All ann& wusements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SOOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3 Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the ruime and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be insetted at a cost of lbs. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article, t. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of n>> t less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehensum or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order or by Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. R. ANDERSON, Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. Very many complaints have been received about the CROWN PERFUMERY COMPANY, 34, Arlington Street, Clerkenwell, London, E. C. This is a fraudulent business which entraps dupes by advertising bogus competitions. It is carried on by one C. L. YOUNG, who has conducted similar frauds in the names of " W. T. COLLINS & Co.," at 20, Southgate Road, N., and " G. L. GRAHAM, Ltd.," at 41, Elsdale Street, Hackney. Unless a warrant is obtained against him by some one whom he defrauds, the Metropolitan Police cannot take action. ( Correspondence C. I. D., No. 129627.) APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. BEDFORDSHIRE. 1. — Luton ( Borough). — For stealing £ 105 16s. lid.— ALFRED TOYER, a sub- post- master, age 43, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes blue; dress, light brown dust coat, grey tweed trousers, black tie, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Was seen on 21st ult. in the neighbourhood of West Kensing- ton, London. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Teale, Luton. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 2.— Aylesbury ( County).— For stealing, 29th ult., a dark grey cloth overcoat, plaid lining, piece of braid on top of pocket; 1 shaving brush and a white handle razor— A MAN, age about 20, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, one front tooth de- ficient ; dress, short black cloth jacket, brown cloth vest, cord trousers, light cloth cap, old boots ( right cut). Recently travelled with a circus. Information to Supt. Pitson, Aylesbury. CHESHIRE. 3.— Altrincham ( County).— For stealing, 22nd ult., at Broadheath, a pony ( recovered)-- SOLOMON SMITH ( supposed false), age 25, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, hair ( brushed down on forehead) dark brown, of gipsy appearance ; dress, dark jacket and vest, blue trousers, cap, heavy nailed boots. Is supposed to have been in the army. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McDonald, Altrincham. 4.— Birkenhead ( County).— For stealing, 10th ult., at Lower Bebington, a bay filly ( recovered)— JOSEPH HAMBLETT, age 22 or 23, height about 5 ft., slight build, complexion dark or swarthy, hair and moustache dark brown; dress, light three- quarter dust coat, black jacket and vest, light striped trousers, dark tie, light tweed peak cap, lace boots. A painter; supposed a native of Liverpool. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bowyer, County Hall, Birkenhead. 5.— Egremont ( County).— For obtaining £ 25 by false pretences— WILLIAM bERSON, age about 43, height 5 ft. in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache sandy, limps slightly ; dress, grey suit, brown overcoat, brown soft felt hat, low shoes, of theatrical appearance. WTarrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Hindley, Egremont. 6.— Middlewich ( County).— For obtaining, by false pretences, a new " Ormonde" Road Racer bicycle, gear 84, enamelled black, rat- trap pedals, " Palmer" tyres, bright tangent spokes, dent in top bar ( near centre)— SIDNEY SISSONS, age 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion florid, hair ( long and frizzed) and moustache sandy ; dress, brown mixture suit, black hard felt hat, carried a cherry- wood walking stick. Recently employed as a clerk at Manchester ; is an inveterate smoker and fond of billiards; a native of Morley, near Leeds. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Large, Middlewich. DENBIGHSHIRE. 7.— Denbigh [ County).— For abandoning his three children at Abergele— JOHN ELLIS, age about 31, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes hazel; addicted to drink. Is a, notorious poacher, and well known at Bangor, Car- narvon, Conway, Llanrwst, Festiniog and some parts of South Wales. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Denbigh. DORSETSHIRE. 8-— Blandford ( County).— For deserting his children, leaving them chargeable to the Blandford Union— FREDERICK SAMUEL ADAMS, age 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair, small moustache and eyes dark; dress, blue serge suit, dark peak cap. A blacksmith. Is believed to be in Wales. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Brown, Blandford. 9 — Shaftesbury ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences— JOHN A. PAKENHAM, age about 45, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache light; dress, dark or brown suit, bowler hat, wearing a diamond pin and a gold watch chain. Stated he was the son of the late Captain Pakenham, of Cheltenham, and that he had recently returned from India, where he had been managing a tea plantation. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Dennett, Shaftesbury. DUMFRIESSHIRE. 10.— Dumfries ( County).— For embezzlement— WILLIAM JOHNSTONE, age 84, height 5 ft. 10 in., well built, complexion sallow, bair brown, clean shaved, eyes dark ; dress, greyish tweed suit with red stripes forming large squares, and cap. A native of Langholm, Dumfriesshire. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the County Chief Constable, Dum- fries. Information to Inspector Lennon, Clacton- on- Sea. 12.— Epping ( County).— For obtaining 8s. by false pretences, at Harlow, 12th ult.— a man, sup- posed JOHN CLEMENTS, age about 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion, hair, moustache and eyes dark; dress, short blue jacket, ( supposed) cord trousers, fireman's cap. A wireworker, carries his tools in a flat rush basket. Wan- ant issued. Information to Supt. Womack, Epping, or to In- spector Gibbons, Harlow. 13.— Mistley ( County).— For obtaining 5s. by false pretences at Manningtree, 15th ult. SPOONER, alias BRUCE, age about 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., thick set, complexion pale, hair and small moustache dark, walks slowly; dress, black cloth morning coat, black felt hat, lace boots. A journey- man tailor, carried a grey paper parcel with leather strap. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Burrell, Mistley. FLINTSHIRE. £ 2 REWARD. 14.— Holywell ( County).— For deserting his wife and family— ROBERT WILSON, age 38, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion sallow, hair ( curly and turning grey) light, eyes blue, dimple in one cheek, one nostril enlarged. A cooper ; native of Holywell. Plays a cornet and side drum. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Holywell Union for such information as will lead to the arrest of Wilson. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Hughes, Holywell. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 15. — Chipping Campden ( County).— For malicious damage to machinery at Moreton- in- Marsh— a man, who gave the name of J. THOMAS, age about 55, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey), full beard, moustache and eyes grey. An engine fitter; supposed a native of Bir- mingham ; stated he had worked at Clee Hill and Stourbridge. Had in his possession a large black wooden box and tool bag. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Phelps, Chipping Campden. HAMPSHIRE. 16.— Alton ( County).— For embezzling £ 1 5s.— JAMES CHURCH, age 40, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion dark, hair, small side whiskers and eyes dark brown. A groom; native of Newbury, Berks. Ab- sconded 13th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Tames, Alton. 17-— Portsmouth ( Borouqh).— For embezzling £ 5, 28th March last— JOHN DAVID STRIDE, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., hair brown, straggling beard and moustache, impediment in speech, swinging gait; dress, when he absconded in June last, dark overcoat, brown jacket and vest, dark trousers, black hard hat. A carpenter and joiner. Warrant issued. 18.— Portsmouth ( Borouqh). — For larceny ( lodgings)— FLORENCE EVANS, age about 25, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., slight build, complexion and hair dark, pointed features; dress, long black velvet cape, green skirt, white hat with broad brim. May be accompanied by her husband, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, small moustache, front upper teeth missing, and two children ( one age 5 years, the other 9 months). Warrant issued. 19.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For forgery and embezzlement— HENRY GOWER LAMBERT, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, square shoulders, hair ( curly) dark brown, moustache brown, may be clean shaved, thin face, high cheek bones, two upper front teeth broken; dress, blue serge double- breasted jacket and vest, dark trousers, blue skull cap, of smart appearance. Has served in the Royal Artillery. Recently employed by the British Supply Association. Absconded 15th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Detective Department, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 20.— Southampton ( Borouqh).— For obtaining £ 1 15s. by false pretences— WILLIAM BOND, age about 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, hair ( cut short) light brown, slight moustache light; dress, black coat and vest, dark trousers with light stripe, brown cap, brown shoes. He attends places of worship and represents that he is in bad circum- stances ; on lodging being found for him he gets money from the landlady on the pretence that he has obtained a situation as waiter, and then absconds. May be found at Soldiers' Institutes, Church Army Homes, & c. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southampton. HERTFORDSHIRE. 21.— Ware ( County).— For larceny, 10th ult.— A MAN, age about 23, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., com- plexion sallow, pock marked, hair and eyes dark brown, crippled at left knee and walks with a crutch ; dress, dark grey cloth jacket and vest, brown cord trousers, dark tie, grey cap, lace boots ; and A YOUTH, age about 18, height about 5 ft., stout build, complexion fair, full round face, hair and eyes dark; dress, dark grey suit and cap, dark tie, lace boots. Duke, Ware. 22.— Watford ( County).— For stealing a large sum of money— THOMAS HIGGINS, age 22, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion very fresh, hair and eyes dark; dress ( usually), blue suit, black hard felt hat, light dust coat, sometimes wears a long light colour mackintosh with cape. Wood, Watford, ISLE OF WIGHT. 23.— Ryde ( Borough).— For shopbreaking, be- tween 22nd and 24th ult., and stealing about 9s. worth of penny stamps and 3s. half penny stamps and about £ 2 7s — GEORGE MUMFOR1), age 22, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, small dark moustache ; dress, blue serge suit and cap. A butcher. ERNEST MUMFORD, age 19, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, hair light, round shoulders,; dress, check jacket torn across breast, black trousers, check cap. A labourer. Warrant issued. KENT. 24.— Chatham ( County).— For deserting their wives and children— EDWIN CHARLES HUGHES, age 42, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache brown, eyes grey, slightly pock- marked, scar centre of forehead ; dress, usually dark tweed jacket and vest, cord trousers, cap. A labourer. JOHN JAMES SHORE, age 45, height 6 ft. 11 in., complexion sallow, hair, whiskers and moustache light brown, tip of nose slightly on one side, teeth discoloured, one little finger bent, walks erect; dress, tweed coat, check vest, brown trousers, black soft hat. LANARKSHIRE. 25.— Glasgow ( City).— For contravention of the Debtors' ( Scotland) Act of 1890— ALEXANDER CROMBIE, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion swarthy, hair black, moustache and eyes dark; usually wears a black suit and silk hat. A factor and merchant; native of Dalmellington, Ayr- shire. It is believed he will endeavour to go abroad. Warrant issued. LANCASHIRE. 26.— Leigh ( County).— For stealing, 24th ult., a lady's silver watch, double cases, hour hand missing, dial cracked, silver chain, ball at ends and in centre, with tassel attached, and £ 1— EDWARD HAWES, age about 22, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, fuli face, hair light brown, clean shaved ; dress, black worsted suit, brown cap, blue muffler, lace boots. R." painted on front, lid fastened with iron rod, containing 2 blue shirts, makers " Buttress," on neck band; 2 white tennis shirts, marked " F. W. R." or " T " in red under collar; 1 white silk handkerchief, marked " C. T. R." ; 2 cotton, marked " Lister"; 2 stand- up collars, marked " F. W. R."; 2 pairs red and brown mixture socks, marked " C. T. R."; 2 towels, marked " C. T. R." and a groom's blue cloth coat and vest— JAMES HAR- RISS, age 23, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion fair, clean shaved, slightly deaf, tattooed on both arms ( butterfly, dagger and Nellie on one), 2 rings on second right finger ; dress, light mixture jacket and vest, blue mixture cloth breeches, brown leather gaiters. A stableman ; has been a driver in the Artillery. He came to Hunstanton with Julian's Circus about 3 months ago, and has been employed by a cab proprietor. OXFORDSHIRE. 30.— Banbury ( County).— For stealing, about 14th August last, at Bloxham, a lady's gold ring, set 3 small stones— FRANK R. COZENS, age 22, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair light, clean shaved, upper front teeth missing, scar on forehead ; dress, navy blue suit. A groom ; native of Bath. Sutton, Banbury. 31.— Woodstock ( County).— For embezzling £ 6 5s., 11th ult.— WILLIAM JAMES EDWARDS ( supposed false), age about 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion tanned, hair black, heavy moustache dark brown, eyes dark, speaks with Irish accent; dress, dark jacket, dark corduroy trousers, grey cap, wide welt boots, triangular patch on heel of left. Seeks employment at Catholic institutions as cook, gardener, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Sorrell, Woodstock. SHROPSHIRE. 32.— Oswestry ( County).— For attempted rape, 22nd ult.— CHARLES DAVIES, Office No. 3112- 98, age 27, height 4 ft. llf in. ( without boots), com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, slight moustache dark, eyes grey, mole left upper arm, 3 on stomach, scar back left forearm, right of forehead, under right nipple, coal mark left palm ; dress, dark brown cloth jacket and vest,, light cloth trousers, light grey peak cap, strong lace boots. A fitter, native of Newtown, Montgomeryshire. May be found travelling the country and sleeping in outbuildings. Has been previously convicted. Liberated from Shrewsbury prison 20th ult. Warrant issued. 33.— Oswestry ( County).— For stealing, 15th ult., a Paisley shawl and £ 16— MARY ANN ED- WARDS, age 48, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion sallow, broad face, hair ( turning grey) brown, hairy upper lip, eyes ( cast in left) grey, cut mark left side of head, speaks slowly, shuffling gait, addicted to drink; dress, dark dress, and bonnet trimmed red flowers. A housekeeper; is believed to be a native of Herefordshire or Worcestershire. Previously con- victed of felony at Wellington, Shrewsbury, Kidder- minster and Worcester. CITY OP LONDON. 35.— Woodcut portrait and description of CLAUD VAUTIN, late of 66, Old Broad Street, and Upper Hamilton Terrace, St. John's Wood, whose appre- hension is sought for fraud to a large amount, age 44, height 5 ft. 10 in. to 6 ft., weight| about 15 stone, complexion florid, hair and small side whiskers dark, moustache light brown, swelling over right eye, irregular teeth ; well dressed. SHROPSHIRE. 36.— Wellington ( County).— For embezzlement on 16th September last at Newport— FRANK VICKERS NEEDHAM, age 44, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache brown, turning grey, eyes grey, has lost all his teeth except four; dress, dark cloth suit, slate coloured overcoat, flat top black hard felt hat. A clerk and dispenser. Has friends in London, Hull and Bridlington. May assume the name of Roberts. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Chief Supt. STAFFORDSHIRE. 37.— Brierley Hill ( County) .— For embezzling £ 10, 10th May, 1898— HAROLD LOUIS DA\, age about 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair, whiskers and moustache dark brown ( turning slightly grey), eyes blue, wears glasses; dress, black frock coat, black vest, light cloth trousers, generally carries an umbrella.
