POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, AUGUST 5, 1904. VOL. XXL, No. 2150. 1. All communications for insertion in the Pouoi GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 9. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 5. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 6s. to 10a. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 8. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment; and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police the Photographs and descrip- tive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. BERKSHIRE. 5. — Reading ( Borough). — For stealing from his lodgings, between 15th and 17th ult., a gold Albert, twisted pattern, compass attached, no bar, swivel instead; 1 lady's gold Geneva watch, maker Viegers, Pall Mall, small gold chain attached ; 1 15 ct. gold pin, diamond in centre ( in case) ; 1 pair of gold earrings, with brooch to match, set diamond in centre; 1 18 ct. gold keeper, chased with ivy leaves : 1 18 ct. gold gipsy ring ; 1 lady's dress ring, set 5 pearls and 2 rubies ( 1 pearl missing) ; 1 Ivruger half- crown, shilling, and sixpence— By A MAN, who gave the name of HARRISON, age 27, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight moustache dark ; dress, dark striped jacket suit, straw hat with black band, lace boots ( much worn), carried a brown bag. CHESHIRE. 7.— Dukinfield ( County).— For failing to surrender to bail at Chester Assizes, 19th nit., charged with shooting with intent to do grievous bodily harm, 22ud May last, at Hattersley— HARRY GILBERT WATSON, age 32, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, cut mark right forearm. SURMAN ( supposed false), age about 28, height 5 ft. 5 in., round shoulders, complexion fair, thiu face, hair light brown, curl in front, eyes ( very small) supposed grey; dress, blue coat and vest, tweed trousers, greenish cap, green mixture tie, brown boots. Staple Hill ( County).— For escaping from Brentry Inebriates' Home, 20th ult.— FRANCIS LANGFIELD PARKS, age 32, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair and eyes dark brown, left leg partly paralysed and much shorter than right; dress, sleeve vest, buttons stamped " Brentry Homes," cord trousers, cloth cap. A native of Hull. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cooke, Staple Hill. HAMPSHIRE, lb — Gosport [ County).— For stealing, 27th ult., a lady's 18 ct. gold plated curb bracelet, set blue etones between links ; 1 plain gold chain brooch, about 8 or 9 links; 1 gold brooch, set 3 stones ( 2 white and 1 blue) in centre, pointed at ends— A MAN, age about 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., eyes blue, supposed tattooed on one wrist; dress, light jacket, dark vest, supposed light trousers, black muffler, light cap, brown boots. Appearance of having served in the Army. Information to Supt. Silver, Gosport. HERTFORDSHIRE. 17.— Hitohin ( County).— For stealing, 24th ult., at Datchworth, a pair of dark trousers with white stripes; 1 pair merino pants ; 1 pair brown socks; 1 white twill neckerchief with silk flowers; and 10s. — GEORGE FARAWAY, age about 28, height h ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, pock marked, hair and moustache light, stoops, splay feet; dress, dark jacket and vest, button boots, and the stolen trousers. KENT. 18.— Chatham ( County) — For stealing, 29th ult,, at Northfleet, a pony, cart and harness ( recovered)— WALTER SCOTT, age about 17, height 4 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion ruddy, hair brown, eyes grey; dress, grey suit.— THOMAS THOROGOOl), age 19 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes brown; wearing grey jacket and peak cap, low shoes. Sargent, Chatham. 19.— Dovor ( Borough).— For stealing ( bailee) 16th ult., a " Sparkbrook" bicycle, flat handle bars, rubber pedals, new departure free wheel and back pedal hub, round cranks — W. C. BARRETT, age 22, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, blotchy face, eyes ( squint in one) grey ; dress ; navy blue suit, light vest, blue cap, brown lace boots. Stated he was a native of Croydon. He disposed of a free wheel bicycle, No. 56984 " The Special Lombard " on down tube, transfer on head, " Guaranteed by F. Hebden, 133 Wood- house Lane and Green Road, Leeds," transfers on back tube, eagle's head, and a hand clasping two spears, " Guaranteed made throughout of Eadie fittings, Redditch, England," Palmer tyres, Lamplough's saddle, plunger brake, rubber pedals ( supposed stolen). A black- smith ; supposed a native of Birmingham. May seek employmentasabaker. Absconded 15th June. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. NORTHUMBERLAND. 2\— Berwick- upon- Tweed( Borough) — For larceny, and obtaining goods by false pre- tences. 18th ult.— ALEX ANDER HUNTLY, age 20 or 21, height about 5 ft. 8 in., hair brown, slight moustache dark, freckled face, scar near right eye, supposed figure of woman tattooed on one forearm ; dress, green suit, tweed cap, often wears a blue guernsey, of smart appearance. Has been on a fishing boat at Eyemouth, formerly in a racing stable at Dunbar, where be belongs. Has been convicted at Dunbar, Haddington, Hawick, and Penrith. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Berwick- upon- Tweed. NO TTINGHA MS HIRE. 22.— Newark ( Borough).— For embezzle- ment— SAMPSON BURK1TT TRASK, age 33, height about 6 ft., complexion fresh, hair and moustache ( pointed) dark brown, eyes grey, of smart appearance. A brewer's traveller ; native of Retford. Absconded 7th ult., supposed accompanied by a Woman. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable. Newark. OXFORDSHIRE. 23. — Oxford ( County). — For stealing ( bailee), a " Swift," No. 232130, pneumatic bicycle, 25 in. frame, Warwick tyres, plated rims, free wheel, upturned handle bars, front forks slightly bent, tool bag. and bell— A MAN, who gave the name of GEORGE MUNN, age 24, height 5 ft. 9 in., hair and moustache dark, lost right eye; dress, dark jacket and vest, brown cord trousers. Appearance of a labourer ; stated he was a native of Woburn Sands, Beds. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Oxford- shire, Oxford. Absconded 22nd ult., accompanied by his wife, age about 50, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair dark ; and two children ( a girl age about 10 years, and a boy, age about 8 years). Is believed to be on tramp to Ledbury. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bath. STAFFORDSHIRE. 26.— Burslem ( County).— ALBERT TAY- LOR, Case No. 38, 29th ult., is identical with Licence- holder HERBERT AUSTIN, Office No. 3193- 01, Case No. 28, 15th ult. 27. — Longton ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) £ 10, 22nd ult.— JAMES LACY, age 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes grey ; dress, dark Scotch tweed suit, black hard hat, bow tie. brown lace boots. A native of Birming- ham. He was entrusted with the money to pur- chase a pony. Attends sales and fairs. Warrant issued. I 28.— L O n g t O n ( Couyity).— For stealing, £ 76 4s.— CHARLES LIGHTFOOT, age 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair and moustache dark, eyes dark blue; dress, black suit, dark tie, black hard felt hat, light lace boots. He was secretary of a club. Supposed a native of Stoke- on- Trent. Is believed to be in Liverpool. Warrant issued. 29.— Longton ( County). — For stealing a coat and neckerchief, 17th ult.— CHARLES STEELW, alian WAGG, age 20, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, heart and dagger right wrist; dress, black coat, rough material, dark tweed vest and trousers, brown muffler, black cap, lace boots. A labourer ; native of Longton. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Oakden, Longton. 30 — Stafford ( County). — For failing to report — Licence- holder JOHN SHAW, alias JAMES MURPHY and PATRICK FYE, Office No. 3362- 01, age 38, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion swarthy, hair brown, eyes blue, scar centre of forehead, each eyebrow and bridge of nose, black mole under right eye, nail of lst right finger slightly deformed ; supposed wearing clothes as issued to convicts. A millhand ; native of Bel- fast. Sentenced at Leeds Assizes, 11th March, 1898, to 5 years penal servitude for arson and indecent assault. J. Britton, New Cycle Depot, Pem Dock," on head, Westwood back tyre, Edlin Sinclair front tyre— G. TORRINOTON, age about 25, height 5 ft. t> i in., complexion and hair dark, of Jewish appearance, speaks with foreign accent; dress, dark suit. Warrant issued. SOMERSETSHIRE. 25 — Bath ( City).— For stealing ( bailee) a pair of hand trucks, body painted lead colour, red wheels, sloping sides, all woodwork ( except wheels) new.— JAMES WILLIAMS, age about 55, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair and moustache grey, has a habit of showing his tongue at right side of mouth when speaking ; dress, dark clothes, dark silk necker- chief, white cap. A rag and bone gatherer. SUFFOLK ( East). 31. — Stowmarket ( bounty). — For obtaining money by false pretences, at Brome, 18th ult.— EDITH WRIGHT, alias EMILY WRIGHT and REBECCA LINTON, age 26, height 5 ft. 3 in., rather round shoulders, com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, pro minent teeth ; dre6S, navy blue skirt, light blue bodice, white sailor hat with black band. A native of Borough Green, near Newmarket. She represented that she was in service at Saham, and was seeking a situation as cook, obtained her expenses and decamped. Has been convicted at Boston, Cambridge, and Linton. Warrant isBued. Information to Supt. Page, Stowmarket. 32.— Woodbridge ( County).— For stealing £ 19, 21st ult.— JOHN WHITEHEAD, age 55 to 60, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion reddish, red nose, hair, moustache, and eyes grey, turns right foot inwards when walking; dress, dark blue suit, small white stripe in jacket, white straw Trilby hat, lace boots, carried an overcoat. May be found in company of tramps or at low public houses. A native of Woodbridge. Warrant iasoad. Information to Supt. Lingley, Woodbridge. 33.— Ipswich ( Borough).— For absconding from Ipswich Union— FRANK SHEPHERD, age 39, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark, heavy moustache brown, eyes blue ; dress, dark coat and vest, light trousers, white wrapper, black hard felt hat. WES TMORLAND. 38.— Appleby ( County). — For stealing between 2/ th and 2yth ult., at Kirby Stephen, a plain heavy gold ring, " Aug. 28th, 1890" en- giaved on inside; 1 gold stud, hollow at top; and £ i5— LOWTS LOUBERT, a Swiss, age 22, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, full face, iiair dark, clean shaved, eyes blue, of smart appearance, Can speak several languages; dress, dark grey tweed suit, straw hat, button boots. A waiter. He booked from Kirby Stephen to King's Cross, London, on 28th ult. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Johnstone, Appleby.
