J ' 1. TIONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which, may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must he clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must he in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. In most cases in which Licence- holders and Supervisees residing in the Provinces fail to report themselves and whose arrest is con- sequently desired, the Editor is requested to insert the particulars in the GAZETTE. A private of the Royal Berkshire Regi- ment. Is a good violinist. Information to Capt. Henderson, Chief Con- stable, Reading. R. back of left hand; dress, dark worsted jacket, dark trousers, brown plaid cap. A native of Aberystwyth. Belongs to the Cardigan Artillery. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Phillips, Aberystwyth. CHESHIRE. 10— Middlewich ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences— H. MCKENZIE, age about 45, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache light brown, 2 upper front teeth missing, turns his feet outwards ; dress, dark grey suit, dark three- quarter overcoat, black and white peak cap, lace boots. He represented that he was an advance agent for a menagerie. Warrant issued. 11.— Middlewich ( County).— For obtaining 400 bushels of oats by fraud, at Northwich— JOHN FORBES THORNTON, age about. 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion and hair dark, clean shaved, of good address ; dress, grey suit, dark grey ulster, fawn check lining, dark soft felt hat, wearing a gold signet ring. Stays at hotels. Had in his possession a large dark American trunk and a brown canvas dress suit case. May be accompanied by a man, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion and hair dark, clean shaved, slouching gait, appearance of a butcher or horse dealer, and a woman, age about 30, Bhort, slight build ; had with her a child, age 7 months. CORNWALL. 12.— Truro ( City). — For embezzlement — THOMAS SAWYKR, age about 30, hair ( wavy) and moustache dark, eyes blue, aquiline nose, hesitating manner when rpeaking. DURHAM. 13.— Stockton - on - Tees ( County).— For uttering, 12th inst., 2forged£ 5 Bankof England notes, Nos. 54152, 54199, dated 9th February, 1900 A WOMAN who gave the name of BROWN, age 40 to 45, height about 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, rather broad features, hair dark brown ( turning grey), eyes brown, bad teeth in lower jaw, chin recedes when talking, slight Welsh accent; dress, grey mixture tight fitting costume, blue in collar, black toque, yellow braid round crown. Stated she came from Cardiff. She stayed at a temperance hotel, made purchases in the district, and in payment uttered the above notes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. HAMPSHIRE. 16.— Basingstoke ( County).— For obtain- ing food and lodging by false pretences— JAMES O'HARA, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion pale, cheeks sunken, hair, moustache and pointed whiskers dark brown ( turning grey), eyes grey; wearing long blue overcoat, blue cap, black tie, lace boots. He took lodgings, representing himself as an electrical engineer. ( See Case No. 42, 27th December last.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hale, Basingstoke. 17.— Winchester ( City).— For non- pay- ment of arrears under a maintenance order— GEORGE RUSSELL, age about 35, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., stout build, complexion fair, hair ( bald on top) light brown, eyes light blue, suffers from epilepsy. ISLE OF WIGHT. 20.— Newport ( Town). — For stealing £ 15 13s. 6d., between August and November, 1901— THOMAS IRWINE, age 34, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes grey. A native of Armagh. Is a sergeant of the 3rd Northumberland Fusiliers, from which he is now a deserter. He re- enlisted at Dublin in 1900; previously served 12 years in the Royal Irish Fusiliers. KENT. 21.— Canterbury ( County).— For lar- ceny— WALTER JAMES HADLEY, alias WALTER HARRIS, age about 27, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes blue, scar bridge of nose, tattooed cross, anchor and heart right forearm, bust of woman and bracelet left forearm; dress, brownish tweed Norfolk jacket, white jacket under, white sweater, blue cloth trousers, brown boots, cap. A native of Canterbury. Previously convicted at Maidstone Assizes and East Kent Quarter Sessions. Warrant issued. Information to Supt, Jacobs, Canterbury. £ 1 REWARD. 22.— Canterbury ( City).— For deserting his wife and 3 children, leaving them chargeable to the Common Fund of the Canterbury Union— GEORGE ELLERTON, age 28, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, moustache sandy, eyes hazel, burn scar 1 forefinger, addicted to drink ; dress, dark coat and vest, grey trousers, cap, lace boots. A french polisher; native of Canterbury. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Canter- bury Guardians to any person giving such in- formation as will lead to the arrest of Ellerton. Information to the Chief Constable, Canterbury. 23.— Folkestone ( Borough).— For larceny ( bailee), 26th uit.— HENRY SHARP, alias STUBBS, and SMITH, age 21, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, hair ( curly) brown, small moustache light, eyes brown; dress, black diagonal suit, dark mackintosh with cape, old grey check cap. A rag and bone gatherer ; native of Burton- on- Trent. Absconded 2nd inst. May be found at low beer houses or common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Photograph can be seen on application. LANCASHIRE. 24.— Bootle ( Borough).— For failing to re- port — Supervisee THOMAS KELLY, alias HENRY MCCARTHY, HENRY VINCENT, HENRY GRAHAM, THOMAS MORAN, and FRANK GOUGH, Office No. 1742- 99, age 40, height 5 ft. 3| in., complexion dark, hair dark brown ( turning grey), eyes hazel, scar left thumb and several on arms and shoulder blades, hairy mole left forearm and red mole right elbow, several brown spots on face, neck and chest, large nose, slightly inclined to right, ruptured left side. A dealer; native of Manchester. Sen- tenced at Belfast 24th April, 1900, to 18 months hard labour and 3 years police supervision for larceny. Liberated from Belfast Prison 23rd October, 1901. Information to the Chief Constable, Bootle. 25.— Wigan ( Borough).— For embezzlement — HARRIS SHOMBERG, age 40 to 50, height about 5 ft. 4 in., rather bow- legged, stoops slightly, hair black, slight beard and moustache dark; wearing dark grey overcoat, black hard felt hat, lace boots. A Polish Jew. Is well known in Wales. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Wigan. LEICESTERSHIRE. 26.— Leicester ( Borough). — For stealing from his lodgings, bth inst., a vest; 1 pair trousers; and £ 2 5s.— FRANK HOLT, age 24, height 5 ft. 3f in., slight build, complexion fresh, wrinkles on forehead, large mouth, thin features, hair dark, eyes brown, small round scar right side of head, brown birthmark left buttock, burn scar right kneecap, bad teeth. A native of Liverpool. Has been previously convicted at Liverpool, Man- chester, Birmingham, Stafford, Warrington, Stoke- on- Trent, and Doncaster. 27.— Leicester ( Borough).— For withhold- ing, 23rd ult., £ 25, the monies of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, Leicester Branch — WILLIAM SHEPPARD, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair, moustache and eyes dark, talkative ; dress, dark jacket suit. An insurance agent. Absconded 15th inst. Warrant issued. 28.— Leicester ( Borough). — For stealing, 19th inst., by housebreaking, a lady's 18 ct. gold ring, plaited pattern; 1 do. gold dress ring, set 3 garnets ; ] do., studded with small knobs round edge, rubies in centre ( 1 missing)— TWO MEN, 1st, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 to 8 in., slight build, complexion dark; wearing dark three- quarter length overcoat, black soft felt hat. 2nd, age 23 to 25, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion dark, moustache brown, knock- kneed ; wearing dark three- quarter length overcoat with fancy shoulders, black soft felt hat. LINCOLNSHIRE. 29.— Grimsby ( Borough).— For stealing £ 7, 8th inst.— FRED OXLEY, age about 53, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) and eyes brown, tattooed on wrists, slightly lame, walks with a stick, carries his head forward ; dress, black jacket and vest, grey check trousers, black cap, old lace boots. MONTGOMER YSHIRE. £ 1 REWARD. 30.— Llanidloes ( County).— For deserting his 2 children, leaving them chargeable to the Newtown and Llanidloes Union — GEORGE OLIVER, age 47, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes grey, scar over right eye. A cooper. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Newtown and Llanidloes Union, to any person giving such information as will lead to the arrest of Oliver.
