XVII., No. 1684. 1 All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to / hem. should be addressed to THE EDITOE OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted iv one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable, the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and. address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact- condition* must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for scrums offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 15.*. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photo- qraph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and. if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against h ivi, the requisition m ust be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to In- apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, tliey are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request fur the insertion of any announcement ivill b » wholly responsible for any proceedings which• may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received net later than noon oil Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, aiid accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance; cither at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 1- 3. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given oil application. R. ANDERSON, Editor. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. The amount of stolen property at present" circu- lated " by the Metropolitan Police has become so inordinately large as to prejudice or destroy the practical value of the records, and it has been found necessary to limit it very considerably. It has been decided, therefore, to discontinue the " cir- culation " in Informations and Pawnbrokers' Lists of all property stolen in the provinces, unless where there are grounds for believing that the property has found its way to the Metropolis. Chief Con^ stables are requested accordingly, when forwarding lists of stolen property to Scotland Yard, to send with them a letter to that effect. And if bills or circulars are received in future, unaccompanied by such a letter, it will be assumed that the " circula- tion " of the particulars they contain is not desired. The same course will be followed with respect to property lost and persons missing. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1.— E Division.— For obtaining credit to £ 301 15s. by fraud— ABRAHAM MARKS, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown ; dress, light fawn colour overcoat, dark suit, high silk hat. Warrant issued. 2.— F Division.— For obtaining by false pretences, 1 brass breast- plate : 1 pair spurs ; and 1 whip— ALGERNON THORNTON, age about 26, height 5 ft. 8£ in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, slight moustache and eyes brown, squeaky voice, rather flat- footed ; wearing long dark over- coat and brown cap. Warrant issued. 3.— N Division.— For stealing, 1st inst., a brown mare, 15 hands, white face, rat tail, recently blistered on both forelegs PRINTER, age 50, height 5 ft. 8 in., hair ( turning grey) brown ; dress, light tweed suit. BERKSHIRE. - L— Newbury ( County).- - For stealing 6 pairs trousers ( recovered)— HENRY SMITH, age 46, height 5 ft. 6J- in., complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache ( turning grey) dark, scar over right eye; dress, dark jacket, brown striped trousers, brown peak cap, shoes. A native of Newbury ; tramps the country. Has been pre- viously convicted. Warrant issued. Information to Supt, Robotham, Newbury. CARNARVONSHIRE. 5.— Carnarvon { County).— For abscond- ing with workhouse clothing— DAVID DAVIES, age 55, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes blue, clean shaved; dress, pilot cloth coat and vest, brown cord trousers, grey flannel singlet and pants, calico shirt, lace boots, all marked " C Union." A labourer; native of Aberdare. Warrant issued. Information to Supt Rowland, Carnarvon. CHESHIRE. 6.— Egremont [ County).— For stealing a brown morocco purse containing £ 1 7s. McCRAE, alias SCOTT and JACKSON, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes ( large) blue or grey; dress, grey jacket suit, lavender colour tie, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Stated he - was a lieutenant in the American Army. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McDonald, Egremont. DERBYSHIRE. 7.— Eckington { County). — For stealing 22nd ult., at Creswell, a watch and chain ( re- covered) 1 pair dark brown trousers, slight red squares ; 1 pair lace boots, size 7, nearly new ; and 13s. lOd.— A MAN, age 21, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair black, slight moustache, eyes ( slight cast in one) and bushy eyebrows dark; dress, black jacket and vest, dark cap, blue neckerchief with white spots, and the stolen trousers and boots. A collier or ironworks labourer. Information to Supt. Talbot, Eckington. DURHAM. K.— Hartlepool { Borough).— For obtaining £ 1( 1 by means of fictitious cheque— CHARLES JEFF ( supposed identical with THOMAS JOB- SON, see ILLUSTRATED CIRCULAR, No. 48, figure 2), age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, thin features, slender build, of respectable appearance ; dress, long grey overcoat, black velvet collar, white front and tie, black hard felt hat. He calls upon ship's chandlers, & c., stating he is manager for a shipping firm. Orders large quantities of goods for ship arriving in port on following day. Had in his possession a cheque book belonging to Lincoln and Lindsey Banking Company, Grimsby. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Hartlepool. ESSEX. 9.— Witham { County).— For assault on police— URIAH GRAY, alias JONAS GRAY, age 30, height 5 ft. 2 in., slight build, complexion, hair, and eyes dark, speaks quickly ; dress, cord vest with sleeves, cord trousers, blue cap. He travels the country with an old bay pony, and a cart with tent poles therein, " Uriah Gray, Great Totham, Essex" thereon; accompanied by a woman, and a girl age 3 years— JOHN WEBB, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair, side whiskers, and eyes dark; dress, old cord jacket suit, brown cap— VALENTINE WEBB, age 17, height 4 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes dark ; dress, brown jacket, cord trousers, brown cap. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 10.— Cardiff { Borough). — For obtaining money by a forged advance note, 15th ult.— JAMES STEPHENS, age about 45, height 5 ft. 8 in., muscular build, hair brown, tuft of hair on chin, walks rather stiff ; wearing a blue pilot cloth overcoat, and black hard felt hat with flat crown. A ship's carpenter or mate ; native of Dundee. HAMPSHIRE. 12 .— Gosport County).— For obtaining by false pretences, 26th December last, a " Royal Reigate " safetv bicycle, No. 1938, Clincher tyres, free wheel, " Darley and Trant," front rim brake, rat- trap pedals, upturned handle bars, cork handles, variegated ends. National saddle, trausfer on head and seat tube " Royal Reigate, Reigate & Mason, Birmingham," bantam cock in centre of transfer, plated lamp, bell, bag and pump attached, no mudguards— JAMES P. CAMBRIDGE, age about 23, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, thin features, rather high cheek bones, hair light brown, moustache light: dress, dark blue suit, white muffler, black hard felt hat. brown boots. A native of Gloucester ; absconded 26th December last. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Silver, Gosport. 13.- Kingsclere ( County).— For falsifying the books of the Kingsclere Workhouse— JAMES CLAYTON, age 37,. height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion fair, hair ( turning grey) brown, moustache ginger, short neck; dress, black morn- ing coat, dark tweed trousers and vest, light covert coat, blue melton overcoat, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Late master of the Kingsclere Work- house. Absconded 27th December last. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Wakeford, Kingsclere. U.— Southampton { Borough).— For em- bezzlement.— FREDERICK BOYLETT, age 36, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, hair, moustache, and eyes dark ; dress, dark overcoat, dark mixture coat and vest, black serge trousers and cap, dark brown striped muffler, lace boots. A ship's baker ; native of Pirbright. Has in his possession discharges from the steamships " Paris," " St. Louis," and " St. Paul." Absconded 12th inst. Warrant issued. Barclay & Co.' s Bank, Hitchin Branch, and a postal order for 3s., entrusted to him to deposit at the Stevenage Bank— GEORGE MUNDEN, age about 22, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair inclined to sandy, slight moustache, eyes blue ; dress, old grey cloth suit and cap, lace boots. A native of Hoxton. Ab- sconded 31st ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Hitchin. ISLE OF WIGHT. 16.— Newport { County).— For stealing, 6th inst., a silver watch and chain ( recovered)— A WOMAN, who gave the names of MONTRESS, MORTON and GRAY, age about 55, height about 5 ft., slight build, complexion and hair ( turning grey) dark ; dress, black three- quarter jacket, piece of black fur around neck, old black alpaca dress, small dark bonnet and veil, carried an umbrella. She calls at houses, pro- duces a testimonial purporting to have been given by a manager of a London firm, and states she is in search of a runaway daughter. Supposed known at Bournemouth, London, Liverpool and Portsmouth. Information to Chief Inspector Ayres, Quay Street, Newport. 9 ct. keepers, narrow, 2 9 ct. hollow signet, 1 _ 9 ct. twisted) — A MAN, age about 40, height 0 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair brown, moustache light brown; dress, light grey jacket, square cut corners, dark trousers, black hard felt hat. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Can terbury. 19.— Folkestone { Borough)— For embezzle- ment— PERCY CHETWYND PALMER, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, complexion dark, hair and moustache black, eyes full ( lark ; dress when last seen, dark overcoat with velvet collar, brown mixture vest, striped trousers, dark cap, lace boots. A reporter. Is in possession of an ambulance first aid certificate, and may endeavour to join a volunteer corps proceeding to South Africa. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Chief Constable Reeve, Folke- stone. 20 - Ramsgate { Borough).— For stealing a ponv and cart ( recovered)— WILLIAM EVES, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fair, moustache light, humpbacked ; wearing large pattern plaid suit. A hawker. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Jones, ramsgate. LANCASHIRE. 21.— Wigan { County). — For stealing, 31st ult., at Bamfurlong, a Swiss silver lever watch, No. 709078, large figures, 10/ 666/ 9 M scratched inside outer case, and 19s.— DENNIS TOCKER, age 17, height 4 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair and eyes brown, large nose ; dress, slate colour coat and cap, dark brown cord trousers, clogs. Previously convicted of larceny, and has been on a reformatory ship. 22.— Wigan ( County).— For stealing a watch ( recovered)— ERNEST BUCKLE 1, age 21, height 5 ft. 5£ in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, eyes blue ; dress, black jacket and vest, black striped trousers, green plaid scarf, black cap, clogs. A drawer ; native of Ince- in- Makerfield. Information to Supt. Brassington, Wigan. 23 — Liverpool ( City)— For failing to report — Supervisee DAVID O'HAGAN, Office No. 3749/ 97 ; age 41, height 5 ft. 2T in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey, two scars right side of forehead ; cross flags, crown, several dots, and " D " outside right forearm ; sailor dancing with flag in left hand and staff in right hand inside right forearm ; D. H. bracelet and flag outside left forearm. Sentenced at Gloucester Sessions 30th June, 1S97, to six months imprisonment and five years supervision for stealing a watch. Discharged from H. M. Prison, Gloucester, 29th December, 1897. KENT. 17. — Chatham ( County). — For stealing, 30th ult., a gold watch, keyless, " Presented to Sidney Ernest Bessent on liis 21st birthday, 23rd June, 1893" engraved inside; 1 lady's gold watch, No. 44684, small gold chain attached ; 2 gold bracelets ( one snake pattern, other chain); 1 gold wire brooch, 1890 in centre ( pin miBsing) ; 1 pair small gold earrings; 1 gold ring, set red stone and pearls ; 1 small gold oval locket; and several gold studs— TWO MEN, 1st, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, small mous- tache ; 2nd, age about 26, height about 5 ft. 7 in.; dressed as dealers. Information to Supt, Costar, Boston. 26— Lincoln ( City).— For failing to report — Supervisee JOHN SMITH, alias ROBERT WILSON, Office No. 150- 00, age 26, height 5 ft. 3J in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, L on right forearm, large birthmark centre of back. A porter ; native of London. Sentenced at Spalding Quarter Sessions, 20th October, 1898, to 18 months imprisonment and 2 years police supervision for breaking and entering! Liberated 22nd ult. NORFOLK. 27.— Norwich ( City).— For stealing a black jacket and vest, blue stripe lining ; 1 navy blue jacket and vest, light stripe lining; and other clothing— WILLIAM COXHALL, alias CLARKE, age 22, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, long face, hair and slight moustache light brown, eyes blue, long straight nose ; dress, blue jacket and guernsey, blue and white stripe trousers ( patched), dark blue cap, white neckerchief, old spring side boots. SHROPSHIRE. 28.— Whitchurch ( County).— For non- pay- ment of £ 6 10s. fine and costs imposed for larceny — THOMAS JAMES HENSMAN, age 49, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion sallow, hair, whiskers, and moustache light brown, eyes grey. A currier ; native of Burnley. Warrant issued. 10s. REWARD. 29.— Whitchurch ( County).— For deserting his family— SAMUEL alias WILLIAM JAR- MAN, age 54, height 5 ft. 2 in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, full face, hair, whiskers, and moustache grey, eyes blue. A cabinet maker. May be at a workhouse or infirmary. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Whit- church Board of Guardians to any person giving such information as will lead to the arrest of Jarman. Information to Supt. Edge, Whitchurch. STAFFORDSHIRE. 30.— Burslem ( County). — For carnally knowing a girl, age 15, at Cobridge, 29th ult.— FRANK GATER, aged 31, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., rather stout build, complexion pale, hair and moustache light brown, eyes blue, 2 coal marks on forehead, 2nd right finger stiff, slightly deaf, walks erect; dress, black cloth suit, blue silk muffler, brown cloth cap with velvet stripes, lace boots. A collier ; native of Hanley. Is fond of singing at public- houses. Absconded 1st inst. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem. 31 .— Lichfield ( County).— For stealing, 1st inst., at Chasetown, 1 lady's gold Geneva watch ; 2 silver patent English levers ; 1 silver watch ; 1 do., engine turned cases ; 6 metal stop watches; 1 pair Bedford cord breeches ; and 1 pair leather leggings— SAMUEL SAUL, age 19, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown ; dress, light brown coat, corduroy breeches, cap, brown boots and leggings. A native of Brades Village, Oldbury. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Barrett, Lichfield. 32— Longton ( County).— For burglary, 20th ult., at Fenton, and stealing a pair of men's light lace boots, size 9, toe capped; 1 black silk umbrella, cherrywood stick with silver ferrule JOHN THOMAS BAINBRIDGE, alias ALBERT- WILLIAM WILSON, and HODDSKIN, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., rather stout build, complexion, hair, slight moustache, and eyes dark, impediment in speech ; dress, dark cloth suit, light cloth cap, lace boots. A native of Bishop Auckland. Is a member of the Society of Friends, of which he is fond of talking. Warrant issued. 33.- Longton ( County). — For obtaining a Gladstone travelling bag by false pretences— MICHAEL or JOHN KELLY, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., well built, complexion fresh, full face, hair and side whiskers dark, eyes ( full) grey, of smart appearance ; dress, dark drab coat and vest, light cord breeches and leggings, white tie, black hat, lace boots. A groom and coach- man ; native of Dundrum. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bakewell, Longton. 34 — Stoke- on- Trent ( County). — For stealing, 26tli ult., a lady's silver Geneva watch, engraved back, white face, steel hands, a gilt twisted pattern guard attached. DYSON ( supposed false), age about 21, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, sharp features, hair light brown ; dress, black jacket and vest, dark pepper and salt coloured cloth trousers, dark plaid tie, brown gloves, carried a knotted loop handled cane. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 35.— K Division.— For stealing a set of har- ness ( recovered), also for receiving a mare— THOMAS LEIGH, Office No. 20( 57- 97, see Cases Nos. 3 of Oth and 5 of 12th ult., age 30, height 5 ft. 0 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar left elbow, right forearm, and forehead. A wheelwright; native of Bethnal Green. Was sentenced at South London Sessions, 14th July, 1898, to 9 months hard labour for attempted larceny; and at North London Sessions, 8th April, 1897, to 3 months hard labour for possess- ing housebreaking tools. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropoli- tan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 36.— P Division,— For stealing jewellery from her lodgings at Beckenham, 1st inst.— ANNIE HOLLAND, alias MAGGIE ANDERSON, Office No. 1234- 96, age 31, height 5 ft. li in. ( without shoes), hair and eyes dark brown, complexion sallow, sharp nose, two vaccination marks left arm, mole back of right upper arm, left cheek, left side of neck, front of left shoulder, on left side of waist, and on chest, scar left temple, ears pierced ; a servant; dress, when last seen, brown jacket and dress, black waterproof with cape, black sailor hat, black band. Was sentenced at Lambeth on 10th October, 1894, to six months hard labour; at Dartford, on 10th August, 1895, to ten days hard labour; at South London Sessions, on 10th Sep- tember, 1895, to seven months hard labour ; and at Maidstone Borough Quarter Sessions on 18th April, 1896, to twelve months hard labour for larceny. She takes lodgings at first- class boarding houses and commits larcenies. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard. Supposed a native of Dublin. She advertises concerts, and calls at breweries and obtains lists of their managers, to whom she sells tickets, stating the concerts are under the patron- age of their employers. On the dates advertised for the concerts to be held, she inserts an adver- tisement in papers stating they are postponed owing to illness of the artistes. Was sentenced to 3 months imprisonment at Middlesbrough, Novem- ber, 1895, for collecting alms in name of Ellen Carroll, and to 1 month at Carlisle, June, 1897, as a rogue and vagabond in name of Mary Blair.
