SPECIAL NOTICE. PRISONERS UNDER REMAND. The aid of the Metropolitan Police, is frequently Hought by other Police Forces to make inquiries respecting the antecedents of prisoners under re- mand, and such inquiries often result in identi- fying accused persons as being old offenders. But, in many cases, the time allowed for such inquiries is so brief that effect cannot be given to the request for information or that it can be com- plied with only in a perfunctory manner, and at great inconvenience. The Editor would therefore suggest, in the interest of the Provincial Police Forces, that four clear days, at least, should be allowed in cases of the kind, to complete the inquiries asked for. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT I— J Division.— For embezzlement, 27th ult.— JAMES STEVENS, age about 23, height 5 ft. it J in., complexion pale, hair ( curly) and eyes dark ; dress when last seen, black diagonal jacket and vest, light trousers, light covert coat, black hard felt hat; of military appearance. A native of Woking, Surrey. ' f Warrant issued. 2.- 5 Division.— For embezzlement— ANDREW COWAN, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes blue, stoops slightly and has a slouching gait; dress, dark tweed suit, check waterproof coat with cape, black hard felt hat. Supposed a native of Man- chester. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office. New Scotland Yard, S. W. . „ CITY OF LONDON. 3.— ARTHUR COURTENEY BLUETT, Case No. 4, 20th January last. Warrant withdrawn. 4.— For forgery K. MONTROSE HIND, age 27, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., slight build, small features, hair light, clean shaved, speaks with American accent; wearing brown mackintosh, cloth cap. A canvasser, absconded 1st inst. He is in receipt of a pension from the American Army. Warrant issued. 5.— For fraudulently obtaining money for the purchase of shares— CECIL HARRISON, late of 32, Selby Road, Anerley, age about 40 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. ti ill., complexion fair, hair light, of smart appearance. He was in business at Cardiff' in 1876 as " Harrison Bros, and Moore," is now supposed carrying on a fraudulent stock- broking business under an assumed name. Warrant issued. t).— For forging and uttering a cheque for £ 310 — CHARLES A. WILLIS, late of 23, Throgmor- ton Street, E. C., age about 10, height 5 ft. 2 ill., complexion ruddy, hair light: dress, grey serge suit, blue mixture overcoat, hard felt hat, lace boots. A clerk, absconded 24th ult. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, KC" ABERDEENSHIRE. 7.— Aberdeen ( County). The warrant against JAMES BREBNER, Case No. 6. 3rd inst.. has been suspended. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 8. Cambridge Borough . For stealing, 3rd inst.. by false pretences, a " Westminster" bicycle, enamelled white, lined blue, dropped handle bars, 22- in. frame, plain " Dunlop" tyres, non- slipping band on back wheel, rat- trap pedals, toe clips, belt 011 front wheel, tangent spokes— — JAMES, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, clean shaved : dress, navy blue suit. He left a card purporting that he represented a firm of general engineers and boatbuilders at Chiswick. Supposed wanted elsewhere. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Holland, Cam- bridge. CARDIGANSHIRE. £ 5 REWARD. 9.— Aberystwyth ( County).— For desert- ing his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to the Aberystwyth Union — JOHN JAMES HUGHES, age 30, height about 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion dark, hair and moustache black, eyes brown, cut scar top of head, small lump under moustache. A miner; native of Talybont, Car- diganshire. Warrant issued. The above Reward will be paiil by the Guar- dians of the Aberystwyth Union for such infor- mation as will lead to the arrest of Hughes. Information to Supt. Phillips, Aberystwyth CHESHIRE. 10.- Egremont ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) CHARLES H. WILLIAMS, age 32, height 5 ft. ti} in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes grey, American coat of arms tattooed on left forearm ; dress, black morning coat, light trousers, black hard felt hat, all fin- worn. A railway servant, native of Bootle. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McDonald, Egremont. £ 2 REWARD. 11. Middlewich County). For deserting his family- JOHN STEELE, age 38 to 40, height about 5 ft. ti in . complexion fresh, hair, whiskers, moustache and eyes dark, right knee deformed and turns outwards. A native of Allostock, near Knutsford. May be employed in the neighbour- hood of Manchester as a carter for a florist or a market gardener. The above Reward will be paid by the Guar- dians of the Northwich Union for such information as will lead to the arrest of STEELE. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Large, Middlewich. £ 2 REWARD. 12. Oakmere County). For deserting his two children, leaving them chargeable to the Northwich Union THOMAS SCOTT, age about 40, height 5 ft. 5 or t! in., complexion fresh. A labourer; native of Moulton, Cheshire. The above Reward will be paid by Mr. A. Fletcher, Solicitor and Clerk to the Guardians, Northwich, for such information as will lead to the arrest of SCOTT. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Runcorn { County). - For stealing Sfl 10a„ by trick ( fortune telling)— A WOMAN, supposed MARY FINNEY, age about 35, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes blue ; wearing dark jacket with fur collar, blue striped apron, knitted woollen vest, brown felt hat. A gipsy. Is travelling with a van, " George Shaw, Shrewsbury," thereon. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson. Runcorn DEVONSHIRE. 11.— Devon/ tort { Borough).— For an inde- cent assault. 21st ult.— HENRY WHEELER, age 31, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion fair, thin features, hair ( slightly bald in front) brown, moustache sandy, eyes hazel, mole right axilla, warty mole right flank, scar left buttock ; dress, when he left here 23rd ult., long dark brown mixed tweed overcoat, short band at back, dark trousers, torn at bottoms, black hard hat. Is an Army Reservist of the 2nd Bedfordshire Regiment. Has been hawking fish and fruit. Warrant issued. Photogragh may be seen on'application. Information to Head Constable Matters, Devon- DORSETSHIRE. 15.— Wareham { County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, 21st and 22nd ult., at East Stoke— GEORGE BAXTER, alias MITCHELL, age 3i » , height 5 ft. 3£ in., com- plexion sallow, deep dimple in chin, hair and slight moustache dark brown, eyes brown ; dress, black jacket and vest, dark mixture trousers, dark tie, black hard hat. A printer, stated he was a native of Leeds. He obtained lodgings by repre- senting that he was a land surveyor : decamped the following day, stating he was going to the station to meet his assistant. Previously convicted of similar offences at Devon Quarter Sessions, April, 1894. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Carter, Wareham. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 16.- Bristol { City).— For embezzling £ 20— GEORGE JEEVES, age 38. height 5ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( thin on top) dark, mous- tache sandy, mole on nose and chest: dress, grey overcoat with velvet collar, light jacket and vest, mixture cloth trousers, light cap. Has been employed in delivering bread. May seek similar employment. Absconded 28th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HADDINGTONSHIRE. £ 2 REWARD. 17.- Haddington ( County). For deserting his children, .' 10th. I nne, 1898 JOHN MCKAY, age 37, height 5 ft. 6£ in., complexion fresh, long face, hair light brown, moustache light, eyes grey, cut scars on left forefinger and at base of left thumb, burn scar under chin ; dress when last seen, blue pilot jacket, brown moleskin trousers, red and white striped shirt, brown cap, heavy lace boots. A labourer or foreman navvy. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. Robert Masterton, Inspector of Poor, Dunbar, for such information as will lead to the arrest of McKay. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Mann, Haddington. ISLE OF WIGHT. 18.- Newport ( County).— For embezzling 4s.. 1st inst. FREDERICK WILLIAM PEN- FOLD, age 35 to 38, height about 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion dark, hair, whiskers and moustache black ( cut short), eyes dark brown, scar on left eyebrow ; dress, grey cycling suit, blue skull cap, sometimes wears black jacket and alpine hat. A photograper's canvasser and collector ; native of Hartfield, Sussex. Supposed to have in his possession a large number of Is. yellow receipt stamps in the name of A. Debenham and Son, Isle- of- Wight, and a " James" light roadster safety bicycle. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Inspector Ayres, Quay Street. Newport. KENT. If• — Chatham { County. For stealing a silver Geneva watch, " A. Hunt " scratched on inside of inner case, silver chain, long and short links alternately, with seal, one side white, the other black with white edge, attached— CHARLES FRENCH, age about 40, height 5 ft. 2 in., thick set, complexion sallow, upper front teeth missing, hair ( close cut) black, stubby moustache dark brown ; dress, black coat with velvet collar, cord trousers, dark blue serge cap. heavy lace boots. Well known at Notting Hill and Woolwich. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lacy, Chatham. 20.- Dartford { County).— For failing to report— Licence holder EDWARD PEAGRAM, alias STEEL, PRICE, JONES, WILLMAN, and JOHN HICKEY, Office No. 3691- 98, age 53, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, " B. Cook " encircled by wreath front of right forearm, tumour right side of neck, left middle finger slightly deformed. A shoe- maker. Sentenced at Gravesend 24th June, 1892, to 5 years penal servitude for stealing muslin. Licenced 24th December last. A. G. S. 388. Information to Supt. Sharp, Dartford 21.- Sevenoaks { County).— For ' stealing, 22nd ult., a gold keyless watch, gold chain with gold toothpick attached : 1 silver Geneva watch ; 1 gold ring; 2 ladies' gold rings; 1 gold oval brooch— ISADOR AUGER, a Jew, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 2 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair light brown, eyes brown, stoops and very- bow- legged : dress, light chocolate colour morning coat, dark brown vest and trousers, hard felt hat, rather broad brim. Holman, Sevenoaks. 22.— Gravesend { Borough).— For obtain- ing £ 16 by a worthless cheque on the Lincoln and Lindsey Banking Co., Ltd., Grimsby, 18th ult.— RICHARD TURNER, age 32, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, straight nose, slight moustache, speaks with north country accent; wearing long black overcoat, turned down collar, black bow tie, 3 gold studs in front of shirt, hard felt hat. Appearance of a seafaring man. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Thornton, Gravesend. KIRKCUDBRIGHTSHIRE. 23. - Kircudbright ( County). — For a criminal assault, on 25th and 26th January last— WILLIAM STEWART, age 31, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, bait- dark brown, moustache light, eyes grey; dress, dark tweed suit, strong lace boots or clogs. A labourer: native of Crossmichael. May seek employment at public works. Is a member of the Scottish Borderers Militia. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Davidson, Kirk- cudbright. . LANCASHIRE. 24 — Liverpool { City).— For attempting to obtain £ 25 by false pretences— ERNEST H. COOPER, age about 27, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, full face, hair and moustache light, speaks slowly : dress, blue serge suit, dark grey overcoat, hard hat. A native of Manchester. May be found in company of loose women. Has lately come from Canada. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable Detective Department, Liverpool. 25.- Rochdale { Borough).- For stealing a mason's hammer ( recovered), a mason's mallet, red handle, and about 30 chisels marked " J. N."— KELLY, age about 33, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., com- plexion fresh, hair and moustache sandy ; wearing dark cord trousers, white apron, plaid cap. Had the appearance of a stonemason. Information to Chief Constable Barry, Rochdale. . NORFOLK. 26. Norwich ( City).- For obtaining money and food by false pretences, between 1st and 5th ult.— FREDERICK TAYLOR, alias FIELD, SMITH, and HOWARD, age about 35. height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, high cheek bones, large nose, hair and eyes ( small) black, clean shaved ; dress, dark check jacket suit, blue shirt, light bow tie, large grey check cap, lace boots. Stated he had served in the Royal Artillery, and hail been a conductor in the Commissariat Depart- ment in India. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Winch. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 2- 7.- Daventry ( County). — For - larceny, 15th ult.— WILLIAM HARTLEY, age 2 « to 30, height 5 ft. 4 - or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and bushy moustache brown, rather full face, pug nose, - boils on neck, dress black coat, dark vest and trousers, black hard hat, lace boots. A builder's clerk,, native of Headington. Late secretary to a friendly society. Warrant issued. For embezzlement— EDWARD BROOKS, late secretary to a lodge of Oddfellows at Highbridge, age 57, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion, hair, bushy whiskers and moustache dark, turning grey, may now be clean- shaved, round- shouldered; dress, dark tweed suit, bowler hat. Has been a storekeeper at locomotive works, and may seek similar employment. Absconded in December last. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Balkwill. Weston- Super- Mare. STAFFORDSHIRE. 31. Leek { County).— For embezzlement— PERCY BORTHWICK WHITELEY, late a coal merchant's agent, age 21, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey. A gymnast and of good physique ; dress, navy blue suit, fawn- coloured cap, brown shoes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Breton, Leek, SURREY. 32.- Chertsey { County).-- For collecting alms under false pretences, 2nd inst. COLES, age 25 to 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion pale, hair and small moustache dark, eyes brown ; dress, dark slate- colour overcoat with velvet collar, dark trousers, dark tie, black hard felt hat, thick boots, ( patch on outside right). He represented that an employee of the Gas Company had met with an accident and was about to be sold up. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. ' 34.- Aston Manor ( County ). — For steal- ing, 1st inst., a silver hunter lever, No. 37096 : 1 metal watch : a 5- chambered revolver ; 1 pair blue serge trousers and vest— TWO MEN ; 1st, age 24 or 25, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion dark, hair black, clean shaved ; dress, black coat and vest, light check trousers, brown buff gaiters ; 2nd, age 25 or 26, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, clean shaved ; dress, black suit, had with him a small tin box. N."); 1 gold screw- stud, set brilliant ; 1 9- ct. gold pin, safety pin pattern ; 1 silver full- hunter watch, size 10 or 12, engine- turned cases, worn smooth, gold hands, second hands, full plate, " Richard Nelson, Coven- try," thereon : 1 9- ct. gold chain, curb pattern, with seal attached : 1 pair red silk braces, worked with flowers ; 2 linen fronts ; 1 pair cuffs, with gold- fronted links; 2 pairs kid gloves ( 1 pail- light., 1 dark brown)— TWO MEN ; 1st, age 25, height oft. 5 or ti in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes dark; dress, black morning coat, open vest, grey mixture trousers, green plaid cap ; 2nd, age 23, height 5 ft. 8 ill., slight build, complexion pale, hair brown, clean shaved : dress, black jacket and ( open front vest, grey trousers, billycock hat, lace boots. Had with them a violin anil case, music book and case, a brown square tin box with brass lock and 2 black straps. Stated they were " Professionals." Warrant issued. W., whose apprehension is sought for falsification of accounts— age 69,- height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair ( partly bald), close cut beard and whiskers, and heavy moustache ( pointed) grey, bright blue eyes, false teeth, high shoulders, military appearance ; dress, black frock coat and trousers, silk hat with deep mourning band, side spring boots, under linen marked G. R. Birt, had with him a Gladstone bag, containing dress clothes. Late Chairman and Managing Director of the Millwall Dock Com- pany, Limited. Absconded 9th ult. May endeavour to leave the country. County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences at Belittle, 8th and 9th ult.— JAMES WATSON, age 38, height 5 ft. 4J in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache dark, eyes brown : dress, navy blue jacket, drab cotton cord sleeved vest and trousers, black leather leggings, muffler, and cap, strong lace boots. A native of East Cowton, North Riding. May be found working at farms. Previously convicted of fraud and larceny. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Archer, Leyburn, or to Inspector Holmes, Bedale. JOHN DIXON, JOHN STUART DIXON, JOHN GRANT, JOHN HENRY, and JOHN MASON, Office No. 2140- 97 ( escaped from each side of forehead, point of second left finger. Native of Hesketh Bank, Lancashire. Last con- victed at Liverpool, 28th November last, for obtaining goods and credit by false pretences at Ashton- in- Makerfield, and sentenced to five years penal servitude ; previously convicted at Bolton, YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 12. For stealing, 3rd insl. at Roundhay A lady's gold brooch, size of a five- shilling piece, set 5 clusters of turquoise, diamond in centre of each cluster : 1 lady's long gold chain, curb pattern, gold watch key attached ; 1 five- stringed pearl necklace, silver snap, set diamonds : 1 pair of silver earrings, and £ 40 NELLIE INGLESON, age 21, height ."> ft. 3 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair ( with fringe black, eyes hazel : dress, black dress, light ( tailor- made) three- quarter jacket, straw- coloured hat, trimmed blue, white and pink flowers, low shoes, far worn. A domestic servant, native of Knaresboro'. Pre- viously convicted. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Tebbutt, County Buildings, Park Street, Leeds. WILTSHIRE. 38.— Swindon County). For bigamy— JOHN BISHOP, alias BEE, age about 42, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes hazel, blue scar on one temple. J. D." on shield, and a purse containing .£ 1 3s.— A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion rather pale, clean- shaved ; dress, old light dust coat, dark grey trousers, light cloth cap. Hawks boot laces. 40.— Beverley ( Borough). — For stealing, 3rd inst., a silver lever watch No. 87576, " Wil- liam Shearer, Leeds, Yorkshire," scratched inside outer case, and a 9- ct. gold albert, oval- shaped links, J C on a small plate near swivel— a man who gave the name of JACKSON ( correct name supposed Smith), age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache sandy, right thumb has been crushed and flattened, cut on nose ; wearing dark clothing, blue cotton jacket, cloth cap with bright leather peak.
