All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 8 Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. I. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if lufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of Us. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. o nr s. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual / orm, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning persons missing can only be accepted on pay- ment; and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. THE EDITOR, New Scotland Yard, London, S. W. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police the Photographs and descrip- tive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, Ac., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1— Criminal Investigation De- partment.— For obtaining 12s. by falsa pre- tences, 19th ult. COOPER, alias THOMAS GORDON, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald) grey, eyes blue, speaks with slight North Country accent; wearing dark clothes and cap. He sends letters purport- ing to be written by a well- known officer of the Army or Navy residing in the Provinces to officers in London, to the effect that a situation has been found for him in the country, and requesting them to advance him his railway fare, which will be re- funded by writer. On the following day he calls at the address of the person to whom the letter has been forwarded, and states he has received a letter directing him to call for the railway fare. Warrant issued. 2.— A Division.— For stealing from his lodgings, 9th inst., a blue serge suit; 1 dark suit; 3 jackets and vests; 1 pair striped trousers; 2 white shirts; 2 merino undershirts; 1 pair brown shoes; 1 razor; and a 2 in. smoothing nlane — Licence- holder HARRY STRONG, alias GEORGE LOCK, Office No. 1556- 01, age 33, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion dark, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes hazel, scar right temple, mole right forearm. A bootmaker; native of Reading. Sentenced at Hants Quarter Sessions at Aldershot, 31st Decern ber, 1901, to 3 years penal servitude and remanet of former sentence, for burglary. Licenced 3rd January, 1905. Y b 325. ( See Case No. 3.) 3.— A Division.— For being concerned with Harry Strong ( see Case No. 2) in stealing clothing, & c. ( described therein) — CLARA STRONG, age 24, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fair, hair Iighf, eves blue, subject to fits; dress, black jacket, dark skirt, brown fur boa, dark tam- o'- shanter. A native of Reading. 1— A Division.— For obtaining £ 2 by forging and uttering a banker's cheque— Major HENRY HARTLAND HIGGINSON, age 48 to 50, height 5 ft. 9 in., drooping shoulders, com- plexion dark, hair and moustache reddish brown, eyes hazel, large nose, low voice; dress, dark jacket suit, hard felt hat, shabby genteel appear- ance. A native of London. Warrant issued. •">.— E Division.— For obtaining money by false pretences— FREDERICK YOUNG, age 38, height 5 ft. 8 in., very stout build, complexion fresh, hair black, eyes grey, takes short quick steps; dress, dark blue serge jacket suit, silk hat. Supposed a native of Australia. He advertised in the daliy papers for agents, from whom he ob- tained £ 50 as security, by representing that he was the proprietor and trading as The Durham Publishing House, 84 South wick Road, Sunder- land; Kingsley Chambers, 43 Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland; 25 Portland Place, Carlisle; and 1 New Street, Lancaster. Warrant issued. 6.— E Division.— For stealing, 13th inst., 4 insurance policies on the Wesleyan and General Insurance Company, Birmingham— ROSE MET- CALF, nee SHATWELL, age 22, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair ( thick) light brown, eyes blue; dress, long grey coat, large lace col- larette, drab colour costume, black hat trimmed black plumes, of theatrical appearance. A chorus singer and dancer; native of Manchester. Pro- fessionally known as Queenie St. Clair, which name she uses on cards for the purpose of obtaining ad- mission to theatres. Warrant issued. 7.— S Division. — For stealing £ 43 — EDWARD CLAUD MACKRORY, age 17, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, scar on forehead, 1 right upper tooth grow- ing outwards; dress, dark tweed jacket suit and cap, lace boots. A native of Slough. Warrant issued. 8— X Division.— For larceny ( lodgings) — FREDERICK SIMONS, age 33, height 5 ft, 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, indistinct marks in blue ink on left forearm; dress, brown jacket and vest, cord trousers, brown cap, lace boots. Supposed a native of London. May be found working on the new railway near Cromer. — ELLENS DYARS, age 25, height 5 ft. 2£ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, cut scar right forearm; dress, brown jacket, black dress and hat. Supposed a native of London. May be found cohabiting with above. Both ab- sconded from bail. Warrants issued. 9.— X Division.— For stealing two £ 5 Bank of England notes, and £ 3 — ARTHUR REGINALI) TREVELYAN PHILLIPS, age 18, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion, hair, and eyes ( large) dark; dress, black jacket and vest, dark grey trousers, pepper and salt colour overcoat, black hard felt hat, lace boots. A native of London. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BEDFORDSHIRE. 10.— Bedford ( Borough).— For embezzle- ment — ALFRED RICHARDS, age about 27, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, thin oval face, hair brown, slight moustache light: dress, blue serge suit, check cap, lace boots. For some months he was engaged as manager of a branch coal office. Absconded about the end of May. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Thody, Bedford. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 12.— Beacons field ( County).— For fail- ing to report — Licence- holder ARTHUR ANDREWS, alias HENRY WALKER, Office No. 1012- 96, age 49, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair ( bald in front, thin on top) light brown, eyes light blue, scar on nose, left eyebrow, back left wrist, and right hand. A painter; native of France. Sentenced at Middlesex Sessions, 9tli January, 1897, to 9 years penal servitude and remanet of former sentence for housebreaking. Liberated on licence, 30th March, 1905, which expires 25th December, 1907. L Q X 543. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Marks, Beaconsfield. 13. — Slough ( County). — For stealing property described in Case No. 61, 16th inst. — JOHN JAMES ASTOR ( supposed false), age about 30, height about 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion fresh, full face, slight moustache light; dress, slate colour suit, bowler hat, carried a brown waterproof coat. Stated he was a bookmaker. The gold watch and chain ( recovered, pledged at Chelsea). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearman, Slough. 14. — High Wycombe ( Borough). — For embezzling £ 16— ROBERT ARNOLD, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes supposed brown; dress, dark blue serge suit, black bowler hat, carried a brown portmanteau. A butcher's manager. Absconded 12th inst. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 15. — High Wycombe ( Borough). — For stealing from his lodgings, 9th inst., a lady's silver Geneva watch, white face, black numerals, chased; and a leather wrist strap— WILLIAM PALMER, alias — LEE ( supposed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved; wearing dark brown mixture coat and vest, dark cap, light boots. Ap- pearance of a stableman. Supposed wanted else- where. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Head Constable Sparling, Higl: Wycombe. DERBYSHIRE. 20.— Chesterfield ( County).— For steal- ing, 10th inst., at Shirebrook, a lady's 18 ct. gold dress ring, set 3 rubies and 6 diamonds; 1 9 ct. gold signet ring, heart shape, " W. C." engraved thereon; 1 gold pin, heart shape, rose in centre; 1 gold double curb Albert, small pattern, gold heart shape pendant (" W. Clarke" engraved on back) and 1 silver match box ( engraved " W. C.") attached; 1 lady's long gold curb chain; and £ 8 — ARTHUR PERCIVAL, alias WATSON, age 19, height 5 ft. 3J in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, girl, bear, Maltese cross tattooed left arm, flower and pot, 3 rings hanging from a bar, " Dear Florrie," " Horace," pierced heart, yacht, rose, bracelet, dogs, wreath, woman left forearm, angel, soldier, ballet girl, flags, bird right arm, flag in hand, ballet girl, monument, sailor, flags, yacht, two flowers, dove, bust of girl, " Faith, Hope, and Charity" right forearm, also tat- tooed on legs and body; dress, black vicuna suit with raised check, grey cap, blue tie. A native of Bulwell, Notts. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Faulkner, County Police Office, Chesterfield. 21.— Derby ( County).— Yor forgprv at Mat- lock Bridge— EDGAR STANLEY AULTON, age 32 to 34, height 6 ft., complexion rather muddy, hair light brown, sometimes wears a shade over left eye, speaks quickly and loosely, running the words together. A native of Derby. Recently seen at Sheffield, Burton- on- Trent, and in London. ( See Case No. 29, 6th March, 1903.) Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, County Police Office, Derby. DORSETSHIRE. 22.-— Portland { County).— For stealing from his lodgings, a watch and chain ( recovered, pledged at Bath) and a gold ring, snake pattern— FRED ANDERSON, age about 40, height 5ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( curly in front) light brown, eyes rather small, eczema between right thumb and fore finger; dress, blue diagonal serge jacket, dark vest ( double breasted) with blue spots, dark trousers with white strines, bowler hat, light lace boots. A stone mason; supposed native of Aston, Birmingham. Warra it issued. Information to Supt. Ricketts, Portland. South Africa, that he had a mine and 13,000 acres of land at Zambesi, advertised for a manager and two carpenters to return with liim, from whom he obtained money, which he promised to return to them on arrival at Durban. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Thorpe- le- Soken. FLINTSHIRE. 27. — Mold ( County). — For larceny — CHARLES TAYLOR, alias THOMAS BLAKE and EVANS, age about 35, height 5 ft. 61 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, mole right side of neck near shoulder; dress, grey mixture tweed coat and vest with pale blue stripe, khaki trousers, black tie, black and white check cap, canvas boots. Is a private, No. 8769, of the R. Welsh Fusiliers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Davies, Mold. OA M BRIDGES HIRE. 16.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For obtain" ing £ 1 10s. by false pretences, 31st ult.— ALFRED MILLER, age 60 to 65, height 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion pale, short hair and moustache grey, ad- dicted to drink; dress, grey jacket and trousers, light washable vest, white straw hat with black band, lace boots, carries a stick. He was em- ployed as agent by a London firm of wine shippers and brokers. Absconded 5th inst. Warrant issued. 17.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For obtain- ing food and lodgings bv false pretences, also for larceny from lodgings, 2nd inst.— FREDERICK ARNOLD, alias DODDS, age 29, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion sallow, hair brown; dress, blue serge suit, dark cap, boots. A native of Her- ringswell, near Mildenhall. He obtains lodgings at private and public houses, and commits larceny. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Holland, Cam- bridge. CA RNA R VONSHIRE. 18.— Carnarvon ( County).— For embezzl ing £ 100 — HENRY McCABE age 33, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved, aquiline nose, small sunken mouth, lower jaw prominent, pointed chin, addicted to drink; dress, light jacket suit and cap, carried a mackin tosh. A clerk; native of Carnarvon. Was em- ployed by the Penyrorsedd Slate Quarry Company. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Griffith, Carnarvon. 19. — Pwllheli ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) a bicycle ( recovered) — WILLIAM THOMAS, age 25 to 30, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion swarthy, hair and eyes ( rather small) dark, rather slovenly appearance; dress, blue serge suit and cap. A seaman; native of Bangor. Has served in the Militia. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Pwllheli. ESSEX. 23.— Chelmslord ( Crunty).— For failing to report — Licence- holder WILLIAM WOOD- WARD, alias GEORGE COOPER and JOHN LEE, Office No. 1228- 02, age 39, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, scar over left eye, nose and 3rd right finger deformed, full- rigged ship right forearm, " W. BILL" left, cross flags back right hand, pierced heart and thistle right, 2 anchors left wrist. A carpenter; native of London. Sentenced at Chelmsford Quarter Sessions, 7th January, 1903, to 3 years penal servitude for larceny. Licenced 20th April last. d 28. To be dealt with where found. Information to the Deput- Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 24.— Grays ( County).— For mis- appropriat- ing £ 6 13s., monies of the Tilbury Progressive Working Men's Club and Institute, 15th April last— ADAM MARTIN, age about 50, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair, heavy moustache and full beard brown ( turning grey), wears glasses, has a habit of taking snuff; dress old morning coat and vest, dark trousers, old lace boots. A tally clerk. May be found working at Docks. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Grays. 25. — Harwich ( County) — For obtaining £ 16, by fraud, at Parkeston, 4th inst.— A CALLENDAR, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair ( turning grey), moustache and eyes dark, of Jewish appearance, can speak several languages; dress, dark blue suit, peak cap with pilot's badge in front. Represents himself as Scotchman. A shipping tourist agent. May have in his possession a saloon pass to Great Eastern Railway Company's Doats. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Lunniss, Harwich. 26.— Thorpe- le- Soken i County i.— For obtaining £ 50 by false pretences at Clacton, 16th February last— F. ARMAND FLEXMAN, age 55 to 60, height 5 ft. 11 in., broad shoulders, com- plexion fair, thin face, hair light brown, and thin whiskers and moustache ( turning grey), eyes ( small) grey, front teeth missing, of smart ap- pearance ; dress, light morning suit, blue over- coat, black hard felt hat, sometimes a silk hat, usually wears two gold rings ( one a wedding ring the other a curb ring) on one finger of each hand. He took a furnished house, represented that he was in the employ of the Government in Rhodesia, GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 28. — Cheltenham ( County). — For em- bezzlement— FRED SMITH ( see Case No. 13, 3rd June, 1904). He is identical with a Man who calls upon farmers in answer to advertisements, states he has been an instructor at the Boys' Orphanage, Cheltenham, and obtains money to enable him to return for his clothing and deferred pay. He has been traced to Herefordshire, South Wales, and on 12th inst. was at Dinder, near Wells, Somerset; dress, dark mixture coat and vest ( double breasted), trousers of a shade lighter material, black tie, brown mixture cap, military boots. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Cheltenham. 29 — Bristol ( City).— For stealing 10s from his lodging, 6th inst.— EDGAR JAMES DOBLE, alias COLEMAN and HUMPHRIES, age 22, height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair light brown, lancer mounted on right fore- arm, butterfly right wrist, spray and flowers, in- distinct letters, woman's head with flag and ' Alice" underneath, on left forearm, star be- tween left thumb and forefinger, ring on 2nd and 4tli left fingers, of smart appearance; dress, grey coat and trousers, soft cord vest, grey cap, may be wearing breeches and brown leggings. A groom. Has served in the King's Royal Rifle Corps. Sen- tenced to 6 months imprisonment at Wiltshire Assizes, 2nd June, 1904, for stealing jewellery at Swindon. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 30. — Aldershot ( County). — For stealing, 28th ult., at Ewshott Camp, 2 suits ( 1 a light grey tweed jacket suit; other recovered); and a pair of brown boots— A MAN, age 25, height 5 ft. 8J in., complexion fresh, hair black, eyes brown, red mark right cheek, scar right knee; wearing the stolen clothing, grey cap. A native of Bally, co. Antrim. Is a gunner of the Royal Field Artillery. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. 31. — Basingstoke ( County). — For burglary, 9th inst., and stealing 100 small cart- ridges; 1 new shoe brush— A MAN, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache dark; dress, dark blue suit, dark cap, carried a stick and umbrella. Is no doubt in possession of keys. He is wanted at Chichester, Alton, Chippenham, & c., for burglary. Had in his possession a small 5 cham- bered revolver ( stolen at Chichester). Warrant issued. 32. — Basingstoke ( County).— For em- bezzling £ 46 14s. 3d., 17th inst. — HARRY MASON, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion fair, moustache light, eyes grey, pock marks on nose and face, teeth black and decayed in upper jaw; dress, dark grey striped jacket suit, bow tie, black bowler hat. He an- swered an advertisement and obtained a situation as a builder's clerk, gave false references and address. Stated he came from London. On 17th inst. he was entrusted with a cheque to cash, which he did and absconded. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hale, Basingstoke. 33.— Bournemouth ( CountyV— For fail- ing to report— Licence- holder HENRY HAMIL- TON, alias THOMAS F. H. WILKINSON, HOWARD W. FORTESCUE, and HENRY F. G. NAPIER, Office No. 3685- 97, Case No. 1, current issue, age 63, height 5 ft. in., com- plexion fresh, hair turning grey, eyes brown, scar bottom lip. A doctor ( foreign degree); native of Canterbury. Sentenced at Bournemouth Quarter Sessions, 20th January, 1903, to 3 years penal servitude, for obtaining books and credit by false pretences. Licenced 25th April last. T d 78. Information to Supt. Hack, Bournemouth. FRIDAY, APRIL 28, 1905.
