THE POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1901. VOL. XVIII., No. 1790, BEOhUL 1. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken uvon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 15 « . per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed h'J the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the use may be. LTIOIVS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not lets rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact., referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written mi one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Xew Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be acceptel on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be giren on applicatwn. R. ANDERSON. Editor. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police the Photographs and descrip- tive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1.— B Division.— For embezzling £ 355— FREDERICK WILLIAM LEEKS, age about 45, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair, mous- tache and full pointed beard dark brown, eyes hazel, walks erect and quickly, speaks French fluently; dress, black or fawn colour overcoat, dark suit, black felt hat, lace boots, may be wear- ing a silk hat or P. & O. cap. A rate collector ; native of London. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. MURDER. 2.— H Division.— On Coroner's warrant for murder hy shooting— DIARDO FARINO, age 20, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion, hair and eyes dark ; dress, light clothes, black and white neckerchief, lace boots. A native of Amalfi per Scala, Italy— GAETANO CASTARA, age 25, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion, hair and eyes dark ; dress, dark clothes and cap. Italian ice cream vendors. 3.— H Division.— For manslaughter, 14th ult.— ISAAC LANDAU, a Pole, age 36, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair, whiskers, and moustache light, eyes blue, long thin nose ; dress, long black overcoat ( brown fur collar, fur lining to cuffs), dark trousers, black hard hat, lace boots. Warrant issued. 4.— H Division>— For obtaining goods by worthless cheques on the London and South Western Bank, Mile End branch — REUBEN COHEN, alias A. BERGER, age 35, height 5 ft. G in., slight build, complexion pale, thin face, hair and slight moustache light, eyes blue ; dress, black overcoat and trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. A native of Russia. Warrant issued. 5.— J Division.— For the abduction of a girl age 15— JAMES CllOCKBRAIN, age 17, height about 5 ft. 3 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair brown ; dress, brown coat and vest, lavender colour trousers, black hard felt hat. A native of London ; has been employed at coffee rooms. They may seek employment at restaurants as waiter and domestic servant respectively. Warrant issued. 6.— P Division• — For embezzlement — WILLIAM WOOD, age 22, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion swarthy, hair and slight moustache dark ; dress, black coat and vest, blue trousers with light stripes, green tie with yellow flowers, brown cap, heavy lace boots. A milk carrier; native of Essex. Warrant issued. 7.— T Division.— For stealing property described in Case No. 86, 15th inst. ( minx lined coat recovered) — FRANK BUTLER, alias THOMAS TOWELL, JAMES MILLER, and FRANCIS A. REYNOR, Office No. 369- 01; age 28, height 5 ft. 8f in., complexion dark, hair black or dark brown, small dark moustache, long face, burn scar left breast, right index finger has been crushed, scar right wrist and forearm, blue ring left index finger, varicose veins left leg, scar upper part right leg ; dress, dark tweed jacket suit, grey frieze overcoat, grey Alpine hat or spotted cap, or may dress in uniform of 5th Royal Irish Lancers, and produce what purports to be a Victoria Cross with " Private Regan, 2nd Derbyshire Regiment," thereon. A native of Staffordshire. This man enters barracks, represents he is an officer's servant, and that his master will arrive shortly, and when an opportunity offers breaks into the officers' quarters. A YRSHIRE. 8.— Saltcoats { County).— For stealing a silver lever watch, No. 13716, silver dial, steel Albert with a threepenny piece and watch key attached— WILLIAM McGEE, age 27, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache light brown, eyes blue, left hand deficient, wound mark on left leg ; dress, brown tweed jacket and vest, light grey striped tweed trousers, red silk muffler, grey tweed single peak cap, light shoes. A labourer ; native of Paisley. Has been em- ployed as a cloth hawker at Cornwall, Hull, and Manchester. Has served in the Army. Previously convicted at Glasgow, Paisley, and Johnstone. BERKSHIRE. d.— Faringdon ( County).— For obtaining food, lodgings, and two imitation silver watches ( one a key winder, open face, glass missing; other a keyless out of repair) by false pretences — CHARLES SMITH, alias C. H. HILL, age about 45, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair, moustache and side whiskers turning grey; dress, dark overcoat, brown jacket and vest, brown mixture trousers, khaki colour tie with blue spots, bowler hat ; carried an umbrella and black bag. ( See Case No. 75, 15th inst.). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Butcher, Faringdon. 10.— Maidenhead ( County).— For stealing, 18th ult., a pneumatic road racer bicycle, transfer " Collins, Maker, Great Marlow," Warwick tyres, dropped handle bars, Tom Thumb lamp, plated pump— E. WHITE, age about 20, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair brown, of good address; wearing black mackintosh and hard felt hat. Warrant issued. BER WICKS HIRE. 11.— Duns { County).— For stealing ( bailee), 11th or 12th December last, at Eyemouth, a gold three- quarter plate lever watch, No. 81888, white dial, black chapters, gold hands, stop centre seconds hand, maker Russell, Liverpool and London— JAMES CAMPBELL, age 31, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, oval face, hair black, slight moustache and eyes dark, anchor, S. A. and J. O. tattooed on right arm, anchor left arm ; dress, brown tweed jacket suit with greenish shade, brown cap, light lace boots. A tramping watch- maker : native of Glasgow. May be found work- ing as a labourer. Was accompanied by a woman, age 30. Warrant issued. 12.— Duns { County).— For obtaining by false pretences a fusee silver English lever watch, No. 26,300, oversprung; 1,9 ct. gold A1 bert, curb pattern; 1 topaz gold pendant; £ 10 in single notes ; and for stealing £ 2 in single notes— GEORGE GALL or GAULD ( see portrait and description. Case 34, 28th December last); dress, dark blue or black jacket and vest, grey tweed trousers, tweed peak cap, short black leggings, tan cycling shoes. May obtain employment at farms or public works. Traced to his possession a pneumatic safety bicycle, frame green enamelled, gold lines, 28 in. wheels, tangent spokes, Perry's free wheel clutch, Coventry duplex twin roller chain, rat- trap pedals, drooped handle bars, cork handles with black tips, Mayfair toolbag, and bell attached, transfer on head " The Champion, T. " Vedette" in metal, " Sibley, Agent, Chesham," painted on frame and mudguard — A MAN, age about 26, height about 5 ft, 10 in., complexion fair, white face, hair and slight mous- tache light brown ; dress, dark blue suit, dark grey overcoat with velvet collar, white silk tie, black hard felt hat. CHESHIRE. 14. — Runcorn { County). — For stealing 3s. 6d. from a child in the street— A MAN, age 25 or 26, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair and moustache, dark ; dress, black overcoat and cap, short black trousers, lace boots. DERBYSHIRE. 15.— Alfreton { County).— For stealing, 14th inst., at Pilsley, a watch and guard ( recovered)— FRED NELSON, alias EDWARD RHODES and GEORGE THOMPSON, age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache dark brown, cross flags and " Hands across the Sea" tattooed on left forearm, tattoo marks on right forearm, rather flat nose ; dress, black coat, light check vest and trousers, brown muffler, dark cap, light lace boots. Eyre, Alfreton. 16.— Chesterfield { Borough).— For steal- ing 6 watches and 4 rings ( recovered)— DAVID JAMES GLENDINNING, alias JOHNSON and JAMIESON, age 30, height about 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion fresh, hair and slight moustache light, eyes light grey, scar back left elbow, web of left thumb, both forefingers, back of right hand, above nasal arch, left little finger deformed, right little finger crooked, hair on right side of chest, asser- tive manner; dress, black coat and vest, grey trousers, black billycock hat. Brown, Poole. 20.— Weymouth { Borough).— For obtaining £ 8 10s. by a worthless cheque, 31st ult., FRED- ERICK PENNY, alias GRANT, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( slightly bald on top) dark, clean shaved ; dress, dark three- quarter length or greenish frieze over- coat, light jacket, dark trousers, dark tie with white spots, dark blue muffler with white spots, grey soft felt hat. Supposed a conjurer.— FLORENCE PENNY, alias GRANT, age about 40, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., hair dark, eczema on face; dress, black dress, black figured blouse, dark grey cloak with high collar, or dark cape, green felt hat with black trimming, very thick dark brown veil. They take lodgings at first- class boarding houses, obtain goods and clothing of tradesmen, and decamp. Previously convicted at Yarmouth. Had in their possession a new brownish mixture tweed ulster, a new rever- sible travelling rug, green ground, blue one side, yellow check the other ; 4 framed sketches ( including one " Rough Sea at Portland ") and 12 unframed sketches (" Porteshead and Bristol," " Waiting for the Tide," " Old Mill on the Danube," Poole Harbour," " Inveran," " Holder- ness, Bournemouth," " Weymouth Bay, Sandsfort Castle," " Studland from Cliff, Bournemouth," " Holderness Road, Bournemouth," " Scaurie Harbour," " Corn Field," " Small Sunset"). DURHAM. 21.— Consett { County).— For embezzling £ 43 16s. 10d.— WILLIAM FRENCH, age 40, height 5 ft. 6$ or 7^ in., complexion sallow, hair black, eyes dark brown, slightly bow- legged, turns his toes inwards and swings his arms when walk- ing, recent scars on bridge of nose and right cheek bone, harsh voice. A clerk or cashier; native of Annfield Plain. Absconded 15th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Benzies, Consett. 22.— Durham { City).— For obtaining money by false pretences between 26th ult. and 11th inst. — WILLIAM BELTON, age about 40, height 5 ft. 10 er 11 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, whiskers ( cropped and pointed) and moustache reddish brown, rather lame, addicted to drink ; dress, navy blue square cut jacket suit, dark melton overcoat with velvet collar, dark tie, black felt hat, boots out across tops. He takes lodgings, obtains permission of hotel keepers to allow the Belton Wrtting Portfolio to be put in their rooms, afterwards calls on tradesmen to have their ad- vertisements inserted in the portfolio, for which he charges 21s., giving a receipt with heading W. Belton, Publisher, 5, Studley Road, Clapham, London, S. W., printed thereon. Was accompanied by a woman, age about 28, height 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel; dress, black skirt, red blouse, black jacket small pearl buttons, dark felt hat with black and white wing, high lace boots, wore a brilliant brooch, carried a black silk umbrella with silver cross head. ESSEX. 2' i. — Witharn { County). — For stealing a " Star" pneumatic safety bicycle, black Dunlop tyre back wheel, white on front ( both new), rubber pedals, straight handle bar, cork handles with black tips, star on head and mudguard— THOMAS STANLEY DARE, age 19, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, fringe on forehead, eyes dark, receding forehead ; dress, black jacket, light trousers, black tie, white front ( supposed marked " II. Chapman"), greenish plaid cap, cut at side, luce boots. A native of Upper Norwood. May , endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. ' m- Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 24.— Staple Hill { County).— For absconding from Kingswood Reformatory, 2nd October last— STEPHEN WILCOX, age 14, height 4 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes grey. A native of Frampton- Cotterell, Gloucester. — EDWARD BUXTON, age 15, height 4 ft. in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes blue. A native of St. Mark's, Bristol. Both wearing cord clothing. May seek employment on public works or at a colliery. A reward of £ 2 10s. will be paid by Mr. George Whitwill, Superintendent of Kingswood Re- formatory, for such information as will lead to the arrest of either of the above. Information to Supt. HA DOING TONSHIRE. 25.— Haddington { County).— For stealing £ 6 7s. 9d., 15th inst.— JAMES DARLING, alias SCOTT, age 22, height 5 ft. 6 in., full face, hair dark brown, eyes grey, several upper teeth miss- ing, flat- footed, R. D. and anchor left forearm, J. D. right forearm ; dress, dark tweed jacket and vest, dark striped moleskin trousers, cord peak cap, strong boots. A labourer or navvy. — HAROLD LLOYD, age 14, height 4 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown ; dress, dark tweed jacket with red check, grey tweed vest, red jersey, dark striped moleskin trousers, leather leggings, strong boots. L." engraved thereon, and small gold locket with monogram " H. M." thereon attached ; 1 blue cloth Melton overcoat, single- breasted, usual pockets, blue and white lining, velvet collar, maker supposed " Bartels" on tab, " H. Mackay" in ink under tab— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 or il in., square shoulders, complexion rather sallow, hair and slight moustache brown, of military appearance ; dress, short dark jacket, light trousers, dark cap, blue Melton overcoat, velvet collar, and a gold curb pattern chain. Has been employed as a labourer; sometimes works as a painter. Stays at common lodging houses. Information to Supt. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 30.— Newport ( Borough).— For stealing, 10th ult., a vest and a pair of trousers and a silver Geneva watch— WILLIAM COX, alias ANDER- SON, Office No. 2709- 97, age 60, height 5 ft. ljin., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, ship front left forearm, bracelet left wrist, cut scar and ship front right forearm, anchor between cross flags back of right hand. A seaman; native of hair dark, moustache dark brown, false teeth in upper jaw, splay footed, frequents billiard rooms and associates with betting men. A solicitor ; native of Yorkshire. Warrant issued. Information to Major Teevan, Chief Constable, Hove. Oxford. ' 1 his man takes lodgings, states he is a ship's officer, and that he is to be paid off the following day. Sentenced at South London Sessions, 10th March, 1896, to 18 months imprison- ment for larceny. Previously convicted at London and Glasgow. See Case No. 25, 8th inst. Warrant issued.
