All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SOOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. , . , %. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of < he POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. . „ . 5 Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be. inserted at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. fvery announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of rwt less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is reouired to be inserted and no warrard is in force against him, the requisition must, be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement toill be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied' by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Orde- or by Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street Pout Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on ( replication. R. ANDERSON. Editor. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police the Photographs anil descrip- tive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, Ac.. & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. DENBIGHSHIRE. 6.— Wrexham ( County).— For stealing a postal order for 10/-, and £ 51 — WILLIAM ARTHUR HESKETH, age 15, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair light; dress, dark mixture tweed suit, dark green cap, may have with him a mackintosh. ' DERBYSHIRE. 7— Chesterfield[ County).— For stealing, 14th ult., at Staveley, a tie and 16s. — JACK SMITH, age 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair very dark, eyes dark brown, slight rash on face near cheek bones, wears a lot of hair in front outside of cap ; dress, black dress coat, blue cloth double- breasted vest, open front, pearl buttons, black trousers, dark green tie, grey cap, American boots, pointed toes. A hairdresser; native of Belvedere, Kent. Has been employed at Black- pool, Liverpool, Manchester, Buxton and Chester- field. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Faulkner, Chesterfield. ^ S~ sr 8.— Chesterfield Borough).— For steal- ing, 29th ult., 3 pipesand a razor ( 1 pipe and razor recovered)— EDWARD PEARCE, age 50, height 5 ft. 4 in., pock marked, hair ( turning grey) dark, moustache brown : dress, long black frock coat, light cloth trousers, black hard hat; a journeyman tailor. He offered the pipes ( 1 a meerschaum with silver ferrules, the other a briar), for sale at tailors' workshops. Warrant issued. 9.— Chesterfield Borough).— For steal- ing, 2nd inst., a gold oval shape brooch, raised centre ; 1 lady's silver geneva watch gold colour dial, and a long gold guard — EDITH WOOD, age 23, height about 5 ft. 2 in., stout build, com- plexion fresh, round features, hair dark brown, eyes blue ; dress, blue cloth dress, light fawn cape, black sailor hat, button shoes. Stated she had worked at a mill at Belper and at Derby, also that she intended to seek a situation as housekeeper. Warrant issued. DEVONSHIRE. 10.— Exeter ( County .— For obtaining, 29th nit., at Yarcombe, by a worthless cheque on the Wilts and Dorset Bank, Exeter, alight bayihorse, 7 years, 15" 2 hands, face and one fore foot white, short tail, in fair condition ; a set of brown leather silver mounted harness, with curb, bit, and chain ; a high dog cart, painted dark blue, lever seat front and back, new lamps, with tin in sockets to keep them firm— G. THOMAS, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair brown, slight moustache ; dress, mixture suit and cap; a low horse dealer. He left Yarcombe with the above horse and cart on 30th ult., accom- panied by a man age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., short feet, peculiar walk ; dress, blue serge suit: who was driving a dark pony and trap. DORSETSHIRE. 11— Sturminster Newton County).— For neglecting to maintain his wife and family, whereby they became chargeable to the Stur- minster Union— SAMUEL ROSE, age about 50, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache ( turning grey), and eyes dark, reserved in manner ; dress, velvet coat, plush vest, cord trousers, cap. An engine driver or carter ; native of Okeford Fitzpaine, Dorset. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Collins, Sturminster Newton. FLINTSHIRE. 12.— Mold ( County).— For neglecting their children— JOHN WILLIAMS, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion dark, hair and moustache black, delicate appearance ; a hawker. ANN JANE WILLIAMS ( wife of above), age 28 to 30,. height 5 ft. 6 in., very stout build, addicted to drink. They are accompanied by a girl age 10, and three boys, ages ti years, 3 years, and 18 months respectively. Had with them a horse and small cart, may be found camping out. Warrant issued. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 13.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For attempting to obtain £ 2 by false pretences 5th ult.— EDITH HALFORD, age 23, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion ruddy, round face, low forehead, short nose, hair and eyes ( cast in one) dark ; dress, black three- quarter length jacket, brown fur trimming, dark blue dress, black and white straw hat. A domestic servant; native of Brecon. Absconded 6th ult. May be found at Salvation Army and other rescue homes, or in company of prostitutes. Warrant issued. li— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing £. 50 8th inst.— WILLIAM T. GRANT, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion sallow, rather long face, hair ( short) brown, clean shaved, full eyes, short- sighted, wears concave pebble spectacles, walks quickly, leans his head forward and swings his hands, quiet manner; dress, brown tweed jacket and vest, new grey trousers, black bowler hat, lace boots. A clerk, and an amateur photog- rapher ; may endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. 15.- Neath ( Borough).— For stealing a chim- ney sweeping machine — EDWARD CLARKE, age 28 to 3( 1, height about 5 ft. 1 in., slight build, complexion fair, thin features, hair and moustache brown, scar right cheek; dress, dark suit as usually worn by sweeps. Absconded 14th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Evans, Neath. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. lti.— Northleach ( County).— For obtaining the post of headmaster of Yan worth School and the salary and monies payable as such head- master, between 25th Feb. last and 28th ult., with intent to defraud— GEORGE PASSMORE, alias JOHN VYE PARMINTER, age about 50, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion fair, rather small features, hair ( bald on top), whiskers and moustache turning grey, eyes grey, impediment in speech, speaks quickly, closes his eyes when talking, right knee gives way inwards; dress, dark coat and vest, grey tweed trousers, high silk hat, generally carries a black thorn walking stick. May be accompanied by lfis wife, age about 45, and two daughters, ages 2( 1 and 11 respectively. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Everiss, Northleach HAMPSHIRE. 1".- Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing 2 postal orders ( 1 for £ 1 No. 500162 or 163, 1 for 5s. No. 470725 to 727) issued at Broseley, Salop, 14th ult. ; 1 English lever watch, open face, white dial, " F. Lewis" scratched on dome in 2 places, and Nos. 21146 and 38987 ( nearly new); 1 black leather purse, 3 compartments, knob fastening, containing a silver curb chain and 12s.— ERNEST DAY, age 19, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, sear on nose. A groom ; native of Handsworth, Birmingham. Is an absentee from the Shropshire Light Infantry. Warrant issued. 18.- Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing an eight- day clock, white dial, English figures, black hands, walnut colour case, with three small wooden ornaments on top, glass door, winds at back : and £ 15 13s.— ELIZABETH CUDMORE, age 46, height 5 ft., complexion pale, hair light brown, 3 false teeth ; may be wearing a blue serge dress. Warrant issued. 19 — Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing 2 blue guernseys, 1 blue muffler, 1 blue stripe cotton shirt — JOHN EDWARD HUMBER- STONE, age 20, very short, thin face, complexion and hair dark ; supposed wearing the stolen pro- perty, dark blue trousers and old lace boots. Late a cook on a fishing smack, and may seek similar employment. r ff 20.- Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing £ 6, 27th ult.— FRANCIS GEORGE LYNCH, age 27, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes grey, dagger tattooed left forearm ; dress, dark plaid suit, soft felt hat, had with him a light skull cap ; a musician Is a deserter from the 1st Royal Berkshire Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. HERTFORDSHIRE. : l\— Hemel Hempstead ( County).— For stealing 24th ult , at Northchurch £ 4 5s. Od.— GEORGE WILLIAMS, age about 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark, moustache grey, scar left ear ; dress, dark pilot jacket, corduroy vest and trousers, black and white plaid scarf, light peak cap; a navvy. Stated he had been in the Grenadier Guards and police ; may be found at St. John's Wood. Warrant issued. 22.— Hemel Hempstead ( County).— For obtaining £ 500 by false pretences, 2nd February last, at Great Berkhampstead— FRANCIS ELLS- WORTH, an American, age about 40, height 5 ft. 11$ in., very slight build, complexion fair, long face, hair and moustache light brown, bald, eyes grey, speaks with American accent, quiet manner, a teetotaller : dress, dark clothes. A stenographer, Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Frogley, Hemel Hemsptead. KENT. 23.— Chatham ( County). — For deserting their families, CHARLES WINTER, alias C. H. CRAWFORD, age 22, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion pale, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes blue, birthmark ( similar to cut with 2 or 3 stitches back of neck); wearing black serge jacket and vest, cloth cap, plaid scarf, light lace boots. A shunter; may be found at Hull or Grimbsy Fish Docks. — THOMAS WILLIAM BISHOP, age 31, height 5 ft. 7 in., very stout build, complexion fresh, hair brown ( turning grey) moustache ginger, eyes blue, female tattooed right forearm, scar left eyebrow; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, moleskin trousers, light cord cap, bine striped neckerchief, heavy lace boots. A cement labourer ; has served in the Army. Warrants issued. Information to Supt. Lacy, Chatham. 3 5. 24.— Cranhrook ( County).— For wilful damage and absconding from Cranbrook Work- house— WILLIAM McGORDON, age 43, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair and whiskers ( full) reddish brown ( turning grey), eyes blue, peculiar expression of eyes, repulsive looking ; dress, dark monkey jacket, cord trousers, shiny peak cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Fowle, Cranbrook. LANCASHIRE. 25.— Garstang ( County).— For housebreak- ing 6th inst., and stealing a silver Geneva watch, wdiite dial, hour hand missing; 1 silver brooch, about 2 ins. long; 1 brass watch key, " Carr, jeweller, Garstang," thereon, and £ 12 7s. 6d CYRIL R. CROSSLEY, age 15, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, left eye bruised and black; dress, corduroy suit, blue serge cap, nailed boots, uniform of the North Lancashire Reformatory. A native of Birken- head. Information to Supt. Proctor, Garstang. 26.— Liverpool ( City).— For stealing, 29th nit., a bright bay cob gelding; a Lome gig, builders, Lawton, Liverpool ; and a set of brass mounted harness— CHARLES TUCKER, age 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion sallow, hair anil moustache dark brown, slight beard, speaks with American accent; dress, dark suit and overcoat, black Alpine hat. Stated he was a mineral water manufacturer, and was about to pur- chase a business. He obtained the above on trial for two days and absconded. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. 27.— Southport ( Borough).— For failing to report — Licence Holder JOSEPH TURNER, Office No. 3191- 98, age 28, height 5 ft. 5$ in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, tattooed star centre of chest, flower inside each calf, letters DESJCHADO, star, pierced heart, Polly and cross left forearm, star outer left upper arm and left wrist, mizpah and En avant back of left hand. A barber ; native of Wigan. Sentenced at Liver- pool, 3rd December, 1890 to 10 years penal servi- tude for wounding. Licenced 28th October, 1898, Q. 381. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 28.— Tredegar ( County).— For stealing 4 suits of clothing, at Ebbw Yale, 10th ult.— ALEXANDRA MCDONALD, age about 28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., complexion very dark, hair ( turn- ing grey) and eyes dark, cut scar left side of face; dress, navy blue twill serge suit, black bowler hat, brown lace boots. A travelling draper, native of Lockerbie, Dumfries. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Allen, Tredegar. ^ c r NORFOLK. 2' X— Thetford ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences, 20th ult,, 3 jackets, ( 1 black beaver cloth, plain back, pearl buttons, 1 black cloth, lined striped heliotrope, 1 black box cloth); 1 black fancy chip hat, trimmed pink silk ribbon and spray ; 1 ditto trimmed shot silk, with two fancy pins and sprays attached, in a brown card- board box with red edge— A WOMAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion ruddy, hair ( parted in centre) dark, speaks slowly, wearing fawn jacket, black hat, carried a small light brown basket with two handles. She calls upon shop- keepers and obtains wearing apparel on approba- tion for her daughter who is going to service. Gave the name of Mrs. Bloy. Supposed wanted elsewhere. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. W right, East Harling, or to Inspector Simpson, Thetford. NORTHUMBERLAND. 30.— NewcastSe- on- Tyne ( City).— For failing to report, Licence holder GEORGE McGUIRE, alias JOHN McGUIRE and GEORGE SMITH, Office No. 2804- 98, age 66, height 5 ft. 5$ in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes grey: tattooed head and bust, of female and head and bust of male and bird front of left forearm, anchor, flag, swan, and T. H. front of right forearm, scars on head and chest. Sentenced at Durham Quarter Sessions, Hist December, 1894, to 5 years penal servitude for larceny ( person). Licenced 29- 9- 98, A P U 1310. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Superintendent, Detective Department, Newcastle- on- Tyne, OXFORDSHIRE. 31.— Oxford ( City).— For stealing from his lodgings a light plaid cap ; 1 pale blue Oxford shirt with yellow stripes ; 5 pocket handkerchiefs marked " R. L. S." or " M. E. L."; 1 red leather purse containing between 10s. and 14s.— FRED- ERICK JOHNSON, age about 21, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion very fair, clean shaved ; may be wearing a light plaid or dark jacket, tweed trousers, and the stolen cap. Has been employed by a baker ; stated he was a native of Tiverton, Devon. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Cole, Oxford SHROPSHIRE. 32.— Church Stretton ( County).— For larceny at Hopton Castle— GEORGE LELLO, age 58, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, nose deformed; dress, black cardigan jacket, drab cord trousers and vest, red scarf, dark grey flannel shirt, black hard hat. A labourer, native of Knighton, Radnorshire ; has worked as a bricklayer at collieries at Tredegar and Mountain Ash. Stays at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. He attends popular events and obtains money on the pretence that the report will appear in a newspaper. He also represents that he is connected with the London " Daily Standard," and that he has been sent to the cotton district to report matters for insertion in that paper. Warrant issued.
