All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprhension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZBTTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 2 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. Jordan, Grays. 13.— Romford ( County').— For stealing from his lodgings, 27th ult., a lady's silver Geneva watch, figured dial, chased back, spring broken; a nearly new metal watch, No. 2732, three- quarter plate; and Is.— TOM PONDER, age 45, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fair, rather long thin face, hair ( turning grey) and moustache light; dress, dark jacket and vest, dark trousers with light stripes, dark blue yachting cap, lace boots. Has been employed by the East London Window Clean- ing Company. Warrant issued. 14.— Romford ( County).— For obtaining a lady's 18 ct. gold ring, set pearls, star shape, by false pretences, 8th inst.— A WOMAN, who gave the name of FLOWER, age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair dark; dress, black skirt and bodice, white collar and cuffs, black straw hat. Appearance of a domestic servant. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Creasy, Romford. GL OUCES TERSHIRE. £ 2 REWARD. 15.— Chipping Sodbury ( County).— For deserting his 3 children, leaving them chargeable to the Common Fund of the Chipping Sodbury Union— GEORGE BOWYER, age about 50, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, quiet manner, walks erect. A stonemason; native of Chipping Sodbury. May be found in South Wales. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Chipping Sodbury Board of Guardians to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension of above. Information to Supt. Phelps, Chipping Sodbury. 16.— Bristol ( City).— For stealing, 27th ult., a silver watch, No. 435166, and £ 2 10s.— WILLIAM BURDEN, alias BARTHOLOMEW, age 27 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache dark brown. A native of Southampton; has served in the Navy. Usually stays at Church Army Homes or Salvation Army Shelters. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 17.— Alton ( County).— For stealing £ 3 2s. lid., oth inst., at Borden Camp— BENJAMIN LEARY, age 34, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair and heavy moustache dark brown, eyes blue; dress, dark tweed jacket, blue vest with white spots, light tweed trousers, dark cap, white canvas shoes. A native of Poplar. May seek employ- ment on public works as a clerk or timekeeper. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. James, Alton. 18 — Bournemouth ( County).— For leav- ing his family chargeable to the Common Fund of the Christchurch Union— DAVID DUCK, alias SMITH and KING, age 42, height 5 ft. 10i in., complexion fresh, hair, moustache ( heavy)," and eyes brown. A machinist; has been to sea. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Bournemouth. 19— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For steal- ing, 4th inst., a hand- truck and a quantity of fruit — WILLIAM BARRETT, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair, beard, and moustache black; dress, long black coat, grey tweed trousers, dark blue cap, lace boots. Hawks fruit, fish, etc. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. HEREFORDSHIRE. 20.— Ledbury ( County). — For stealing a frail; 1 white slop; 1 do. apron; 1 putty knife; and a pair of shears— A MAN, age 48, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, hair ( bald on front) and moustache light, eyes grey; dress, grey jacket, trousers and cap, white slop and apron, old boots. A tramping painter; native of Gravesend. Stated he was proceeding to Salisbury Plain, but is believed to have gone to South Wales. Information to Supt. Phillips, Ledbury. 21.— Ledbury ( County).— For housebreak- ing, and stealing a leather bajj, containing £ 25, at Tarrington— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion sallow, hair and whiskers under chin light, of military appearance; wearing dark clothes, black soft felt hat. Is accompanied by A WOMAN, age 30, height 5 ft. 2 in., stout build, oval face; dress, white blouse, brown skirt, white straw hat. Information to Supt. Phillips, Ledbury. HERTFORDSHIRE. 22.— Watford ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences— GEORGE PEACOCK, alias THOMAS JESSIE BIRD, Office No. 1067- 02, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, clean shaven, scar palm left hand and over left elbow; dress, dark clothes, black hard felt hat. A printer; native of Oxford. Convicted of larceny and fraud at Oxford, Warminster, and Aylesbury, and is now wanted for various offences. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wood, Watford. 1091- 99, age 27, height 4 ft. 10£ in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, pigeon chested, curva- ture of spine. A hawker; native of Westmore- land. Sentenced at Newcastle Assizes, 6th July, 1899, to 5 years penal servitude for arson. Licenced 8th April last. Z, 228. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. LINCOLNSHIRE. 28. — Stamford ( County). — For stealing, 31st ult., a pair of trousers and a vest ( recovered)— A MAN, who gave the name of JOHN GILL and SCOTT, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion and moustache dark, hair ( thin on top, turning grey) dark brown; dress, black or dark blue suit, navy blue tie, narrow white stripe, black hard hat, lace boots. He took lodgings and represented that he was engaged to deliver samples of soap, and that a van containing the samples was being sent to him from Grantham. Warrant issued. KENT. 23.— Chatham ( County). — For failure to report— Licence- holder JOSEPH DAVIS, alias JULES ANQUETAL, JULIUS ANQUETAL, HENRY ROSE, LOUIS DULSE, JOSEPH LEVI, JOSEPH SIMONS, and SIMEON DULAX, Office No. 2716- 00, age 63, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes blue, scar bridge of nose and under right eye, crossed flags, crown and scroll centre, " D " left, and wheel right side of chest; dress, dark tweed suit. A dealer; native of Hull. Sentenced at Maidstone Quarter Sessions, 11th April, 1901, to 3 years penal servitude, for receiving. Licenced 21st July last. Convicted at Hull, Winchester, Salisbury, Portsmouth, Oxford, and Northampton. Information to Supt. Sargent, Chatham. LANCASHIRE. 24.— Chorley ( County).— For stealing, 8th inst., a maroon skirt, and 12s.— A WOMAN, age 26, height 5 ft. 4£ in., complexion pale, oval face, hair dark brown, cut over right eyebrow; dress, light blue dress and skirt, black piping at bottom, heliotrope bodice, with white silk front, fawn colour three- quarter length jacket, hat with broad brim, trimmed pink flowers, grey fur necklet, wore gold- rimmed glasses. Has been previously convicted. Information to Acting Supt. Williams, Chorley. 2b.— Liverpool ( City).— For stealing £ 21 12s. 9d.— MAURICE J. WOOLGAR, age 27, looks older, height 5 ft. 10 in., slightly round shoulders, complexion dark, hair ( curly, parted in centre) and thick moustache ( curled at ends) black, eyes ( cast in one) dark, good teeth, well educated, speaks with London accent, of Jewish appearance; dress, slate colour jacket, double- breasted vest to match, light striped trousers, black overcoat, velvet collar, broad raised seam down centre of back, hard felt hat, carries an umbrella with thin stick and dark bone half hook handle. A clerk; native of Lon- don. Is fond of horseracing. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. 26.— Liverpool ( City).— For failure to re- port— Licence- holder JOSEPH SANDON, Office No. 2228- 00, age 47, height 5 ft. 3f in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar centre forehead, root of nose and right of head, dot between left thumb and forefinger, ring 4th left finger. A packing case maker; native of Liverpool. Sen- tenced at Liverpool Assizes, 14th November, 1896, to 5 years penal servitude, for burglary. Liberated on 2nd licence 8th ult. W 500. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. 27 — Manchester ( City).— For failure to report— Licence- holder DEWHANNAH JONES, alias ANN CARLISLE, MARY ANN CLARKE, MARY ANN MORGAN, HANNAH CAVE, CLARA CAMPBELL, DAVIS, and DA VIES, Office No. 2233- 00, age 49, height 4 ft. 11£ in., complexion sallow, hair and eyes grey, mole left temple, and 2 back right hand. A native of Scot- land. Sentenced at Lancaster Quarter Sessions, 12th April, 1897, to 5 years penal servitude for false pretences, Liberated on 2nd licence, 27th ult. T. X. 28. A clerk; native of King's Lynn. Has been employed on the Midland Railway, at a brewery at Coventry, also at a motor works. Absconded 5th inst. Warrant issued. SHROPSHIRE. 30.— Oswestry ( County).— For stealing, 5th inst., a half- bred bay mare, aged, 14 hands, white patches on shoulders— THOMAS LEWIS, age 42, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown; dress, moleskin jacket and trousers, cap. Had with him an old black jacket. A boatman; supposed a native of Sandbach, Cheshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lewis, Oswestry. 31. — Shrewsbury ( County). — For attempted carnal knowledge, 3rd inst.— FREDERICK KENDRICK, age 18, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair and slight moustache dark ; dress, long dark over- coat, dark cord trousers, dark muffler, motor cap, lace boots. A labourer; native of Oswestry. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Griffiths, Shrewsbury. A boatman; native of Stafford. Warrant issued. An engineer; native of Congleton. He repre- sented that he was employed as 2nd engineer at the Electric Power Station, Wolstanton. Con- victed at Burslem, Hanley, Knutsford, Stafford, and Liverpool. Was employed as a house- keeper. Absconded 10th inst. Is accompanied by HERBERT BUCKLEY, age 24, height 5 ft. 9J in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, scar back right leg; dress, blue serge jacket suit. Is a deserter from the 1st Battalion West Riding Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Burrow, York. CITY OF LONDON. 36. — For forgery and embezzlement — FREDERICK RICHARD BARKWAY, age 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair ( slightly bald in front) and moustache ( turning grey) dark brown, eyes dark; dress, black vicuna morning coat, fancy striped and spotted vest, grey trousers, black hard felt hat, brown boots. A traveller, of Mot- tingham, Kent. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. A watchmaker; native of York. May be found at common lodging- houses, or in a furnished room, working at his trade, or may open a small watch- maker's shop in some country district. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( continued)- WILTSHIRE. 4!.— Chippenham ( County).— For obtain- ing food, lodging, and money by false pretences, on 27th and 28th ult.— SIDNEY DEAN, age 26 to 30, height 5 ft. 3 to 4 in., complexion rather sallow, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes sup- posed dark, most of upper teeth missing, cut scar from below left ear to chin; dress, dark jacket and vest, brown trousers, red tie, muffler, dark cap, brown boots blacked over. A native of West Hartbury, Somerset. He hired stables, etc., and represented that he had 2 horses, and that his father and brother were following with others, and obtained money under the pretence of pur- chasing provender. Supposed proceeding to Lon- don. Warrant issued. 42.— Chippenham ( County).— For obtain- ing 7s. by false pretences, 5th inst.— A WOMAN, who gave the name of WILLIAMS, age about 20, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., inclined to be stout, complexion fair, hair dark, eyes black, of good address; dress, black jacket, black skirt or dress, black hat with light colour trimmings. She called on persons, stated she had been sent by a clergy- man, and represented that she was a domestic servant at Cardiff, that while proceeding to London she had been robbed of her money and railway ticket. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Daly, Chippenham. WORCES TERSHIRE. 43.— Oldbury ( County). — For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, and stealing a silver lever watch— JOHN HILL, supposed false, age 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, hair and slight moustache sandy, wound right leg and foot, sometimes walks lame; dress, grey suit, black tie, brown motor cap, light lace boots. Stated that he was an agent for advertisements in American papers; native of Ireland. Warrant issued. Information to Supt, Sherriff, Oldbury. 44.— Worcester ( Citi/).— For embezzling £ 14 10s., 31st ult.— HERBERT NASH, age 23, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, twitches eyes when speaking; dress, dark grey serge suit, brown boots, red and white striped muffler. A cowman, or labourer; native of Crowle. He left Tenbury for Liverpool on 1st inst. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Byrne, Worcester. YORKSHIRE ( North Riding). 45.— Middlesbrough ( Borough). — For embezzlement— FREDERICK TAYLOR, age 35, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, hair ( turning grey) dark, moustache light, tattoo marks on arms, speaks with Southern dialect; dress, grey suit, bow tie, bowler hat, long dark overcoat, blucher boots. Is fond of horse racing. A dairy- man ; has served in the Army. Warrant issued. Information ' to Chief Constable Riches, Scar- borough. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. CORNWALL. id.— Launceston ( County). — Committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions at Bodmin, 20th prox., for fraud— HENRY CHARLES THOMAS MARTIN FRASER, age 35, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, oval face, hair dark brown, eyes light grey, pointed chin, small mouth, low forehead, apparently well educated. States he is a civil engineer, and publisher of the Garden Dictionary. Supposed a native of St. Helen's, Lanes. Is be- lieved to have served in Liverpool, Swansea, and Hull prisons, and to have been an inmate of Chester and Nottingham Asylums. Information to Supt. Nicholls, Launceston. DORSETSHIRE. 47— Dorchester ( County). — Committed for trial at Quarter Sessions, for obtaining money by false pretences— GEORGE MOORE, alias WILLIAM CARROLL and JACK EATON, age 42, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, " W. C." left forearm, several faint dots back left hand, left thumb deformed; dress, brown suit, dark cap, brown canvas shoes. A native of Holderness. Previously convicted at Romsey, Aldershot, and Bournemouth. Supposed wanted elsewhere. Information to Supt. Burden, Dorchester. 5 TA FFORDSHIRE. IS— Brierley Hill ( County).— Remanded till 21st inst., charged with welshing— SAMUEL HODGETTS, age 46, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes ( sunken) blue, small mole both forearms and near left elbow, on left cheek, small hole near right ear; dress, fawn colour dust coat, brown tweed jacket, tweed vest, blue striped trousers, black hard hat, light lace boots. A native of Birmingham. States he was in custody at Liverpool and Ruthin about 20 years ago for stealing jewellery. 49 .— Brierley Hill ( County).— Remanded till 21st inst., for stealing a gold plain centre seconds stop watch, No. 54682, maker " Nathan, Birmingham," on works, single case, not capped, white face— RICHARD WILMAR, age 23, height 5 ft. 8f in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, bird on pedestal and woman left fore- arm, several cut scars left cheek and right side of forehead; dress, grey suit, blue and white tie, black hard hat, brown lace boots. A native of Birmingham. Information to Supt. Pilliner, Brierley Hill. 50.— Wednesbury ( County).— Remanded till 25th inst., on two charges of larceny ( lodgings) JAMES GIBBONS, age 32, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light, inclined to sandy, eyes ( cast in left) grey, ends of 2nd and 3rd right fingers missing. A painter's labourer; native of Bilston. States he has resided at Brondesbury, London, Harrow, and Wigan. Supposed previously convicted, and wanted for similar offences elsewhere. Information to Supt. Salt, Wednesbury. SUSSEX ( East). 51.— Eastbourne ( Borrmgh). — Sentenced 14th inst., to 2 months imprisonment, for steal- ing wearing apparel— WALTER JONES, age 21, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes dark grey— FREDERICK ROBERTS, age 18, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, eyes grey. Both are labourers, and natives of London. Information to Major Teale, Chief Constable, Eastbourne. PROPERTY STOLEN. CUMBERLAND. 52.— Cocker mouth ( County).— Between 9th and 10th inst., by shopbreaking, at Maryport, a lady's gold Geneva watch, much worn, " C.
