All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communication relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR o r THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension it sought will he inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to entile action to he taken won them by anotlter force. 3. Particulars at to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 15/. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, mutt be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not lett rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to he inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed hy the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, at the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they- are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the foot, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in tkc next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will he wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to he received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not, later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, eit, her at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street, Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only he accepted rn payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. E. R. HENRY, Editor. CUMBERLAND. 10.— Whitehaven ( County).—¥ or carnal knowledge of a girl under 13, at Cleator Moor, 24th June last— NICHOLAS SARA, alias KENT, age 62, height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair ( bald on top), beard and moustache dark, eyes blue, blue mark on noso ; dress, dark tweed jacket suit, black hard hat, old lace boots. A watch repairer; native of Cornwall. Is an army pensioner. Absconded 5th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Kelly, Whitehaven. DORSETSHIRE. 11.— Blandford ( County).— For obtaining £ 3 by a worthless cheque, and stealing, 8th inst., a pneumatic safety bicycle, black enamelled, flat handle bars, cork handles, white celluloid tips, free wheel, Bowden brake, small black racing saddle, small plated lamp, makers Lucas & Son, pump with " Warwick tyres" stamped thereon, patent toe- clips, bell, patch in back tyre about 6 in. long, no mudguards— HERBERT BERKELEY. alias YANE and HORACE LORREQUHER, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., well built, complexion fresh, hair ( short) and heavy moustache ( inclined to sandy) brown, pointed at ends, eyes blue, mole on right cheek, sometimes speaks with American accent; dress, brown and grey mixture suit, grey and black plaid tie, fastened to front with a gold wire brooch with name Violetta, white straw hat with pale blue and black band, lace box- calf boots, wearing a gold ring set white stone on right little finger. TUESDAY, AUGUST 20, 1901. 12.— Dorchester ( County). — For embezzling £ 33, at Portland — CHARLES SANDERS, age 36, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes ( blind in one) grey, wears glasses; dress, blue serge coat and vest, blue . striped trousers, black bowler hat. Had with him a square brown leather bag. A canteen manager ; native of London Warrant issued. 13.— Dorchester ( County).— For neglecting to maintain his wife and children— RICHARD BENJAMIN CRITCHELL, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion, hair and eyes dark ; dress, dark jacket and vest, brown trousers, dark cap. ESSEX. 14.— Romford ( County).— For being concerned with others in custody charged with stealing a horse, cart and harness ( recovered), see Case No. 67— CHARLES WHITE, age 34, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., rather slight build, complexion sallow, sharp features, hair and moustache dark brown ; dress, dark jacket suit, white straw hat with black band, sometimes wears a cap or bowler hat. A low horse dealer; native of Portsmouth. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Creasy, Romford. 15.— Saffron Walden ( County). — For larceny ( lodgings) between ;- i0th June and 6th inst.— F. or E. SAGE, alias SMITH, age 50 to 60, height about 5 ft. 4£ in., stout build, complexion ruddy, hair light ; dress, browntbodice, black skirt, dark bonnet trimmed with '- flowers — LIZZIE SAGE, alias SMITH, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 1\ in., rather stout build, complexion very pale, hair dark, good teeth; dress, pink bodice, fawn skirt, white waist band, white sailor hat. They take lodgings, state they are nurses or dressmakers, commit a larceny, and decamp. May be found at casual wards. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Prvke, Saffron Walden. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 16.— Chipping Campden ( County).— For obtaining food by false pretences— WILLIAM BARTLETT, age 38, height 5 ft. 8 in., rather slight build, complexion pale, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes hazel, slight impediment in speech; dress, blue serge jacket suit, blue tie, brown cap, light boots with square toes. A carpenter ; native of Bloxham, Oxfordshire, Previously convicted at Oxford and Banbury in October and December, 1900, respectively. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Chipping Campden. HAMPSHIRE. 17.— Aldershot ( County). — For stealing £ 2 18s., 5th inst,— JAMES DIXON, age 24, height 5 ft. 11 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, slight moustache dark, eyes hazel, scar on forehead and left forefinger ; dress, supposed dark blue suit and cap. A painter; native ot' Tory, Aberdeen. Is a deserter from the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. 18.— Gosport ( County).— For deserting his wife and family— JOHN RILEY, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 6£ in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, large cut mark on one forefinger and hand, marks on left breast. A labourer; native of Dromore, Tyrone. May seek employment at coal mines. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Silver, Gosport. 19.— 1Winchester ( City).— For stealing, 31st ult., 2 pictures ( recovered) — F. K. J. CASTLEDON ( supposed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion dark, full face, hair dark brown, slight moustache and eyes dark ; dress, black morning coat and vest, light check cloth trousers, light plaid tie ( mixed colours), white straw hat with black band, lace boots. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Felton, Winchester. 20.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For obtaining money by a worthless cheque, drawn on the Hong- Kong and Shanghai Bank, Lombard Street, E. C.— F. J. ARMINE, age 20J, height 5 ft., 10| in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey ; wearing uniform of the Royal Marine Artillery, from which he is a deserter. HERTFORDSHIRE. 21.— Hatfield ( County).— For deserting his wife and children— STEPHEN RACHER, age 32, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, complexion and hair dark, eyes dark brown, high cheek bones. Reynolds, Hatfield. 22.— Hertford ( County).— For embezzling £ 5 9s.,. 31st ult.— HENRY LEE, age about 28, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, eyes blue. A brewer's drayman; native of Baldock. Warrant issued. 23.— Hertford ( County). — For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— HARRY WILSON ( supposed false), age 55 to 60, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion, hair ( turning grey), moustache and sid- i whi^ k^ rs dark; dress, old brown overcoat, dark grey trousers, sometimes wears box- cloth gaiters, heavy lace boots, had with him a leather hat box and a portmanteau, " F. W." on brass plate. He represented that he was employed by an American firm to purchase cattle. Warrant issued. Information to Supt, Shore, Hertford. 24.— JHitchin ( County).— Forstealing, 9th ult., a pony ( recovered) — WILLIAM DIMMOCK, age about 26, height 5 ft, 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair and slight moustache dark, eyes brown ; dress, grey jacket and vest, dark trousers, black and white shepherd's plaid cap, lace boots. A native of Hitchin. May be found in company of low horse dealers. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Reynolds, Hitchin. 25.— Watford ( County).— For stealing, 10th inst., £ 1 4s. 6d.; 1 lion shilling; 2 plain gold wecUling rings ; 1 gold keeper do., 3 stripes and alternate spaces plain WILSON, age about 30, he'ght about 5 ft. 4 in., inclined to be stout, complexion pale, rather full face, hair ( curly in front, thin on top) light brown, clean shaved ; dress, green mixture loose fitting jacket, black or dark blue vest, grey mixture trousers, white crickettiug shirt, linen marked " S. KENT. 26.— Chatham ( County). — For larceny — THOMAS ALLEN, age 20±', height 5 ft. 4 in., hair dark brown, tattooed shield and outline of flag on chest, bunch of grapes and 2 flags, flowers and cutters right arm, horseshoe, whip, and cross flags left forearm ; dress, black coat, dark striped trousers, grey skull cap, cycling shoes. A seaman. Is a deserter from the 1st Battn. Connaught Rangers. Information to Supt. Sargent, Chatham. 27.— Tonbridge ( County).— For embezzlement— JOHN GEORGE MARTIN, age about 15, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, rather long red nose ; dress, dust coat, light vest, light grey trousers, hard felt hat. lace boots. A native of Southborough,' Kent. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Styles, Tonbridge. 28 — Canterbury ( City).— For stealing, 30th ult., 1 pair of brown leather boots, " 8, C adapted " marked on straps— A MAN, who gave the name of CLAPPERTON, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light; dress, light grey suit, white straw Alpine hat, wearing 2 gold rings, 1 curb, other set dark stone, on 3rd left finger. He takes apartments, calls on tradesmen, selects articles and asks that th « y may be sent to his lodgings, on receipt of which he decamps. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Canterbury. LANCASHIRE. 29 — Chorley ( County).— For stealing, 28th ult., at Much Hoole. a bicycle, the " Alert," black enamelled frame, 88 gear, plain gear wheel " 56 " marked on inside, Westwood rims, Woodley. tyres, B. S. A. hubs, bone handle bars, forward higs, rat trap pedals. King of the road lamp attached, no brake or mudguards— CHARLES BOYLE, age about 19, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, complexion stllow, hair brown, slight moustache light, woman's head tattooed on left arm, 1st and 2nd fingers of right hand deficient ; dress, grey suit, brown peak cap, lace boots. Was employed as an ostler; supposed a native of Preston. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. 30.— Kirkham ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, 20th ult, at Fleetwood— A MAN, name supposed CHARLES SIMPSON, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, complexion fresh, long features, hair dark brown, heavy moustache dark, of smart appearance; dress, Ldue serge jacket suit, brown iweed cap, brown lace boots, may be wearing a blue dungaree suit. A plumber or fitter. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Omerod, Kirkham. 31.— Widnes ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by talse pretences— GERTIE GREY, age about- 23, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue: dress, blue costume, 3 white buttons on one breast, 2 on other, black straw hat trimmed black feathers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt, Keighley, Widnes. MIDLOTHIAN. 32.— Edinburgh ( County).— For embezzlement— WILLIAM FYFE, age 45 to 50, height about 6 ft., stout build, complexion, hair, heavy moustache and side whiskers dark, may now be wearing a beard, full face ; dress, old blue serge jacket suit, blue tie, flat crowned hard felt half which he usually wears on the back of his head. A brewer's traveller and collector; native of Midlothian. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Colonel Borthwick, Chief Constable, County Buildings, Edinburgh. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 33. — Newport ( Borough).— For stealing £ 1 14s. 6d , 6tn inst,— ARTHUR TOMBS, alias LONDON, age 31, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion sallow, thin features, hair dark brown, eyes ( right nearly closed) blue ; d r e B S , blue serge jacket and vest, light striped trousers, light cloth cap, light lace boots. A native of Great Malvern. May seek employment as an outside porter at shops and hotels. Has been previously convicted at Malvern, Ledbury, and Newport, May be found at common lodging houses. Had in his possession a small American hand organ. Absconded 6th inst. Warrant issued. 34.— Newport ( Borough)— On commitment warrant, having been sentenced to 3 months imprisonment for gaming— JOHN MANNING, age 39, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair brown, heavy moustache light brown, small burn mark left breast and left knee, boil mark left hip, pock mark on left shoulder and eyebrow, scar on bridge of nose, stoops slightJy. * A native of Bristol. Frequents race courses. Is fond of the company of low betting men and card sharpers. Information to Head Constable Sinclair, Newport. NORFOLK. 35.— Norwich ( City).— for forging a telegram. thereby obtaining £ l0, 1st inst.— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., inclined to be stout, complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark, side whiskers; dress, dark suit, straw or black hard hat. Appearance of a commercial traveller. Information to the Chief Constable, Guildhall, Norwich. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 36.—. Northampton ( County).— For horsestealing, WILLIAM HITCHENS, alias BUTCHER, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 1.0 in.,, complexion fresh hair ( turning grey), stubby moustache, and eyes dark; dress, grey suit, large pockets, black hard hat, sometimes wears a long, light colour dust coat, brown leather leggings. Appearance of a horse dealer. Is well known to dragsmen, visits horse fairs. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Webster, County Police Office, Northampton. 37.— Northampton ( Borough).— For stealing, 3rd inst., a lady's old gold ring, set 7 turquoise ; I lady's gold keeper, chased, thin and broken ; 1 long gold necklet, small round link pattern, tied in two knots ; 1 long gold neckchain, thin wire link pattern, amethyst heart, and " Baden- Powell^ photograph, pendants ; 1 silver pencil case, a silver cornet, 1 inch long; 2 Jubilee shillings and 1 lion shilling, mounted with small rings— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, moustache-' light ; dress, light colour jacket and trousers, light cap. He took lodgings, committed a larceny, and decamped. He leit behind 2 large brown leather portmantears ( one of which has been' identified as stolen from the L. & N. W. Railway Station, Northampton), other with initials " W. H. Y." in large black letters thereon, containing paper bag samples, pieces of carpet, and green cloth, 1 small green blind and roller, 1 old brown coat; 1 Oxford shirt, " The Don " inside collar; 1 pair of merino pants, 1 undershirt.
