SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police the Photographs and descrip- tive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1 Criminal Investigation De- partmentm — For obtaining money by false pretences— MAX ALBERT DES ARCIS, alias D'ARCY, AUGUSTUS VICTOR DELMAS, VILLIERS, DE VASCONCELLOS, & c., supposed a French Canadian, age 50, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, complexion fresh, oval face, thin pointed chin, hair ( thin on top) turning grey, eyes steel blue, stoops slightly, walks slowly, rather flat- footed, can speak French, German, and English fluently, carries an umbrella and firearms. He represents himself to be a civil engineer and a B. A. He makes the acquaintance of females by advertisement, & c., and after ascertaining that they have means, proposes marriage, and thea obtains sums of money from them under the pretence that he will invest it to their interest. See Case No. 3, 21st May, 1897. Warrant issued. 2.— Y Division.— For stealing, 15th inst., a bay mare, 11 hands, rough coat, white scar inside off hind leg, short tail, forelock cut off ; a set of brass mounted hainess ; a light trap, rubber tyres, body painted black, wheels and shafts picked out black and yellow, iron foot rest, indiarubber mat, brown cushion, and whip— TWO MEN, 1st, age about 20, height 5 ft. 0 in.; wearing a light suit and cap. 2nd, age about 2C, height 5 ft. 0 in.; dress, light suit, brown overcoat. Information to be forwarded to the Metropoli- tan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 3.— For stealing a cheque for £ 1871 7s. Id.— ANSELMO DA COSTA RICCI, late of Leam- ington Road Villas, West'iourne Park, age 59 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, complexion sallow, hair and small moustache black, large eyes, wears glasses, nervous manner when speaking. BEDFORDSHIRE. i.— Sharnbrook ( County).— For stealing, 17th inst., a mare ( recovered)— HENRY SLATER, alias SUMMERLIN, age 20, height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, bust of female, heart, arrow, and LOVE front of right forearm, LOVE front of left wrist; dress, dark serge suit, dark soft felt hat with narrow brim, clogs; may be wearing a dark cap. A native of Felmersham. He was discharged from Nor- thampton Prison, 17th inst., after serving 4 months imprisonment for fraudulent enlistment. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Nottingham, Sharn- brook. 5 — Bedford ( Borough).— For stealing, 23rd ult., a horse and cart, and a quantity of drapery ( recovered)— ARTHUR ALLEN, alias FOSTER, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., square build, complexion fair, long face, pointed chin, square wide forehead, slight moustache light, 2 scars top of head ; dress, navy blue jacket, dark trousers, fancy vest, check cap, lace boots. Has served in the Army. Stays at common lodging- houses. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Thody, Bedford. BERKSHIRE. I).— Maidenhead ( County).— For stealing, 29th ult., a " Wizard" bicycle, 20 in. frame, Clincher tyres, mudguards, slightly raised handle bars," Wizard " on front down tube, Smith & Co., King Street, Maidenhead," on back down tube, " Alldays" stamped on brake shoe— HERBERT GILL, age about 26, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., com- plexion fresh, rather long moustache light, wearing a tweed suit. A native of Springates, near Brad ford, Yorks. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Dorrell, Maidenhead. 7.- Walling ford ( County).— For stealing 2 heifers at Didcot, 22nd ult., and a cow at Abing- don, 5th inst. ( recovered)— FRANK LYFORD, age 23, height abont 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes grey ; dress, dark blue serge jacket, dark trousers, dark cap, brown boots blacked over. Has served in the Navy.— JOSEPH LYFORD, age 10, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., hair brown ; dress, dark clothes and cap, lace boots. Natives of Didcot. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Holding, Abingdon. 8.— Wokingham ( County).— For leaving their wives and families chargeable to the Wok- ingham Union— ALBERT BARNS, age 30, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown ( clean shaved), eyes blue ( lost sight of right), right second finger injured ; dress, dark pilot jacket, moleskin vest and trousers, dark peak cap, heavy boots. A navvy ; native of Easthampstead ; may be found on public works.— HENRY GILES, age about 40, height 5 ft. 1 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, may be wear- ing whiskers and moustache; dress, usually pilot coat, cord trousers and vest, soft billycock hat. A native of Hurst; mav be found at public works or on a farm. — WILLIAM CHARLES LEWINGDON, age 34, height 5 ft. 0J in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, eyes light grey, right arm tattooed. Late of Shinficld; is a reservist of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. Warrants issued. A reward of £ 1 will be paid by the Guardians of the Wokingham Union for such information as will lead to the arrest, and alBo £ 1 for the arrest, in each case. Information to Supt. Oth inst., on a charge of forgery— JAMES MATHER, age 20. height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, thin oval face, hair brown, eyes blue, mole on muscle of left arm. Is a good musician, and pianoforte tuner ; may seek employment at music halls or theatres. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Henderson, Chief Con- stable, Reading. BUCKiNGHAMSHIRE. 1( 1.— Slough ( County). — For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the Eton Union - HARRY WILLIAM COX, age about 40, height about ti ft., slight build, complexion pale, small features, hair, whiskers and moustache light brown, wears glasses, walks erect; sometimes wears a dark cycling suit. An accountant. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Sutton, Slough. 11 — High Wycombe ( Borough). — For larceny from the dressing room of a football club, on 17th inst.- A MAN, age 20 to 22, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., rather slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark, clean shaved, eyes hazel ; dress, blue serge suit, dark cap and muffler, lace boots with broad toes. He gave the names of BARNES and WHITE, and stated he was a professional football player, also that he had recently been discharged from the Berkshire Militia. Warrant issued. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 12.- Cambridge ( Borough).— For failing to report— Licence- holder JOSEPH MOLE, Office No. 1775- 99, age 50, height 5 ft. 7J in., complexion sallow, hair grey, eyes blue ( blind right), scar right eyebrow and centre of forehead, moles between shoulder blades. Sentenced at Chesterton Assizes, 13th January, 1894, to 7 years penal servitude for arson. Licenced 13th June, 1899. IT. 13. 13.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For obtain- ing money by worthless cheques 3 charges)— P. WYATT, age 50 to 55, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., very corpulent, weighs 16 or 17 stones, hair grey, cast in right eye ; dress, dark jacket suit and overcoat, brown boots, black fiat top felt hat or black and white check cap— 0. WYATT, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, com- plexion dark, hair and moustache dark brown, undershot jaw, teeth very prominent. Roman nose; dress, dark suit, brown overcoat with velvet collar, black felt hat or brown and white plaid cap, both wear a massive gold watch chain and gold watch. They represented themselves as dealers in antique furniture, and visited public houses where they obtain the confidence of the landlords, and on the 10th secured cash to the amount of £ 16 15s. and left, shewing, as their excuse for leaving, a telegram requesting them to return to London at once to attend a large auction sale of antiquities. Two of the cheques are on the London and County Bank ( Newington Branch), signed " J. H. Hatton," payable to " P. Wyatt, Esquire," and the other on the Bank of New South Wales ( Charters Towers, London Agents). Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Holland, Cam- bridge. CHESHIRE. 11.— Liscard( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a piano ( recovered)— MRS. MAUNDERS, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) light brown ; dress, black three- quarter close- fitting jacket, black dress and sailor hat. Warrant issued. 15.— Liscard ( County). - - For larcenv — RICHARD WILLIAM LEWIS, age 24 or' 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache light brown, eyes grey, two fingers of one hand missing at 2nd joint; dress, black overcoat, jacket, and double- breasted vest, dark grey trousers, blue and white striped front, black and white scarf. A native of Manchester. Warrant issued. Information to Supl. McDonald, Liscard. 16.— Middlewich (. County).— For larceny — JOSEPH MOORE, age 24, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, cut mark left wrist; dress, dark jackct and vest, brown cord trousers, peak cap. A native of North- wich. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Large, Middlewich. DENBIGHSHIRE. 17.— Denbigh ( County). — For cruelty to children at Ruthin— JOHN JONES, alias RUTH, age about 47, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, hair and moustache ( turning grey) brown : dress, grey coat and vest, moleskin trousers, white slop. A plasterer. " Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Denbigh. 18.— Wrexham ( County).— For larceny ( bailee) — JOHN KENNEALLY, age about 36, height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair light brown, eyes brown. A draper's traveller; native of Cork. Has served in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and is iu possession of an India medal with Burmab clasp, 1885- 7. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Jones, Wrexham. DEVONSHIRE. V).— Exeter ( County). — For larceny and failing to report— Licence- holder HENRY LEE, alias THOMAS LEWIS, and GEORGE PEARCE, Office No. 2588- 00, age 67, height 5 ft. 1 in., com- plexion sallow, hair grey ( bald , eyes grey, ruptured right side, scars right side neck, left thumb, and right forefinger. A watchmaker; native of Shepton Mallett. Sentenced at Gloucester Assizes, 12th February, 1895, to 5 years penal servitude for larceny. Liberated 26th September last, on 2nd licence, which expires 17th January next. V. 27. Information to the Chief Constable, County Police, Exeter. 20.— Devonport ( Borough).— For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the Devon- port Union— SAMUEL LOVIS WILLIAMS, age 44, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., stout build, complexion fair, hair turning grey) dark brown, side whiskers. A labourer ; native of Newton Abbott. Absconded in August, 1899. Photograph may be seen on application. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Matters, Devon- port. DURHAM. 21.— Durham ( City).— For embezzling £ 6, 6th ult.— EDGAR VICTOR BLONDEAU, age about 28, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curl black, clean shaved or slight dark moustache, eyes grey ; dress, black jacket and vest, dark trousers, polo collar, narrow black tie, black felt hat. A native of Paris; speaks good English and Italian. A sewing- machine salesman. Absconded 6th ult. Had with him a black retriever dog. Stated he was going to London. Warrant iBSued. Information to Chief Constable Smith, City Police, Durham. ESSEX. 22.— Colchester ( County).— For obtaining £ 5 13s. 54d. and a quantity of meat by a worth- less cheque, at Clacton- on- Sea— J. WYATT, age about 55, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark, turning grey, wears glasses when reading; dress, grey and black mixture suit, black overcoat, brown boots, hard felt hat, sometimes wears a check cap, carried a brown leather portmanteau.— PERCY age 36, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, com- plexion sallow, hair and moustache dark, receding chin ; dress, black diagonal suit, black felt hat, Hope, London," inside, brown boots, sometimes wears a brown overcoat with grey plaid lining, carried a brown portmanteau. Is well known at race meetings. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ackers, Colchester, or to Inspector Lennon, Clacton- on- Sea. 23.— Grays ( County).— For embezzling £ 3 13s. 4d.— EDWARD FLEMING HILLS, late an assistant overseer, age about 23, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion ruddy, hair ( curly on forehead) and slight moustache dark ; dress, usually black or blue serge suit, black felt hat with broad brim, long rough overcoat. A painter ; native of Little Thurrock. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Grays. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 24.- Pontypridd ( County).— For larceny- Supervisee JOSEPH SAMUEL BROOKS, alias GEORGE HUNT, Office No. 2923- 99, age 21, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes hazel, hairy mole right cheek, mole right side and back of neck, boil scars on back of neck and shoulders. Sentenced at Gloucester Quarter Sessions, 28th June, 1899, to 3 months imprison- | ment and 2 years Police supervision for larceny. Other convictions for shopbreaking, sacrilege, and burglary. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. i'l— Bristol ( City).— For stealing £ 500— ROBERT FIELD, age 40 to 45 ( looks older), height about 5 ft. 7 in., inclined to stoop, com- plexion sallow, thin face, rather prominent jaws, hair ( turning grey) black, thin on temples, clean shaved, may be growing a beard and moustache, slouching gait, usually dressed in dark clothes. Of horsey appearance. A bank manager. Warrant issued. 26. Bristol( City)— For stealing £ 19 17s. 5d. — ERNEST CHARLES MOHUN, age 39, height^, 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, hair, moustach , and pointed beard dark ; dress, blue serge lounge suit, dark grey three- quarter overcoat, silk facings, black bowler hat. A commission agent; native of Ipswich. Is well known at Southampton, Cardiff, Bath, and London. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 27 Bournemouth ( County).— For ob- taining several dresses and other articles by false pretences, 4th ult.— MRS. J. BLOTT, age 32 to 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, with fringe, eyes supposed grey, well educated. She left here about the end of October, accompanied by A MAN, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair light, thick bushy moustache ; dress, blue serge suit, black bowler hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Bournemouth. 28.— Fareham ( County).— For housebreak- ing, 21st ult., at Bedhampton— A MAN, age about 21, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair and slight side whiskers black, deep cut scar on one thumb; dress, old black jacket, light trousers, light skull cap, lace boots. Hack, Fareham. 29.— Gosport ( County).— For stealing, be- tween 19th and 31st ult., at the Rifle Barracks, 1 silver pap boat; 1 naval medal; 1 grand cross of Charles III. of Spain ( recovered)— GEORGE TIVNER ( supposed false), age about 30, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair and mous- tache brown : dress, light brown suit and cap. Information to Supt. Silver, Gosport. 30— Portsmouth ( Borough). For steal- ing, 9th inst., £ 85, including 13 Bank of England notes, Portsmouth branch, Nos. 34581 to 34593, dated 21st October. 1899— FREDERICK AUGUS- TUS, alias CLAUDE HAMILTON, age 35, height 5 ft. 4^ in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) and eyes brown, rose tattooed on right fore- arm ; dress, light dust coat, dark trousers, black and white check cap. A colour- sergeant of the 2nd Battalion Royal Southern Reserve Regiment, from which he is now a deserter. Absconded 9th inst. with his son, age 8 or 9. May endeavour to leave the country. HERTFORDSHIRE. 31.— Ware ( County). — For obtaining monev by false pretences — JAMES MORRIS, alias JAMES THOMPSON, age 48, height 5 ft. 3J in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top), moustache and side whiskers sandy, eyes blue, scar back of left hand and centre of forehead, birthmark back of neck, mole on chest, hairy mole on breast; dress, dark clotheB, hard felt hat. He collects alms by means of a book, which purports to bear the names of the principal residents of the neighbourhood. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Duke, Ware. KENT. 32.— Sandgate ( County).— For forging and uttering a cheque for £ 12 10s. 0d.— GEORGE SYLVESTER, age 35, height 5 ft. 8J in., com- plexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes ( sunken) hazel, small scar left cheek, hook nose, forehead and chin prominent, slightly bow- legged, walks badly ; dress, dark square- cut suit, brown New- market coat, sk nil cap. A native of Gainsborough, Lincoln. Is a deserter from the 7th Dragoon Guards. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hollands, Sandgate. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1900. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 33.— V Division.— For forging and utter- ing a Post Office withdrawal notice for £ 30, and stealing £ 50 — HARRY WILLIAMS, alias PERCY STEPHENS, age 19, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes hazel, low fore- head, Hat nose, large mouth ( mole at right corner), thick upper lip, lisps, flat- footed, turns his feet outwards, swinging gait ; dress, black jacket and vest, mixture trousers, black hard felt hat, carried a brown leather bag. A bootmaker's apprentice ; native of Anerley. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. DENBIGHSHIRE. 34.— Denbigh { County).— For obtaining goods by false pretences at Colwyn Bay— THOMAS MOLESWORTH HARPER, age about 65, height about ."> ft. 11 in., complexion sallow, hair and full pointed beard grey, stoops, turns his feet out- wards ; dress, dark suit and overcoat, black hard felt hat with high crown. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Jones, Denbigh. LANCASHIRE. 35.— Liverpool { City).— For forgery, 28th September last— WILMOT GOSLING, age 35, height 5 ft. G or 7 in., stiff build, complexion fair, hair brown, moustache light ; dress when last seen, dark morning coat and vest, light trousers. A canvasser and railway clerk. Absconded 27th ult. Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. KENT. 36.- Maidstone ' Borough). For stealing a coat ( recovered)— SAMUEL CORMACK, age 32, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes grey, cut scar centre of chest. A bricklayer ; native of Belfast. Has been previously convicted of larceny at Rochester. 37.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For failing to report— Licence- holder ROBERT BEARD, alias SNOOKS, ROBERTS, COX, and LEE, Office No. 2817- 00, age 67, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes hazel, " R. M." right forearm, left wrist deformed, 13 abscess scars left forearm, deaf. A ship's steward ; native of America. Sentenced at Maid- stone Sessions, 1th January, 1894, to 7 years penal servitude for larceny. Licenced 13th ult. C. L. U. 632. Information to Chief Constable Mackintosh, Maidstone. LANARKSHIRE. 38.— Glasgow ( City).— For embezzling £ 72 10s.— ALEXANDER ORR, age 30, height 5 ft. II in., complexion florid, red nose, hair dark brown, heavy moustache light brown ; dress, blue serge jacket suit, dark serge overcoat, black felt hat, carried a light brown hand bag. A bank teller; native of Glasgow. Absconded 31st ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. 39.— Chorley [ County). For stealing, 16th inst., a set of silver - mounted harness, except bridli— AARON GRESTY, age about 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, may be carrying one arm in a sling. A rag gatherer ; native of St. Helens. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. LINCOLNSHIRE. W. Lincoln ( City).— For obtaining £ 3 10s. 3d. by a worthless cheque on Barclay & Co., Man- ningtree, on 10th inst.— A MAN, giving the name of C. FENTON, of Colchester and Manningtree, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., broad set, com- plexion dark ; dress, dark overcoat and trousers, greyish tweed cap, carried a small black hand bag. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Mansell, Lin- coln. MONTGOMERYSHIRE. 41.— Llanidloes ( County).— For obtaining food, lodging, and money by false pretences, between 31st ult. and 6th inst. - W. M. JONES, age 32, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion, hair, and moustache, dark ; eyes dark brown ; dress, black coat and vest, dark trousers with light stripes, soft felt hat; carried a brown leather hand- bag and a silver- mounted cherry- wood walking - stick. Supposed native of Dinas, Mawddwy, Merionethshire. He represented him- self as an agent for the New Zealand Emigration Company.
