POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JANUARY 13, 1905. VOL. XXII., No. 2196. BBOUL 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. _ 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. ATIONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment; and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police the Photographs and descrip- tive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. GLASS, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion and hair ( turning grey) dark, eyes grey, gruff voice; dress, black overcoat, dark tweed vest and trousers, black hard felt hat. A native of Poland. Warrant issued. 3.— P Division.— For embezzling £ 1116?. 6d.— FRANCIS RAE SMITIISON, age 55, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers, and moustache dark brown ( turning grey), eyes hazel, walks erect, turns his feet out- wards, gruff voice, nose has been broken and in- clines to left side; dress, blue serge jacket suit, grey mixture cap, lace boots. ANGLESEY. 4.— Holyhead { County).— For leaving his wife and family chargeable to the Holyhead Union — THOMAS JONES, age 29, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes hazel; usually dressed as a sailor. Native of Groeslon, Anglesey. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Prothero, Holyhead. BEDFORDSHIRE. !).— Bedford { Borouoh).— For failing to report — Supervisee JOHN WALSH, alias MICHAEL MORAN, THOMAS KELLY, and THOMAS WELSH, Office No. 2005- 04, age 30, height 5 ft. 9f in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes brown, scar over right eye brow and end of right forefinger. A labourer; native of Newbridge, Ireland. Sentenced at Northampton County Quarter Sessions, 7th April, 1904, to 9 months hard labour and 3 years supervision for larceny. Liberated on remission, 15th Decem- ber last. 1383. Has been convicted at Newcastle- under- Lyme, Caterham, Windsor, Stafford, and Eccleshall. Information to Chief Constable Thody, Bedford. CHESHIRE. 6 — Crewe '^" unty).— For embezzling £ 11 — JOSEPH GRANT, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., rather stout build, inclined to be cor- pulent, complexion fresh, hair and rather heavy moustache brown, eyes blue, takes short quick steps, peculiar gait, is addicted to drink; dress, dark mixture suit, greyish mackintosh, black hard felt hat, light lace boots. A clerk; native of Crewe. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Crewe. 7.— Hazel Grove { County).— For steal- ing a lady's silver watch, white dial, black hands, engraved back; 1 lady's long gold chain, oval link pattern, a gilded Jubilee sixpence with gold rim attached; 1 light sable muff, lined brown sateen; 1 light sable stole necklet to match; 1 hair brush, silver back; 1 white skirt, Vandyke frill valance, lace insertion, lace frill at bottom; fine holland aprons; a King George 5s. piece brooch; 1 pearl necklace; and £ 1 2s. 6d.— A WOMAN, age 25, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion sallow, hair black, of Jewish appearance; dress, black f jacket, black skirt, black felt hat with brown feather. DENBIGHSHIRE. 8.— Denbigh { County).— For nieht poach- ing and assault on a gamekeeper— JOHN JONES, alias JACK BANK and JACK BARAHAIDD, age 25, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, oval face, hair brown, slight moustache light sandy, eyes blue, large scar on left of forehead, scar on left thumb and on front of knee, carries his head to one side; sometimes wears red tan leggings and light brown mackintosh. DERBYSHIRE. 9-— Chesterfield { County).— Yor steal- ing at Shirebrook, 7th ult., a silver Albert, curb pattern, Jubilee 4s. piece as pendant, and 2s. piece in centre of chain, with a foreign coin each side— A MAN, age 30 to 32, height 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion pale, thin features, hair and heavy mous- tache ( has been dinned) black, appearance of a German; dress, black jacket and vest, light trousers with narrow stripe, black overcoat, black hard felt hat, brown leather leggings and boots. Carried a small leather bag. He takes lodgings, commits larceny, and decamps. Information to Supt. A driller; native of Ardrossan. Sentenced at Belfast Recorder's Court, 18th September, 1902, to 12 months hard labour and 2 years supervision for larceny ( 3 cases). Liberated from Plymouth prison, 17th ult., from a subsequent sentence. Stated his in- tention of residing in Dublin. Information to the Chairman, General Prisons Board, Dublin Castle. DURHAM. 13.— Durham ( City).— For stealing, between 29th September and 23rd ult., a quantity of gold clippings and artificial teeth— WILLIAM BAM- BOROUGH, age 18, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( wiry) dark brown, eyes brown; dress, navy blue suit, dark grey J- length overcoat, black felt hat with green lining, " Herring, Hatter," therein, light button boots, carried a small canvas brief bag. A dentist's apprentice. May endeavour to enlist. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Claypath, Durham. ESSEX. 14.— Brentwood ( County).— For burglary at Hutton, 28th ult., and stealing a purso, forget- me- nots embossed outside; a black soft felt hat; 1 dark grey reefer jacket with white stripes, grey lining; 1 black vest with white spots, padded red lining, nearly new; and 16s. 6d.— HENRY HECTOR MACDONALD, alias JOSEPH STRUDWICIv, ago 20, height 5 ft. 3i in., complexion fresh, hair brown, slight mous- tache light, eyes grey, is a private of the 2nd Gloucester Regiment; wearing plain clothes. Has been a groom in racing stables at Epsom and New- market. Supposed a native of Cardiff. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Mardcn, Brentwood. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 15.— Bristol ( City).— For forging and utter- ing a banker's cheque for the payment of £ 12 10s. on the National Bank of Scotland, 6th ult.— A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., com- plexion and hair dark, supposed clean shaved, nose slightly crookod; wearing dark grey overcoat, red tie, bowler hat with wide brim. He calls upon the customer of a butcher and asks for the account book by stating that there is some error in the entries, on obtaining the book ho promises to return it the next day, later on the book is pre- sented to the butcher by a Boy, age 14 to 16; wearing dark clothes and cap, together with a cheque for a larger amount than is owing, and a note suggesting that the difference between the account and the cheque be given to the bearer. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. Aldershot { County). — For stealing, 2nd inst., a silver English lover open face watch, No. 533389, with a silver knotted Albert, silver locket and tassel, attached; 1 do. Geneva, No. 55521, " W. C." scratched with pin inside outer case, small piece of glass chipped out, a silver Albert, long links, silver compass, and old sixpence attached— A MAN, ago about 38, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, hair light, moustache sandy, eyes ( rather sunken) blue, freckles on forehead; dress, dark jacket and vest, grey striped tweed trousers, green mixture tie, » rcy cap, lace boots. He took lodgings, 31st ult., an< t stated that lie had obtained employment as a carpentor at the Cavalry Barracks, and that his tools wore coining from Newbury. Had with him a bicycle. He appears identical with GEORGE MATTHEWS, Case No. 30, 30th ult. 17. — Aldershot iCounty). — For stealing from a building in course of erection a pair of pins with bluo line — A MAN, ago 5Qf, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexiou fresh, hair brown, stubby moustache light brown, eyos hazel, bracelet left wrist, cut mark left side of head, scar bridge of nose, right forefinger and left elbow, 2nd right finger deformed. A tramping bricklayer. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. 18.— Alton ( County).— K< r deserting their children, leaving them chargeable to the Common Fund of the Alton Poor Law Guardians— ALBERT JOHN GARDINER, ago 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair and whiskers brown, eyes grey, slightly deaf; dross, black jacket and trousers, plaid vest, light tweed cap. A labourer; native of Portsmouth.— LUCY GARDINER, age 33, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fair, thin features, hair and eyes brown, front upper teeth missing; dress, black jacket, violet skirt, sailor hat trimmed black silk, large buckle in front. James, Alton. 19 — Bournemout h (< nnty).- For larceny ( see Caso No. 59, 30th ult.)— A MAN, age about 50, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair, moustache, and pointed beard ( turning grey) brown, stoops when walking, talks loudly, supposed slightly deaf, wears glasses; dress, dark jacket and trousers, knitted vest with blue therein, short drab dust coat, low rubber collar, black hard felt hat, wido welted boots, carried a Malacca cane, black handle, silver band. Information to Supt Hack, Bournemouth. 20.— Southampton ( Borough). - For un- lawful wounding— A MAN, age 26 to 28, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, hair and eyes dark, speaks English imperfectly; wearing dark clothes, whito muffler, black hard felt hat. A hawker and ice cream vendor; native of Italy. Information to the Chief Constable, Southamp- ton. KENT. 21.— Chatham ( County).— Yor s^ aliner a cheque form, afterwards obtaining £ 3 with same— L. RUSSELL, age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion and hair dark; dress, black jacket and dress, large black hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sargent, Chatham. 22.— Dover ( Borough).— For st'ali'g from their lodgings during the past two weeks, a lady's gold keeper ring; 1 gold locket, blue enamel, hair therein; 2 ladies' silver watches; 1 do., English lever, largo; 2 silver chains ( 1 long, 1 short); 2 dinner knives with bone handles; 1 plated dinner fork; 2 china figure ornaments; 1 black cloth skirt and coat; 1 pair of high lace boots, low heels; 1 small metal box, shape of a safe; 1 purse; and about £ 3 5s., including 15s. worth of new pennies and half pennies— BENJAMIN SMITH, alias IIICKSON, age 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., hair and moustache brown; wearing black coat and grey cap.- ALICE SMITH, alias IIICKSON, age 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair light, impediment in speech; dress, black skirt, grey jacket, velvet hat, trimmed large black feather. Had with her a Boy, age years; wear- ing green jacket, red tam- o'- shanter hat, some- times wears a white do.- ROSE HICKSON, alias SMITH, age about 40, rather short, complexion fresh, impediment in speech; dress, black dress, short jackct, black chiffon hat. They are identical with persons wanted at Southend, Gravesend, and Margate. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Knott, Dover. LANCASHIRE. 23. — Liverpool ( City). — For obtaining money by false pretences— ALBERT ROW- LANDS, alias BERTIE EVANS, ago 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair dark, clean shaved, eyes brown, blue scar on upper lip, bust of female wearing hat right forearm, front teeth decayed; dress, blue sergo suit, check cap. A groom or stoker; native of Shrewsbury. Ho called at the address of a barman during the latter's absence, represented he was the barman's em- ployer, and that ho had just met with an accident while driving, thereby obtainod £ 4, ostensibly for the repair of the trap. Convicted at Birken- head, 1st January, 1890, and at Knutsford, 2nd July, 1890, of larceny; at Salop Assizes, 3rd March, 1891, of false pretences; at Shrewsbury, 15th December, 1891, of making a false answer on attestation on enlistment. Absconded 3rd December, 1904. Warrant issued. 24. — Liverpool ( City). — For obtaining money by false pretences— A. BULLY or T. H. SMITH, age 47, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., good build, full red face, hair and moustache ( turning grey) black, stout; wearing dark clothes and soft felt hat. He replied to an advertisement in the Gardener's Chronicle for bedding geraniums, falsely represented that he was a contractor for the Livorpool parks and gardens, and could supply the cuttings. Advertiser forwarded £ 1 5s., but have not received the plants. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. LEICES TERSHIRE. 25.— Leicester ( Borough).— For failing to reportr— Licence- holder GEORGE MORGAN, alias EDWARD JONES, THOMAS WRIGHT, HENRY HENDERSON, and THOMAS GEORGE, Office No. 277- 97, age 64, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey, bald on top) brown, eyes grey, scar each eyebrow and on bridge of nose which is twisted to right. A* optician ; native of London. Sentenced at North- umberland Quarter Sessions, 2nd July, 1902, to 3 years penal servitude for receiving. Licenced 18th October, 1904. C 312. NOR THA MPTONSHIRE. 26.— Oundle ( County).— For obtaining 5 « . by false pretences at Easton, 31st ult.— A MAN, who gave the name of ARTHUR REEVES, age about 29, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, com- plexion dark, full face, rather long, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes dark, slight impediment in speech, of military ap- pearance; dress, navy bluo jacket suit, dark bluo woollen jersey repaired at wrists with brown thread, white silk neckerchief, grey plaid cap, lace boots, brown kid gloves. Ho called on a person whoso son was in India, from whom he represented ho had brought a box containing ostrich feathers, & c., and would forward same from Tilbury Docks on receipt of 5s. for payment of carriago. Warrant issued. 27. — Oundle ( County). — For indecent assault, 8th inst., at Tansor— A MAN, who gave the name of WILLIAM TAYLOR, ago 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, clean shaved; wearing dark clothes, cap, coloured neckerchief. Stated he was a groom. Had in his possession a black pocket book and cards, with names of places where ho stated he had been employed, thereon. Supposed tramping the country. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hooper, Oundle. NORTHUMBERLAND. 28— Nowcastle- on- Tyne ( City).— For failing to report— Licence- holder ALBERT WHITEHEAD, alias WILLIAM ALBERT WHITEHEAD, Office No. 2648- 99, age 28, height 5 ft. 3 J in., comploxion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar second fingor right hand, undor chin, and front right neck, right leg wastod, walks lame. A sign writer; native of Bradford. Sentenced at Leeds Assizes, 6th May, 1901, to 3 years penal servitude for stealing a banker's cheque and postage stamps. Liberated on second licence, 21st December last, which expires 6th February. b 200. To be dealt with where found. Information to Chief Supt. Wilson, Newcastle- on- Tyne. NO TTINGHA MS HI RE. 29.— Mansfield ( County).— For obtaining £ 10 by falso pretences— EDWIN 1300THBY, age about 36, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, stoops when walking, slight rash on faco and neck; dress, black coat and vest, bluo mixture trousers, light colour cap, sometimes wears a light fawn colour overcoat. Was accom- panied by a Woman, age 30, height 5 ft. 7 in.; and a Girl and a Boy, ages 11 and 5 years. He falsely states that ho represents " The British Homes Society," or " Tho Provident Association of London, Ltd.," negotiates loans and draws advance intorost. Supposed well- known at Stockport, Man- chester, St. Anncs, and in tho Tsle of Man. Warrant issued. information to Supt. Ilcnslcy, Mansfield. I V . FRIDAY, JANUARY 13, 1905. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 30.— K Division. — * peeial attention is called to Expiree THOMAS LEIGH, alias THOMAS BIRD, TIIOMAS JAMES, ALFRED JAMES, and LEE, Office No 2067- 97, Case No. 102, 16th uit., whoso arrest is sought on a warrant for horse stoaling ( property recovered), age 26, height 5 ft. 9J in., strongly built, slightly round shoulders, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) brown, moustache light brown, eyes grey, scar oach side forehead and back of head, thick lips, smart, horsey appearance. When last seen was wearing a brown jacket suit, tight fitting. trouserH, cloth cap, stand up collar, bow tie. A dealer; native of London. Sentenced at Ipswich Sessions, 28th July, 1900, to 3 years penal servitude for stealing travellers' samples; has also been convicted in London, at Chelmsford, and Brighton. May be found at cattle markets, fairs, etc., in company of horse thieves, and it is believed will violently resist arrest, possibly resorting to the use of fire- arms. J. B.," hair worn away from centre; 1 memorial ring, forget- me- nots thereon; 1 lady's long gold chain, small links, with gold balls at intervals; 2 gold pencil cases ( 1 flat, 1 telescopic); 1 lady's gold watch, chased back, white dial, maker, Dent; 1 very small silver coin— WILLIAM EVANS, alias LLEWELLYN LESLIE, age 33 or 34, height WARWICKSHIRE. 32.— Birmingham (.
