W. ...... • , 1 Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension w sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable actum to be talcen upon them by another foroe. . * Particulars as to stolen pronerty will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in qvestum to be thereby identified. • 4. In all cases vihere a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. < 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will'be inserted at a cost of lbs. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article, livery announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the. signature of an officer of ns> t less rank than Superintendent; atul, if the name of such person is reauired to be inserted mid no warrant is in force against h im, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, ax the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Aurwuncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, UK far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning deli nquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will b* wholly responsible for any proceeding* which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue s/ uruld be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition iu> t later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order or by Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. An mm nee me nts concerning property hist or persons missing can only he accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. SPECIAL NOTICE In certain cases questions have arisen as to the [ payment for photographs applied for by Police Forces under Home Office circular of 15th March, 1897. The Registrar of Habitual Criminals is • therefore authorised by the Secretary of State to say that, in any ordinary case, a photograph is not necessary to enable his Department to identify a prisoner, the measurements and finger prints being sufficient for the purpose ; but if a photo- graph is applied for, or if, in any rare case, it should be required to complete the identification, ithe cost will be charged to the Police Force i interested. ESSEX. 11.— Brentwood ( County).— For burglary and assault— HENRY BANTOCK, alias HENRY BANTICK, Office No. 241- 1) 9, age 33, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hail- dark brown, eyes blue, scar between eyebrows, above left eye, on left jawbone, right ankle, back of left hand, 1st right finger, 011 nose, and 2 back of head. A bricklayer, native of Stonham, Suffolk. Dress, light tweed jacket, brown trousers and vest, light cloth cap, white shirt with " J. M. Burrell, No. 4," marked in ink inside. Bantock is supposed to have an injured head and hand received from blows of the barrel of a gun. Sentenced at Essex Quarter Sessions, 19th October, 1898. to .'! months hard labour for larceny. Liberated 18th January, 1899, 9882. Has been several times convicted, including a term of penal servitude for horse- stealing. Information to Supt. Portsmouth ( Borough).— For steal- ing, 12th inst., a nearly new " Mereader " mando- line, 8 strings, 25 plain brown ribs to back, covered machine end, mother ' o pearl edging, red, blue, and green ribbons attached, in a dark tan coloured leather case lined with red, and about £ 2 — WILLIAM REGINALD BROOKS, alias RAYE, age 22 to 24, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., com- plexion fair, hair light brown, brushed up in front and parted rather low on left side, slight mous- tache or clean shaved, eyes rather sunken, dark underneath lower lids, strong Midland accent ; til- ess, blue serge lounge coat, blue ( double breasted) vest, bluish grey striped trousers, black and red tie, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Is fond of billiards. 15.— Portsmouth ( Borough). For house- breaking, ( ith inst., and stealing a fancy brown grey tweed jacket suit, size 6, and a pair of trousers ( large size)— THOMAS BUCKLEY, age 29|, height 5 ft. ( I in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown ( inner corner of left eye grey). A moulder ; native of Neweastle- 0' 11- Tyne. Is a private of the 1st East Lancashire Regiment. Youatt " scratched on inside case, long silver chain attached, and 19s. 2d.— ROBERT WILLIAMS, age 22, height about 5 ft. 1 in., hair and slight moustache dark, scar hack of head ; dress, black clothes, green tie, hard hat, patent leather shoes, and the stolen shirt. KENT. 19.— Dover ( Borough). — For leaving his children chargeable to the common fund of the Dover Union— WILLIAM HENRY FLEMING, gae ,' 17, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion ruddy, hair and moustache ( turning grey) and eyes dark brown, " Jerusalem " tattooed on one forearm, cut scar on third anil fourth letters ; dress, blue pilot cloth suit, Alpine hat, lace boots. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Prior, Tunbridge Wells. LANARKSHIRE. 22. Glasgow [ City). - For embezzling £ 82 2s. Od. between 17th April and 19th ult.— ROBERT MURDOCH, age 28, height 5 ft. 5 or li in., stout build, complexion ruddy, round face, hair and moustache brown, is addicted to drink ; dress, short light overcoat, blue serge jacket suit, black felt hat, wore a yellow chain. A native of Glasgow : is believed to be travelling the north of England for a wine and spirit merchant. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Chorley ( County). — For embezzling £ 3 Os. 5d., during January and February last— THOMAS HOUGH, age about 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown. A labourer or carter; native of Walton- le- Dale, Lancs. Absconded 8th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. 24.— Liverpool City).— For failing to report — Licence Holder JOHN KELLY, alias THOMAS KERSHAW and JAMES LEGGATT, Office No. 496- 99, age 52, height 5 ft. 3J in., hair grey, eyes blue, complexion fresh, 3 scars right back and 1 left top of head, right eyebrow, left middle finger slightly contracted, 3 scars back right upper arm, 1 front right forearm and right thumb, brown mole left ribs, pockmarked. Sentenced at Liver- pool Assizes 23rd May, 1892, to 7 years penal ser- vitude for burglary, which with remanet expires 27th April, 1900. Licenced 20th February last. D. I. S. 107. Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. 25 Blackpool • Borough).— For stealing £ 11 5s., 9th inst.— FRED WILSON, age about 22. height about 5 ft. 6 in., hair brown, clean shaved, eyes blue — TOM SMITH, age about 19, height about 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, hair light, eyes blue, thick lips, two blue dots back of one wrist, scar near one eye, wearing green mixture tweed jacket suits, black billy- cock hats, patent leather boots, kid gloves. Plasterers ; stated they were brothers. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Derham, Black- pool. 26.- Rochdale ( Borough).— For larceny— MARY JANE MARSHALL, age 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in , hair dark brown, long face, wearing blue skirt, green plaid shaw with yellow stripe. MARY ANN MARSHALL, age 20, height 4 ft 1U or 11 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair brown ; wearing black skirt, green plaid shawl with red stripe. & jtj 27. Rochdale ( Borough). — For stealing from his lodgings— 1 plain 9ct. keeper ring, 2 dress rings ( 1 set 5 white stones the other 5 rubies)— GEORGE CHEETHAM, age 45, height 5 ft. 6 in., broad set, complexion sallow, hair dark browm ( turning grey), eyes hazel, blue mark right cheek bone, small scar left of forehead. A native of Rochdale. Information to Chief Constable Barry, Rochdale. SOMERSETSHIRE. 28.— Taunton ( County). — For stealing banker's cheque antl order ( recovered)— JOHN THOMAS, age 35, height 5 ft. 10 ins., complexion pale, hair dark brown, moustache and eyes dark, has lost the sight of right eye, owing to cataract : dress, light brown mixture suit, light brown dust coat, black bowler hat, light lace boots, usually wears large plain gold ring. A native of Stogum- ber, Somerset. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Durham, Taunton. 29.— Bath ( City).— For stealing a diamond cluster ring, set oriental sapphires in centre, old- fashioned setting in pale gold ; 1 marquise ring set diamonds and ruby ; 1 ditto diamond ring set turquoise in centre ; 1 massive gold curb bracelet with safety chain— ALBERT SAMUEL CHAN- DON, a French chef, age 43, height 5 ft. 10 in., hair grey, half of right foot and one right finger missing, is suffering from- an accidentto right arm. Hatl in his possession a wooden box, overcoat, and an umbrella, horn handle, with hole in top. Information to Lieut. Colonel Gwyn, Chief Constable, Bath. STAFFORDSHIRE. 30.— Burslem ( County).— For stealing lis. — FREDERICK DONE, age 29. height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache santly, eyes brown ; dress, black cloth suit, black hard felt hat, lace boots. A joiner ; native of Burslem. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem, 31.— Leek ( County .— For assault and rape — JOHN BAGGOTT; alias ROBERT SMITH, JOSEPH BROWN and WILLIAM FINNEY, age 34, height 5 ft. 5£ in., complexion sallow, hair black, moustache dark brown, eyes hazel, small mole right side of face, cut mark near right eye ; dress, dark pilot coat, cord trousers, white muffler, black cap, heavy boots ( all old). A fitter, native of Uttoxeter. Has been in the South Staffordshire Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Breton, Leek. STIRLINGSHIRE. 32.— Stirling ( Borough)— For obtaining food and lodgings, and 11- by false pretences, and stealing a " Standard " road racer bicycle, Dunlop tyres, Westwood rims, enamelled chocolate, drooped handle bars bent forward, rat trap pedals, 23J in. frame, 1897 pattern. B. S. A. fittings, new Reynolds' T" ir in. chain, Brampton's saddle, double alarm bell, 110 brake or mudguards.— THOMAS STEWART, alias ALFRED GASS, age about 24. height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., slight build, complexion sallow, sharp features, long straight nose, one upper tooth protruding : dress, black serge reefer jacket, grey tweed trousers, brown and green check cap, brown lace boots now blackened; stated he was a native of Bradford, where he served his apprenticeship at an engineer's, and that he was recently second engineer on the s. s. " San Fran- cisco." He obtained the above amount on the pretence of paying the carriage of his luggage, which was at the railway station. Information to Chief Constable Ferguson, Stir- ling SUFFOLK. 33.— Ipswich ( Borough). — For stealing ( bailee) 11 lady's old silver Geneva watch, and a pair of lace boots— GEORGE LAMBERT, age 19 ( looks older ', height 5 ft. 7 in., clean shaved, supposetl cataract left eye, left arm tattooed; dress, blue black coat and vest, dark serge trousers, light cap, neckerchief with dogs and horses' heads thereon, may be wearing the stolen boots; a stableman, may seek employment at livery silbles and omnibus yard?. Has in his possession a paper relating to service in the 20th Hussars. Warrant issued. Information to Lieut.- Col. Russell, Chief Con- stable, Ipswich. SUFFOLK ( East). 34. Lowestoft ( County . - For assault— ROBERT JAMES BRAY, age 25, height 5ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, flesh mole left side of neck, large scar left shin, R. B. tattooed left forearm ; dress, brown jacket and vest, cord or fustian trousers, peak cap, heavy lace boots. A native of Lowestoft ; supposed tramping to London. Warrant issued. K in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light, eyes grey, scar on bridge of nose. LOST % £ 5 REWARD. 106.— 25th ult., a light sable collie dog, long nose, roof of mouth very black, white patch over both ears and down front of nose, half white legs, white front, white patch back of pole, black at tip of tail, long fine coat, is very nervous and carries its tail low, answers to the name of " Laddie." It is possible that this dog may have been obtained possession of for stud purposes or for exportation. The above reward will be paid by A.
