All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will he inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars us to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is off ered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must, be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will hi• inserted ut a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photo- graph or slietch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for tin- apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less r. unk than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. \_ TIOBTS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not len rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Amwuncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. E. R. HENBY, Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. PRISONERS UNDER REMAND. The aid of the Metropolitan Police is frequently sought by other Police Forces to make inquiries respecting the antecedents of prisoners under re- mand, and such inquiries often result in identi- fying accused persons as being old offenders. But, in many cases, the time allowed for such inquiries is so brief that effect cannot be given to the request for information or that it can be com- plied with only in a perfunctory manner, and at great inconvenience. The Editor would therefore suggest, in the interest of the Provincial Police Forces, that four clear days, at least, should be allowed in cases of the kind, to complete the inquiries asked for. BERKSHIRE. 7.— Reading { Borough). — For obtaining goods by false pretences GRAHAM, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, rather long face, hair ( thin in front) black, clean shaved, stoops slightly, of good address; dress, black frock coat, dark fancy vest, striped trousers, dark tie, black and white check cap, sometimes wears a fawn colour mackintosh. When in conversation he frequently uses the phrase " you understand." Stated he was employed by a firm of house fur- nishers at Southampton. May be found singing or reciting at public houses. B." engraved on plate, and 2s. 6d.— A MAN, who gave the name of FREDERICK JAMES LEONARD, age about 26, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, high cheek bones, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes sup- posed brown, good teeth, old scar on upper lip, heart tattooed on one wrist, small scar on knee- and left side of body ; dress, dark brown jacket and vest, light cloth trousers, long fawn overcoat, red, green and amber colour tie, brown button boots, navy blue cap, wore a leather belt with 3 pockets. Appearance of a groom. He took lodgings, 4th inst., stated he belonged to the 5th Lancers, and had recently returned from South Africa, also that he had been in Netley hospital, and intended purchasing a tobacconist business. A bricklayer or labourer ; native of Exmouth. May be found on public works or at docks. Warrant issued. Photograph can be seen on application. DORSETSHIRE. 12.— Blandford { County).— For stealing a lady's long gold watch chain, very small links, square pattern; and £ 5— EDWARD ANTHONEY, alius SAVILLE, age 27, height 6 ft., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes grey, front upper teeth artificial, " Semper Paratus" tattooed on right hand, " Chi la Morte" on left, " Ted" on arm, of smart appearance ; dress, light mackintosh with velvet collar, dark striped trousers, light bow tie, dark tweed cap, light brown boots. A prostitute. Is well known to the Police at Houghton- le- Spring and Sunderland, having been convicted there of larceny and soliciting. Warrant issued. Allen, Brentwood. ll.— Epping { County).— For obtaining £ 10 by a worthless cheque— HAROLD XENOPHON, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complexion dark, hair, beard and whiskers ( cut short) dark brown, eyes grey, walks lame, speaks with American accent; dress, grey flannel Norfolk jacket and trousers, grey soft felt hat, lace boots. HEREFORDSHIRE. 22.— Leominster { County).— For stealing £ 2 and a pair of boots, 21st April, at Avmestrey— PRISCILL V. REYNOLDS, age 25 or 26, height 5 ft., stout build, complexion fresh, full face, hair dark ( has been cut short): dress, black three- quarter length jacket, black dress, dark or grey felt hat, trimmed red black and white silk and red flower, lace boots with plain fronts. A domestic servant; native of Dilwyn. Is believed to have lived at Bristol and Penarih. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Price, Leominster, or Sergeant Rooke, Wigmore. HER TFORDSHIRE. 23.— Hertford { County). — For obtaining money by false pretences— A MAN, age 40 to 45, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, full face, hair ( turning grey) and heavy moustache dark, lame left leg ; dress, dark overcoat, velvet collar, dark suit, black hard felt hat, large silver curb pattern chain. He calls upon publicans and confectioners, states he will appoint thecn as agents to the Hygienic Cigarette Company, ofEers a good salary and commission, then obtains money for the cigarettes and decamps. Supposed identical with Man, Case No. 43,16th ult. ( See Special Notice, 2nd ult.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Shore, Hertford. 2i— Hitchin { County).— For an indecent assault on a girl, age 15, at Seacombe, 26th ult.— WALTER GEORGE PRIOR, age about 22, height about 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair ( fringe in front) dark brown, eyes blue, of delicate appear- ance ; dress, blue serge suit, hard felt hat. A native of Perry Green, Bishop's Stortford. Recently discharged from Chelmsford Prison. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Rey- nolds, Hitchin. LANCASHIRE. 29.— Chorley { County).— For stealing a pair of paperhanger's scissors, nearly new, about 11 in. long, " Hunter and Sons, Sheffield," stamped on joint, a horn stamped on other side ; 1 do. brush, nearly new, about 10 in. long, white bristles, maker " Hamilton, London," stamped thereon— BENJAMIN JAMES LAMBERT, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, hollow cheeks, moustache dark, slightly bow- legged, turns his toes inwards ; dress, dark coat and trousers, paint spots thereon, dark tie, lace boots. A groom ; stated he had worked at hunting stables in Cheshire, as a cab driver at Newcastle, Staffs, and as a coachman at Bnrton- on- Trent. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ormerod, Kirkham. 32. — Skerton { County). — For stealing, between 18th and 21st ult., at Over Kellet, near Carnforth, a silver English lever watch, No. 8754, maker " Ralph Bond, Morecambe," on dial, out of repair, seconds hand missing, white metal curb pattern Albert attached to watch with a piece of bootlace ; and £ 20 16s.— A MAN, age 18, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes dark ; dress, 2 brown vests, 1 with sleeves, faded, drab cord breeches, blue and white leather collar, dark blue cap, brown leather leggings, heavy lace boots. Stated he was a native of Stockton- on- Tees. Is an expert milker ; may seek employ- ment - with farmers or cow- keepers, or may be travelling with a waxworks show. A native of Southend- on- Sea. Prior to 9 years ago he was employed as assistant clerk to the Justices of Dartford ( Kent) Petty Sessions. Absconded 2nd inst.; may endeavour to leave the country. DEVONSHIRE. 35.— Plymouth ( Borough).— For stealing a horse and trap ( recovered)— GEORGE SPRIGGS, alias WOODS, ROBERTS, BRUETON, and PAYNE, Office No. 1170- 02, age 24, height 5 ft. tipster and notorious pickpocket. He left Ply- mouth, 4th ult., and stated that he was going into Cornwall for the purpose of attending the various fairs. May be found at boxing booths. Was at Falmouth, 10th ult., where he enlisted 7 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes brown, believed clean shaved, scar centre fore- head, right temple, 2 on left and 3 on right knee, dot left forearm; dress, when last seen, dark grey suit, black bowler hat, white muffler. A into the 5th Lancers in the name of George Payne, and absconded from the Cavalry Barracks, Canterbury, next day. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Plymouth.
