All communicationt for insertion m the POLIOS GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THH EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZBTTI, NBW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. Particulart concerning persons vohote apprhention it tought will be inserted in one ittue of the POLIOB GAZBTTB, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if tufficient to enable the article in quettion to be thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person retponsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. Portraitl of persons whose apprehension it tought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of Bs. per photograph or sketch of a ttolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5. » to 10 » . A remittance of Bs. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving tketchet. Every announcement, if for the apprehention of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not lets rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be interted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. &. TXONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and at far at practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLIOI GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next usue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, & v Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. IS.- Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment; and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. The amount of stolen property at present " circu- lated " by the Metropolitan Police has become so inordinately large as to prejudice or destroy the practical value of the records, and it has been found necessary to limit it very considerably. It has been decided, therefore, to discontinue the " cir- culation " in Informationsand Pawnbrokers' Listsof all property stolen in the provinces, unless where there are grounds for believing that the property has found its way to the Metropolis. Chief Con- stables are requested accordingly, when forwarding lists of stolen property to Scotland Yard, to send with them a letter to that effect. And if bills or circulars are received in future, unaccompanied by such a letter, it will be assumed that the " circula- tion " of the particulars they contain is not desired. The same course will be followed with respect to property lost and persons missing. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1.— D Division.— For larceny ( lodgings)— MARGARET ETHEL MOTT, age 21, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair and eyes brown, double curvature of spine, right shoulder higher than left, left hip higher than right; dress, black dress, black sac three- quarter length jacket, black felt liat, steel buckle at back. A native of London. May be found in company of soldiers at garrison towns. Warrant issued. 2.— p Division.— For stealing from his lodgings, 6th and 12th insts., a blue serge jacket, " Holland & Barrett en tab, 2 blue serge vests; 1 black vicuna overcoat, silk facings, " Laurence, Leadenhall Street" inside ; and ; n • xydised metal watch, " Weekly Budget" on inside of case— JOSEPH MOSS, Office No. 813- 03, age 45, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache ( turning grey) dark brown, eyes brown; scar bridge of nose; dress, grey striped jacket suit ( vertical pockets), grey tweed cap. An agent; native of Edwinstowe, Notts. Sentenced at Manchester Assizes, 10th July, 1902, to 12 months hard labour for larceny ( 4 cases). Has also been convicted at Sheffield. 3.— R Division.— For obtaining £ 9 2s. 3d , by a worthless cheque on the London & County Bank, Eastbourne— JOHN JAMIESON, age 25, height 5 ft. 11 in. or tj ft., complexion pale, hair brown, good teeth, wearing fawn colour rainproof overcoat, black hard felt hat. Stated that he was a lieutenant of the Fife Artillery. Warrant issued. 4.— T Division.— For stealing ( bailee). l* t ult., a pony, cart and harness ( recovered)— JOHN HARDEN, age 30, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion very dark, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes hazel, addicted to drink ; dress, long drab over- coat, black vest, plaid trousers, dark cap, lace boots. A costermonger; native of Brentford, Middlesex. Appearance of a gipsy. Warrant issued. 5. — T Division.— For embezzlement — FREDERICK ROBERTS, alias BROOM, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion fresh, long thin face, hair ( bald on top) and moustache light, eyes blue, slouching gait; dress, dark clothes and cap. A milk carrier; native of Torquay. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BERKSHIRE. 6.— Wokingham ( County).— For obtain- ing £ 1 6s. by false pretences. 16' h December last, at Sandhurst — WILLIAM REEVES, alias WILLIAMS and KING, age about 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache dark brown, eyes hazel; dress, brown Norfolk jacket, cloth trousers and leggings, white necker- chief, black hard hat, heavy boots. For several years he has carried on a system of fraud upon shopkeepers by representing himself as a farmer, and obtaining orders for rabbits, poultry, potatoes, & c., receiving payment in advance. Usually gives his address as Park Farm, Cobham, Pirbright,- or Fleet. Has been convicted at Reading, Win- chester, and Greenwich. Stated he was a native of Exeter. Warrant issued. Information to Sup'. Goddard, Wokingham. 7.— Reading ( Borough).— For ringing the changes, 19th irst.— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stout build, square shoulders, complexion fresh, full face, moustache brown ( clipped short), large abscess scar right cheek; drees, dark suit, long dark Raglan overcoat, black hard felt hat, rather wide brim, gold chain. Is supposed to have left by train for London, 19th inst. Information to Capt. Henderson, Chief Con- stable, Reading. CARNARVONSHIRE. 8.— Carnarvon ( County).— For stealing, 4th inst., at Llanberis, 2 pairs stockings; 1 scarf, 1 pair leather gloves, and a h » zelwood walking stick — JOHN WILLIAMS, alias WILLIAM STAUN- TON, JOHN ELLIS, OWEN and JACK CYNWYD, age 55, height 5 ft. 7f in., complexion fresh, long narrow face, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, eyes hazel, cut left eyebrow, mole both arm- pits and left side, large mole right breast and shoulder, 2 moles on chest; dress, blue jacket, fustain vest and trousers, cap with ear flaps. A native of Cynwyd, Merionethshire. Convicted of housebreaking at Welshpool in 1879, and at Wrex- ham in 1886 and 1889, of larceny at Dolgelly in 1897, and at Carnarvon in 1898. Warrant issued. A fireman; native of Higher Bebington, Birkenhead. Sentenced at Cardiff Borough Quarter Sessions on the 4th January, 1901, to 3 and 3 years penal servitude ^( concurrent) for larceny. DENBIGHSHIRE. 11— Denbigh ( County). — For neglecting his children— THOMAS JAMES BUSHELL, age 34, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair and slight moustache dark, eyes blue, addicted to drink; wearing black clothes, scarf, and peak cap. A labourer; native of Ruthin. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Denbigh. DORSETSHIRE. 12— Shaftesbury ( County).— For stealing £ 5 10s. from his lodgings, 19th Inst- A MAN, name supposed HERBERT WHEATLEY, age 30 to 35, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair brown ( curl in front), eyes ( full) blue, turns his toes slightly outwards, appeared to suffer from tender feet, both arms tattooed, including woman, horse shce. and " True love" ; dress, dark brown jacket, giey v< st, dark brown cord trousers, dark cap, blue muffler with red stripe, biucher boots, silver watch (" Sans Rival" on face) and silver curb pattern chain. Stated he belonged to Frome and that he was discharged from the Royal Artillery a few months ago. Absconded 19th inst. Warrant issued. Iniormatkn to Supt. Dennett, Shaftesbury. DURHAM. 13 .— Consett ( County).— For shopbreaking at Blackhill, 27th ult., and stealing between £ 12 and £ 14 — ARTHUR LUPTO. N, age 36, height 5 ft. 74 in., rather round shouldeis, complexion fair, oval face, cheeks slightly sunken, hair ( turn- ing grey) light brown, thin moustache, eyts blue, head inclined for ward, laige nose and splay feet, one knee turns inwards, bust of a female tattooed right forearm, star between right thumb and forefinger, ecar bridge of nose ; dress, dark jacket, brown cord vest and trousers, light lace hoots, usually wears two pairs of stockings. A native of Knaresboro', Yorks. Generally seeks employment as a stone dresser or quarryman, sometimes works as a labourer on new buildings, etc. Information to Supt. Benzies, Consett. 14.— Sunderland ( Bon, ugh).— For failing to report— Licence- holder JOHN YOUNG, alias ISAAC MATHER, ISAAC MATHERS GEORGE WILSON, and JOHN JOHNSON, Office No. 2707- 02, age 56, height 5 ft. 7f in., com- plexion fresh, hair grey, eyes blue, cut scar inside right hand, on left cheek and right side forehead. A joiner; native of Sunderland. Sentenced at Durham Quarter Sessions, 2nd July, 1900, to 3 years penal servitude for larceny. Liberated on 2nd licence, 2nd ult., which expires 9th prox. GLAMORGA NSHIRE. lb.— Cardiff { Borough).— For obtaining £ 4 108. by two forged advance notes— GEORGE VULGARIS, a Greek, age 29, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion and slight moustache dark, hair dark brown, blind right eye, wears glasses, speaks very good English; dresa, long dark grey overcoat, dark blue jacket suit, black bowler hat. An engine fitter. Frequents Greek Cafes, and is fond of gambling with cards. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff. GL OUCES TERSHIRE. 16.— Gloucester ( County).— For burglary — WILLIAM BARKER, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes bine, dagger inside left forearm ; dress, blue serge jacket Vnd vest, moleskin trousers, blue muffler with yellow stripes, blue jersey ( no sleeves), cap, old brown lace boots. A boatman ; native of Gloucester May endeavour to enlist, or seek employment in the Merchant service. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Gloucester. 17.— Bristol ( City).— For stealing £ 69 9s. 10d., 9th ult,— FREDERICK HURLBATT, age 23, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., well built, complexion sallow, hair ( short) black, slight moustache dark, now supposed clean shaved, eyes ( small) brown ; dress, dark suit, dark grey speckled overcoat, black bowler hat. A clerk, was employed by the Remington Typewriting Company. Warrant issued. IS.— Bristol ( City).— For forging and utter- ing a bill of acceptance for the payment of £ 45— WILLIAM HENRY TOTTERDILL, age 34, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair very thick, moustache brown, eyes grey ; dress, dark suit, black bowler hat. Had with him a yellow tin box and brown Gladstone bag. A school teacher; may endeavour to go abroad. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol HAMPSHIRE. 19.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For steal- ing, 17th inst., a cash box and £ 28— JOSIAH EDWIN AUSTIN, age 32, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, hair, whiskers and moustache ( pointed) dark brown ; dress, navy blue suit, grey overcoat, dark tie with spots, dark cap. A clerk or salesman. Was a colour- sergeant in the 2nd Hampshire Regiment. Is fond of football. Was sentenced to two months imprisonment at Winchester Sessions, October, 1902, for a similar offence. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. 20. — Southampton ( Borough). — For stealing a suit of clothes ( trousers and vest re- covered)— FRP: DERICK CHARLES WIGNALL, alias CHARLES WIGNALL, age 19, height 5 ft. 41 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, " F. Wignall" tattooed back left forearm, left thumb has been smashed ; dress, dark jacket and trousers, black and white scarf, skull cap or pepper and salt colour motor cap, biucher boots. A cook ; native of Deptford. Has been convicted at Uxbridge, Newport ( I. of W.), and at Green- wich, Marlborough Street and Clerkenwell Police Courts. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, South- ampton. HER TFGRDSHIRE. 21 — St. Aihan's ( County).— For deserting his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to the Common Fund of the St. Albau's Union— GEORGE EDWARD CLARIDGE, age 30, height about 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, red face, hair and moustache light, eyes blue. A threshing machine engine driver; native of Mangrove, near Luton. Warrant issued. A reward of £ 1 1P. wilt be paid by the Board of Guardians, St. Alban's, to any person giving such information as will lead to the arrest of Claridge. Information to Supt. Hassell, St. Alban's. KENT. 22— Sandwich ( County).— Tot obtaining food, & c., by false pretences, between 20th and 25th ult., at St. Peter's, Thanet— A MAN, who gave the name of CAPT. GRANT ( supposed false), age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., square build, complexion fresh, hair black, moustache brown, good teeth, of smart appearance • wearing frock coat, black hard felt hat, black melton overcoat with velvet collar. Stated that he was employed by the Government inspecting Coast Guard Fortifications. He represents to hotel keepers that he has lost his luggage, sends bogus telegrams to persons of title, & c., stays a few days and decamps, a telegram or telephone message is afterwards received from him stating he is ill and unable to return. He left behind a silk hat " Grant, Govan " written inside. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Chaney, Sandwich. 23.— Gravesend ( Borough).— For obtain- ing money by falso pretences— JAMES SMITH, alias W. ROBINSON WILSON, age 30 to 36, hair dark brown; dress, brown jacket and trousers, blue serge cap. A labourer or jobbing gardener. He calls at houses, states he has been sent by the occupier ( who has just left the town by train) to leave a parcel of rose trees, which are afterwards found to be ash saplings, and obtains payment for same. ( See Case No. 34, 20th November, 1903.) Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Thornton, Gravesend. LANARKSHSRE. 24. — Glasgow ( City). — For embezzling £ 26 2s. 9d. between 23rd December, 1903, and 18th February, 1901— WILLIAM T. HEPBURN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 1 in., slight build, com- plexion sallow, hair and moustache black ; dress, dark jacket suit, red worsted vest, black hat. lace boots. Was employed as a traveller and collector. Warrant issued. 25.— Glasgow ( City). — For higamy, 20th November, 1903— RODGER WILSON, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., stout build, hair and moustache brown, Highlander tattooed on right forearm, 2 flags and name left forearm, soldier in full dress on one leg ; dress, navy blue suit. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. 26.— Garstang ( County).— For housebreak- ing at Haighton, 12th inst— A MAN, age 28, height 5 ft. 4^ in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey. A joiner or barber. He belongs to Lancashire Field Artillery Militia, and completed his training at Fulwood Barracks 14th inst. Had with him a parcel containing the following stolen property: — 1 brown dress; 1 black do.; 1 pair women's button bocts, size 6; 1 black blouse with grey lining; 1 lady's umbrella, white handle, round silver knob; 1 umbrella with plain brown handle; 1 silver brooch, small flowers thereon, about one inch in diameter. Information to Acting Supt. McLennan, Garstang. 27. — Liverpool ( City).— For failing to notify change of residence— ALAN SUTHER- LAND. alias HY. ALKEN, HENRY ALEXAN- DER CHAMBERLAIN, HENRY ALLEN, EARL OF AIRLIE, EARL OF ALGIN, CAP- TAIN HUGH D'ARCY COMMERELL, and HERBERT SIDNEY CRESSETT SMITH, Office No. 1517- 03, age 43, height 5 ft. 10£ in., com- plexion fresh, hair fair, eyes blue, nails of both thumbs broken, left little finger broken at second joint. A painter and decorator, but has styled himself at various times as an Army officer. Native of Hamilton, Glasgow. Sentenced at Castlebar Assizes, 14th July, 1898, to 7 and 7 years ( con- current) penal servitude for lareeny. Liberated from H. M. Prison, Maryborough, 14th October last, and stated his intention of proceeding to Liverpool. To be dealt with where found. 28. — Liverpool ( City). — For larceny ( lodgings)— A MAN, who gave the names of MURRAY, BOBINSON, BLACK, etc., age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., round shoulders, slight build, complexion pale, thin face, prominent cheek bones, hair dark auburn, slight moustache light, of consumptive appearance, speaks with Scotch accent; dress, black suit, dark overcoat, velvet collar, large pearl stud in shirt front, blaek bow tie, black hat. Represented that he wfus a Custom's officer and clerk to a shipping firm, nnd had been transferred from Glasgow to Liverpool. He took lodgings and left the following morning ostensibly to send a telegram about his luggage, and decamped. Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. LEICES TERSHIRE. 29. — Loughborough ( County). — For stealing from his lodgings, 4th inst., an 18 ct. chronograph keyless watcli, white dial, " No. 74798" { Hereon, gold hands, centre seconds, " C. B." on back of case, " In Memory of my Dear Mother who died July 24th, 1896, and was interred in Diseworth Churchyard ° engraved inside; 1 9 ct gold Albert, metal swivel at end— A MAN, age about 45, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark; dress, dark suit, hard hat, lace boots. Stilted he was travelling with artists' brushes. Supposed a native of London. 30. — Loughborough ( County). — For stealing £ 4, 30th January last— A MAN, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, full face, hair and moustache brown ; dress, brown suit, black hard felt hat. He obtained the above amount from a person by sending a telegram purporting to have been for- warded by the latter's son who is a lieutenant in the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Agar, Loughborough. FRIDAY, MARCH 25, 1904. 3 PORTRAITS OF PERSONS WANTED. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 31.— Criminal Investigation De- partment*— For obtaining 5s. by fraud— D. RUTHERFORD, who is identical with MAR- GARET ROBINSON, age 28, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, eyes grey. Native of Wavertree. Previously convicted at Liverpool. This woman describes herself as a nurse, calls at houses where apartments art; to let, represents that she requires rooms for her father, brother, or intended husband, whom she says is employed at a bank ( false), gives as references the names of doctors, solicitors, & c. She afterwards obtains money by stating that she has left her purse at the hospital, or has given away half- sovereign for a 6d., and has no money to pay her fare home. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. ;- 2.— E Division.— For stealing a bay geld- ing, 15^ hands, 7 years, scar from cut under left eye, short tail— Licence- holder THOMAS PEAR- MAN, alias THOMAS HENRY PEARMAN. THOMAS THOMPSON, and THOMAS MOSS, Office No. 3345- 98, age 27, height 5 ft. 10 in-, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, clean 6haved, bracelet, anchor, cross and h^ art left, clasped hands back and above right wrist, dot between left thumb and finger; wearinglong brown double- breasted overcoat, grey check cap. Has lately been employed as a ostler by a firm of horse- dealers in London; native of Birmingham. Sen- tenced at North London Sessions, 16th October, 1900, to 4 years penal servitude for larceny. Licenced, 17th October, 1903. Concerned with above— A BOY, age 14, height 5 ft., complexion and hair dark; dress, drab suit, grey check cap. Warrants issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S.
