All aiuumneements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all cummunications rel to them, should he addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD. LONDON, S. W. 2. Particular* concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will he inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one Utue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward it offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must he given, arid the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offtnces, and engravings of stolen property ivill be inserted at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to he inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, th< requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 10. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which, causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received rutt later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. SPECIAL NOTICE. PRISONERS UNDER REMAND. The aid of the Metropolitan Police is frequently sought by other Police Forces to make inquiries respecting the antecedents of prisoners under re- mand, and such inquiries often result in identi- fying accused persons as being old offenders. But, in many cases, the time allowed for such inquiries is so brief that effect cannot be given to the request for information or that it can be com- plied with only in a perfunctory manner, and at great inconvenience. The Editor would therefore suggest, in the interest of the Provincial Police Forces, that four clear days, at least, should be allowed in cases of the kind, to complete the inquiries asked for. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT l.— Convict Supervision Office. - Licence- holder JAMES QUINN, Office No. 2602- 01, see GAZETTE, 2nd November, 1901 ( Tabular Form), not now wanted. 2— Criminal Investigation De- partment.— For obtaining £ 380 by forged cheques — CHARLES FREEMAN, alias ABRAHAM FREEMAN, age 20, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 In., slightly bow- legged, complexion sallow, hair ( parted in centre) black, eyes hazel, of Jewish appearance. He represents himself as a turf commission agent.— HARRY ADDERSON, alias BROME, age 23, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, hair ( parted in centre) brown, eyes grey, of smart appearance. Stated he was an actor, late of the " Geisha" and " Floradora" Companies. Both are well dressed, usually alike, and with fancy plaid vests. Natives of London. May be found at seaside resorts in the company of prostitutes. " Warrant issued. 3.— B Division.— For stealing ( bailee) 5 £ 10 Bank of England notes, and £ 5 2s. 2d.— ERNEST ISAIAH COOPER, age 24, height 6 ft., complexion pale, hair and slight moustache light brown, eyes hazel, scar centre of forehead; dressed in uniform of the Coldstream Guards, wearing a good conduct badge and side arms. A native of Smethwick, Birmingham. Absconded 11th inst. Warrant issued. 4.— R Division.— For stealing 2 15 ct. gold bracelets ( 1 curb chain pattern, " Dearest" in pearls thereon ; 1 " Darling" in pearls thereon) ; 1 long gold twisted pattern chain, gold chain purse attached— THOMAS HENRY MANSLEY, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel; dress, black frock coat, black vest with white spots, dark plaid trousers and cap. A chemist's assistant; native of Chorley, Lanes. May be found at Nottingham, Northamp- ton, Manchester, or Chorley. Warrant issued. CITY OF LONDON. 5.— For stealing £ 100— EDWARD BELLIS ASIIWOOD, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion sallow, heavy moustache auburn ; dress, blue serge suit, black hard felt bat. BERKSHIRE. 6.— Maidenhead ( County).— For steal- ing, 18th inst., at Winkfield, a dark bay cart gelding, aged, 14 hands 2 in. high, small head, low neck, off hind fetlock white, wart size of a six- pence under jaw near throat, large scar on off hind fetlock, switch tail, in good condition— THREE MEN, 1st, age 30 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., hair dark, lame right leg, wearing dark clothes, black hard hat, appearance of a horse coper. 2nd, age 30 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build ; dress, plaid coat and vest, fustian trousers, black hard hat, appearance of a groom. 3rd, height 5 ft. 7 in., wearing dark suit. One of the above had with him an old- fashioned gig or high cart, wheels supposed yellow, drawn by an old dark horse, with old harness, part silver- plated, part brass mounted. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Dorrell, Maidenhead. CHESHIRE. 7.— Crewe ( County). — For stealing, 5th inst., a gold signet ring, " W. G. B." engraved on plate, and 2s. 6d.— A MAN, who gave the name of FREDERICK JAMES LEONARD, age about 26, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, high cheek bones, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes sup- posed brown, good teeth, old scar on upper lip, heart tattooed on one wrist, small scar on knee and left side of body ; dress, dark brown jacket and vest, light cloth trousers, long fawn overcoat, red, green and amber colour tie, brown button boots, navy blue cap, wore a leather belt with 3 pockets. Appearance of a groom. He took lodgings, 4th inst., stated he belonged to the 5th Lancers, and had recently returned from South Africa, also that he had been in Netley hospital, and intended purchasing a tobacconist business. Absconded 5th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson. Crewe. 8.— Liscard ( County).— For stealing, 2nd inst., at New Brighton, a gold wedding ring, small ; 1 do., large ; 1 lady's dress ring, set rubies and pearls; 1 do., buckle, set diamond and 2 rubies; 1 do., set 5 crystals ( 2 missing); 1 do., lover's knot, set rubies and pearls ( 2 pearls missing); 1 do. silver Albert, tassel at end, a silver miniature boot with Scotch pearl each side, 1 do. teapot, 1 silver pencil case, ruby at top, 1 imitation gold locket, containing Lair, and an old 5s. piece, attached— WILLIAM WOOLLEN, alias WILLIAMS, GORDON KEMP, NIGEL VICTOR and THOMAS LACEY, age 27, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes hazel, scar on forehead, of weak intellect, has been in Wakefield Asylum. Information cancelled. 11 .— Chester { City).— For stealing £ 190 ( confidence trick), 30th ult. — AUGUSTO MARETTI, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 6 in., stiff build, complexion sallow, hair dark brown, moustache dark, eyes brown ; dress, dark coat and vest, grey tweed trousers, black and pink tie, black hard felt hat. A native of Como, Italy; supposed a restaurant keeper.— ANTONIO BAR- TOLDI, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., mous- tache dark, eyes brown ; wearing light dust coat, black coat and vest, black tie, black hard felt hat lace boots, wore a double snake ring on left little finger, carried a new light brown Gladstone bag. A native of Bergamo, Italy. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Chief Constable Laybourne, Chester. DORSETSHIRE. 12.— Bland ford { County).— For stealing a lady's long gold watch chain, very small links, square pattern; and £ 5— EDWARD ANTHONEY, alias SAYILLE, age 27, height 6 ft., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes grey, front upper teeth artificial, " Semper Paratus" tattooed on right hand, " Chi la Morte " on left, " Ted " on arm, of smart appearance; dress, light mackintosh with velvet collar, dark striped trousers, light bow tie, dark tweed cap, light brown boots. A native of Islington. Absconded 28th ult. May endeavour to join the South African Constabulary. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Elford, Blandford. DURHAM. 13.— Durham { City).— For abandoning her child, age 3 months, 3rd April last— MARGARET BROWN, or MARGARET ANN BARBERRY HUTCHINSON BROWN, age 23, height 4 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion dark, hair brown, eyes grey. A prostitute. Is well known to the Police at Houghton- le- Spring and Sunderland, having been convicted there of larceny and soliciting. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Claypath, Durham. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 18. — Chipping Sodhury { County).— For obtaining 2 suits by false pretences— A MAN, who gave the name of — JAMES, age about 24, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., hair dark, eyes hazel, of good address, appearance of a German ; dress, blue serge suit, check tweed cap, red tie. He obtained the clothing by stating he resided at a farm in the neighbourhood. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Phelps, Chipping Sodbury. 19— Staple Hill { County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 6th inst., a silver Geneva watch, and 8s.— JOHN SMITH, alias VIRGO, SLENDERMAN, DREW, and SLEN, age 36, height 6 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair, mous- tache and pointed beard dark brown, eyes dark, anchor and woman tattooed right forearm, rabbit, woman, and sailor on left forearm, chest tattooed ; dress, light moleskin jacket, square cut, white cord trousers and vest, dark peak cap. A navvy or labourer; native of Compton, near Bristol. Has served in the Welsh Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cooke, Staple Hill. HAMPSHIRE. 20.— Basingstoke { County).— For desert- ing his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to the Common Fund of the Basingstoke Union — EMANUEL POTHECARY, age about 42, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, eyes blue, both fore- arms tattooed ; dress, short black jacket, cord vest with sleeves, dark cord trousers, striped patent leather collar, black felt hat or cap, heavy lace boots. A labourer; may seek employment on Farms or Public Works. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hale, Basingstoke. HEREFORDSHIRE. 21— Leominster { County).— For larceny, 19th ult., at Aymestrey— EDWARD WALL, age57, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion ruddy, hair ( turning grey), whiskers and moustache dark brown ; dress, dark pilot jacket, cord or moleskin vest ( double- breasted, 1 button larger than others), old moleskin trousers, peak cap, strong lace boots. A tramping farm labourer ; native of Cleobury Mortimer, Salop. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Price, Leominster, or Sergeant Rooke, Wigmore. plunger brake, small bell and tool bag, no mud- guards FULLER, age 18, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., thin face, boil scar on neck ; dress, dark grey suit and cap. May endeavour to enlist. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Knott, Dover. 26.— Ramsgate { Borough).— For stealing a blue cloth yachting suit, black bone buttons; and a blue knitted jersey, " Powerful, R. T. Y. C." in red wool on front— JOHN COWIE, age 22, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair light, left thumb missing, " J. C.," girl with skipping rope, and other marks tattooed on both arms; supposed wearing the stolen clothes, peak cap, and brown boots. A seaman ; was employed on the S. Y. Powerful. May endeavour to obtain employment on a coasting vessel. Absconded 14th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Joaes, Rams- gate. LANCASHIRE. 27.— Chorley { County). — For obtaining £ 5 by false pretences, 19th ult., at Parbold— H. HALL, alias WALKER and T. R. DA VIES, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 6 in., stiff build, hair and moustache sandy, burn mark left temple, walks quickly ; dress, black coat and vest, hard hat, or a grey tweed cap. A native of Wigan. Carried a small brown leather handbag. He called on a lady, represented himself as an agent for a Sewing Machine Company, asked to see her receipt book, and on finding that £ 5 10s. was owing, stated that on payment of £ 5 he would settle the account, gave a receipt and absconded. Warrant issued. 28.— Chorley { County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 21st inst., £ 14 10s., and a rolled gold Albert, with white metal matchbox as pendant— JAMES WALLIS, alias WILLIAMS, THOMP- SON, and ROBINSON, Office No. 1525- 01, age 26, height 5 ft. 3f in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, scar over each eyebrow, right temple and left knee ( burn), prominent nose; dress, grey cloth jacket suit and cap. A tailor; native of Liverpool. Expert larceny ( lodger) thief ( see ILLUSTRATED CIRCULAR, Series 63 and 64, Fig. 16 and 13), and is also wanted for similar offences at Leicester, Oldham, Stafford, Bolton, Macclesfield, etc. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. W.— Kirkham { County).— For stealing a lady's gold watch, 27th ult.— R. HACKING, age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey at sides), and moustache sandy; sometimes wears a dark brown double- breasted overcoat, black soft felt hat. A joiner ; supposed a native of Padiham, near Burnley. He travels the country representing himself as a watch and clock repairer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ormerod, Kirkham. 30 — Liverpool { City).— For forging and uttering a withdrawal order on a Post Office Savings Bank book— ALFRED TURNER ( sup- posed false), age 27, height about 5 ft. 7 in., clean shaved, eyes blue, right elbow injured, shamrock, heart, and other marks tattooed on left forearm ; dress, black jacket and vest, blue serge trousers, light tweed cap, white canvas shoes. • Warrant issued. 31.— Liverpool { City).— For failing to report - Licence- holder EDWARD JENNINGS, alias JAMES WRIGHT, EDWARD BURKE, EDWARD McDERMID, JOHN FERGUSON, EDWARD TOURE and JOHN SMITH, Office No. 808- 02, age 3S, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, scar left of head, back left hand and left of upper lip, mole left breast. A tailor ; native of Manchester. Sentenced at Man- chester, 13th December, 1899, to 3 years penal servitude for larceny. Licenced 29th March last. W. Z. 12. 32.— Liverpool { City). — For stealing and fraudulently converting a bill of lading of the value of £ 166 8s. 7d. to his own use on 18th July, 1899 — FREDERICK WALTER TYLEE, age about 40, height about 6 ft., complexion sallow, small thin face, hair and moustache black, speaks quickly; dress, dark jacket suit, black hard felt hat, light gaiters, sometimes wears grey overcoat, wearing gold pince- nez with thin gold chain. A hardwood merchant; absconded 23rd April, 1902. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. ESSEX. 14.— Braintree { County).— For uttering a forged bill of exchange for the payment of £ 185 4s. 7d. with intent to defraud— A MAN, age 30, height about 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion pale, hair, heavy moustache, and eyes dark, of Jewish appearance ; dress, dark jacket suit and soft felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Terry, Braintree. 15.— Brentwood { County).— For stealing ( bailee), 4th inst., at Shenfield, a " Rudge- Whitworth" bicycle, 24- J in. frame, Rudge- Whitworth pattern handles, 17 in. wide, front tyre brake, 28 by 1J jointless back rim, Westwood front rim, about 63 gear, 5- 16 in. block chain, stays of back mudguard broken, 1901 Dunlop tyres, both rubbed at sides, Brampton's pacer saddle, hole bored in seat column, seat pin about 1 in. below seat lug WEST, age about 25, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion tanned, hair brown, twitches both eyes, 2 scars on left side of neck ; dress, grey check suit, cap, lace boots. Stated he was an officer's servant at Regent's Park Barracks. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Allen, Brentwood. 16.— Colchester { County).— For embezzl- ing 20s.— SIDNEY CATTERMOLE, age 27, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes grey, cat tattooed on left forearm, 3rd right toe deformed ; dress, blue coat and vest, light check trousers, black cap, lace boots, silver buckle ring on left little finger. A journeyman baker ; native of Great Bromley. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Burrell, Mistley. 17.— Epping { County).— For obtaining £ 10 by a worthless cheque— HAROLD XENOPHON, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complexion dark, hair, beard and whiskers ( cut short) dark brown, eyes grey, walks lame, speaks with American accent; dress, grey flannel Norfolk jacket and trousers, grey soft felt hat, lace boots. He represented that he was a correspondent to the Daily Mail newspaper, and stated he was using an assumed name. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Womack, Epping. ISLE OF WIGHT. 22.— Newport { County).— For stealing, 10th inst., 12s., a rent book, and some under- linen— ALICE ELKINS, age 19, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes brown ; dress ( supposed), black or violet colour skirt, blue bodice, black straw sailor hat with black band, blue- black mackintosh. May be found at coffee taverns or common lodging houses. Is accompanied by a man, age about 21, tall, slight build ; dress ( supposed), dark blue and violet colour suit. Travels with cutlery. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ayres, Quay Street, Newport. KENT. £ 1 REWARD. 23.— Ashford { County).— For deserting his children, leaving them chargeable to the Common Fund of the West Ashford Union— GEORGE GOODYER, age 53, height about 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion pale, hair ( bald on top) and moustache brown, eyes grey ; dress, black jacket and vest, grey trousers, black hard felt hat. A baker. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the West Ashford Union, to any person giving such information as will lead to the arrest of Goodyer. Information to Supt. Bailey, Ashford. 24.— Chatham { County).— For deserting his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to the Common Fund of the Medway Union, 18th April last— WILLIAM SLADE, alias POTTER and VOKES, age 28, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion fair, moustache light, eyes ( small) hazel, mole under right eye and side of mouth, cut scar bridge of nose, long Y- shape cut on head, heart and policeman tattooed on one arm, prominent nose. A labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sargent, Chatham. 25. — Dover { Borough). — For stealing a bicycle, 24 in. frame, black enamelled, tyres rather worn, rubber pedals, straight handle bar. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 25, 1902. M.— Stalybridge ( Borough).— For fraud — CHARLES PLANT, age 38 ( looks younger), 35.— Hyde ( Borough). — For stealing, 2nd height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion sallow, inst., a lady's " Rothwell" bicycle ; also for hair ( bushy) and eyes brown, moustache light, obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— k 3) * ' JOHN MOSS, alias HILL and REYNOLDS, A clerk; native of Ashton- under- Lyne. Absconded 7th inst. May endeavour to leave the country. Supposed accompanied by a woman, age 23, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Acting Chief Constable, Stalybridge.
