All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, u/ ul all communications relating to them, should he addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will he inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken noon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be gieen, aiid the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and cngrarings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must, be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of wit less rank than Superintendent; and. if the name of such person is required to be inserted and non- arrant is in force against him, the requisition must, be signed by the chief officii- of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. LXI OX S. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must he guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen projierty bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents o- r stolen property to be inserted • in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor twtice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement wit! he wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must he in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, cither at the office. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE The amount of stolen property at present " circu- lated " by the Metropolitan Police has become so inordinately large as to prejudice or destroy the practical value of the records, and it has been found necessary to limit it very considerably. It has been decided, therefore, to discontinue the " cir- culation " in Informationsand Pawnbrokers' Lists of all property stolen in the provinces, unless where there are grounds for believing that the - property has found its way to the Metropolis. Chief Con- stables are requested accordingly, when forwarding lists of stolen property to Scotland Yard, to send with them a letter to that effect. And if bills or circulars are received in future, unaccompanied by such a letter, it will be assumed that the " circula- tion " of the particulars they contain is not desired. The same course will be followed with respect to property lost and persons missing. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1.— C Division.— For obtaining £ 50 by false pretences— CHARLES CASTILLO, alias L. LIEVEN, a Spaniard, age 4 >, height 5 ft. in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) brown, turning grey, eyes brown, quick in manner and speech, carries his head a little forward; dress, dark morning coat and vest, grey striped trousers, black hard felt or silk hat, boots with pointed toes. Warrant issued. 2.— C Division.— For stealing ( bailee) an antique sevres tobacco pot— DANIEL EMILE NEWGAS, age about > 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, complexion and eyes dark, hair and slight moustache dark brown ; dress, black frock coat, silk hat. Warrant issued. 3.— C Division.— For stealing a quantity of cigars and cigarettes— WILLIAM GRAHAM, age 21 or 22, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes grey ; dress, dark grey jacket suit, straw hat. A native of London. Warrant issued. 4.— E Division.— For abduction of a girl under 16— DANTE DOLMONICO, an Italian, age 20, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion, hair and eyes dark ; dress, dark jacket and vest, grey tweed trousers, light skull cap. Warrant issued. 5.— N Division.— For stealing 3s. and embezzling 6s. 3£ d.— ELI EWERS, age 20, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion, hair and eyes dark ; dress, grey jacket suit, black hard felt hat. BEDFORDSHIRE. 6. — Leighton Buzzard ( County).— For stealing 6 heifers, 12th inst.— THOMAS DENTON, age 37, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., com- plexion fresh, hair and moustache black, eyes dark, of smart appearance; dress, dark grey suit, hard felt hat. A butcher; native of Salford, Beds. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Anniwell, Leighton Buz- zard. BERKSHIRE. 7 — Wokingham ( County).— For stealing, 23rd ult., a light brown wooden box, 34 in. by 18 in. ; a lady's pneumatic bicycle, front forks bent; 1 pair of blue and white vases— CHARLIE SIMPSON, alias NASH, age 20, height 5 ft, 3 or 4 in., complexion very dark, hair ( curly on fore- head) black, slight moustache dark, eyes dark; dress, light grey jacket and vest, dark large ribbed cord breeches, navy blue cloth cap, black leather leggings, brown lace boots. A groom; native of Hampshire. Was accompanied by a woman, age 34, height 4 ft. 6 to 8 in., complexion ( freckled) fair, hair light brown ; dress, black dress, black straw hat, trimmed black, lace boots, a native of Finchampstead ; and a child, age 7 years, com- plexion fair, hair light, ej es grey ; dress, white dress, navy blue jacket, white buttons, white straw hat with pink band, lace boots. Warrant issued. 8- Wokingham ( County).— For obtain- ing £ 33 by worthless cheques on the London : ^ d Provincial Bank, Teddington Branch, 15th inst., at Wargrave — CHARLES EDMUNDS, alias EDMUND, CHARLES WILKINS, HENRY JOBSON, RICHARD TURNER, WILLIAM WHITEHOUSE, & c., & c., age 41, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes grey; dress, dark grey jacket suit, black tie, black hard felt hat, wearing a silver Albert with medal attached, and a ring on right little finger. BRECONSHIRE. £ 1 REWARD. 9.— Brecon ( County).— For deserting his wife, leaving her chargeable to the Brecon Union — WILLIAM WILLIAMS, age 43, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, mous- tache sandy, eyes hazel, addicted to drink ; dress, dark reefer jacket and vest, cord trousers, hard felt hat, lace boots. A mason or bricklayer; native of Brecon. ( See Case No. 3, 30th March, 1900.) The above reward will be paid by the Board of Guardians, Brecon, to any person giving such information as will lead to the arrest of Williams. Warrant issued. BUCKING HA MS HI RE. 10.— Fenny Stratford ( County). — For stealing a silver watch, steel hands, glass missing; 1 gold chain, small links, bar pattern, « 1 link tied with black silk ; 1 pair rubbing gloves, black horse hair in palms— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( curly) and mous- tache light, oyes blue, dent in bridge of nose ; dress, dark jacket and trousers with narrow white stripes, green fancy double- breasted vest, hard felt hat. CHESHIRE. 11 .— Liscard ( County).— For obtaining £ 3 3s. 6d. by false pretences— WILLIAM HOOLEY, age 25 to 30, height about 5ft. 10 in., complexion 2 THE POLICE GAZETTE. CUMBERLAND. £ 1 REWARD. 12.— Brampton ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Brampton Union— HENRY VINELL, age 49, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., hair brown, eyes ( squints left) hazel. A labourer ; native of Southampton ; may be found working at iron works, coal pits, or as a cartel-. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. Birkett, clerk to the Brampton Urban District Council, to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension of Vinell. Information to Supt. Simon, Brampton. DERBYSHIRE. YS.— Eckington ( County).— For assault on police and an offence under the Poaching Pre- vention Act. 12th inst., at Whitwell — JOHN GREAVES, age about 40, height 6 ft. 2 or 3 in., slight build, hair turning grey, moustache light. — RICHARD SAVAGE, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., rather stout build, complexion sallow, hair brown, moustache dark. A collier. Both are notorious poachers. — WILLI AM SMITH, alias LALSE, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, moustache light; dress, light tweed coat, brown trousers, peak cap. DEVONSHIRE. 14.— Exeter ( County).— For escaping from Exminster Lunatic Asylum, 10th inst,— ALBERT ALFRED TURNER, a criminal lunatic, age 23, height 5 ft. 3J in., hair and eyes dark brown, A. T. right forearm, M. and heart left fc, earm, subject to epileptic fits ; dress, blu6 pilot coat, blue cloth vest with brass buttons, light cord trousers, brown leather leggings. A native of Woodham, Surrey. Has served in the Army and Navy. May seek employment on merchant ships or at farms. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter. 15 — Devonport ( Borough).— For stealing £ 2— JOHN HY. COLLIER, age 49, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion dark, thin features, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes ( sunken) light blue, 2 cut scars about the size of a threepenny piece back of head, burn mark about the size of a shilling on shoulder. A labourer or navvy ; may be found on public works. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Matters, Devon- port. DORSETSHIRE. 16.— Weymouth ( Borough).— For stealing, 22nd inst., a pair of boots ; 1 grey mixture check pattern jacket and vest — JAMES PATRICK McCOY, age 20, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, full face, hair light brown, fiat feet; wear- ing the stolen clothes. Is a deserter from the Southern Division Royal Garrison Artillery. Information to Chief Constable Eacock, Wey- mouth. DURHAM. 17. — South Shields ( Borough). — For stealing, between 1st and 29th April last, £ 21 8s. 6d.; 1 white flannel petticoat; 1 pink striped cotton do. with frill; 1 red and black striped blouse ; 1 night dress, marked " J." or " D. J. Riddley"; 1 white cotton table cloth — A WOMAN, age about 35, tall, rather stout build, com- plexion swarthy, hair dark ; dress, red cape with fur around neck, red dress with white spots, red felt hat. A gipsy fortune- teller, hawks lace. Was accompanied by other gipsies who had with them a grey horse and van. Warrant issued. 18. — South Shields ( Borough). — For stealing ( bailee), 26th April last, a watch ( re- covered)— HARRY JAMES JARVIS, age 43, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache ginger, crooked nose, eyes blue; shabbily dressed. A jobbing watchmaker. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Mot ant, South Shields. 19.— Sunderland ( Borough).— For failing to report — License holder ROBERT KNIGHT, alias DRAYCOTT, SIMPSON, HAHRSON, HUNT, JAMES, and BONNER, Office No. 1310- 01, age 57, height 5 ft. 3 § in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) grey, eyes blue, scar left back of head, centre forehead, left eyebrow, left side chest, left groin, right thumb deformed, faint tattoo mark back of left wrist and ba « k of right forearm, bracelet and star under back of right wrist. A sawyer; native of Morley, near Leeds. Sentenced at Durham Quarter Sessions, 2nd January, 1899, to 3 years penal servitude for larceny from the person. Licensed 25th May last. B L V Z 675. 20.— Sunderland ( Borouqh).— For obtain- ing money by false pretences— A MAN, who gave the names ' of GEORGE STEVENSON and DOUGLAS, age about 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, rather sunburnt, moustache light brown, wrists tattooed, speaks with foreign accent ; dress, new blue serge jacket suit, red and blue silk neckerchief, shiny peak cap with strap, brown socks, old lace boots. He took lodgings at a Sailors' Home, 10th inst., and represented that he was a second mate, presented a printed form headed " Seaman claiming wages, By order, United States Consul," which he stated he had obtained from the American Consul at Liverpool, and was to produce same at Newcastle- on- Tyne for payment of the amount, £ 49 lis. 7d. May have a book of similar forms in his possession. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Carter, Sunder- land. 21.— Tynemouth ( Borough).— For larceny ( bailee), oetween 2nd and 9th inst.— RONALD B. STONE, age about 23, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion swarthy, hair and slight moustache dark, of smart appearance, turns his toes outwards when walking ; dress, black jacket suit, black hard felt hat. He was employed by a London fish salesman to purchase fish for him to the amount of £ 70 Is. 9d., and has not accounted for same. Previously employed on the Great Northern and Great Central Railways. Absconded 10th inst., accompanied by his wife, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion fair, hair light; dress, black skirt, jacket, and hat, sometimes wearing a grey jacket. Had with them two japanned tin trunks. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Huish, Town Hall, North Shields. ESSEX. 22.— Braintree ( County).— For stealing, 10th inst., a youth's new navy blue suit, piece of crape on arm ; 1 pair dark trousers, with white stripes ; 1 lady's black straw sailor hat; 1 white silk tie; 1 lady's black jacket— JENNY RUSSELL, alias ALICE HAZELDINE, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion, hair and eyes dark, full face ; dress, pink blouse, dark or black skirt, black straw sailor hat, old low shoes. Stated she was a native of Northampton. Is tramping the country. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Terry, Braintree. 23 — Latchingdon ( County).— For stealing, 9th inst., from the barge Faith, at Burnham, 1 pair dark cord trousers— FREDERICK VINCE, age 19, height 5 ft. 5J in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, 2 scars on right forearm, 1 on left forearm ; dress, dark grey jacket and vest, stolen trousers, dark grey cap. A native of Tillingham. Is a deserter from the Essex Regi- ment. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Halsey, Latchingdon. £ 1 REWARD. 24.— Maldon ( County).— Forstealing( bailee), 13th inst., a " Sunbeam " bicycle, No. 33036, front tyre brake, mudguards, Carter oil bath gear case, Clincher tyres— A MAN, who gave the name of WILLIAM ELSTON, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair light, supposed clear shaved; dress, dark short coat and vest, light brown trousers, black soft felt hat, brown shoes. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. Lewis Sydney Hicks, High Street, Maldon, to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the above, and the recovery of the bicycle. Information to Inspector Waterman, Maldon. 25.— Romford ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) 14th inst., a bicycle ( recovered'*— FRED- ERICK CHARLES HERBERT PALMER, alias COUSINS, age 19, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., com- plexion fair, thin features, hair ( inclined to ginger) light, very excitable; dress, black jacket and vest, light trousers and cap, all new, may be wearing a light brown covert coat, short leggings, and white broad brimmed felt hat. A cowman, or labourer ; native of Stratford. Has been previouly convicted. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Creasy, Romford. 26.— Thorpe ( County).— For obtaining a bicycle by false pretences, 1st inst. ( recovered)— JOHN TAYLOR, age 19, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion, hair, slight moustache, and eyes dark, several pimples on face ; dress, dark cloth jacket suit, white sweater, blue cloth P. & O. cap. A native of Tendring. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Thorpe. FLINTSHIRE. 27.- Mold ( County).— For stealing £ 2 ICv— WILLIAM HUGHES, age about 40, height 5 ft, 7£ in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, mous- tache light brown ; dress, black suit, and jersey. An ironworker ; native of Wolverhampton. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Davies, Mold. GLA MORGA NSHIRE. 28.— Swansea ( Borough).— For demanding money by menaces— CHARLES CARRINGTON, age about 40 ( looks younger), height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, hair light, clean shaved, eyes hazel. An actor. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Guildhall, Swansea. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 29.— Staple Hill ( County).— For escaping from the Royal Victoria Home for Inebriates at Brentry, and stealing clothing.— JAMES BY- WATER, age 34, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion and hair ( slightly bald) dark, eyes blue, flat nose, sear on head, face, and right side of neck ; dress, dark plaid suit ( coat patched at back and under arms), sleeve vest, check shirt, brown boots, all stamped R. V. H., No. 25.— PETER MONAGHAN, age 43, height 5 ft. 7j in., round shouldered, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey), and eyes brown, sear on head and face ; dress, dark brown check suit and cap, check shirt, scarf, all marked R. V. H. No. 28, light lace boots, stamped No. 28 on sole. Natives of Nottingham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cooke, Staple Hill. HER TFORDSHIRE. 30.— Hemel Hempstead ( County).— For deserting his wife and family— ROBERT BAKER, age 42, height 5 ft. 4 in., stout build, complexion and hair dark, eyes brown, scar right side of nose, bow legged ; dressed as a labourer. A native of Wigginton, Herts. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Frogley, Hemel Hemp- stead. 31.— St. Albans ( City).— For abandoning their 2 children on or about 3rd inst.— JOHN CLARK, age about 35, height 5 ft. 9 in.; dress, black jacket, blue trousers, hard felt hat. Travels with a scissors grinders' barrow, painted green.— MARTHA CLARK ( wife of above), age about 35, short; dress, black dress and jacket, white boat- ing hat. Had with them a boy and 2 girls, ages 7, 5 and 2 years respectively. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Blatch, St. Albans. ISLE OF ELY. 32.— Ely ( County).— For stealing, 15th ult., a bicycle ( recovered)— THOMAS ANTHONY, age about 29, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair black, clean shaved, eyes dark ; dress, light grey coat and vest, dark grey trousers, dark soft felt hat. A footman; native of Shrewsbury. ( See Case No. 24, 14th inst.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Roythorne, Ely. ISLE OF WIGHT. 33. — Newport ( County). — FRANZ BRICHNER, Case No. 20,2nd November, 1900. Not to be arrested. Warrant cancelled. 34.— Newport ( County).— For obtaining lis. by false pretences, 19th inst., at Sandown— ALBERT STARK, alias JAMES MULLER, . to. ( see Case No. 16, 29th March, and No. 74, 7th inst.), age 40, height 5 ft. 5} in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) brown, eyes grey, abscess scar under left ear, wart uuder right ear, ruptured right side; wearing old dark clothes which are too small for him, white straw hat with black band, heavy lace boot6. He calls at schools, & c., and represents that he is desirous of sending two children to an English boarding school. A native of Alsace Lorraine. Warrant issued. Information to Supt, Hale, Newport. CUMBERLAND. £ 1 REWARD. 35.— Brampton ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Brampton Union — WILLIAM BENNETT, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 to 10 in., complexion sallow, hair auburn, eyes blue, slight blue mark supposed fair, hair brown, eyes blue, scar left cheek, large oval scar left forearm, burn mark back right hand. A native of London. Both are dragsmen and frequent horse sales, fairs, markets, & c. See Illustrated Circular, No. 49, January, 1897, Nos. 10 and 11. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Creasy, Romford; or Supt. Halsey, Latchingdon. 37-— Romford ( County).— For non- payment of £ 21 5s., maintenance arrears — GEORGE MAY, age 26 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved, over left eye ; wearing jacket suit, sometimes a lap coat, soft felt hat, of smart appearance. A shoemaker ; native of Hexham, Northumberland. Has worked at various towns in Northumberland, Yorkshire, Berwickshire, and Scotland. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. Birkett, clerk to the Brampton Urban District Council, to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension of Bennett. Information to Supt. Simon, Brampton. ESSEX. 36.— Romford ( County). — For conspiracy and obtaining £ 28, and various other sums, by horse dealing frauds, 25th April last, at South- minster— WILLIAM THOMPSON, age 45, height speaks quickly, of smart appearance ; dress, short cut jacket, breeches and gaiters, black hard felt hat, sometimes wears a straw hat. A horse- dealer ; native of Brentwood. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Creasy, Romford. KENT. 39.— Canterbury ( County).— For stealing, 17th inst., at Heme Bay, a cheque for £ 58, No. B 59476, on the London and County Bank, Herne Bay Branch, payable to A. L. Mickelin" written in ink, and " A. M O." worked in one corner ; 1 blank cheque on the Wilts and Dorset Banking Company, Limited, Southampton, No. E, 902908.
