SPECIAL NOTICE. Letters relating to criminal business addressed by other Police Forces to Scotland Yard, are very frequently delayed, owing to the envelopes con- taining them being directed incorrectly or inade- quately. In such cases prompt attention cannot be assured unless the letters are addressed " The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, New Scotland Yard, London. S. W." SPECIAL NOTICE. NUMEROUS complaints have been received in London, and from many places in the Provinces, of attempted frauds upon persons of large means by the " Gold Brick Swindle." The fraud begins with the receipt of a letter from America addressed to someone whose death has lately been announced, referring gratefully to his generosity in the past, and telling him that the business—" some venture in gold mining"— which he helped to inaugurate, has succeeded and that his share of the profits awaits his sending to claim it. This leads to a correspondence between the swindler and the relatives of the deceased, and ultimately to the despatch of an agent to America to receive the bullion. When that stage is reached, a demand for money is on some pretence or other sprung upon the victim, and the swindler endeavours to induce him to part with some hundreds of pounds on the security of a solid bar of gold, which is in reality brass. The perpetrators of this fraud are now most active. ( Corres., C. I. D., No. 133001). APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT.
