All announcemchts for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communication* relating to them, should he addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerniiii/ persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTK, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken uvon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all casus where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Envy annouwement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of un officer not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to In inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed ly the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the rase may he. LXIO » T s. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of iuit lets rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars cowerning delinquents or stolen property to le inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion •) the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement ill he wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not Inter thin noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday mornin Th< y must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. MURDER. 6.— Chester { County). — For murder at Tabley, near Knutsford, 7th inst.— A MAN, age about 30, height ahout 5 ft. 8 in., broad shoulders, complexion sallow, large prominent eyes, may be wearing glasses ; wearing a three- quarter length greyish colour overcoat. 7. — Chester { County). — For obtaining money by forging cheques on the National Provincial Bank, Chester, between 3rd and 13th inst.— JAMES FERNEAUX DUFFIN, age 22, height 5 ft. 5£ in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, well educated, of smart appearance. Supposed a native of Dublin. Is a deserter from the Cheshire Regiment. He called upon firms, represented himself as Lieutehant Jackson of the Cheshire Regiment, and ordered goods to be forwarded to the depot, tendered cheques signed " R. J. Cooke" for mci « taut, the amount of purchase and received the balance. Has in his possession a cheque book on the National Provincial Bank, bearing the words " On His Majesty's Service" on face of cheques. May endeavour to leave the country. Information to the Chief Constable of Cheshire, Chester. 8 — Hazel Grove { County). — CLARA ATKINSON, Case No. 11, 15th ult., not now wanted. Warrant withdrawn. £ 2 REWARD. Middlewich { County).— For deserting his family— JOHN CROMPTON, age 52, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, pockmarked, hair and whiskers ( turning grey) dark brown, eyes grey; native of Middlewich. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Northwich Union to any person giving such information as will lead to the arrest of Crompton. Information to Supt. S. engraved thereon, 1 black cord jacket and vest, in pockets three carpenters dis- charge certificates iu the name of George Bernard Smith from the ships Angerton, Craigneuk, and Jeranos, a testimonial from David Burn, Blyth, and for obtaining food and lodgings by false pre- tences from 20th to 22nd inst.— A MAN, age about 22. height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair ( brushed over forehead) and slight moustache, light; spoke with southern dialect, bracelet tatooed on both wrists, J. R. or J. H. back of left hand ; dress, the stolen jacket and vest, light trousers, black tie, dark cap, strong lace boots with square toes ; stated he had obtained work in a timber yard. Creasy, Romford. 16.— Southend- on- Sea ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a " Singer" diamond frame Model Luxe bicycle, Dunlop tyres, Westwood rims, brake and mudguards, about 22 in. frame, Singer divided rubber pedals, recently enamelled and plated STOCKWELL, age 18, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, thin features, hair brown, eyes grey; dress, light overcoat, dark trousers and cap. Warrant issued. 17 — Southend- on- Sea ( County).— For stealing a bicycle, diamond frame, Acles fittings, opea head lugs, Wrampton twin roller chain, Westwood rims, Warwick covers back, Dunlop front wheel, wide flat handle bar, indented in centre, enamelled black — A. Warrant issued. 18.— Southend- on- Sea ( County).— For stealing, 21st inst., a black Russian gelding pony, aged, 13 hands, hog mane, three- quarter tail, patch of white on withers, has been clipped from trace line to knees and hocks ; a square- built governess car painted reddish- brown and varnished, brass cap missing from off- side wheel, ash shafts ; and a set of brass- mounted harness— Licence holder JAMES PARNELL, alias GAYTON, WOODS, BOND and DARNELL, Office No. 1818- 00, age 59, height 5ft 4 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, E. LANARKSHIRE. 26.— Glasgow ( City).— For stealing £ 39— ROBERT SMART, age 16 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark, eyes brown, walks erect; dress, dark blue serge suit, dark overcoat, black felt hat, lace boots; a native of Glasgow. Was accompanied by a man, age 20, and a youth age 16. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, Glasgow. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 21.— Cardiff ( Borough). — For uttering a forged cheque for £ 875 16s. 8d., 13th inst.— JOE MILLER, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion fair, long thin face, pointed nose and chin, hair and slight moustache light, nasal accent, of Jewish appearance; dress, dark cloth jacket suit, light soft felt hat with black band, dark blue tie with red figuring, brown boots. States he is a native of Odessa, Russia. He calls on stock- brokers, pays a covering sum for the purchase of shares, returns in a few days and orders the sale of same, receives cheque for the amount due, which he afterwards alters. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Car- diff. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 22.— Gloucester ( County).— For failing to report— Supervisee, WILLIAM SMITH, alias WILSON and YOUNG, Office No. 117- 01, age 38, height 5 ft. 10£ in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scars left of face, back of left hand, left forefinger, and over eyebrows. A horse dealer; native of Norwich. Sentenced at Here- ford Quarter Sessions. 16th October, 1899, to 18 months imprisonment and 7 years police supervision for horse stealing, liberated 15th January last. HEREFORDSHIRE. 23.— Bromyard ( County).— For stealing shoemakers' tools ( recovered)— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 3 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair dark brown, clean shaved ; dress, old dark suit, grey cap. A tramping shoemaker; supposed a native of South Wales. Is fond of singing at public houses. Information to Supt. Lewis, Bromyard. 24.— Ross ( County).— For stealing, 20th inst., at Little Birch, a gold signet ring ; 1 pearl and diamond do.; 1 gold buckle do.; 1 gold brooch, imitation swallow ; 1 gold coin pin, size of a three- penny piece; 1 lady's old silver demi- hunter watch. No. 63820 ; 1 lady's silver chain, small links ; 1 gold chain, pendant stone in gold frame attached ; 1 gold pin, with cross in pearls; 1 silver card case, initials " A. L. M. B." on outside, con- taining cards, " Mrs. H. Brinel Carver" and " Mr. H. Brinel Carver " thereon ; 1 blue enamel pin, with cross in pearls ; 1 Chicago gold medal, a Welsh harp thereon ; 1 ebony pen holder, gold mounted ; 1 cheque book on the National Pro- vincial Bank, Hereford Branch, " Annie Brinel Carver " on inside ; 1 dark grey overcoat; 1 fawn colour fancy vest; 1 pair light grey trousers; 1 pale green shirt, with narrow red and white stripes; 1 green bow tie; 1 pair black patent leather and kid lace boots — LEWIS LEWIS, alias LLEWELLYN and H. CARVER, age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 to 6 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, clean shaved, full eyes, hollow cheeks, thin face, tattooed on forearms and fingers, spoke with London accent; dress, brown and green jacket, brown or light cap, and supposed the stolen overcoat, vest, trousers, tie, and boots. Supposed a native of Bangor. Stated he was a barrister, an electrical engineer, and a nuisance inspector. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Ross. HERTFORDSHIRE. 25.— Watford ( County).— For larceny— CHARLES J. ROBERTS, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) brown, small lump on right cheek, blotches on chin; dress, black morning coat and vest, dark striped trousers, black tie, black felt hat, lace boots. LANCASHIRE. 27.— Liverpool ( City).— For an assault on a postman, 27th ult., and stealing a mail bag ( re- covered), containing letters & c.— A MAN, age about 30, height5 ft. 6 or 8 in., well built, complexion fair, hair light, moustache reddish; dress, blue serge jacket suit, sailor's knot striped tie, hard hat. Appearance of a clerk. A cheque which was in one of the stolen letters was subsequently presented for payment and signed " H. Williams." Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. LEICES TERSHIRE. 28.— Leicester ( Borough).— For stealing, 1 small lever watch, " Sharman, Melton," on movement; 1 old small silver verge watch j 1 long gold guard, trinkets at end; 1 old gold wedding ring, set 3 small stones; 1 do., set 4 stones; 1 lady's gold dress ring, set white stone— HARRY WOODS, age 17, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, slight moustache black, eyes dark ; dress, dark brown jacket suit. A baker. May endeavour to enlist. 29.— Leicester ( Borough).— For stealing a cheque for £ 15 10s.— JOSEPH HARRY JOHN- SON, age 31, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair dark, clean shaved, scar across nose ; dress, navy blue suit, dark overcoat with velvet collar, purple and white striped bow tie. A french polisher. May endeavour to leave the country. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leicester. LINCOLNSHIRE. 30. — Ep worth ( County). — For indecent assault— THOMAS SLINGSBY, age 73, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, hair turning grey, moustache ( cut short) grey, large projecting spot bottom of one eyelid, large broad thumbs; dress, old dark clothes, black hard hat, light lace boots. A cabinet maker; may be found at common lodging- houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wilkinson, Epworth. NORTHUMBERLAND. 31.— Tynemouth ( Borough).— For obtain- ing 2 sums of £ 10 by false pretences— GEORGE W. MACKERIL, alias THOMAS JOBSON, WILLIAM ANDREWS, CHARLES JEFFS, JOHN ROBERTS, and WHITEHOUSE, C. S. O. No. M. 9809, age 41, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes hazel, mole on left breast. See Case No. 9, 9th February, 1900, and Illustrated Circular, series 48, figure 2. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, North Shields. OXFORDSHIRE. 32.— Bicester ( County).— For obtaining, by false pretences, 11th inst., a lady's small silver watch— A MAN, who gave the name of SMITH, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., kair and moustache inclined to sandy, walks badly; wear- ing dark overcoat, black jacket, hard felt hat. A clock cleaner. He obtained the above watch by representing that he was in the employ of a local watchmaker. Supposed wanted elsewhere. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bowen, Bicester. Oxford { County). — For stealing, 14th inst., at Headlington, 2 livery coats ; 1 do. vest; 1 chocolate colour livery overcoat, silver plated buttons, crest " a spread eagle on coronet" ( re- covered) ; 1 black cloth overcoat; 1 blue serge jacket— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes grey ; dress, long dark cloth coat, 2 vests ( 1 black cloth, 1 fustian), cord trousers, grey cap, heavy lace boots, may be wearing a black hard hat. A rag and bone gatherer. Is identical with MAN, Case No. 3,19th inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Oxford- shire, Oxford. TUESDAY, APRIL 23, 1901. Temple Bar Branch, in July last— OSCAR LEUTPOLD, alias LEOPOLD OTTEN and ARTHUR CHARLES HENDER- SON, age about 36, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion fresh, small features, hair dress, blue serge suit, black overcoat, slate colour soft felt hat, lace boots. A clerk. Is fond of cycling. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. D.. 1493> 9- 13).- Portrait and description of WILHELM ADOLF MORLEY, alias HENRY WOLF, KARL HESRI WOLFF, and GUSTAV BARTCH, in custody at Vienna, for stealing 23rd February, 1901, £ 3000 worth of jewellery from 61, Porchester Terrace, Bayswater, W., age 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes brown, stiff build, scar left elbow, was brought up at Brighton Quarter Sessions, 2nd April, 1900, under the Prisons Act, and sentenced to a further term of 6 months imprisonment for stealing jewellery, & c. When in custody in England he has given his occupation as a cook and a waiter, and has always informed the Police and prison authorities that he is an Austrian, but it is believed that he is a German. His extradition has been demanded, but it cannot yet be granted, moles left wrist, left shoulder, right cheek, under right ear, under left ear, and 3 back of neck. He was convicted at North London Sessions, Cth December, 1898, of burglary, and sentenced to 15 months im- prisonment with hard labour, as Henry Wolf. On 13th February, 1899, he was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment ^ ith hard labour at Clerkenwell Police Court, for larceny of jewellery, < fec., as Karl Henri Wolff. While undergoing this sentence he as the question of his nationality has not yet been decided.
