Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will he inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to he taken upon them hy another force. 3. Particulars as tn stolen property will he likewise inserted in one isiuc, if sufficient to enable the article in question, to he thereby identified. 4 In all eases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must he given, and, the e. r/ rt conditions must be clearly stated. 5, Portraits of persons > chose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at, a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. 6RZ. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. & Every anwWU'ement. if for the apprehension of a, pen'son, must be guaranteed, by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required tn he inserted and no warrant, is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed hy an officer of iwt less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far us practicable,, they a re alphabcMeaiiy arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE VJAZBTTE, miisf, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor iwtide of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will bo wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11 Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on. one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. NUMEROUS complaints have been received from persons living in the provinces respecting their business transactions with SYMONDS TEA COMPANY, Savoy House, Strand. This business is carried on by an American named Symonds ; and while there is nothing to justify the statement that the business is a fraudulent one, the advertisements are cleverly worded to mislead a careless reader. Bicycles are also advertised by him under the name of SYMONDS LONDON STORES, New North Street, London. W. C. ; and in reply to complaints, he has informed the Police that the purchaser, if dissatisfied with the bicycle sent, may return the same within a week, when the Company will refund the money. He represents also that he obtains these bicycles in large numbers from America, and is therefore able to dispose of them at a cheap rate. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICt 1.— Y Division.— For obtaining by false pretences, 7th inst., 6 rolls of linoleum— LEONARD BROWN, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion, hair and moustache dark. ( trust monies)— JAMES JOHN CUMMINS, late of 8 Union Court, Old Broad Street, age 53, height about 5 ft. 8 in., well built, complexion and hair ( turning grey) dark, wears glasses, very high forehead, top of head almost egg shape, walks with short quick step ; well dressed. AYRSHIRE. 3.— Ayr ( County). — For fraud — HARRY OLIVER, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, hair brown, moustache light; dress, light grey tweed jacket suit, black felt hat. Previously convicted at Warwick, 11th December, 1889, Worcester, 30th June, 1890, Lichfield, 1891, and Leicester, 7th April, 1896, of cattle stealing, false pretences, larceny, and fowl stealing respectively— GEORGE CLARK, age 45, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, and hair ( turning grey) dark; dress, dark tweed jacket suit, felt hat with square crown. Accom- panied by two women, one age about 30, tall, stout build, complexion dark, hair brown ; the other age about 25, short, complexion fresh, hair ( wavy) red, had with her a child age about 6 months. They represent themselves as horse dealers, and on purchasing a horse, pay part of the purchase money, making an appointment to pay the balance, which they fail to do. Warrant issued. BEDFORDSHIRE. 4.— Ampthill ( County)— For embezzlement — GEORGE WOODBRIDGE, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, hair ( curly), moustache, and eyes dark, small scar on chin ; dress, blue serge suit. CHESHIRE. 5.— Liscard ( County).— For obtaining, by false pretences, a brown coat and vest, blue mix- ture trousers, a pair of lace boots, and 10s.— H. MONTAGUE, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, hair ( thin in front) brown, speaks with London accent; dress, black coat and vest, dark trousers, hard felt hat, side spring boots. Represented himself as head attendant at a lunatic asylum. Warrant issued. 6.— Liscard [ County).— For stealing, 16th inst., a pair of binocular glasses in black leather case; 2 blue beaver overcoats, velvet collars, light colour lining, maker Crowley, Birkenhead ( one new, the other worn) ; 1 light covert coat, drab lining ; 2 light brown mackintoshes, maker Middletou, Birkenhead; 2 brown portmanteaux ( one 2 ft. ti in. by 15 in., the other 2 ft. by 12 in. ESSEX. <).— Braintree [ County).— For stealing, 4th inst, a Humber" Coventry bicycle, ' 98 pattern, 24 in. frame, brake to front wheel, back mudguard, recently litted witlt rat- trap pedals, teeth blunt, long plated pump, bag, bell, and lamp attached— WILLIAM HAYWARD, age about 28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache brown, eyes deep blue, long Bharp nose, several front teeth deficient ; dress, brown holland jacket, black trousers, plaid cap, black tie with silver whip and trumpet pin. County).— For stealing, 14th inst., at Broomfield, a silver Geneva watch, No. 113724, maker Pike, London, and a silver Albert chain, curb and shot in centre of each link— A MAN, age 45 to 50, height about 5 ft. 9 in, very red face; dress, mixture suit and cap. A saddler. Carried a brown leather parcel. Had in his possession a number of knives and razorB which he offered for sale. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 11 — Maldon County).— For obtaining £ 2 10s. by false pretences, 12th inst.— A MAN, giving the name of CAPTAIN WILSON, age about 55, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, full face, hair dark brown, short beard and moustache brown ( turning grey), tattooed on back of one hand ; dress, blue serge suit, blue muffler, blue peak cap, lace boots with square toes. Represented that he was the owner of a vessel lying off Maldon. Warrant issued. 12.— Maldon ( County).— For obtaining 5s. by false pretences, 11th inst. A quarter- master- sergeant of the Army Service Corps, wearing plain clothes. May be found in company of betting men. Absconded 8th inst. Information to Supt. Hale, Basingstoke. 16.— Ringwood ( County).— For obtaining £ 7 by a fictitious cheque, 25th ult,— ROBERT BARRETT, age 33 to 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, small sharp features, hair light brown, cut mark inside right wrist, 3rd and 4th right fingers deformed, very talkative, is fond of betting; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, light striped trousers, black hard felt hat or blue cap, may be wearing a black ( frock coat) suit. Is using cheques on the Wilts and Dorset Bank, Lymington Branch. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Supposed identical with F. BARBER, Case No. 15, 8th September last. Warrant issued. Chatham ( County).— For abandoning her child, age 6 weeks— MARY BUTLER, age 23 ( looks younger), height about 5 ft. 3 in, com- plexion fresh, hair brown, thick lips, abscess scar on one side of neck, simple looking ; dress, dark dress and cloak, khaki felt hat trimmed scarlet. LANCASHIRE. 29.— Chorley ( County).— For embezzling £ 5— WILLIAM FRY, age about 36, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache black, eyes bloodshot, turns his feet out, has a habit of twitching his shoulders and head when talking, speaks with Welsh accent; dress, blue serge jacket suit, dark brown tweed cap, light tie, square- toed lace boots. Is addicted to drink. Late salesman and collector for a sewing machine company. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. 30.— Bootle ( Borough).— For embezzlement — JOSEPH BRADLEY, age about 24, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., well built, hair and moustache dark ; dress, usually blue serge suit, black hard felt hat, A native of Scarva Down ; has been employed as a bill distributer. MERIONETHSHIRE. 31.— Dolgelley ( County).— For housebreak- ing— JOHN WILLIAMS, alias JACK THE SAILOR, age 35, height 5 ft. 5j in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache light brown, eyes greyish blue, long scar on left temple, scar between eyebrows, right forefinger, several back of head, blue mark left cheek bone, blue dot base 2nd right finger and left thumb, 2 blue scars back left hand, broad cheek bones, narrow chin, 3 upper front teeth deficient, slightly bow legged, carries his head slightly forward, sometimes appears to be lame ; dress, dark blue chain jacket, brown trousers ( too large at waist and seat), dark blue sailor cap, lace boots. NORFOLK. ?&.— Downham Market ( County).— For obtaining £ 1 16s. by false pretences on 3rd February last at Denver— THOMAS MERRY, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes blue. A farm steward or labourer. Supposed native of Pidley, Hunts. He left Denver about 12th ult. with his wife and 3 girls, aged 12, 9, and 7 respectively. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Mash, Downliam Market. 33.— East Dereham ' County).— For steal- ing ( bailee) a bicycle ( recovered) - GEORGE GREEN, alias HORNEY and JOHNSON, age 23, height 5 ft. 5£ in, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, scar left of forehead and 1st left finger, anchor, heart, arrow, and cross bar tattooed right forearm, 2 stars back of right hand, woman's head, cross bar, dot, and bow and arrow back of left hand, rings on 3rd ancl 4th left fingers ; dress, black jacket and vest, light check trousers and cap, khaki tie, brown boots. NOR THA MPTONSHIRE. 34.— Northampton ( County).— For cruelty to a horse, 7tli ult.— WILLIAM HEARN, age 24, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair, and small moustache dark ; wears dark velvet coat and vest, light plaid cap. A gipsy; travels the country with his father, who has two vans, with wicker baskets. Warrant issued. 3 PORTRAITS OF PERSONS WANTED METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 35.- P Division . - For embezzling £ 36 8s. and other sums— SEPTIMUS HALL, lute a lunacy officer, age 40, height 5 ft. 1 in., thick set, com- plexion fresh, hair ( brushed back) and moustache ( bushy) dark, turning grey, eyes blue, full round face, high forehead, bad ( eeth, has a peculiar habit of twitching his eyes when excited, walks with DURHAM. : H>.— Durham ( City).- For stealing ( bailee) 4th inst., a bicycle, •' Durham City Cycle" transfer on ball head, U. S. A. fittings throughout, plunger brake, Warwick tyres, rubber pedals, front fork enamelled over crown, flat handle, Brooks's saddle, lucas's bell, 24 in. frame, half- pitch chain, gear 74, 3 rifles stamped on all component parts, no mud- short, quick step ; dress, usually dark jacket suit, black hard felt hat, rides a bicycle. Well known at lunatic asylums and workhouses throughout England. Absconded 12th ult. Warrant issued. Not to bo arrested out of the United Kingdom. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 37.- Northampton ( County).— For steal- ing, 19th ult., at Far Cotton, 1 new black coat and vest; 1 gold signet ring, set red stones ; 1 heavy silver ring, 2- anna piece thereon ; 1 lady's silver Albert, tassels at end; 2 silk handkerchiefs; 2 new shirts ; and ±' 4— ARTHUR CHARLTON, age 2( i, height 5 ft. li or 7 in., complexion ruddy, hair and eyes dark, scar over left eye ; wearing the stolen coat and vest, dark cord trousers, dark cap. A furnace filter's labourer; native of Kettering. Previously convicted. Warrant issued. 38.- Northampton ( County).— For em- bezzlement — WILLIAM MANNING, age 22, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes ( supposed) grey, teeth deficient, mouth draws to one side when he is speaking. A baker; native of Little Brington. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Webster, Northampton.
