R E G U X i All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should he addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will he inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be tahen uvon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and, the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 15i. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less ranlt than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required, to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed hy the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. LTIONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given jm application. R. ANDERSON, Editor. T H E E D I T O R requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police the Photographs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1.— A Division.— For larceny, SIDNEY BISHOP, age 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, clean shaved, impediment in speech, has a nervous twitching of the eyes when talking ; dress, grey overcoat, dark coat and vest, brown Alpine hat. A jeweller's counterman ; native of London. Warrant issued. 2.— B Division.— For stealing, 17th ult., a mahogany box, 9 in. by 6 in., containing a Post Office Savings Bank book, No. 9136M, in name of Grace Albury, and a number of letters and telegrams— NORAH CAMPBELL, age 43, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, eyes hazel ; dress, black skirt and jacket, black straw sailor hat, black veil. She takes lodgings, representing that she is a hospital nurse : a native of Hertfordshire. Is identical with MABEL WILBERFORCE, alias RACHAEL SMITH, Office No. 563 M. 3.— M Division.— For obtaining £ 100 by false pretences— WILLIAM JOHN DRAYCOTT, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes grey, usually clean shaved ; dress, dark grey suit, black soft felt hat. He opened an estate agent's office, and induced a person to accept the position of manager, from whom he obtained the above amount as a deposit. Warrant issued. 4.— N Division.— For embezzling £ 2 18s., 5th December last— WILLIAM STARRIE, alias WILLIAMS, age 27 ( looks older), height 5 ft., complexion and hair dark, eyes brown, of Jewish appearance; dress, black overcoat, dark suit, black soft felt hat. A native of Kingsland, London. Has been employed as a collector to a window cleaning company. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BERKSHIRE. 5.— Maidenhead ( County).— For stealing, 18th ult., a pneumatic road racer bicycle, transfer " Collins, Maker, Great Marlow," Warwick tyres, dropped handle bars, Tom Thumb lamp, plated pump— E. WHITE, age about 20, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair brown, of good address; wearing black mackintosh and hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Dorrell, Maidenhead. 6. — Reading ( Borough). — For larceny, 19th ult. WILLIS, alias SCAN WILLIS, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, peculiarity in one eye ; dress, dark shabby clothes and cap, wearing neckerchief. Is well known in the West of England.— ALBERT HIBBS, age about 28, height 5 ft. 11 in., slight build, hair dark brown, clean shaved; dress, brown double- breasted jacket and vest, dark trousers, brown cap, dark neckerchief. Beaconsfield ( County).— For embezzlement at Chalfont St. Peter's— GEORGE RANSOM, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair, moustache, and small side whiskers sandy. A journeyman butchei ; supposed a native of Sittingbourne, Kent. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Pearman, Beaconsfield. 8.— Marlow ( County).— For stealing 11th ult., a pair of coachman's livery boots, size 8, plain black leather, white webbing tabs, hand sewn, button straps. — EDWARD HARDING, age 20 to 22, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, face and large red nose blotchy, hair brown, eyes blue, scars on arms and legs ; dress, grey tweed stable suit and cap. Terry, Braintree. 16.— Chelmsf ord( County).— For burglary, I 12th ult., and stealing an old double- case silver Geneva hunter watch, No. 25982, maker ( supposed) Loveday, Chelmsford, imitation gold chain and guinea; 1 briar pipe, short straight stem, black mouthpiece, silver band ; 1 meerschaum cigar holder, imitation Turk's head, in black case, mouthpiece deficient; 1 gardener's buck- horn handle knife, " Long" on blade ; 1 dark drab cap, lining yellow— SAMUEL GLEDHILL, age 20, height 5 ft. 3J in., complexion fresh, thin pale face, hair ( inclined to curl) light brown, eyes blue, | QVR 97, 10 blue dots and cross left forearm, 3 on right arm, cut scar near left eye ; dress, short dark mixture jacket, old light cloth trousers, ragged at bottoms, old boots, and the stolen cap, which is too large ; a native of Leeds. Previously convicted at Leeds, Oldham, Hastings, Staines, and Middlesbrough. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 17.— Southend- on- Sea ( County).— For stealing, 12'. h ult., at Roehford, a diamond frame pneumatic safety bicycle, black enamelled nickelplated handle bars, brake, spokes, and cranks, silver heart- shape plate on head, " The Arsenal, St. Albans, Herts.," thereon, 28 by If in. wheels, Dunlop tyre covers, Brooks's patent saddle, no mudguards— A MAN, age about 22, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, slight moustache light, rather long nose; dress, black jacket and vest, dark grey trousers, black hard felt hat, appearance of a clerk. HEREFORDSHIRE. 18.— Ross ( County).— For wilful damage and stealing, 28th ult., at Tretire, 2 silver Wyandotte pullets, 1 Plymouth Rock hen, 1 do. cockerel— BYRON JOHNS, age about 25, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, slight moustache dark; dress, grey coat, brown vest, cord trousers, cap. A gipsy ; native of Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. Had with him a mule and cart, and was accompanied by his wife and child. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Ross. Sentenced at Carnarvon Quarter Sessions, 20th October, 1898. to 3, 3, and 3 years penal servitude ( concurrent), for obtaining money by false pretences ( 3 charges). Released from H. M. Convict Prison, Parkhurst, 19th ult. Y 360. Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. 22.— Salford ( Borough). — For failing to report— Licence- holder JOHN WHELAN, Office No. 47,361, age 56, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown ( turning grey), eyes grey, blue scar bridge of nose and on left eyebrow, scar back of neck, left elbow been damaged and slightly deformed, left hand and fingers contracted. Sentenced at Manchester Assizes, 31st October, 1879, to penal servitude for life for murder. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 25.— Newport ( Borough).— For stealing, 10th ult., a vest and a pair of trousers, blue square plaid with green stripes ; and on 16th ult., a silver Geneva watch, '* Yhnill" engraved on inside case — A MAN, who gave the name of WILLIAM COX and ANDERSON, age 50 to 55, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair brown, heavy grey moustache and eyebrows, bracelet tattooed on one wrist; dress, brown plaid suit, thick double- breasted overcoat, velvet collar, black bowler hat, lace boots. He takes lodgings, stating he is a ship's officer, and that he is to be paid off the following day. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Newport. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 26.— Wellingborough ( County). — For stealing lead ( recovered)— HENRY JAMES BEDFORD, age 33, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, eyes grey, scar on right cheek, leopard, soldier, 3 swords, 3 females, butterfly, Faith, Hope, and Charity, and Ally Sloper tattooed on right forearm, snake, jockey, female, palm tree with snake on left forearm; di • ess, black coat, brown jacket and vest, moleskin trousers, muffler, brown cap, old army boots. A labourer ; native of Northampton. Warrant issued. Information to Supt, Alexander, Wellingborough. 27.— Northampton ( Borough).— For failing to report— Supervisee CHARLES KNIGHT, alias BURDEN, BARKER, and CROSS, Office No. 17- 01, age 29, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, anchor back right hand, large burn scar on each hip, hernia right side. Sentenced at Northampton, 6th April, 1900, to 3 months imprisonment and 18 months police supervision for larceny. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Northampton. PEMBROKESHIRE. 28. — Haverfordwest ( County). — For embezzlement— GEORGE TRAVERS, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( cut short) and moustache light brown, eyes ( supposed) blue ; dress, shabby brown suit, black bowler hat. A grocer's porter ; native of Isleworth, London. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable of Pembrokeshire, Haverfordwest. ROXBURGHSHIRE. 29.— Jedburgh ( County).— For embezzling £ 35 13s. Id., the monies of the Ancient Order of Foresters, of which he was treasurer— EBENEZER ROBERTSON, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( rather wavy) auburn, moustache reddish, inclined to be corpulent; dress, slate colour jacket suit, black hard felt hat, or black corded tail coat, light striped trousers, sometimes wears a drab colour half length overcoat. A hairdresser; native of Dunfermline. May endeavour to emigrate. Absconded 21st ult. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Porter, Jedburgh. SOMERSETSHIRE. 30.— Bath ( City).— for embezzlement, 20th October last— JOHN MACEY, age 18, height 5 ft. 6 in., inclined to be stout, complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown. A milk carrier. May endeavour to enlist. Warrant issued. 31 .- Bath ( City).— For stealing £ 20, lPth December last— GEORGE DAVIES, age 32 ( looks older), height 5 ft, 4 in., complexion pale, hair black, eyes brown ; dress, black overcoat, dark trousers, black soft felt hat. STAFFORDSHIRE. 32.— Burslem ( County).— For withholding £ 50 7s. 4d., the monies of a Friendly Society of which he was treasurer— GEORGE WILSON, age 48, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, round face, hair ( turning grey), moustache and eyes dark ; dress, black vicuna overcoat, grey jacket and vest, brown mixture trousers, black and red flowered muffler, black hat, light lace boots. HAMPSHIRE. 36.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing a considerable sum of money— ALBERT EYRE, age 45, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, moustache and imperial dark, eyes grey; dress, black overcoat, dark suit, grey cap. Is a colour- sergeant of 1st Battalion Royal Rifles Reserve Regiment, from which he is a deserter. May endeavour to leave the country. He left Portsmouth, 8th ult., accompanied by A WOMAN, age 23 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion sallow, hair ( short) dyed auburn colour. 1 front upper tooth deficient; dress, black skirt and cape, round sealskin hat. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 37.— Abergavenny ( County).— For embezzling £ 83 — ALEXANDER SEYMOUR HOLMES, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion pale, long thin features, prominent nose, hair light brown, clean shaved, of smart appearance ; dress, dark jacket and vest, light tweed breeches, brown leather leggings" and boots, light colour Newmarket mackintosh, black hard hat. A bank clerk; native of Cinderford, Gloucester. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Davies, Abergavenny. SUSSEX ( East). 38.— Hove ( Borough).— For embezzlement— CHARLES WILLIAMS, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( thin on top) dark brown, moustache brown, small powder mark under left eye, short thick hands ; dress, fawn colour dust coat, grey trousers and vest, black hard hat, sometimes wears a soft Alpine hat, lace boots. WO ROES TERSHIRE. 39.— Kings Heath ( County).— For embezzling £ 20 19s. 4d. — WILLIAM HENRY CANNING, age 32, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark, eyes brown ; dress, light dust coat, light trousers, black hard hat, brown boots.
