R E O U All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SOOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of n> t less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is reauired to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. ATION S. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less raiik than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received net later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order or by Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. R. ANDERSON, Editor. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 8.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as ''• o the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date oi delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notmed to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of adver- tisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detection of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regulations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( b The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The name and address of the person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. ( 32 and 33 Vic., cap. 24, sec. 2.) 2. No expression must be used in such an adver- tisement, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. Attention is particularly directed to the conditions ( a) to ( d), clause 1, as Police Notices are constantly being received by the Metropolitan Police in which the conditions mentioned have not been complied with, especially those marked ( a) and ( e). Such notices are not distributed. MOTE. There are 190 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. BERKSHIRE. 1- — Maidenhead. ( County).— For stealing, 18th inst., 1 brown and yellow check jacket suit, " G " in silk under tab ; 1 pair grey woollen drawers and vest; 1 red stripe shirt; 1 pair blue worsted socks— WILLIAM EMMETT, alias HOLLY, age about 24, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair brown, woman tattooed on right arm ; dress, light grey suit and cap. Has served in the 18th Hussars. May seek employment at livery stables or repositories. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Dorrell, Maidenhead. 2.— Wokingham ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, a blue and brown check bag; 1 lady's silver Geneva watch ; 2 ladies' silver albert chains ; 1 pair gold sleeve links ; 1 thin gold ring, set 5 garnets; 1 gold ring, set 3 pearls, surrounded with blue stones ( 1 stone missing), shape of forget- me- not ; 2 silver brooches; 1 gold pin, set garnets; 1 ditto, set red stone ; 1 black leather purse and £ 57, including a £ 5 note— A MAN, age 23, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, round face, hair sandy, clean shaved, eyes ( full) grey; dress, long light over- coat, dark trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots with wide soles « . Molsher, Wokingham. 3.— Windsor ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, between 3rd and 12th inst., an 18- carat gold fetter link watch guard, gold swivel seal at- tached ; 1 lady's gold Geneva watch and long gold guard, " Prince of Wales" pattern— A MAN, age 30 to 33, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair, slight moustache and eyes dark, rather high fore- head ; dress, black reefer coat and vest, melton cloth trousers, brown overcoat, light check bow tie, brown iud gloves, black billy- cock hat, patent leather shoes. A tailor ; has served in the Royal Irish Fusiliers. Information to Chief Constable Carter, Windsor. CHESHIRE. 4.— Altrincham ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences, 2 pairs women's boots ( 1 pair size 4, patent leather toecaps " AVIM " stamped inside ; 1 pair size 5, patent leather fronts) and 2 pairs corsets — A WOMAN, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion ruddy, hair dark, of dissipated appear- ance ; dress, black dress, three- quarter tan colour jacket, with large collar, black hat trimmed feathers, brown kid gloves. States she was a servant from a house in the neighbourhood. Warrant issued. 5,— Altrincham ( County).— For forging and uttering a cheque for £ 140, 14th inst.— R. STRONG ( supposed false), age about 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion pale, hair black, eyes dark; dress, black suit, short dark overcoat, black felt hat, turn- down collar, black knot tie, button boots, wore a gold watch and brown leather guard, carried an umbrella. He called at a shop and after making a purchase ob- tained a cheque for £ 2 made payable to " R. Shaw," which he stated he wanted to send to a friend. The cheque was afterwards altered to £ 140, payable to " R. Strong," the original sum and name having apparently been erased by the aid of chemicals. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McDonald, Altrincham. 6.— Chester ( City).— For fraudulent bank- ruptcy— GEORGE WILSON JONES, age 32, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, long thin face, hair light brown, moustache light. A draper ; native of Tryddyn or Nerquis, Flintshire. Has been in business at Fljnt, Bradford, Blackpool and Rochdale. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Laybourne, Chester. DEVONSHIRE. 7.— Exeter ( County).— For neglecting to main- tain his wife and family— CHARLES DRAY, age 41, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light, slightly bald, eyes blue; wearing navy blue serge or brown cloth suit. A waiter; native of Topsham. Well known at Eastbourne, Brighton and Hastings. Is living with a tall thin woman who has two children. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable of Devon. Exeter. DORSETSHIRE. 8. — Dorchester ( County). — For stealing £ 33 14s. 3d., 3rd inst., at Portland Barracks— JAMES ROSE, alias WILLIAM BROOKS, age about 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion very fair, hair very light, eyes blue, front teeth deficient, slightly round- shouldered; wearing black reefer coat and vest with pearl buttons. A navvy; supposed a native of Plymouth. JOHN BROOK- BANKS, age about 24, height 5 ft. 6| in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, slightly pock- marked, port wine stain b » ik of right leg, large mole left breast; dress, new black jacket suit, dark cap, dark necker- chief with blue stripes. A native of Durham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Burden, Dorchester. DURHAM. 9.— Stockton- on- Tees ( County).— For steal- ing, 10th inst., 3 overcoats ( one recovered): 1 very dark grey tweed with black velvet collar, usual pockets black bone buttons, dark check lining, chain hanger, slit both sides, fastens with two buttons, " G. Barugh " and may have " Peckston " on tab ( nearly new); 1 long brown mixture ulster ( tweed), usual pockets, brown and red check lining, slit at back, may have " Cowley " on tab inside collar— 2 • T H E POLICE GAZETTE. JDannett on left leg; wearing a rough blue serge jacket, red woollen knitted muffler, brown cap. Has been previously convicted at Nottingham, Sun- derland, Maidstone and Hartlepool. HAMPSHIRE. 10.— Portsmouth ( Borough)— For stealing, 13th inst., an overcoat ( recovered)— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair and moustache dark brown, scar about H inches long on back of head ( right- side) ; dress, dark lounge suit, dark skull cap, thick boots, carried awalking stick. 11.— Portsmouth ( Borouqh).— For stealing £ 3 10s., 28th ult. BRANDON, age about 25, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, light mous- tache ( cut close), square chin, initials, moss rose with red bud and spray on right forearm, anchor on left, bust of woman with hat on chest; dress, black coat and vest, striped tweed trousers, tweed overcoat, light cloth cap ; recently discharged from the Royal Navy. May endeavour to obtain a situation as groom. 12.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing £ 1, 12th inst— PATRICK DALY, age about 53, height 5 ft. If in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache dark, eyes blue; dress, dark tweed coat, dark blue vest, brown tweed trousers, white scarf, fawn cap. Served several years as a merchant seaman. May be found at common lodging- houses. 13.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— On a warrant for larceny ( bailee)— Licence holder HENRY LEE, alias THOMAS LEWIS and GEORGE PEARCE, Office No. 3307- 98, age 66, height 5 ft. 1 in., com- plexion sallow, hair, bearct and moustache grey, eyes grey, left ring finger deformed, scars front right fore- finger, right side and back of neck, centre and left of chest; dress, black lounge suit, black hard felt hat, red and black scarf, carries small black bag and crooked handle walking stick. Stated his intention of tramping to Waterloo. Has cards printed des- cribing himself as a watch and clock repairer; native of Shepton Mallet. Sentenced at Gloucester Assizes, 12th February, 1895, to 5 years penal servitude for larceny. Licenced 11th ult. V 27. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 14.— Southampton ( Borough). — For being concerned vith a woman ( in custody) in stealing a rug ( recovered)— JOHN WILLETT^ age 25, height 6 ft., complexion fair, hair brown, small moustache light brown; dress, pepper and salt coloured coat, cord trousers, blue neckerchief with white spots, thick lace boots. A dealer. May be found in com- pany of low horse dealers. Information to the Chief Constable, Southampton. HERTFORDSHIRE. 15. — Hemel Hempstead ( County). — For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— HENRY CROSS ( supposed false), age about 60, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark ( turning grey) ; dress, black coat and vest, dark striped cloth breeches, brown cashmere gaiters, black hard felt hat, carried a brown mackintosh. He obtained lodgings at a beer- house, stating he was buying horses for an American firm of horse dealers. Is accompanied by his wife, age 85 to 40, height about 5 ft. 1 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes brown, large teeth ; dress, striped bodice, old dark skirt, long black jacket ( with brown fur collar), black sailor hat; and a daughter, age about 17, complexion and hair ( frizzed in front) dark, round face ; dress, navy blue dress, short black jacket, spotted sailor hat, button boots. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Frogley, Hemel Hempstead. KENT. 16.— Canterbury ( City).— For stealing ( bailee), 16th inst., a " Quadrant" road racer cycle, black enamelled 24- in. frame, 80- in. front, 28- in, back wheel, 1^- in. Dunlop Welsh non- slipping tyres, rat- trap single bearing pedals, dropped handle- bar, 43476 on back, no mudguards or brake— RICHARD BATES, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, full features, hair brown, heavy moustache ( ginger), of military appearance; sup- posed wearing brown jacket and black and white straw hat. A native of Stechford, near Birmingham. Has been employed as a cyc'e agent. Warrant issued. 17.— Canterbury ( City).— For stealing £ 30, 8th inst.— JOHN WILLIAMS, Squadron Quarter- Master Sergeant, 10th Hussars, age 88, height 5 ft. 6£ in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes ( small) blue, spot tattooed on left wrist; dress, brown jacket suit, grey cap, lace boots. Had with him a brown leather portmanteau and a pair of brown boots. A native of Abergavenny. Absconded 8th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Canter- bury. 18.— Ramsgate ( Borough).— For being con- cerned with a man in custody in stealing 2 silver table spoons ; 2 ditto forks; 1 silver desert fork and 3 silver tea spoons— FRITZ MILLER, age 21 or 22, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion dark, pimples on face, clean shaved ; dress, dark jacket and vest, grey trousers ( tight fitting), grey cap, brown boots ( blacked over). A coachman. JOHN PERKINS, age 21 or 22, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, clean shaved, scars under chin, left wrist and on one leg ; wearing dark clothing, skull cap, lace boots. Ab- sconded 22nd inst. May endeavour to enlist. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Jones, Ramsgate. 19.— Tunbridge Wells ( Borough).— For em- bezzlement— FREDERICK LEACH, age 84 to 36, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., hair brown, moustache light brown ; dress, light grey jacket suit, soft felt hat, cycling shoes or brown boots. Absconded 15th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Trior, Tunbridge Wells. LINCOLNSHIRE. 20.— Alford ( County).— For . stealing ( bailee), 26th August last, at Mablithorpe, a child's 4- wheel mail cart, nearly new, painted pale blue, upholstered in blue leather, hood attached with brass folding bars, rubber tyres, bent handles— SISSIE STEVENS, age about 24, height 5 ft. 1 to 4 in., rather stout build, complexion fair, hair and eyes dark ; dress, black skirt, blue and white spotted blouse, dark cape, blue straw bat with blue and red band, of good ap- pearance. She bad with her a male child about 3 months old. Has been a vocalist, and may be found at theatres or music balls. She may also seek assistance from clergymen and ministers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Spofforth, Alford. MONMOUTHSHIRE. £ 1 REWARD. 21.— Pontypool ( County).— For deserting his children, leaving them chargeable to the Pontypool Union— WILLIAM JONES, age 36, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion and hair dark. May be working at a quarry or colliery. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Pontypool Union for such information as will lead to the arrest of Jones. Warrant issued. £ 1 REWARD. 22.— Pontypool ( County).— For desertirg his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to the Pontypool Union— PHILIP HENRY BARGE, alias GEORGE WILSON, age 28 to 30, height about 5 ft. 10 in., rather slight build, complexion fair, hair dark, long thin face, slight hare lip, slight cast in one eye, P B tattooed on left arm. A labourer; supposed native of Birmingham. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Pontypool Union for such information as will lead to the arrest of Barge. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. James, Pontypool. RENFREWSHIRE. 25 . Greenock ( Borough).— For embezzlement — ANDREW DUNSMORE, age about 40 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache black, eyes dark; dress, dark tweed jacket suit, stand- up collar, black felt hat, of smart appearance. Has been cashier in a ship- owners' office. Absconded 16th October last. Warrant issued. 26.— Greenock ( Borough).— For stealing an American organ— JOHN TOWART, alias STE- PHEN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., com- plexion swarthy, sharp features, hair and moustache dark brown, speaks with a slight American accent; dress, when last seen, brown tweed suit, dark peak cap. An engineer; is a member of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers. Warrant issued. 27.— Greenock ( Borough). — For bigamy— ELEANOR STEWART or TURNER, age about 31, height 5 ft., stout build, complexion fresh, round face, hair dark, eyes blue; generally well dressed. She is supposed to be travelling through England with her husband, a dealer in cheap jewellery; may hold a pedlar's certificate. Supposed well known in Northumberland, Durham, Yorkshire and Staffordshire. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Angus, Greenock. SHROPSHIRE. 28.— Oswestry ( County).— For assault, 2nd October last— ARTHUR PRICE, age 87, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, woman tattooed on right arm, Arthur Price on left arm. A labourer ; native of Dudleston Heath, near Ellesmere. Is an army reservist. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lewis, Oswestry. SOMERSETSHIRE. 29.— Weston- super- Mare ( County). — For stealing, 23rd inst., £ 8 5s. from a lodging house keeper by a trick GOODWIN, age about 30, height 5 ft., slight build, complexion sallow, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes hazel, small thin lips ; dress, light Norfolk knicker suit, drab stockings, green and red tie, turn down collar, light check cap, tan gloves, patent leather shoes ; of good appearance and address. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Balkwill, Weston- super- Mare. STAFFORDSHIRE. 30.— Burslem ( County).— For exposing unsound meat for sale, 10th inst.— JOHN BRISTOWE READE, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown. A butcher and low cattle dealer; native of Shavington, near Nantwich, Cheshire ; frequents markets, sales, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem. 31.— Longton ( County).— For exposing un- sound meat for sale— ROBERT MITCHELL, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion, hair, mous- tache and eyes dark ; dress, black coat and vest, brown trousers and leggings, black hard felt hat. A native of Hilderstone, Staffordshire. ENOCH CLARK- SON, age 24, heightabout 5ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache brown, eyes grey ; dress, grey mixture cloth suit, black hard felt hat. Both are well known to butchers in Staffordshire, Shrop- shire and Derbyshire. Warrants issued. Information to Supt. Bakewell, Longton. NORFOLK. 23.— Swaffham ( County).— For stealing 6s.— GEORGE ( TADSTON, age 29, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown; dress, dark coat and vest, brown trousers, black hard hat. A native of Canning Town, London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Short, Swaffham. 24.— Walsingham ( County).— For embezzle- ment— ARTHUR FOX, age 23, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair and slight moustache dark brown, eyes grey, heavy eyebrows, high cheek bones, feminine voice ; dress, check jacket and vest, dark trousers, white tie, light cap. A labourer ; native of Sculthorpe, Norfolk. May be found at Middles- brough or Newcastle- on- Tyne. Wariant issued. Information to Supt. Harvey, Walsingham. SUSSEX ( EAST). 32.— Eastbourne { Borough).— For stealing £ 6 9s. 2d. on 20th inst.— HARRY SWINBURNE age about 16, height about 5 ft. 3 in., slight build, complexion fresh, rather prominent nose, hair light; dress, brown coat and vest, light trousers and cap, grey flannel shirt, lace boots, clothing may have " Plummer" on white tape, sewn thereon. An errand boy. Supposed a native of Hastings. Ab- sconded 20th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Plumb, East- bourne. 33.— Hastings ( Borough).— For neglecting to maintain his wife and family— EDWARD FITZ- GERALD, age 42, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair, moustache and eyes brown. Information by wire to be forwarded to the Metro- politan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. PORTRAITS OF PERSONS WANTED. CHESHIRE. 35.— Oakmere ( County). — Woodcut portrait and description of ALBERT BARLOW, whose apprehension is sought for embezzling and stealing £ 220 8s. 4d., age about 35, height 6 ft. in. ( without boots), complexion sandy, thin features, rather long crooked nose, hair ( thin on top), moustache ( long and curled), and full trimmed beard sandy, eyes grey, 2nd right finger deformed, walks with peculiar swinging gait; dress, blue serge jacket and trousers, corduroy vest, long brown over- coat. A native of Over, where he has lately been a bank manager. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom, Information to Supt. Johnson, Oakmere, near North wich.
