Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. ' LTIONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less » • than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number. . as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to he inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the amwuncement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will he wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not lat- r than Saturday morning. Tfu r must be clearly written on one side of tlie paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. SPECIAL NOTICE. In certain cases questions have arisen as to the payment for photographs applied for by Police Forces under Home Office circular of 15th March, 1897. The Registrar of Habitual Criminals is therefore authorised by the Secretary of State to say that, in any ordinary case, a photograph is not necessary to enable his Department to identify a prisoner, the measurements and finger prints being sufficient for the purpose ; but if a photo- graph is applied for, or if, in any rare case, it should be required to complete the identification, the cost will ibe charged to the Police Force interested.
