All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OK THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW . SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken vpon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the, payment ihvst be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for scriaus offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photo- graph or slwtch of a stolen article. 6. ")/ announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature / officer of not less runk than Superintendent; and, if the name nf such person is ' A < red to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. LTIOBTS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property than Inspector, or analogous thereto. ust be guaranteed by an officer of not leu rank 8. Anmuneements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number and as fu r as prartteable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen projtcrty to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the 10. Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than iwon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written, on one side of the puper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. DEVONSHIRE. 9.— Exeter ( City).— For conspiracy and fraud— JOHN HANCOCK ( supposed false), age 55 to 60, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark, whiskers and mous- tache turning grey ; dress, long black frock coat, black trousers and vest, black hat. Supposed a native of London. He represents himself as a retired hop merchant. — CHARLES ADAMS ( supposed false), age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair light brown, moustache and slight side whiskers brown, very talkative ; dress, dark coat and vest, grey trousers, blue overcoat, grey soft felt hat, usually carries a crook stick. Supposed a native of London. Both appeared to have a large sum of money in their possession. They attend auction sales and markets, obtain horses, & c., and decamp without paying for same. Hancock left here on 13th inst., supposed with a bay mare about 15 hands, white star on forehead, a set of brass mounted harness, and a chocolate colour trap, red stripes. Adams left the following morning with 2 horses, 1st, a chestnut mare, white face; 2nd, a black horse, R. H. A. stamped on forefeet. Warrant issued. SPECIAL NOTICE. In certain cases questions have arisen as to the payment for photographs applied for by Police Forces under Home Office circular of 15th March, 1897. The Registrar of Habitual Criminals is therefore authorised by the Secretary of State to say that, in any ordinary case, a photograph is not necessary to enable his Department to identify a prisoner, the measurements and finger prints being sufficient for the purpose ; but if a photo- graph is applied for, or if, in any rare case, it should be required to complete the identification, the cost will > be charged to the Police Force interested. HAMMOND, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair brown, heavy moustache light, of good address; wearing the stolen blue diagonal suit, broad brimmed Panama hat, brown boots. He took lodgings stating he had taken a business in the neighbourhood. ( Supposed identical with Herbert Berkeley, Case No. 17, 30th ult.) Warrant issued. Information to Capt. ESSEX. 13.— Chelmsford ( County).-— For stealing, 31st ult., at Ingatcstone, a brown and black check single- breasted overcoat ; 3 pairs new black leather leggings, a number stamped inside; a quantity of leather; 1 pair shooting boots; 1 pair plain boots, size 7 ( both recently repaired) ; 1 pair buckskin breeches; 1 r^ d and white striped Oxford shirt, and a number of shoemakers' tools — HENRY PATON, alias HARRY TATUM, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion fair, hair brown, moustache light brown, lost right leg at thigh, walks with a wooden stump, dress old brown coat and trousers, dark cap. A tramping shoemaker ; native of Long Melford. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 14.— Grays ( County).— For failing to appear as a witness at Grays Petty Sessions, in a case of felonious wounding— PATRICK MACKEY, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, slight moustache and eyes brown; dress, dark jacket, light tweed or cord trousers, light cap, usually wears a red shirt. EDWARDS and SPINDLER, age about 33, height 5 ft. 9 in., hair, moustache, and eyes dark brown ; dress, dark grey morning suit, soft felt hat, lace boots. Carried a small leather bag. He represented that he was a traveller for the Hotel Linen Drapery Co., London. The above cheque was returned from the bank marked " No account." Both stated they were commercial travellers. Warrant issued. Sentenced at Birmingham Sessions, 30th April, 1900, to 9 months hard labour and 1 year supervision for larceny. Liberated on remission, 7th January, 1901. 7205. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, Liverpool. Licence- holder THOMAS JONES, Office No. 2178- 00, Case No. 13, 9th March last, is not now wanted. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1901. W. chest, and right side of back. A physician ; native of Templemore. Sentenced at Central Criminal Court, 25th June, 1891, to 7 jears penal servitude and remanet of former sentence for forgery. Licenced 24th April, 1901. Licence expires 29th July, 1905. A. H. U. 572. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. dark, snub nose, well educated, speaks French and German fluently. A good pianist. Stated she was a native of Hudderslield. May seek employment as lady's maid. Supposed previously convicted and wanted elsewhere.
