POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MARCH 3, 1905. VOL. XXII., No. 2210. EGUL I. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. A. TIONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form; and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment; and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. A bootmaker; native of Brighton. Represents that he has a son em- ployed as a warder at Brixton Prison. Sentenced at West Sussex Sessions, 9th April, 1896, to 6 months hard labour for larceny. 44. A YRSHIRE. 6 — Ayr { County).— For fraud, at Irvine. 28th January last— JANE LEADER or GIL- MOUR, age 45, height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, com- plexion ruddy, hair dark brown, eyes brown, English dialect, very talkative, scars: ( supposed from burns) on face; dress, black dress, short black cape, black bonnet. She obtained £ 2 10s. 6d. from a solicitor by representing that her husband had recently died and left £ 232 in the Post Office Savings Bank, and other property. Is identical with CATHERINE YOUNG, or RODDIE, pre- viously convicted of similar offences at Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Kirkcaldy. Warrant issued. 7 — Ayr ( County).— For scaling at Troon, 21st ult., 2 £ 5 British Linen Co.' s Bank notes; 1 £ 5 and 5 £ 1 bank notes— JOHN McGREGOR, age 17, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey or blue, slouching gait; dress, dark brown tweed jacket suit with red lines, raised seams, two pockets ( top ones have flaps and buttons) on each breast of jacket and vest, trousers tight fitting below knees, dark brown or light colour tweed cap with long peak, raised seams, light tie, light lace boots. BERKSHIRE. 8. — Reading ( Co mty).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences and stealing a gold ring, " J. B." engraved thereon, and £ 4 15s., at Pangbourne, 27tli ult.— HENRY CROWSON, alias BROOKS, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 in., thin face, hair dark brown, clean shaved, bad teeth, abscess mark left jaw, walks rather badly; dress, dark grey cutaway coat, plaid vest with round buttons fastened with links, dark trousers with light stripes, blue tie, hard bowler hat, lace boots. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Davis, Reading. CHESHIRE. $.— MiddlBwich ( County).— For embezzl- ing £ 50 12s., lst December, 1904— THOMAS EARLAM, age 55 or 56, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers ( straggling) and eyes brown, top lip and chin clean shaved, stoops I slightly, frequently pouts his lips when in con- j versation, addicted to drink, is fond of talking matters relating to law; dress, black coat suit, light colour rainproof overcoat, dark tie, black hard , felt hat, light lace boots. Carried a black patent leather handbag about 22 by 14 in., containing black suit. A native of Leftwich, Cheshire. Was employed as an assistant overseer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. CUMBERLAND. 10.— Brampton ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Longtown Union, on or about 2nd June, 1904 — JAMES JOHNSTON, age 36, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., square shoulders, inclined to stoop, com- plexion pale, moustache light, may now be clean shaved, addicted to drink. Frequents the com- pany of betting men. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lancaster, Brampton. GL OUCES TERSHIRE. 11. — Bristol (° ity) — For obtaining, by false pretences, 9th ult., 6J yards of suiting; 2f yards of fancy vest material; 12 yards of blue serge — JAMES JEFFERIES, age 38, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, complexion pale, thin mous- tache brown, one or two front teeth missing, long neck. A tailor. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HER TFORDSHIRE. 12- St. Albans ( City). — For obtaining money by false pretences, 23rd ult.— A MAN, age 30 to 33, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., well built, com- plexion dark; wearing dark grey overcoat, black hard felt hat, pince- nez with gilt rims. He calls on persons, represents that he belongs to a local firm of photographers, who have brought out a new process in photography, and to advertise same they will enlarge portraits free of charge; after obtaining avphotograph for enlargement he solicits an order for a frame and obtains a deposit. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Smith, St. Albans. KENT. 13.— Sandwich ( County). — For stealing, about 28th January last, at Broadstairs St. Peters, Thanet, a banker's cheque ( recovered); 1 gold brooch, star shape, pearl in centre, photograph of an elderly gentleman at back— CHARLOTTE BROUGHTON, age about 30, height about o ft. 3 in., complexion fair, thin face, high cheek bones, hair ( thin) brown, worn with two rolls behind, eyes ( large) blue; dress ( supposed) dark grey skirt, 2 plain frills around bottom edge with black braid, black three- quarter length jacket, sable necklet, brown straw hat, trimmed bunches of brown silk. Stated she was a nurse. She is also suspected of stealing a half hoop diamond ring, set 5 diamonds; 1 twisted gold ring, true lovers' knot; 2 cameos, worn on wrist; 2 gold lockets ( 1 set pearls); 1 gold safety pin brooch, with two hearts joined together in centre. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( continued)- 14 — West Mailing ( County).— For non- payment of £ 10 9s. maintenance arrears — ALBERT WILLIAM CHAPMAN, age 30, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, slight moustache light, eyes ( large) grey, carries his head forward, turns his left foot in- wards ; dress, dark suit and overcoat, hard felt hat, light lace boots. A commercial traveller. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hoare, West Mailing. LANARKSHIRE. 15.— Glasgow ( City).— For obtaining from the British Linen Co. Bank, on the false repre- sentation that he had been sent by a customer, a cheque book, containing 12 cheques, payable to bearer, Nos. C 18829 to 18840 inclusive, 2 of which he has uttered.— Expiree JOHN MERE- DITH, alias JOHN GRAY, Office No. 359- 03 ( for photograph, See Case No. 38, 8th July, 1904), age 35, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, full face, much tanned, hair dark brown, eyes dark blue ( yellow spots thereon), scar left side of jaw ( close to ear), faint dots between each thumb and fore- finger, mole back of neck. A seaman; native of Aberdeen. On a former occasion he passed a number of cheques ( obtained by similar means) in Hull, London, and in Paris. Sentenced at Liverpool Assizes, 27th November, 1900, to 3 years penal servitude for forgery and fraud. Liberated on 2nd licence, 25th May, 1904, which expired 28th July, 1904. a 438. Warrant issued. LANCASHIRE. 16.— Manchester ( City).— For failing to report— Licence- holder MARY BEATRICE MAN- NING, alias BEATRICE MANNING and MARY SHAW BEELEY, Office No. 2324- 98, age 33, height 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) brown, eyes blue grey, scar right side forehead and temple and back right hand, 3 moles right side neck, 8 artificial teeth in upper jaw, walks slightly lame. A nurse; native of Yorkshire. Sentenced at Central Criminal Court, 30th April, 1900, to 5 years penal servitude for obtaining money and credit by false pretences. Licenced 3rd May, 1904. A 16. 17.— Manchester ( City).— For failing tj report— Licence- holder JOHN KELLY, alias JOHN ROBERTS, Office No. 3160- 00, age 32, height 5 ft. 6£ in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes ( cast in left) brown, scar right side of forehead and each side of chin. A labourer; native of Manchester. Sentenced at Gloucester Quarter Sessions, 26th June, 1901, to 3 years penal servi- tude and remanet of a former sentence for larceny. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. 18. — Oldham ( Borough). — For stealing ( bailee), 22nd ult., a new " Special Swift" light roadster, No. 243813, 23 in. frame, gear 70, free wheel, two hand brakes, Warwick tyres, plated rims, three coil spring saddle, " Special Swift" stamped on head and back mudguard, lamp, pump, bell and tool bag attached— ZACHARIAH COOPER, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair brown; dress, dark suit, hard felt hat. A native of Dudley, Staffs. Warrant issued. 19 — Oldham ( Borough). — For obtaining money by false pretences— JAMES COXON, age 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion dark, hair and moustache black, speaks with North Country accent, of smart appearance; dress, long light brown mixture overcoat, brown tweed suit, light mixture cap, rubber collar. He took stables, ad- vertised in local papers that he had just com pleted a large contract as carrier, and had a number of carts, lorries, horses, & c., for sale. The persons defrauded received an elaborate war ranty with each horse, but on the horses being worked they were found to be worthless. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Oldham. flower, has a child 18 months old, burn scar on right arm. Accompanied by Ramsey's Brother, age 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair and eyes dark, clean shaved. They conjure with cards, plates, kc., at public houses, also play a banjo or guitar ( occasionally in the streets). May be found at race meetings. Warrant issued. LINCOLNSHIRE. 20.— Louth ( Borough).— For obtaining a ban jo by false pretences ( Exchange and Mart)— — DE RAMSEY, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., com plexion pale, hair and eyes dark, clean shaved; dress, dark overcoat and trousers.— — DE RAM SEY ( wife of above), age about 28, height 5 ft 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes blue; dress, grey three- quarter length jacket, tweed skirt, black hat trimmed blue silk and a yellow NOR THA MPTONSHIRE. 21. — Daventry ( County). — For indecent assault— SAMUEL SMEETON, age about 50, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache dark grey, eyes dark, quiet disposition; dress, brown suit, dark grey overcoat, dark tie, black hard felt hat. Late quartermaster- sergeant of the 1st Suffolk Regiment, now on pension. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. , Information to Supt. Brown, Daventry. SHROPSHIRE. 22.— Ludlow ( County).— For obtaining a quantity of rabbits by false pretences, between 11th and 14th January last — ARTHUR THOMAS, age 18, height 5 ft. 8£ in., com- plexion pale, hair black, clean shaved, " A. T.," Union Jack, clasped hands, tattooed left forearm; usually wears dark suit, light overcoat, black felt hat. He had circulars printed, representing him- self as a wholesale fruit and poultry merchant & Cardiff, offered to sell poultry, & c., on commission, received goods, which he disposed of to a dealer, and absconded. Attends race meetings, fairs, and markets, selling cheap jewellery ( usually metal Alberts), which he places in paper and pretends to drop coins therein, thereby deceiving purchasers; also sells grapes and bananas at public markets. Convicted at Liverpool, 28th March, 1904, of larceny ( trick); at Middlesbrough, 6th June, 1904, of false pretences. He was accom- panied by his BROTHER, who is younger and taller, slight build, impediment in speech; dress, usually blue and grey suit, dark overcoat, hard felt hat. ( See Case No. 34, 17th ult.) SOMERSETSHIRE. 2<.— Bath ( City).— For stealing a Bath Club football cap— JACK HEATON, age about 26, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes blue, scar left cheek, woman's face tattooed on left forearm; dress, dark brown suit, light tweed overcoat, plaid cap. Stated he was an electric crane driver, that he had played football for Salford and Northumber- land. Had in his possession several football caps which he stated had been given him by various clubs that he had played for. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bath. S TA FFORDSHIRE. 24.— Lichfield ( County). — For stealing ( bailee), 22nd ult., a pony, trap, and harness ( recovered)— ALBERT JAMES JENKINS, age 35, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair, mous- tache and rather large eyes brown, mole under right ear, 2 small round scars over right eye, scar back of right hand, addicted to drink; dress, black three- quarter length coat, light tweed trousers, dark plaid cap, lace boots. A grocer's assistant or pedlar; native of Birmingham. Previously con- victed of embezzlement at Birmingham. Information to Supt. Barrett, Lichfield. 25. — Longton ( County).— For failing to appear to a summons, 22nd ult., for cruelty to a horse— WILLIAM NOAKES, age 52, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stiff build, complexion fresh, hair dark and moustache turning grey; dress, blue serge suit, brown hard hat, strong lace boots. A farmer; native of Hollington. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Oakden, Longton. 26.— Wolverhampton ( Borough).— F or forgery— FREDERICK JAMES LOWRY, age 30, height about 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair brown, moustache dark brown, eyes grey, of good address; dress, dark grey overcoat and cap, dark trousers. A clerk; native of Wolver- hampton. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Capt. Burnett, Chief Constable, Wolverhampton. YORKSHIRE ( East Riding). 27.— Beverley ( Borough).— For obtaining by false pretences, 23rd ult., a bicycle ( recovered)— GEORGE THEO SCHULZE, age about 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, rather long nose, hair ( worn rather long and low in front) light brown, clean shaved, turns feet outwards, both ankles supposed injured; dress, dark grey suit, cap or black hard hat. An American jockey or groom; supposed a native of Dorchester, Boston, U. S. A. May seek employment in hunting stables or as a valet. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 28.— Bamsiey ( Borough).— For stealing a coat ( recovered)— JOHN LORD, alias JAMES WILSON and JOHN BARRETT, age 32, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, usually clean shaved, horseshoe and indis- tinct marks left forearm, anchor right foreaim, cut mark end of left forefinger, front teeth missing. A native of Rochdale. Is a notorious thief, and has been convicted at Rochdale, Salford, Bolton, Lincoln, Chesterfield, and Stafford. Frequents model lodging houses and low public- houses. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Barnsley. 29.— York ( City). - For stealing, 23rd ult,, a set of billiard balls ( recovered)— A MAN, who gave the name of GEORGE ELDIN, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, moustache sandy, sharp pointed nose; wearing light tweed jacket and cap, dark drab overcoat, carried a silver mounted ash stick. Had in his possession cards bearing the name of " George Edlin." May be found billiard marking. Information to Chief Constable Burrow, York. PERSON SJN_ CUSTODY. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 30.— Criminal Investigation De- tartment.— Remanded at Bow Street Police Court till 7th inst., for fraud— HORACE CHARLES BROCKHURST, alias CHARLIE BOULTER and CAMERON, age 39, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair dark, clean shaved, eyes hazel, slightly lame, carries head forward. A commission agent; native of London.— WIL- LIAM JOHN BRETT, age 23, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion and hair light, clean shaved, eyes grey. A clerk. Both of smart appearance. These men, concerned with JAMES ALFRED PROWSE, alias PRICE ( now deceased), have during the past 2 years circularised shareholders in various public companies, and obtained money for shares which were not supplied. They have used the names of Price and Co., Commission Agents, Craven Street, Strand; Turner, Turner k Wild* Featherstone Buildings, High Holborn; Collett, Green & Co., Torrington Square; Green k Co., Hand Court, Holborn; J. Mackenzie & Co., Eaton Terrace; Vanner k Vanner, Little Turnstile, Holborn; Frere, Blackmore k Co., North Street, West- minster; and Messrs. Mercer & Mercer, Churton Street, Pimlico. Information to be forwarded to the Metropoli- tan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BERKSHIRE. 31.— Abingdon ( County).— Remanded till 7th inst., charged with being drunk and disorderly — WILLIAM ROBINSON, age 62, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) dark brown, eyes brown, scar on left jaw, ruptured; dress, old pilot jacket, dark vest, moleskin trousers, dark cap. A smith and boiler maker; native of Middlesbrough, Yorks. Supposed wanted for de- serting his wife and family. Photograph can be seen on application. Information to Supt. Foster, Abingdon. 32.— Wokingham ( County). — Committed for trial at next Berks Quarter Sessions, charged with larceny ( lodgings)— HENRY COPPING, alias FREDERICK CHAPMAN and CUPPING, age 38, height 5 ft. 10| in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes ( deep set) grey, scar right side jaw and neck, mole left cheek, both little fingers crooked; dress, grey jacket suit, long grey over- coat, cap. A groom; native of Burgh, Suffolk. Has been employed by horse dealers. Is believed to be wanted for failing to support his wife. ( See Case No. 45„ 24th ult.) Photograph can be seen on application. Carried a hand bag. Lately employed as relieving officer at Ryde. Ab- sconded 24th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Ryde.
