GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1903. VOL. XX., No. 2078. E GXTL 1. All communications for insertion in the Pouci GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 8. Particulars concerning persons whose apprhension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLIOS GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. I. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. C. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10S. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. &. TIONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, " New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment; and the charges for the insertion of the same vM be given on application. A domestic servant: native of Liverpool. Warrant issued. 3.— B Division.— For stealing £ 70, 11th inst.— THOMAS JAMES KELLY, age 45, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) turning grey and heavy moustache black, eyes ( large and dull) dark, 1 front upper tooth deficient; dress, black morning coat and vest, black and grey striped trousers, silk hat. A clerk ; native of Fulham. 4.— C Division.— For stealing, 24th Sep- tember last, a gun, recovered— JOHN THORO- GOOD, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair and eyes dark, addicted to drink; dress, blue serge suit, dark tie, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 6.— S Division.— For stealing, 22nd inst,, a dark rosewood dressing case 18 by 10, by 6 in., containing 3 bracelets ( 2 silver gilt, 1 filigree); 1 gold filigree brooch, half- moon shape, star in centre ; 1 pair earrings to match ; 1 pair old- fashioned coral do., drop shape; 1 green leather case containing medal representing the Order of St. Lazarus, shape of a cross, made of white enamel with leaf of laurel in gold, green ribbons attached; 1 very large gold masonic, " Brother John Norton" engraved thereon— JOSEPH CZERMAK, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion pale, hair light, eyes blue, large scar inside one finger, very long feet, wearing brown overcoat, black hard felt hat. ROGERS alias F. JONES, age about 50, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair and slight moustache dark ( turning grey), eyes hazel, stoops slightly, carries his head forward ; dress blue serge jacket suit, black hard felt hat, walking stick with crutch handle. Supposed a native of London. He re- presented himself as a canvasser for a directory, and gave a receipt on a small green printed form with white margin. CITY OF LONDON. 10.— For forging and uttering 3 cheques for £ 369 5s., and stealing £ 105 2s. 4d.— THOMAS GRANT, age 17, height about 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, stoops slightly, complexion pale, hair dark; dress, light grey jacket suit and overcoat, black felt hat, button boots. A native of Love Lane, City. Is accompanied by his WIFE, age about 23, height 5 ft. 2 in., stout build; dress, blue serge costume, large flat hat. Supposed of German or French nationality. Had with them a large brown box, wicker basket, brown Gladstone bag, lady's dressing case, and two other packages. ( See Case No. 4, 9th ult.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. CHESHIRE. 13.— Crewe ( County). — For shopbreaking and stealing 2 rugs ( recovered)— FREDERICK OWEN, age about 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair light, moustache inclined to sandy, eyes grey, rather large mouth and head; dress, blue coat and vest, brown trousers, muffler, dark cap, old lace boots. A native of Crewe; attends cattle sales, frequents common lodging- houses. Warrant issued. 1 i— Crewe ( County).— For stealing, 14th inst., a pair light lace boots, size 7 or 8, toe- capped, rivetted, " vamps cut through, warranted to toe " stamped on sole, and an old melodeon— ROBERT SPADING, or SPADIS, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, long scar on one side of face; dress, dark jacket, cord trousers, dark cap, heavy boots. A native of Bolton; he tramps the country, and is occasionally employed with roundabouts, etc., at fairs. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Crewe. 15.— Hazel Grove ( County).— For stealing £ 2 Is. at Northenden, 22nd inst. — A MAN, age 36, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair ( thin on top, short) and moustache ( rather long) dark, eyes hazel ; dress, dark grey overcoat, dark jacket 6uit, red tie, dark grey motor cap. A native of Congorriff, Roscommon. Information to Supt. McHale, Hazel Grove, near Stockport. DENBIGHSHIRE. 16-— Llanrwst ( County) — For embezzle- ment— DAVID JONES, age 47, height 5 ft. 6 in., square shoulders, hair ( bald on top) and whiskers dark, turning grey, scar top of head; wearing dark clothes, hard felt hat. A solicitor. Is accompanied by his WIFE, age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 in., hair light brown. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jarvis, Llanrwst. DERBYSHIRE. — Bakewell ( County). — For obtaining food and wine by fraud, at Grindleford, between 15th May and lst July last- F. BROOKE, age about 50, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., stout build, com- plexion light, hair ( supposed turning grey), side whiskers and moustache ( turning grey) sandy, eyes ( small) blue, good teeth, of good address. He represented that he was fitting electric light at collieries. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Savory, Bakewell. 18 — Chesterfield ( Borough). — For ob- taining food and lodgings by false pretences, between 3rd and 11th inst.— HANNAH MOR- TON, alias RUBY STANWAY and MARY THOMAS, age about 23, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., stout build, complexion and hair dark, full face; dress, black tailor made skirt, black blouse, fawn three- quarter length coat with small cape, fawn colour felt hat trimmed quill and brown velvet band with white spots, shoes with patent leather toe- caps. Had with her a green tin trunk contain- ing servant's clothing. Stated she was a native of Hawarden. May seek employment as a domestic servant. Warrant issued. 1 Chesterfield ( Borough).— For steal- ing from his lodgings, 3rd inst., a gold double Albert, curb pattern, thin, gold- filled oblong match- box, chased, and a gold badge appendage attached; 1 dark grey three- quarter length overcoat, plain collar; 1 morocco leather pocket book and card case combined— GEORGE BLOOR, age 21, long thin face, clean shaved, eyes dark, one leg withered; dress, navy blue jacket ( red mark down left sleeve)' and vest, dark cord trousers, blue tie with gold stripes, heavy lace boots, shirt and socks stamped " 3rd Battalion Derbyshire Militia." A slater's labourer; native of Farnworth, Lanes.; is believed to have been recently discharged from Normanton Barracks, Derby. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Kilpatrick, Chesterfield. ESSEX. 20.— Thorpe- le- Soken ( County).— For obtaining £ 5 by false pretences ( advertisement fraud). 2nd inst., at Clacton- on- Sea— HENRY HARRISON ( supposed false), age about 60, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion florid, hair grey ( believed to have been dyed), short neck, upper teeth slightly overlaps bottom, of good address, carries his « head slightly forward; dress, dark jacket, trousers and overcoat, shoes with thick soles, gold link chain across vest, wears gold rimmed glasses when reading or writing. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Thorpe- le- Soken. GL OUCES TERSHIRE. 21.— Staple Hill ( County).— Escaped from a reformatory, 27th ult.— WILLIAM DOLLING, age 15, height 5 ft. 1J in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, large scar left calf; wear- ing reformatory uniform, viz., drab cord suit, blue cap with small red stripe. A native of Bath. Information to Supt. Cooke, Staple Hill. 22.— Bristol ( City).— For obtaining money, food, and lodgings, by false pretences, 13th inst. — GEORGE BARTON, age about 38, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stout build, complexion fresh, clean shaved; dress, dark suit and overcoat. He re- presented himself as a London detective. Formerly employed by a London firm as an enquiry agent. Warrant issued 23.— Bristol ( City).— For obtaining credit to the amount of £ 89 7s. 8d., by false pretences— JAMES BEAUFORT, age about 35, height 5 ft. 5 in., stiff build, complexion dark, hair ( bald on top) black, clean shaved, nervous manner when in conversation, of Jewish or foreign appearance, a linguist; dress, dark suit and overcoat with vel- vet collar, black bowler hat, patent leather boots. A wholesale and retail tobacconist. May assume the name of JAMES DELANEY. Warrant issued 24.— Bristol ( City).— For stealing, from his lodgings, 9th inst., a dark brown tweed suit, 1 9 ct. gold shield ring, monogram " J. P." thereon; 1 white linen collar and front, " Bate " thereon; and £ 7 8s. JACKSON, alias ROSEN, age about 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, several pimples on face, hair and moustache black, appeared to be rather deaf; wearing the stolen clothes, grey and blue tie, dark grey overcoat, black bowler hat, silver watch and chain, 2 gold rings ( 1 set large pink stone). May be wearing the South African war ribbon. Had with him 4 razors and a mouth organ. Stated he was an artificial flower maker. Absconded 9th inst. Warrant issued. HAMPSHIRE. 25.— Winchester ( City).— For obtaining 5s., by false pretences, 2nd inst.— Licence- holder JAMES JOHNSTONE, alias FREDERICK RAMSEY, Office No. 2435- 98 ( Case No. 28, 20th inst., and Tabular Form of Apprehensions Sought, 7th August last), age 45 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 7\ in., complexion fresh, hair grey, eyes blue, sailor left forearm, scar each side of back, left of stomach and right forearm. Licenced 15th May last. Warrant issued Information to Head Constable Felton, Win- chester. 26.— Southampton ( Borough).— For ob- taining a cheque for £ 1 4s., by false pretences—- F. MILNER, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, right hand missing, speaks with Lan- cashire accent; dress, dark suit, and reefer jacket. Warrant issued. 27.— Southampton ( Borough).— For steal- ing £ 5 16s.— GEORGE JAMES, age 19, height 5 ft. 10^ in., mark on bridge of nose; dress, dark grey coat and vest, cord trousers, blue muffler, old boots. A window cleaner. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, South- ampton. HEREFORDSHIRE. 28.— Ross ( County).— For obtaining food, lodgings, and money, by false pretences, 13th inst. — ANNIE WEAVER, alias ELIZABETH WILLIAMS, age 20, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion sallow, angular face, hair light brown, eyes blue. A domestic servant; native of Yazod, near Here- ford. She obtains situations through newspaper advertisements, and frequently states that she has been in service at Tredegar. Previously convicted of larceny at Hereford. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marston, Ross. HERTFORDSHIRE. 29. — Watford ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences, 20th July last, at Rick- mansworth— WILLIAM BELTON, age about 44, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, complexion and hair dark, beard and moustache dark auburn, close cropped, of good address; wearing blue Melton overcoat with velvet collar, black hard felt hat. He represented that he was about to publish a port- folio, obtained advertisements from tradesmen for insertion therein, received payment for same, and gave a numbered and printed receipt, signed " Wm. Belton." Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wood, Watford. KENT. £ 1 REWARD. 30.— Ashford ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Common Fund of the West Ashford Union— WALTER ROSSITER, age 29, height 5 ft. 9£ in., complexion dark, hair brown, eyes blue, wart left side of neck; dress, light suit, leggings, and cap, or motor cap. A native of Ashford. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the West Ashford Union for the arrest of Rossiter. Information to Supt. Bailey, Ashford. SI.— Canterbury ( County).— For non- pay- ment of £ 7 4s. maintenance arrears— FRANCIS JACOB VINCENT, age about 22, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair and small mous- tache light, eyes grey; dress, light grey suit and cap, light lace boots. May now be dressed as a bargeman. A native of Kingston, near Canter- bury. Warrant issued. £ 1 REWARD. 32.— Canterbury ( County).— For non- pay- ment of £ 40 16s. maintenance arrears— JACOB ASHBY, age about 25, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., com- plexion pale, hair ( curly) and eyes brown; dress, bluish grey suit. A hairdresser, late of Whitstable. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mrs. Philpott, Ludgate Hill, Whitstable, for the arrest of Ashby. Information to Supt. Jacobs, County Police Office, Canterbury. 33.— Dover ( Borough).— For stealing a black serge jacket; a cap; and £ 7 2s.— RICHARD FLERMAN, a Russian, age about 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair brown, slight moustache light, eyes blue; dress, blue serge square cut jacket, may have " Winter, Dover," on tab, black vest, dark trousers, with blue stripes, black bowlea: hat or motor cap, old canvas shoes. A printer. Absconded 16th inst. May be accom- panied by a German, age 19, height 5 ft., com- plexion and hair dark, very flat nose; dress, dark clothes, overcoat, and bowler hat. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Knott, Dover. 34.— Folkestone ( Borough).— For obtain- ing goods by false pretences— HORATIO MCCARTHY, age 40, height about 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion sallow, thin face, hair, whiskers, and moustache brown, leans forward when walking; usually wears dark suit, bow tie, blue cap with shiny peak, or may be wearing frock coat, silk hat. Represents himself as a contractor and motor car agent, etc. Was lately employed as a road foreman. May endeavour to leave the country, probably for America, where he resided for a number of years. He left London 21st inst., accompanied by his WIFE, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair brown; wearing black clothing. Warrant issued Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Folkestone. 35.— Gravesend ( Borough).— For obtain- ing 5s. by false pretences, 26th ult.— JAMES SMITH, alias W. ROBINSON WILSON, age 30 to 36, hair dark brown; dress, brown jacket and trousers, blue serge cap. A labourer or jobbing gardener. He calls at houses, states he has been sent by the master ( who has just left the town by train) to leave a parcel of rose trees ( which are afterwards found to be ash saplings), and obtains payment for same. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Gravesend. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1903. T H E POLICE GAZETTE 5 PORTRAITS OF PERSONS WANTED. ESSEX. ' 36.— Colchester ( County).— For failing to surrender to his bail at Essex Quarter Sessions, 21st ult., for larceny ( person) at Parkeston Quay— ABRAHAM BERK, a Russian, age 44, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complexion pale, pock- marked, hair dark brown, eyes grey, mole left cheek and right lower eyelid, scars right side of neck, right wrist, pock- marks on inside of left arm, pin mark back of head, right side, speaks broken English; dress, dark clothes, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ackers, County Police Office, Colchester. YORKSHIRE ( North Riding). 37.— Richmond ( County).— For stealing a silver lever watch, No. 8952, white dial, Roman numerals, chased back, small plain circle in centre, with leaf therein, gold pointers ( minute one nearly broken); 2 razors ( 1 black handle, other white), " Butlers' Keen" thereon— MARK DERFIELD, a Russian Jew, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, moustache in- clined to ginger, eyes grey, near sighted, wears glasses at night. A cabinet maker or joiner. He left for Newcastle- on- Tyne, 24th ult, and had with him an old oak stained tin trunk, con taining 2 dark tweed suits ( 1 new), maker " Newis Benson, York House, Richmond, Yorks," on hanger; 1 new overcoat, dark, speckled with white; 1 grey motor cap ; and a tool box, painted reddish yellow, iron handles, 4 feet, containing tools with " R. Yarvill & Sons, York," thereon. Was convicted of larceny at Wisbech in February last. Warrant issued. \ Information to Supt.
