XXII., No. 2244. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to tliem, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. .4. remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. C. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. CONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Sew Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13 Announcements concerning persons missing can only be accepted on pay- ment; and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. SPECIAL NOTICE. IN certain cases questions have arisen as to the payment for photographs applied for by Police Forces under Home Office circular of 15th March, 1897. The Registrar of Habitual Criminals is therefore authorised by the Secretary of State to say that, in any ordinary case, a photograph is not necessary to enable his Department to identify a prisoner, the finger prints alone being sufficient for the purpose; but if a photograph is applied for, or if, in any rare case, it should be re- quired to complete the identification, the cost will be charged to the Police Force interested. Warrant issued. 3.— E Division.— For stealing a quantity of bottled wines, spirits, beer, and mineral waters while employed as ship's storekeeper, during Feb ruary, March, and April last— WILLIAM JAMES CURRALL, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion ruddy, hair light brown, eyes light blue, wears glasses when reading or writing; dress, blue serge suit, P. & O. cap. A sailor; native of Leith. May be found at Southampton, Cardiff, Hull, or Leith. Warrant issued. 4.- F Division. — For stealing £ 15, 19th inst. — WILLIAM GEORGE EVANS, alias WILLIAM EVANS, Office No. 1520- 03, age 19, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes ( blind right) brown, right shoulder droops; dress, brown jacket suit and cap. A labourer; native of London. Sentenced at North London Sessions, 21st July, 1903, to 3 months hard labour for housebreaking. Liberated 20th Oc- tober, 1903. Warrant issued. 5.— 5 Division*— For forging and utter- ing a cheque and obtaining £ 40, 19th inst, also for absconding while on licence from Herts Re- formatory School, Ware— RAYMOND GIL- BERT, age 17, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes brown; dress, dark grey jacket suit and cap, lace boots with square toes. A native of Cricklewood. Supposed accompanied by his Brother, age 15, height 4 ft. 11 in., stout build, complexion fair, round face, hair brown, eyes blue, stutters badly, throws his head back when speaking; dress, grey suit and cap. 6.— X Division.— For stealing 9 .£ 5 Bank of England notes; £ 11 10s.; and two deposit notes ( stopped)— HENRY ROCHELL, age 32, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, thin face, hair light, clean shaved, eyes blue, cut scar left cheek; dress, dark brown check suit, fawn colour overcoat, white straw hat. A native of near Bradford, Yorkshire. Is a Reservist of the 1st West Riding Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BERKSHIRE. 1— Hunger ford ( County).— For obtain- ing 2 grey flannel tennis suits, sizes 5 and 6, by false pretences, 10th inst.— J. REDMAN, age 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh ( sunburnt), hair light ( inclined to sandy), appearance of a mechanic; dress, navy blue serge suit, black hard felt hat. Supposed a native of Nottingham. He called on a tradesman and represented that he was a brother of a customer. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Day, Hungerford. BRECONSHIRE. 8. — Ystradgynlais { County). — For attempted carnal knowledge of a girl, age 15— ANDREW MIECLE, a Scotchman, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., rather stout build, complexion fair, round full face, hair and moustache light brown, addicted to drink. A collier, has been a shepherd, also a seaman. Absconded 11th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hand, Ystradgynlais. BUCK INC HA MS HIRE. 9. — High Wycombe { Borough.). — For stealing from his lodgings, 9th inst., a lady's silver Geneva watch, white face, black numerals, chased; and a leather wrist strap— WILLIAM PALMER, alias — LEE ( supposed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved; wearing dark brown mixture coat and vest, dark cap, light boots. Ap- pearance of a stableman. Supposed wanted else- where. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Head Constable Sparling, High Wycombe. 10— High Wy combo ( Borough).— ROBERT ARNOLD, Case No. 14, 23rd inst., not now wanted. Warrant withdrawn. CHESHIRE. 11.— Liscard { County).— For stealing £ 4 from his lodgings at Egremont, 21st insit. — JOSEPH HUGH COLQUITT, age about 28, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark; dress, black and white striped suit, dark tie, black hard felt hat, " Oxford" inside, lacs boots. He served 12 years in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McDonald, Liscard. DEVONSHIRE- 12.— Dovonport ( Borough).— For obtain- ing by false pretences, 19th inst., a dark leather oblong case, about 5 in. by 2i in., red lining, marked inside horse- shoe and containing a meerschaum pipe, 1 briar do., " Parnell, Devon- port," on stem, 1 cigar holder, 1 cigarette holder, all amber mouthpieces and silver mounted — ARCHIE ST. DORSETSHIRE. 13.— Portland ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, a watch and chain ( recovered, pledged at Bath) and a gold ring, snake pattern— FRED ANDERSON, age about 40, height 5ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( curly in front) light brown, eyes rather small, eczema between right thumb and fore finger; dress, blue diagonal serge jacket, dark vest ( double breasted) with blue spots, dark trousers with white strioes, bowler hat, light lace boots. A stone mason; supposed native of Aston, Birmingham. Warra it issued. Information to Supt. Ricketts, Portland. ESSEX. 14.— Grays {( bounty).— For mis- appropriat- ing £ 6 13s., monies of the Tilbury Progressive Working Men's Club and Institute, 15th April last— ADAM MARTIN, age about 50, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair, heavy moustache and full beard brown ( turning grey), wears glasses, has a habit of taking snuff; dress old morning coat and vest, dark trousers, old lace boots. A tally clerk. May be found working at Docks. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Grays. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. lb. — Cheltenham ( County). — For em- bezzlement— FRED SMITH ( see Case No. 13, 3rd June, 1904). He is identical with a Man who calls upon farmers in answer to advertisements, states he has been an instructor at the Boys' Orphanage, Cheltenham, and obtains money to enable him to return for his clothing and deferred pay. He has been traced to Herefordshire, South Wales, and on 12th inst. was at Dinder, near Wells, Somerset; dress, dark mixture coat and vest ( double breasted), trousers of a shade lighter material, black tie, brown mixture cap, military boots. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Cheltenham. HAMPSHIRE. 16 — Basingstoke ( OfnintuX — For em- bezzlement— WILLIAM McLENNAN, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, com- plexion, hair, and moustache dark ( turning grey), may now be clean shaved, takes short, quick steps, carries his head forward, reserved manner; dress, dark jacket suit, black bowler hat, lace boots. Is fond of horse racing. Lately employed as manager at a mineral water works; previously as a barman. Absconded 24th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hale, Basingstoke. 17.— Bournemouth ( County).— Fcr fail- ing to surrender to bail at Bournemouth Police Court, 11th inst., charged with larceny— AGNES MALARKY, age 32, height 5 ft. H in., com- plexion pale, hair brown, eyes blue; dress, black coat and skirt, black sailor hat. A laundress; native of Newbury, Berks. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hack, Bournemouth. 18 — Gosport ( County).— For stealing £ 2 from her lodgings— A WOMAN, age about 19, height about 5 ft. 1 in., complexion sallow, hair dark, eyes blue, eczema on fingers; dress, black bodice and skirt, long tweed sac jacket, white straw hat with wide brim, black band, wearing small imitation silver brooch, shape of bird. Information to Supt. Cottle, Gosport. HEREFORDSHIRE. 19. — Hereford! ( County). — For stealing, 24th inst., at Longtown, a brown jacket, nearly new, usual pockets— A MAN, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion sunburnt, hair ( turn- ing grey) and moustache dark; dress, old dark jacket, cotton cord trousers, billycock hat or cap, carried a light green coat and the stolen one. A tramping labourer, seeks employment at farm houses. Information to Supt. Cope, Hereford. KENT. 20— Gravosend ( Borough).— For forging a medical certificate of death— A MAN, who gave the name of ARTHUR PIERCEFIELD WALTERS, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion swarthy, appearance of a heavy drinker, hair turning grey, moustache dark, slouch- ing gait, slightly knock kneed right leg. Stated he was a surgeon. Wan- ant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Gravesend. 21— Tun bridge Wells ( Borough).— For stealing i,' 100, 16th ult.— ERNEST PRING, age 29, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair brown, slight moustache light, eyes grey, addicted to drink; dress, grey square cut coat, blue serge jacket and vest, grey trousers, red, white, and blue striped neckerchief, grey cap, lace boots. A native of Tunbridge Wells. Was discharged as medically unfit from the 4th Mountain Battery Royal Artillery at Newport, Mon. May be found in company of prostitutes. Warrant issued. Information to Chieif Constable Prior, Tun- bridge Wells. LANARKSHIRE. 22.— Glasgow ( City).— Eor stealing £ 31 13s. 6d. from his lodgings— GEORGE DUNCAN, age 17, height about 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair light, of rustic appearance; dress, brown check tweed suit, light check cap. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. 23.— Glasgow ( City). — For obtaining 4 gold watches by fraud, 16th inst. — JAMES NAPIER, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion fresh, pimples on face, hair and slight moustache dark, of retiring disposition; dress, blue serge suit, brown boots. An auctioneer's olerk. Warrant issued. 24.— Glasgow ( City).—¥ or embezzling £ 65, between 24th April last and 13th inst,— GEORGE MILLAR, age 25, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, sharp features, hair dark brown, reddish moustache, several front upper teeth missing, scar left side of chin, addicted to drink. A stock- broker's manager; supposed a native of Edinburgh. Absconded 3rd inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. 25.— Lancaster ( Borough).— J or failing to report— Licence- holder JAMES LINFORD, alias CLAYTON and LINDFORD, Office No. 3485- 02, age 63, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown ( turning grey, bald in front), eyes blue, 2 scars centre of forehead, abscess scar under right jaw. A labourer; native of Wigan. Sentenced a. t Liverpool Assizes, 27th November, 1897, to 5 years penal servitude for burglary. Liberated on 2nd licence, 3rd June, 1905. SX 230. NORFOLK. 26.— Harling ( County).— For deserting his children, leaving them chargeable to the Common Fund of the Wayland Union— WILLIAM HALL, age 44, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion ruddy, hair light brown, eyes grey, shuffling gait, turns one foot outwards, addicted to drink; dress, black square cut jacket suit, small red braid tie, black peak cap, strong lace boots. A railway carman; native of Attleborough. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lowe, Harling. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 27— Mansfield ( County^.— For failing to report — Licence- holder NATHAM GILES, Office No. 1376- 04, age 60, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( bald on top), moustache, side whiskers, and eyes grey, scar over right eyebrow, back of neck, and outside left forefinger; usually well dressed. A commission agent; native of Branston, Licolnshire. Sentenced at Nottingham City Assizes, 30th November, 1900, to 3 years penal servitude for wounding. Licenced 1st Sep- tember, 1904. a 377. Hensley, Mansfield. 28.— Nottingham ( City).— For stealing ( by trick), between 13th and 16th ult., a new walnut cottage piano, flowered front, " Wilbye" inside fall which covers keyboard, " 15759 " inside on bridge under covered strings, " 9005 " on left in- side, half top, single sconces — BENJAMIN HEAPS, age 38, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., stiff build, complexion fresh, oval face, hair and mous- tache dark, of good address, military appearance; dress, dark morning coat suit, black bowler hat. He took lodgings, remained a fortnight, after- wards took a house and represented to a firm of pianoforte dealers that he had just arrived from Blackpool, and obtained the piano on the hire purchase system. Was accompanied by a Woman, age 28, height 5 ft. 3 in., slight build, complexion pale. Appeared to be pregnant. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Clay, Notting- ham. OXFORDSHIRE. 29.— Oxford ( City).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, 3rd inst.— COUNT KURD YON SPARR, age 33, height 5 ft. 10 in. to 6 ft., slight build, complexion pale, hair light brown ( turning grey), moustache short at ends and brushed up; dress, blue serge suit, hard felt hat, large boots, of shabby genteel appearance. Supposed a German. Is also suspected of stealing a gold double case keyless watch ( can be made to strike hours), No. " 19384 " stamped inside case. He was accompanied by Two Men ( 1st, age 18 to 20, height 5 ft. 8 to 10 in., complexion fair, slight moustache light; wearing frock coat and hard felt hat. 2nd, age 18 to 22, height about 5 ft. 2 in., slight moustache black; dress, black suit, striped cap. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Cole, Oxford. SUSSEX ( East). 30. — Hastings ( Borough).— For stealing, 20th inst., a " Wilson " safety bicycle, 26 in. frame, 28 in. wheels, enamelled black, usual parts plated, " Wilson " transfer on head, flat handle bars, cel- luloid grips, jointless hollow rims, black centres, Clipper back tyre, " Fair wear and tear " on front tyre, Burford front brake, Eadie back pedalling brake on hind wheel— — WARREN, age about 19, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion dark, slight foreign accent; dress, dark jacket suit and cap. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Hastings. WARWICKSHIRE. 31.— Nuneaton ( County).— For stealing £ 1 8s. from his lodgings, 24th inst.— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved; wearing fawn colour suit, grey cap. Appearance of a groom. He took lodgings, 24th inst., and asked to be allowed to go to the bedroom for the purpose of arranging a bandage on shoulder. Is identical with William Palmer, Case No. 15, and — Palmer, Case No. 51, 23rd inst. Information to Supt. Evans, Nuneaton. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 62. — Keighley ( County).— For poisoning water in a beck with intent to destroy fish therein — EDMUND ASTI. E, age 36, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, heavy moustache, eyes brown; dress, dark jacket and vest, cord trousers, scarf, cap, clogs. A native of Silsden, Yorkshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Tebbutt, Keighley. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 33 — R Division. — Remanded till 3rd prox., charged with unlawful possession of an " Ariel " bicycle, No. 40806, cross frame, upturned handle bars, green and white grips, free wheel, rat trap pedals, 26 in. wheels, plated rims, Crabbe brakes, Brooks's B18 saddle, enamelled black, picked out green and gold, black celluloid pump and small bell attached — FRANK BUCK- THORPE, age 19, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes brown, anchor and heart left forearm, heart and dots right forearm; dress, grey mixture suit, grey cap, lace boots ( mili- tary pattern). A native of London. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BRECONSHIRE. M— Crick Howell ( County).— Remanded till Petty Sessions, 4th prox., charged with larceny from lodgings — HENRY WILLIAMS, age 23, height 5 ft. 5} in., slight build, complexion very dark, hair black and curly, eyes grey, cut scar left eyebrow, large cut scar root left thumb, burn scars right forearm; dress, dark grey suit, grey cap, rubber collar and front, lace boots. States he is a native of London, usually employed as ostler. Sentenced at Cardiff Quarter Sessions, 6th January, 1903, to 5 months imprisonment for attempted rape. Supposed convicted elsewhere. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 35. — V Division*— Escaped from custody of police, 23rd inst., while being conveyed to Kings- ton Police Station, on committal for trial at Kingston Quarter Sessions for larceny, person ( snatching)— JOHN LEACH, alias WILLIAM LEACH, JOHN PRESTON, and JOHN ROSAM, Office No. 200- 98, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., oom- METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICJ £ 20 REWARD. 36.— IV Division. — For falsification of accounts, and embezzling £ 2,000 — WILLIAM CURTIS RATTENBERRY, alias WILLIAM CURTIS, age 48, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown ( turning grey), may be clean shaved, eyes grey, slight twitch in eyes, very noticeable when in conversation; dress, black morning coat and vest, light trousers, black hard felt hat. A native of Plymouth. Was employed as Secretary to the London, Glouces- tershire and North Hants Dairy Company, Limited. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. Lloom- field, Managing Director to the above company, Canterbury Road, Brixton, to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension of Rattenberry. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. plexion fresh, full face, hair light brown, mous- tache ginger, eyes grey, may be growing a beard; dress, dark brown tweed suit, black hard felt hat, lace boots. He left Ironbridge, 6th March last, and has been traced to several towns in Scotland and North of England, thence to Bir- mingham, Reading, and Winchester. In some places he attempted to nurchase motor cars and cycles, at others he represented himself as a motor car driver, obtained food and lodgings at temper ance and other hotels.
