All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THI POLICB GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby : lentified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and add, of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. A. TI Olff S. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabeticaUy arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or_ recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cuses the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form; and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment; and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. A clerk or steward. Represents that he has taken a medical degree. Is identical with S. MATTHEWS, discharged from s. s. Darleyuale on 12th April last, and is likely to use the discharge to obtain another ship. Sentenced at Central Criminal Court, 25th June, 1901, to 6 months hard labour for embezzlement. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. 21.— Swansea ( Borough).— tor embezzle- ment— LLEWELLYN alias LEWIS JONES, age 33, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair and moustache dark brown, cast in left eye; dress, dark suit, black hard felt hat. Was employed by a firm of sewing machine and cycle manufacturers as a collector. May be found at common lodging houses or Church Army homes. Supposed previously convicted in London and elsewhere of similar offences. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Guildhall, Swansea. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 22.— Stroud ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, a pigskin purse; 1 dark grey overcoat; 1 cap ; and £ 15— HARRY ELSMORE, age 20, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, cross flags, & c., tattooed left fore- arm, pierced heart and " True Love" right forearm ; dress, khaki tunic and trousers, dark grey over- coat and cap, brown boots. HAMPSHIRE. 24.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For steal- ing, 31st ult., 2 pairs hair cutting clippers, makers, Brown and Sharpe, sizes " O" and " I" j 2 pairs scissors, one pair 7£ in. long, stamped " Elmo"; 2 razors, black handles, stamped " Kropp " and " Bengal" respectively— A MAN, who gave the name of — SOLES, age about 36, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, com- plexion fair, thin face, moustache light brown, eyes ( full) dark; dress, dark single- breasted coat and vest, dark trousers, cap, old brown lace boots. A tramping barber. Was accompanied by his wife and a boy, age 3 years. Stated he came from Hastings, and spoke of proceeding to Brighton and Aldershot. Usually stays at common lodging houses. 25 — Portsmouth ( Borough).— For steal- ing, 2nd September last, a cash box containing £ 24 10s., and 2 cheques for £ 2 10s. and £ 1 4s. respectively, made payable to Mrs. Knight— ARTHUR BROOKBANK, age 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, red face, moustache ginger, small eyes, thick lower lip; dress, blue suit, blue motor cap, lace boots, carried a mackintosh and a brown bag. Is supposed a pensioner of the Royal Engineers. Is well known at Manchester, Leeds, and Aylesbury. Was employed as a barman. Has been employed by Messrs. Vickers, Son & Maxim, Barrow- in- Furness. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 26.— Southampton ( Borough).— For steal- ing a phonograph — HERBERT CECIL CHESHER, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., well built, complexion sallow, hair dark brown, clean shaved; usually wears heavy pilot jacket and large check motor cap. Warrant issued. 30.— Dover ( Borough).— For stealing from his lo Igings, 24th ult., a brown leather purse, containing 17s. 6d., and for obtaining food and lodgings by false pretenceB— SIDNEY HOVEY, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair ( frizzy in front) and slight moustache dark ; dress, bluish grey jacket suit, motor cap. A canvasser ; supposed a native of Chatham. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Dover. 31.— Gravesend ( Borough).— For stealing on 7th or 8th inst., a gold watch, makers Paul and Johnson, Ludgate Hill, London; 1 gold Albert, long links, with Masonic emblem on end; 1 gold scarf pin, horseshoe pattern, set pearls; and £ 1 14s. 6d.— A MAN, who gave the name of HAW- LEY or HAWKING, age about 40, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion sallow, clean shaved, prominent nose, of theatrical appearance; dress, blue suit, cap, new lace boots, dark overcoat. Left behind a brown portmanteau containing a dark brown mixture travelling rug, 1 pair of lambs- wool pants, 1 cotton shirt, and 1 pair of Army boots. Warrant issued. HODGKISS and HENRY THOMAS and HOOPER, age about 44, height 5 ft. 5i in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey, bald on top) brown, eyes grey, cross flags and crown left forearm, small cross on side, small crucifix on pedestal left arm, 6ilver plate on top of head, blue dot left side of forehead, brown mark corner of right eye ; dress, grey plaid jacket and vest, brown cord trousers, grey cap, strong nailed boots. A farm labourer ; native of Tenbury. Tramps the country. Has been convicted at Brecon, Usk, and Shrewsbury. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Porter. Risca. NORFOLK. 37 — Norwich ( City). — For stealing £ 13 4s. 10d., 28th ult.— JOHN McFARLANE, age about 30, slight build, complexion fair, hair light brown, moustache light, eyes ( slight cast in one) blue, small scar right cheek, thick lower lip. A native of Edinburgh. Is a sergeant of the 2nd Dragoons, wearing uniform. Absconded 29th ult. Supposed to have gone to Liverpool.
