C. 654, convicted at Omagh, County Tyrone Assizes, on 8th March, 1893, for larceny from the person, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude:... 62 years of age, can read and write; is a Roman Catholic; is a widower, with one child ; i § a dealer ; prison trade tailor; was born at Granard; resided before conviction at Belfast, where his friends reside ; gray hair, blue eyes, gray eyebrows, regular nose and mouth, fresh complexion, round visage, stout make, 5 feet inches high, bald, lost several front teeth, small scars on right eyebrow, corner of right eye, and right cheek, whitlow- mark on first finger left hand. This man was releasod from Maryboro' prison on 25th March last, on sccond order of licence, and went to Armagh, which place he left on 28th of same month, stating that he was going to Belfast; he did not re- port himself there, although it has been ascertained that he was there for a time, and his present where- abouts are unknown. If arrested he should be dealt with under 34 and 35 Vic., s. 5, c. 112, as amended by Penal Servitude Act, 1891. 1st July, 1898. ( 612 H. c.) Young Offender, JOHN M'DOWELL, not arrested. Hue- and- Cry, 10th May. ( 601 H. C.) Carlow. Description of " MAJOR" H. P. TRENCH ( name probably false), native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 28th July, 1898, in the town of Carlow, barony of Carlow, parish of Carlow, obtained by false pretences a sum of £ 10 from Mr. Edwin Boake, Merchant, of Tullow- street, Carlow :— Smart military appearance, clean shaved except for reddish moustache; blue or gray eyes, regular nose, fair rather bronzed complexion, long thin face, medium make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 35 years of age, light sandy hair ; wore a white straw hat, coat, trowscrs and vest of dark flannel with white stripe; occupation unknown, said he was Major in the army. Also wanted for similar offence committed in county Louth, see under that county. Warrant for arrest in hands of District Inspector at Carlow. Carlow, 4th August, 1898. ( 532 22 c.— 7135 5). Cork. Description of FREDERICK THOMPSON, native of London, who stands charged with having, on the Ist August, 189S, in the barony of Cork, parish of Holy Trinity, broken into the house of William Corcoran, 8, North Main- street, Cork, and stolen therefrom the sum of £ 290 in gold :— Has an impediment in his speech, is a returned American, will endeavour to emigrate, brown eyes, sharp pointed nose, dark complexion, round face, rr edium make, 5 feet 5 inches high, about 85 years of age, dark hair; wore a hard hat, dark serge coat and vest; is a painter. Warrant issued and in the hands of District Inspector, Cork, South. Cork, South, 25th August, 1898. ( 53595 c 72066). Description of DENIS CRONIN, native of Gloun- thane, near Mallow, who stands charged with having, on the 4th August, 1898, in the barony of Cork, parish of St. Anne's. Shandon, unlawfully and felon- iously stolen and made away with five pigs, the pro- perty ot his master, Cornelius Smyth, ot Glounthane, such pigs being value for about £ 7: — High cheek bones, tront teeth overlapping ; small dark eyes, regular nose, sallow complexion, square face, medium make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 28 years of age, dark hair; wore a gray tweed cap, coat, trowsers, and vest; is a labourer. Warrant issued. Cork North, 17th August, 1898. ( 53438 c.— 71763). Description of a MAN, unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 18th July, 1898, in the barony of Cork, parish of Currykippane, stolen three heifers ( since recovered), value about £ 28, the pro- perty of Timothy Connors, of Cloghean, and sold the cattle at Donoughmore fair, on 19th July, 1898, for £ 22 :— Thin hardy appearance, dark complexion, slight make, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, about 40 years of age ; wore a dark coat and trowsers, old and worn ; looked like u blacksmith or shoemaker. Description of a MAN, unknown, who stands charged with having, on the night of 20th July, 1898, in the barony of Muskerry East, parish of Ahabul- logue, stolen an ass's cart, the property of Daniel Dennehy, from his yard at Ahavrin, Coachford:— Sandy complexion, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, about 60 years of age, sandy tarntDg gray hair, sandy side whiskers turning gray, chin shaven; wore a black coat and trowsers; is a tinker or rag- gatherer. Accompanied by a woman, about 50 years of age, long freckled face, who wore an old gray shawl. Warrant issued. Ballincollig, 30th July, 1898. ( 53197 C.— 71259.) MICHAEL HINCHIN ( sheep stealing), not arrested. Hue- and- Cry, 20th May. ( 52014 0— 68918.) JOHN DOWNEY ( indecent assault), mt arrested. Hue- and- Cry, 15th April. ( 51423 o.— 67809^ Donegal. Particulars relative to Convict WILLIAM DOHERTY, otherwise MICHAEL FARRELL, otherwise MICHAEL FARNAN, otherwise JAMES HAMILTON, C. 791, convicted at Letterkenny, county Donegal, at Letterkenny Quarter Sessions, on 19th October, 1894, for larceny and previous con- viction, and 83ntenced to 5 years' penal servitude:— Present age 61 years ; can read and write ; is a Roman Catholic ; widower j has two children ; is a labourer; prison trade labourer; born at Strabane ; resided before conviction at Lifford, county Donegal; his friends reside at Glenties, county Donegal; gray hair, gray eyes, brown eyebrows, cocked nose, regular mouth, sallow complexion, round visage, proportionate make, 5 feet 7 inches high, small cocked nose, cut mark centre of forehead, flat ankles, sma'l lump on forehead and left cheek, and larga burn- mark on right side. This man was released from Maryborough Prison on 19th July last, and went to reside at Moville, county Donegal, but he left there on the 11th instant, without notifying the Police, and his present whereabouts are not known; during the time he was at Moville, he stopped at a lodging- house without being employed at any work. If arrested he should be dealt with uader 34 and 35 Vic., s. 5, c. 112, as amended by Penal Servitude Act, 1891. 22nd August, 1898. ( 624. tr. c.) Down. Description of THOMAS JOHNSTON, alias THOMAS TAYLOR ( naaies believed fictitious), who stands charged with having, on the 16th August, 1898, in the barouy of The Lordship of Newry, parish of Newry, obtained money under false pretences from Alice Lavery, near Newry:— Bad teeth ia front of mouth, black eyes, regular nose, yellow complexion, full face, slight make, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, about 22 years of age, black hair ; wore a dark bro vn cap, blue jacket, trowsers and vest; is a carpenter's apprentice. His modu? operandi is to fiad out the name of some person in tho locality and represeat to them that he is in the employment ol certain people, obtain lodgings, borrow money, stating that he has money in tho Post Office, and will pay them whan he draws it. Warrant in the hands of the District Inspector, R I. C., Newry. Newry. 2( lth August, 1898. ( 5350So.— 71897). Dublin. Description of a MAN, name and native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the night of the 27th, or morniog of the 23th July, 1898, THE POLIdfi GAZETTE, OR HUE- AND- CRY, AUGUST 23, 1898. in the barony of Coolock, parish of Kilbarrack, stolen two heifers, the property of Mary Collins :— Sallow complexion, slight mate, 5 feet 5 or 6 inche9 high, about 45 or 50 years of age, dark hair, and beard cut short, tinged with gray, and growing up close to eyes ; wore a hard black hat, dinged in crown like Trilby, and long black coat. Is supposed to be the same person described in Hue- and- Cry, 27th May, 9th June, and 21st July, 1898, under Dublin County. Clontarf, 29th July, 1898. ( 53150 c. - 71174). Description of a MAN, name and native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 14th July, 1898, in the barony of Nethercross, parish of Kilsillaghan, stolen a heifer calf, value £ 4, from Mrs. Margaret Chapman :— Very dark complexion round face, stout make, 5 feet, 8 inches high, abou, 45 or 50 years of age, dark hair turning grey ; wore beard and whiskers clipped short, turning grey ; wore a round, hard, black hut, very long, black overcoat, looks like a tramp. Is supposed to be the same person described in Hue- and- Cry of 23rd May, and 9th June, 1898, under Dublin county. Warrant issued and in the hands of the Sergeant at AVard. Lncan, 21st July, 1898, ( 53010 a— 70842.) Description of a MAN, unknown, but who gave fictitious name Patrick Byrne, of Kill- of- the- Grange, who stands charged with having, on the 5th May, 1898, in the barony of Uppercross, parish of Tallaght, stolen three calves, the property of Catherine Healy, which calves have been since recovered :— Brown eyes, dark complexion, thin face, slight make, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, about 40 or 45 years of age, short side whiskers, rest of face shaved, apparently has a weak voice ; wore a black hard hat, dark coat, brown trowsers, and dark vest ( jacket made) carried a dust coat on his arm. This man may be the same as the one described in Hue and- Cry of 23rd ult., under the name of Kelly ( county Dublin). The calves were de- scribed in Hue- and- Cry of 13th May, 1898. ( 51730 c.— 68413). DAVID LEAHY ( setting fire to dwelling, A-.), not arrested. Hue- andCry of 12th April. ( 51381 c.— 67737). JEREMIAH MULCAHY and THOMAS MUL CAHY ( intimidation by firing shots), Hue- and- Cry, 10th June, net arrested. ( P0824 c.— 66622). Galway. Description of THOMAS DOLAN ( mother's sur- name Howard^, native of Ballinasloe, who stands charged with having, on the 10th day of July, 1898, in the barony of Clonmacnocn, parish of Rilclooney, unlawfully and carnally known one Margaret Kerrigan, 15 years of age :— Rather long neck, gray eyes, rather short nope, fair complexion, short face, medium mako, 5 feet 5 inches high, about 20 years ot age, fair hair; wore an electric blue suit and a gray cap ; is a coach painter. He may be found employed in some coach factory. Warrant hat been issued and is in the hands of District Inspector, Ballinasloe. Ballinasloe, 18th August, 1898. ( 52945 c.— 71818). MICHAEL HEGGINS ( who left his home), de- scribed in Hue and- Cry of 10th June, has not yet been found. ( 597— H. C ) Kildare. Description of Dr. THOMAS JENKENS, native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 11th day of Jnly, ' 898, at Monasterevan in the barony of Offaly West, parish of monasterevan, obtained a sum of £ 2 by false pretences, from Rev. Hugh M'Keag, of 67, Heytesbury- street, Dublin, by wiring to him in the name of Mr. T. H. Seale, and signing receipt for same in name of T. H. Seale :— Had right wrist bandaged as result of a bicycle accident, brown eyes, regular no> e, florid complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 33|| years of age, brown hair ; wore a white chip hat with red band, brown coat, brown knicker trowsers, brown vest; is supposed to belong to a bogus firm of Peat Fuel Manufacturers. Name is supposed t > be fictitious. Speaks fluently, has a red card case in his possession on which is written inside " Please admit Thomas Jenkins, Royal Hospital, Edinburgh." Warrant issued. Kildare, 24th July, 1898. ( 53047c.— 71013.) Louth. Description of PATRICK RICE ( mother's surname Kane), native of Fathom Upper, county Armagh, who stands charged with having, on the night of 10th A ugust, 1898, in the barony of Lower Dundalk, parii- h of Carlingford. stabbed Peter Cull, on right temple, with a penknife:— Grey eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 30 years of age, dart bair ; wore a black coat, bluish tweed trowsers, black vest t is a labourer A Warrant has been issued, and is in the bands of the District Inspector R. I. C., Dundalk. Dundalk, 14th August, 1898. ( 53383c 71666). Description of E. T. FRENCH, alias Major STIRLING, 16th Lancers, who stands charged with having, on the 3Cth July, 1898, in the barony of Upper Dundalk. parish of Dundalk, obtained from the National Bank £ 10, by presenting a worthless cheque signed " E. T. French, Major." and falsely representing himself as belonging to the ttb Inniskilling Dragoons: Blue or gray eyes, long nose, sandy complexion, full face, stout make, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, about 40 years of age, lair hair ; wore a straw hat. dark coat, trowsers and vest, all one pattern and having a white thread running down it at intervals, and yellow boots ; military appearance ard good address ; sp ke with an English accent. Also wanted for similar offence com- mitted in county Carlow, see under that county. Warrant issued Dundalk, 3rd August, 1898. ( 53222 c.— 71319). Meath. Description of JAMES BOURNES, native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 21st August. 1898, in the barony of Upper Slane, parish ot Stackallen, stolen one suit ot clothes, the property of Lieutenant Henry Osborne, from the Militia Camp, at Stackallen:— Slightly pockpitted, has stoppage in speech, heavy brown moustache, hazel eyes, fresh complexion, shaved face, medium make, 5 feet Si inches high, about 30 years of ago, brown hair ; wore a gray tweed coat, trowsers, and vest is a groom and militiaman Suoposed to be wearing the clothes of the foregoing description; value for about £ 2. Warrant issued. Navan, 24th August, 1893. ( 53561 c. - 72015.) Sligo. THOMAS BRACKEN ( serious assault), not- arrested. Hue- and- Cry of 29th April. ( 51482 c.— 67930). Tipperary. Description of TWO MEN, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having, on the £ 0th day of August, 1898, in the barony of eliogarty, parish of Holycross, robbed one Thonas Bannon, of the sum of five shillings ( 5s.):— 1. Mark of an old cut, about two inches long, on left check, fair complexion small thin face, slight make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 20 years of age, light sandy hair; wore a gray cap, gray sack coat, gray trowsers and vest, wore bad boots. 2. Sunken jaws, dark swarthy completion, lorg thin face, medium make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 30 years of age, dark hair ; wore a soft black hat, Ions; black coat, black trowsers and vest, coat much worn, and torn at elbows and shouiders, wore bad boots. Description of MICHAEL HOGAN, nativo of Killenaule, who stands charged with having, on the 5th day of July, 1898, at Thurles, in the barony of Eliogarty, parish of Thurles, uttered and presented for payment at the Murster and Leinster Bank, with intent to defraud, a chequo tor £ 20 sterling, purporting to be signed by one John Maher:— Kather smart appearance, blue or gray e) es, short thick nose, daik complexion, round face, medium make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 24 yeaTSof age, brown hair; wore a tweed cap, brown tweed coat, trowsers and vest; is a labourer. ( 52706c.— 70229) Description of PATRICK BYRNE ( supposed fictitious), who stands charged with having, on the night of 10th instant, in tbe barony of Dunboyne, parish of Dunboyne, stolen four heifers, which he sold at Smithfield Market to Messrs. M'Donnell and Matthews ( through Salesmaster Delaney), the property of Matthew Bruton, a cattle exporter to Newcastle- cn- Tyne:— Brown eyes, pale complexion, thin face, medium make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 45 years of age, dark hair; wore a short black beard and moustache; a round black jerry hat, long black over- coat, tweed trowsers and vest, tan boots; believed to be same person described under county Dublin, 9/ 6/ 98. Warrant issued and in bands of Sergeant of Dunboyne. Dunshaughlin, 14th August, 1898. ( 53377 c.— 71654). Kilkenny Description of THOMAS FLOOD, native of Rath- burton, Ballywilliam, county Wexford, who stands charged with having, on the 19th May, 1898, at Garranabehy, in the barony of Ida, parish of Rosbercon, stolen a bicycle, the property of John Graingel, which has since been recovered :— shaves all the face except moustache, which is black, brown eyes, thin nose, pale sallow complexion, long thin face, slight make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 26 years of age, black hair; wore a black cap, light gray tweed coat, trowsers and vest ; is a farm la) ourer. Warrant in hands of the Ser- geant at Rosbercon Thomastown, 8ih July, 1898. ( 52843 c,— 70501.) MAN, believed to be David Murray ( larceny of a cart), not arrested. Hue- and- Cry, 10th June. Description of EMILY KERR, native of Glenda- vagh, county Tyrone, who. on the 29th Jnly, 1898, in the barony of Trough, parish of Donagb, left the house of her employer, John Ferguson, and has not since been heard of. and it is feared she may have met with foul play:— Gray or bluo eyes, regular nose, sandy com- plexion, long face, medium make, 4 feet 10 inches high, about 16 years of age, red bair; wore a sailor hat ( straw) with black band, low shoes, black stockings, and a gray dress ; is a servant. Monaghan, 25th August, 1893. ( 625- H. c.) Roscommon. Description of TIMOTHY BEIRNE, ( mother's surname Shanley), native of Derrylow, who stands charged with having, on the 9th day of May, 1898, in V tbe barony of Boyle, parish of Killukin, assaulted Patrick Feely, by throwing a piece cf iron which struck Feely on the head. Beirne was on bail, but failed to appear at Croghan Petty Sessions, on 18th July, 1898, at the hearing of the case :— Cut- mark on top of fore- head caused by a blow received 9th May, 1898, grey eyes, cocked nose, fresh complexion, regular face, stout make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 20 yeirs oi age ; wore a grey tweed cap, blue serge trowsers, and vest; is a labourer. A warrant for this nan's arrest is in the hands of the District Inspector at Boyle. Boyle, 18th July, 1898. ( 52999 c— 70828.) Westmeath. MARY A. M'GRAIL ( abandoning infant child), not arrested. Hue- and- Cry, 13th May. ( 5IP97 <\— 6P6P6.) Wexford JOHN NOLAN ( indecent assault), described in Hue- and. Cry cf 10th June, not arrested. ( 50237 c 65184). Wicklow. Description of WILLIAM RICE ( mother's surname Murphy), who stands charged with having, on the night of I6' h or morning of 17th August, 1898, in the barony of Rathdown. parish of Powerscourt, broken into the tool- house of Glencree Reformatory and ab- stracted therefrom a number of stonecutters' tools, said tools having been since recovered in a Dublin Pawn Office :— Shaved face, except a moustache, which is dark, wiry appearance; grey eyes, ordinary nose, dark complexion, thin face, medium mako, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 33 years of age, dark tair turning a little grey; lost some buttons from waistcoat which were found where theft was committed; is a stonecutter. He was discharged from Kilmainham Gaol on 15th August, 1898, after a term of 6 months, for cattle stealing at Kilakee, county Dublin. Bray, 28th August, 1898. ( 53635 c.— 72139). Licensed convict THOMAS MOORE ( failing to report), not arrested Hue- and- Cry, 10th May. ( 51823 c 68568.) DUBLIN METIIOPOLITAN POLICE. G Division. Description of JAMES WARD, who stands charged with having embezzled the sum of 13s. 6d. on lst June last, which he received at Kingstown fcr and on account of his employer, Mr. George Price, who trades as " Frederick Vodrey," Delph and China Merchant, 23, Moore- street, Dublin :— He is about 32 years of age. about feet high, stout make, round red face, thick lips, fair hair, slight sandy moustache, rest of face shived; dressed in a brown tweed suit, reefer jacket, black jerry bat; may he wearing a short dust coat. This man left here on 13th inst. and is supposed to have gone to Aberdeen ; he had previously been employed in a shipbuilding yard in Glasgow painting shi|. s, and may now feek some - imilar work. Warrant is in the hands of Superintendent Lanktree, Detective Department, Exchange Court, Dublin, 26th, August, 1898. ( 626 u. c.) Description of MARY KELLY who stands charged with having, on 25th day of July, 1898, at Berkeley- road, City of Dublin, wilfully abandoned her male infant, aged nine days, in a manner likely to cause it injury to its health :— S- he is about 26 or 28 years of age, tall and thin, dark hair and complexion, dressed in black cloth tight- fittirg jacket, dark green skirt, dark woollen wrapper, white sailor hat and black band. She is alleged to be a native of Gormanstown, county \ THE POLICE GAZETTE, OR HUE AtfD- CRY, AUGUST 30, 1898. Meath, and she stated she knew the town of Dunleer well. She may be found at Drogheda, Balbriggan, Skenies, or some of the coast towns about there. Warrant is in the hands o! Superintendent Lanktree. Wanted here on sheriff's warrant, charged with theft of £ 20 ( consisting of 40 half sovereigns), committed at Barrheid, at 2 p. m., on Wednesday, 17th August, 1898 :— JAMES M'LEAN, a pawnbroker's asiis ant, 19 years of age, about 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, medium build, thin face, rather high forehead, dark eyes, sallow complexion, is a native of Glasgow, and speaks with Scotch accent; supposed to have a scar under his chin on the left side ; dressed when last seen in brownish tweed cap, with a curly nap on surface, black corded clotli jacket suit, white front with collar attached, dark tie, and brown lacing boots; had in his posses- sion a silver Geneva watch, a silver Albert chain, curb pattern, and a silver badge as pendant. During the past two years accused was an assistant in a pawnbroking office at Barrhead, and resided with John Mallon, his step- father, at 140, Gallogate- street, Glasgow. He committed the theft during the tem- porary absence of the manager, and immediately after- wards absconded. He has been six years in the pawn- broking business, and may seek similar employment. Police officers are requested to have search and enquiry made for accused at pawnbroking establish- ments, salesrooms, and other likely places, where he may seek employment, at shipping offices ( as he may endeavour to leave the country), and, if found, arrest or should any trace, however slight, be obtained, to communicate with CHAS. Description of an ass, the property of James Mooney, which it is alleged was stolen from the lauds of Skerry, parish of Rosenallis, barony of Tinnahinch, on the night of the 19th August, or morning of the 20th August, 1898, viz:— A low white gelding ass, strong appearance, long tail, short thick snout, very light in colour, and heavy body, in good condition, one hind shoe off, about 8 or 9 years' old, and value for about £ 2 ; may have old mark of straddle on offside of back.
