All communications for insertion in the POLIO GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR oi' THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 8. Particulars concerning persons whose apprhcnsion is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 5. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose appreh ensiun is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the rngraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10 « . A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name, of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request frr the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible fur any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition nut later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment; and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. A tailor; native of Enfield, Middlesex. Sen- tenced at Central Criminal Court, 14th September, 1897, to 3 years penal servitude for false pretences; also convicted at Bucks Assizes, 30th June, 1902, of a similar offence. Warrant issued. 2.— E Division•— For failing to surrender on an appeal against 3 months imprisonment for keeping a brothel— ARTHUR BAKEWELL, age 33, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair ( thin on top) light, eyes grey, scar bridge of nose ; dress, dark grey jacket suit, grey overcoat black velvet collar, turn up cuffs, grey motor cap, brown boots. A draper's assistant; native of Guildford, Surrey. Warrant issued. 3. — L Division. — For stealing £ 162— ARTHUR WHITING, age 22, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion sallow, hair light, high cheek bones, pointed chin, large nose ; dress, dark suit, dark Raglan overcoat, hard felt hat. A native of London. Has been employed as a draper's clerk. Warrant issued. 4.— p Division.— For stealing £ 22 6s. 7d., monies of the Camberwell Borough Council— ALFRED GEOR'iE COPIER, age 34, height 5 ft. ( J in., square build, complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes blue, brown mark right hip, of smart appearance. Has served in the lOch Hussars. Warrant issued. 5. — W Division. — For rape — JOHN LAWSON, alias REEVE, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., round shoulders, complexion sallow, hair dark, eyes dull, hollow cheeks, large coarse bandB, has a habit of rubbing his hands when speaking ; dress, dark suit, fawn colour overcoat, black hard felt hat or fawn colour cap. He advertised in local newspapers for girls to take part in a music hall sketch, and personates a well known music hall artist. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BERCOMSMRE. 6.— Brecon ( County).— For embezzlement — I ER IVAL SHAW, age 30 to 35, height about 5 ft., complexion pale, hair light brown, slight moustache light, eyes ( rather full) blue or grey ; dress, dark suit and overcoat, black tie, black bowler hat with band. A brewer's traveller. He left Brecon for Worcester on 19th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Joseph, Brecon. CHESHIRE. 7.— Runcorn ( County). — For obtaining £ 2 14s. by false pretences ( Eucalyptus Cigarette fraud) — JOSEPH BUTT, alias BUTLER and LEA, age 45, height 5 ft. 6£ in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) black, eyes grey, scar both little fingers, anchor and 2 hearts over " J B" and 9 dots left forearm, ring on left middle finger, cut on side left wrist, scar over left eye; wearing blue overcoat with velvet collar, red bow tie, hard hat. A native of Waltham Cross. ( See Case No. 39, 4th inst.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ennion, Runcorn. DERBYSHIRE. 8.— Chesterfield ( County).— For forging a deed for £ 75 at Bolsover, July, 1903— ALBERT ERNEaT WATSON, age 39, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, oval face, hair light brown, slight monstache light ( inclined to sandy), eyes blue ; usually well dressed. An auctioneer and valuer ; native of Alfreton. Is known at Rother- ham and Doncaster. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Faulkner, County Police Office, Chesterfield. DORSETSHIRE. 9.— Poole ( County).— For larceny ( bailee) — A. G. LICHTERMAN- CHMARA, alias HEN- DEL, LITCHERMANN- CHAMARA, age28 to 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, hair nearly black, eyes hazel, mole right wrist, scar centre of forehead, and left cheek; dress, dark suit, cheese- cutter cap or soft felt hat, brown gaiters, may be wearing brown boots and snuff- coloured breeches. A native of Minsk, Russia. Deals in furs, cloth and damaged goods. Has a pedlar's certificate No. 194, issued at Derby 12th November, 1903 ; may be found in company of Foreigners. Warrant issued. DURHAM. 10. — Stockton- on- Tees ( County). — For obtaining 10s. by false pretences— JAMES JOHNSTONE, alias JOHN LLANWARNE SMITH, JAMES MCKENZIE, JOHN LAR- WOOD SMITH, JAMES LLANWARNE, JAMES HAMILTON, JOHN HILL SMITH, and FREDERICK JAMES RAMSEY, Office No. 2135- 98, and ILLUSTRATED CIRCULAR, No. 71, Figure 14 ( Case No. 28, 20th November, 1903, Tabular Form of Apprehensions Sought, 7th August, 1903, and Case No. 25, 27th November, 1903), age 45, height 5 ft. 7j in., stout build, complexion pale, large nose, sailor left forearm, scar right forearm, speaks with Scotch accent; wearing light fawn mackintosh and blue mid- shipman's cap. A clerk; native of London. This man is an expert swindler. He poses as a doctor, Army officer, or non- commissioned officer, takes lodgings, stating his luggage will follow, then asks, and invariably obtains, an advance by producing a bogus cheque, saying he was too late to get it cashed. In this case he represented he had come to look after the building of a new ship, obtained money to pay cartage of luggage and then decamped. Was in Lincoln on 4th inst. Convicted at Alexandria ( Egypt), Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Peter- borough, Aberdeen, North Shields, and Devon- port. Sentenced at Canterbury Quarter Sessions, 13th May, 1901, to 3 years penal servitude for false pretences. Licenced 21st May, 1903. b 208. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Appear- ance of iiiasnns or tramps; stated they were going to Newport, Mon. Iniormation to Supt. Marston, Ross. HER TFORDSHIRE. 1 ft— St. At ban's ( City).— For obtaining money by false pretences, 3 rd inst.— A MAN, who gave the name of ARTHUR HEARSON, age about 27, height about 5 ft 4 in., hair light, very talkative; dress, grey jacket, dark grey trousers, grey motor cap. Stated he was an auctioneer's cleik. He obtains money from local secretaries of < h^ Society of Oddfellows, by representing that he has sent to his lodge for his travelling card, and that he is in want of relief. In some cases he has assumed the name of Arthur Lloyd. Now supposed visiting the southern counties. Warrant issued. KENT. 17.— Sitting bourne ( County).— For burglary and stealing property described in case No. 50. 4th inst — RUDOLF DOTZAUER, age 23 to 25, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion florid, hair auburn, square face and build, rather bow legged, turns toes slightly inwards, awkward gait; drew, light dust coat, dark suit. Had in his pi ssession a small demi- hunter silver watch, small centre face; a native of Zurich, Germany.— A MAN, age 25, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion rather sallow, hair, slight moustache and eyes dark ; dress, light grey mixture overcoat, vertical pockets, dark trousers, black hard felt hat, tan colour gloves. A foreigner, spoke but little English. Warrant issued for the arrest of Dotzauer. Information to Supt. Rhodes, Sittingbourne. LANCASHIRE. 18— Chorley ( County).— For obtaining £ 5 by false pretences at Hutton — BREEDON PRATT, age about 26, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion ruddy, hair light, clean shaved ; dress, usually dark blue knicker suit, brown leggings, brown lace boots. Represents himself as a veterinary surgeon or manufacturer of cattle spices. Supposed well known at Preston and Blackpool. Warrant issued. Information to Acting Supt. Williams, Chorley. 19. — Rochdale ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) an '- Osmond Universal Road Ricer Bicycle" STEWART, age 25 to 27, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion light, long thin face, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes brown, of good address, appeared well educated; dress, dark tweed suit, lace boots. ( Supposed identical with MAN, Cases 52 and 57, 12th ; 36, 19th; and 51, 26th ult.) Warrant issued. lniormation to Supt. McQueen, Connty Police Office, Rochdale. 20.— Manchester ( City).— For failure to report — Supervisee HAKRY TEAGUE, alias HENRY PARKER and CHARI. ES WHARTON, Othce No. 1140 03, age 31, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, horse's head, skull and cross bones, heart, crown and cross flags front left forearm, parrot back left forearm, pierced heart front right forearm. Native of Birmingham. Sentenced at Birming- ham Sessions, 9th July, 11J02, to 15 months hard labour and 1 year supervision for larceny. Liberated on supervision lst August, 1903. Reg. No. 7808. LEICES TERSHIRE. 21.— Leicester ( County).— For stealing a dress ; 1 cloak ; 1 fan ; 3 blouses ; 1 piece of silk ; 2 gald rings : 1 travelling bag ; and £ 12— FLORENCE BKUNNETT LORD, age 17. height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown; dress, black costume, brown straw hat trimmed black. A labourer; native of Nottingham. Sentenced at Nottingham City Quarter S- ssions, 17th January, 1902, to 9 months hard labour and 2 years police supervision for larceny ( tools). A native of Manchester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Salt, Wednesbury. SUSSEX ( East). 25.— Lewes ( County).— For false pretences — A MAN. who gave the names of W. PR VAHL, MARTY, DEAN, and E. > IMM<> NDS, ag- 35 to 40, height 5 It. 5 or 6 in., rather stout build, complexion sallow, hair, and heavy moustache ( curled) dark, eyes sunken ; dress, dark suit, dark mackintosh with cape, check cap, brown gaiters. Supposed a native of Austria. He advertised in foreign papers and had letters addressed to private houses where he represented tint his business was carried on, arranged to send luggage abroad, obtained payment in advance, and absconded. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable htevens, Lewes. WO ROES TERSHIRE. 26.— King's Heath ( County).— For obtain- ing, 5th inst., by fraud, a dark chestnut mare ( age 9 years, 15 hands thick set, off hind fetlock white with scar above, broken knees, in good con- dition)— W. ROSS 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stout build, moustache black, of smert appearance; dress, dark serge suit, long dark overcoat, black hard hat. He hired s'ables at Birmingham, and no doubt belongs to a g ng of swindlers. He bargained for the purchase of the mare and presented a cheque for £ 21 oil the National & Provincial Bank, Walsall ; the cheque was afterwards found to be worthless. Warrant issued. CHESHIRE. — Crewe ( County).— Remanded till 15th inst. for stealing and receiving a railway uniform can. jacket and vest. 4th inst.— HARRY MOUNT- FORD, age 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey. A native of Hanley, Staffs. He has been travelling on tho L. and N. Western Railway wearing the above uniform, and posing as a brakesman. Is strongly suspected of having stolen passengers' luggage, and believed to be wanted elsewhere. Information to Supt. Pearson, Crewe. NOR THA MP TONS HIRE. 29. — Northampton ( Borough). — Com- mitted for trial at next Quirter Sessions for stealing jewellery and inonev from lodging.-}— Al BEllT EDWARDS, a'ais BROOKS, CLARK- SON, PREhBURY, and WALICKR, age 20 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 3 in., hair black, eyes dark brown, small mole right cheek, small brown mole on back, cut soar on knuckle of left thumb, scar right knee and inside right shin, burn scar right forearm ; dress, dark striped suit., ( lerk overcoat, black hard hat. A painter ; native of Birming- ham. Was discharged from Hereford Prison, 3 let October, 1903, and has since visited ih- i f > llowing towns where he is wanted for similar offences— Buxton, Wellingborough, Doncaster, Worcester, and Manchester. May be wanted elsewhere. Has been convicted at Leeds, Gloucester, Ban- bury, and Ross- on- Wye. Information to Chief Constable Mardlin, Northampton. STAFFORDSHIRE. 30 — Wolverhampton ( Borough). — Re- manded, charged with stealing £ 25 by trick— JOSEPH SUTTON ( supposed false), age 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown. States he is an agent; native of Birmingham. He inserted in a local newspaper an advertisement, "£ 25 wanted for 14 days, good security given, must be strictly private, lady or gentleman. Address XI, Expi% css and, Star, Wolverhampton." The security is usually old jewellery or pawn- tickets relating thereto, worth about half the amount; also gave an I. O. U. and a fictitious address. Supposed wanted elsewhere. Photograph can be seen on application. Information to Capt. Burnett, Chief Constable, Wolverhampton. PROPERTY STOLEN. METROPOLITAN POLIGE DISTRICT £ 20 REWARD. 31. — R Division. — On or about 17th December, 1903, from the grounds of Rotunda Museum, Woolwich, 6 ornamental ancient cannons ( I class fo M. A. 74, a brass fawcon, A. D. 1661, on the base ring is the inscription " Gerard Koster me fecit A" 1661. Gerarel Koster made me in the year 1661," the dolphins have been broken off, the vent is bouched with iron, 2 figures of mermaids on a star beneath a crown are on the gun, length of gun 3 ft. 3 2 in., calibre 2 75 in.; 1 v lass M. A. 88, bronze 1- pr., bearing the Ord- nance Arms on the reinforce, and on the base ring, " A. Schalch, Fecit 1727," calibre 1- 6 in., total length 45 in. ; 1 Class M. A. 116, a brass 3- pr. gun, date 1776, on the oase ring, " J. et P. Verbruggen, fecerunt A° 1776— J. and P. Ver- brnggen, makers in the year 1776," length of gun 3 ft., calibre 292 in., weight 1 cwt. 94 lbs.; 1 Class ^ M. A. 127, a brass swivel 1- pr. gun of the time of George III., whose cypher with others is on the gun, date about 1785, the base ring bears the inscription, " Fvdit P. Verbruggen, Woolvici," calibre 2 04, total length 3 ft. 6 in. ; 1 Class M. A. 236, a brass gun with date 1769, on the let rein- force a coronet with '' 1769" underneath, on the base ring the inscription " In bburg ggossen," length 3 ft. 5 in., calibre 2 in. ; 1 Class TJX M. A. 28S. a brass gun from Borneo, without date, length 4 ft. 11 in., calibre 1* 5 in., circumferen ® « of gun just below the swell of muzzle 10 in., at the reintorce at the vent 15 in., circumfer « ne « ot the swell of muzzle 20 in., ball in the bore, a support is fastened under the trunnions, upon winch the gun would be elevated or depressed, fitments for a vent cover). The above reward will be paid by the Secretary of State for War to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thief or thieves, and re- covery of the cannon, or in proportion to the cannon recovered. J Orr Ewing in foot race " ; 1 tankard, engraved with " Harrow Arms," also a prize won at Harrow ; 1 small silver cup. 3 legs, engraved " Castle Yacht Club, won by Yacht Andrum"; 2 silver ornamental boxes or trays, about 1 in. deep, 5 long and 2 or 3 in. wide, embossed with small flowers outside ; 1 dark blue cloth double- breasted overcoat, blue cloth covered buttons, lined with light brown Minx fur, usual pockets: I light colour double- breasted racing overcoat, light brown bone buttons, usual pockets; 2 navy blue cloth yachting over- coats ( double- breasted) with ho ds, Royal Yacht Squadron buttons on one coat, and Royal Northern YTacht Club buttons on the other, maker " Morgan" on both coats; 1 reversible motor coat ( double- breasted), da>- k bone buttons, black leather one side and dark grey cloth the other ; 1 long lightish coloured overcoat with large chequered pattern, with large flaps on breast pockets, made at Ulster Hou= e ; 1 short fawn colour covert coat; 1 thick navy blue pilot jacket ; 2 lady's umbrellas, 1 green and 1 black, with silver knobs for handles; 2 do. dark colour walking sticks, 1 with a monkey's head, the other with an owl's head carved on handles; a brown leather gun case, usual lock, 2 leather straps round case, " Sir W. Orr Ewing" painted in black letters on case, containing : —( a pair of 12 bore C. F. side bar lock hammerless ejector guns, with 28 in. steel barrels.
