GAZETT PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JULY 11, 1902. VOL. XIX., No. 1934. EGUL 1. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, ami nil communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD. LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will he inserted in on/ issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likeicise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 15s. per portrait, anil of Is. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required! to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must he signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. LTIONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not lets rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, arid accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. THE EDITOR. In most cases in which Licence- holders and Supervisees residing in the Provinces fail to report themselves and whose arrest is con- sequently desired, the Editor is requested to insert the particulars in the GAZETTE. A native of St. Nicholas, Ireland. Is a deserter from the 2nd Life Guards. May be found with bands at seaside resorts. Information to Chief Constable Nicholls, Windsor. BUCKINGHA MS HIRE. 9— Fenny Stratford [ County).— For obtaining money by false pretences, 16th nit.— F. P. THOMPSON, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, full face, hair light brown, lower lip drops, curved cut scar in centre ; dress, grey suit, black soft felt hat; carried a black hand bag. A native of Grimsby. He obtained money by representing that he was can- vassing for a firm of printers at Grimsby for advertisements for insertion in a local and district time table. Lait, Fenny Stratford. 10.— High Wycombe ( Borough). — For indecent exposure— MOSES RAY, age about 21, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., thick set, square shoulders, complexion sallow, hair ( curly on forehead) and slight moustache dark, swaggering gait, takes quick steps, of military appearance; supposed wearing old dark coat and vest, light trousers, dark cap, military boots, usually wears a neckerchief. CA MB RIDGES HIRE. 11.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For unlawful pledging, 9th ult. and other dates— ELIZABETH ANN SAGE, age 30, height 5 ft. 4£ in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey; dress, black jacket and dress, white sailor hat with black band. May be accompanied by her Mother, age 57, height 5 ft. 1 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair auburn, eyes hazel; dress, brown bodice, black skirt, dark bonnet trimmed flowers. Dressmakers; natives of Kensington, London. Was convicted of larceny ( lodgings) at Saffron Walden in August, 1901, and sentenced to 5 months imprisonment. A labourer; native of Walsall, Staffs. Sentenced at York Assizes, 20th July, 1897, to 5 years penal servitude for arson ( stack). Liberated on 2nd licence 19th ult. Q. X. 327. 16.— Crewe { County).— For obtaining by false pretences, 7th inst., 2 pairs of ladies' kid boots ( 1 pair recovered) — ANNIE KAY ( supposed false), age 20, height 5 ft. 1 in., com- plexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes ( small) brown ; dress, black sac jacket, black sailor hat, supposed black blouse and skirt. A native of Cheadle, Staffs. She stated she had been sent for the boots by a person residing in the town. Supposed identical with Elsie Lovatt, Case No. 38. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. DERBYSHIRE. 17.— Chesterfield { County).— For stealing ( by trick) a Raleigh Car— CHARLES OGDEN, age about 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion sallow, round features, hair dark brown, slight moustache dark, of Jewish appear- ance ; dress, grey suit, shooting coat with large pockets at sides, hard hat, lace boots. Warrant issued. 18.— Chesterfield { County).— For obtain- ing £ 6 by false pretences, 28th April last, at Scarcliffe— ARTHUR SMITH, age about 33, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair black ( frizzy in front), eyes dark brown. A native of Clapham, Beds ; stated he was a con- tractor. Warrant issued. 19.— Chesterfield { County).— For steal- ing 10s. from his lodgings, at Calow, 23rd ult.— HENRY LEE, age about 40, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes sore, no eyelashes, burn marks on face and ears, lump ( size of a penny) right hand ; dress, blue cloth jacket and cap, cord trousers, small light lace boots, blue and red check muffler. A native of Pilsley, near Clay Cross. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Faulkner, County Police Office, Chesterfield. DEVONSHIRE. 20. — Honiton { County).— For obtaining 6s. 6d. by false pretences — STANLEY JOHN JAMES STEPHENS, age 33, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, moustache ( rather long) dark, eyes blue, birthmark centre of forehead ; dress, light grey square cut coat and vest, dark grey trousers, dark red cord tie. " Thomas & Co., Totnes," thereon, grey soft felt hat, lace boots. A native of Stonehouse. Has served in the Dorset Regiment. He obtains money by stating he was invalided from South Africa. Has been previously convicted of fraud. Left Torquay, 18th ult., and is supposed travell- ing the South- Western Counties. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. de Schmidt, Honiton. ESSEX. 21.— Braintree { County). — For stealing ( bailee), 1st inst., at Earls Colne, a pneumatic bicycle, 24 in. frame, black enamelled, gold lined, raised handle bars, cork handles, black tips, West- wood rims, Warwick tyres, 28 in. wheels, front rim thumb brake, B. S. A. fittings, rat- trap pedals, white celluloid pump, Challis bell, mudguards, japanned lamp, " W. Day & Sons, Earls Colne, Essex," on transfer on back mudguard— J. BUM- FORD, age 23, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair sandy, clean shaved, eyes grey ; wearing uniform jacket of the Royal Field Artillery and cycling breeches. A native of Bartley Green, Quintin, near Birmingham. The above machine has since been altered, viz. : drop handle bars, brake taken off, and the transfer scratched out. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 23.— Romford { County). — For stealing, 26th ult., a brown mackintosh with cape, no sleeves; 1 light brown do. with sleeves; 1 old silver watch, Swiss make, open face, brass chain attached ; 1 improved lathe drill head, new ; 1 new expanding bit, American make ; 2 brass Swedish blow lamps ( benzoline) ; 1 paraffin wickless cooking stove, " The Primus," much worn ; 1 cheque book on the London and Midland Bank, Ltd., Tottenham Court Road branch, con- taining 22 cheques, Nos. C 20279 to C 20300— RAPHAEL GUILLOM, a Spaniard, age about 25, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion and eyes dark, hair ( curly) and slight moustache black, large features, speaks very little English ; dress, dark coat, grey trousers, cap, or black soft felt hat. A cane worker. May be found in company of ice cream vendors at seaside resorts. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Chipping Sod bury { County).— For housebreaking and stealing a lady's long red morocco purse, imitation crocodile skin ; a serviette, marked " Canning, 1896 " ; and 30s.— A MAN, age 45 to 50, height about 5 ft. 2 in., stiff build, complexion swarthy, hair, moustache, whiskers, beard ( about 3 weeks growth) and eyes dark ; dress, blue serge suit, black cap with glaze peak, broken in centre ( all greasy), was carrying a frail basket. Appearance of a seaman or engine driver. Information to Supt. Phelps, Chipping Sodbury. HER TFORDSHIRE. 26. — Hitchin { County). — For bastardy arrears— CHARLES CHACKSFIELD, age 28, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes brown, nose has been broken and inclines to one side, part of right forefinger deficient, thick neck, large head, small feet. Hitchin. 27 — St. Albans { City).— For obtaining by false pretences, 1st inst., a bay Russian pony, 11 years, about 12 hands, 2 white marks under saddle, limps slightly on off hind leg; a set of black harness, brass mounted," E. B." on blinkers, no breeching; and a small dog cart, body painted black, wheels and shafts red with black lines, hub of right wheel slightly damaged, piece broken off near splashboard; a yellow rug with red and blue stripes BIRD, age 30 to 33, height 5 ft. 11 in., hair ( inclined to curl) and slight moustache dark ; dress, brown jacket suit, yachting cap. A jeweller. Absconded 14th ult. Warrant issued. 30.— Folkestone { Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, 6th inst., a large silver watch, No. 44568— Licence- holder FREDERICK MILES, alias HARRY HODGES and FREDERICK MYERS, Office No. 1140- 02, age 28, height 5 ft. 1J in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue ( blind right), birthmark right thigh ; dress, brown coat and cap, dark trousers and vest, brown shoes ( blacked over). A barber; native of Leeds. Sentenced at Ipswich, 6th January, 1900, to 3 years penal servitude for fraud and larceny. Licenced 19th April last. ( See GAZETTE, 6th ult., Tabular Form). Warrant issued. THOMPSON, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stiff build, complexion fair, full round face, hair light or sandy, clean shaved, lower lip drops, curved cut scar in centre; dress, grey suit, black hard hat. Supposed a native of Grimsby. He calls upon tradesmen, states he is a representative of a Printing Company who are publishing a local and district time table, and on payment of 5s. they can have an advertisement inserted therein, also that 300 copies of the table would be forwarded. B. B. 48331," with gold fronted studs and links attached; 1 blue blazer; 1 lady's silver Geneva watch— By A MAN, who gave the name of CECIL MORRIS BENNETT, age about 23, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, thick lips, large pimple on forehead, clean shaved, burn scar back left hand, well spoken; dress, dark flannel suit with light stripes, white straw hat with black band. OXFORDSHIRE. 33.— Henley- on- Thames { County).— For stealing, 23rdult., apneumatic bicycle, diamond frame, flat handle bars, rubber pedals, Clincher tyres, small round lamp attached, " Gordon " on lower bar— CHARLES TIGHT or LIGHT, alias CHARLES SMITH, age 21, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion and hair dark ; dress, dark serge coat and vest, dark cord trousers, dark cap. Has been travelling with roundabouts and switchbacks. Was traced through Tring, Berkhampstead, and Hemel Hempstead, OH 30th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sorrell, Henley. HARWOOD, age about 45, height about 5 ft. 8 in.,- complexion pale, high forehead, hair and moustache light, slight side whiskers, eyes blue, 4 upper front teeth missing, vessels and ligures tattooed on arms ; dress, supposed blue coat and vest, striped trousers, blue cap, usually wears a bracelet and 2 rings, " F. J. H." on stone on one. A native of Poole. Was secretary and manager of the above Club. He intimated, in a letter posted at Gravesend, 6th ult., his intention of committing suicide. Warrant issued. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 35.— Goole ( County).— For stealing £ 3 12s. 2d. — GEORGE HENRY CHARLESWORTH, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 or .8 in., complexion fresh, hair, moustache and slight side whiskers dark brown, eyes brown, scowling look, usually wears glasses, of good address. Was employed as a clerk at the North Eastern Railway goods offices up to about two months ago. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Burkitt, Court House, Goole. 5 TA FFORDSHIRE. 3G.— Burslem ( County).— For stealing £ 11 6s., 6th inst.— MARY JANE CHATTERLEY, age 22, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion sallow, hair black, front teeth rather prominent; dress, light blue mixture print dress, lace yoke, light straw hat with narrow black band, trimmed chiffon and pink roses, shoes with straps, wearing a string of pearls and gold chain, with large locket attached, around neck. A domestic ser- vant ; native of Burslem. Was accompanied by a lance- corporal of the Manchester Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt.
