C. 654, convicted at Omagh, County Tyrone Assizes, on 8th March, 1893, for larceny from the person, arid sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude:... 62 years of age, can read and write; is a Roman Catholic ; is a widower, with one child ; is a dealer ; prison trade tailor; was born at Granard ; resided before conviction at Belfast, where his friends reside ; gray hair, blue eyes, gray eyebrows, regular nose and mouth, fresh complexion, round visage, stout make, 5 feet inches high, bald, lost several front teeth, small scars on right eyebrow, corner of right eye, and right cheek, whitlow- mark on first finger left hand. This man was released from Maryboro* prison on 25th March last, on second order of licence, and went to Armagh, which place he left on 28th of same month, stating that he was going to Belfast; he did not re- port himself there, although it has been ascertained that he was there for a time, and his present where- abouts are unknown. If arrested he should be dealt with under 34 and 35 Vic., s. 5, c. 112, as amended by Penal Servitude Act, 1891. 1st July, 1898. ( 612 H. c.) Young Offender, JOHN M'DOWELL, not arrested. Hue- and- Cry, 10th May. ( 601 H. C.) Carlow. Description of " MAJOR" H. P. TRENCH name probably false), native place unknown, who stands eharged with having, on the 28th July, 1898, in the town of Carlow, barony of Carlow, parish of Carlow, obtained by false pretences a sum of £ 10 from Mr. Edwin Boake, Merchant, of Tullow- street Carlow :— Smart military appearance, clean shaved except for reddish moustache; blue or gray eyes, regular nose, fair rather bronzed complexion, long thin face, medium make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 35 years of age, light sandy hair ; wore a white straw hat, coat, trowsers and vest of dark flannel with white stripe ; occupation unknown, said he was Major in the army. Also wanted for similar offence committed in county Louth, see under that county. Warrant for arrest in hands of District Inspector at Carlow. Carlow, 4th August, 1898. ( 53222 c.— 71355). Cork. Description of DENIS CRONIN, native of Gloun- thane, near Mallow, who stands charged with having, on the 4th August, 1898, in the barony of Cork, parish of St. Anne's, Shandon, unlawfully and felon- iously stolen and made away with five pigs, the pro- perty of his master, Cornelius Smyth, of Glounthane, such pigs being value for about £ 7 :— High cheek bones, front teeth overlapping ; small dark eyes, regular nose, sallow complexion, square face, medium make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 28 years of age, dark hair; wore a gray tweed cap, coat, trowsers, and vest; is a labourer. Description of a MAN, unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 18th July, 1898, in the barony of Cork, parish of Currykippane, stolen three heifers ( since recovered), value about £ 28, the pro- perty of Timothy Connors, of Clogheen, and sold the cattle at Dououghmore fair, on 19th July, 1898, for £ 22;— Thin hardy appearance, dark complexion, slight make, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, about 40 years of age ; wore a dark coat and trowsers, old and worn ; looked like a blacksmith or shoemaker. Description of a MAN, unknown, who stands charged with having, on the night of 20th July, 1898, in the barony of Muskerry East, parish of Ahabul- logue, stolen an ass'* cart, the property of Daniel Dennehy, from his yard at Ahavrin, Coachford :— Sandy complexion, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, about 60 years of age, sandy tarning gray hair, sandy side whiskers turning gray, chin shaven; wore a black coat and trowsers; is a tinker or rag- gatherer, Accompanied by a woman, about 50 years of age, long freckled face, who wore an old gray shawl. JOHN DOWNEY ( indecent assault), not arrested. Hue and- Cry, 15th April. ( 51423 o.— 67809.1 Donegal. Particulars relative to Convict WILLIAM DOHERTY, otherwise MICHAEL FARRELL, otherwise MICHAEL FARNAN, otherwise JAMES HAMILTON, C. 794, convicted at Letterkenny, county Donegal, at Letterkenny Quarter Sessions, on 19th October, 1994, for larceny and previous con- viction, and sentence 1 to 5 years' penal servitude:— Present age 61 years ; can read and write ; is a Roman Catholic ; widower ; has two children ; is a labourer ; prison trade labourer; born at Strabane ; resided before conviction at Lifford, county Donegal; his friends reside at Glenties, county Donegal; gray hair, gray eyes, brown eyebrows, cocked nose, regular mouth, sallow complexion, round visage proportionate make, 5 feet 7 inches high, small cocked nose, cut mark centre of forehead, flat ankles, sma'l lump on forehead an/) left cheek, and large burp- mark on right side. This man was released from Maryborough Prison on 19th July last, and went to reside at Moville, county Donegal, but he left there on tbe 14th instant, without notifying the Police, and his present whereabouts are not known; during the time he was at Moville, he stopped at a lodging- house without being employed at any work. If arrested he should be dealt with under 34 and 35 Vic., s. 5, c. 112, as amended by Penal Servitude Act, 1891. 22nd August, 1898. ( 624. B. C.) Down. Description of THOMAS JOHNSTON, alias THOMAS TAYLOR ( names believed fictitious), who stands charged with having, on tiie 16th August, 1898, in the barony of The Lordship of Newry, parish of Newry, obtained money under false pretences from Alice Lavery, near Newry:— Bad teeth ia f* ont of mouth, black eyes, regular nose, yellow complexion, lull face, slight make, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, about 22 years of age. black hair ; wore at dark brown o tp, blue jacket, trowsers and vest; is a carpenter's apprentice. His modus operandi is to find out the name of some person in the locality and represent to them that he is in the employment of certain people, obtain lodgings, borrow money, stating that he has money in the Post Office, and will pay them whan he draws it. Warrant in the hands of the District Inspector, R I. C., Newry. Ne wry, 20th August, 1898. ( 5350S o.— 71897). D. ublin. Description of a MAN, name and native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the night of the 27th, or morning of the 28th July, 1898, in the barony of Coolock, parish of Kilbirrack, stolen two heifers, the property of Mary Collins :— Sallow complexion, slight make, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, about 45 or 50 years of age, dark hair, and beard cut short, tinged with gray, and growing up close to eyes ; wore a hard black hat, dinged in crown like Trilby, and long black coat. Is supposed to be the same person described in Hue- and- Cry, 27th May, 9th June, and 21st July, 1898, under Dublin County. Clontarf, 29th July, 1898. ( 53150 c.— 71174). Description of a MAN, name and native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 14th July, 1898, in the barony of Nethercros?, parish of Kilsallaghan, stolen a heifer calf, value £ 4, from Mrs. Margaret Chapman :— Very dark complexion round face, stout make, 5 feet, 8 inches high, about 45 or 50 years of age, dark hair turning grey; wore THE POLIdfi GAZETTE, OR HUE- AND- CRY, AUGUST 23, 1898. beard and whiskers clipped short, turning grey ; wore a round, hard, black hat, very long, black overcoat, looks like a tramp. Is supposed to be the same person described in Hue- and- Cry of 23rd May, and 9th June,' 1898, under Dublin county. Warrant issued and in the hands of the Sergeant at Ward. Lucan, 21st July, 1898, ( 53010 o.— 70842.) Description of a MAN, unknown, but who gave fictitious name Patrick Byrne, of Kill- of- the- Grange, who stands charged with having, on the 5th May, 1898, in the barony of Uppercross, parish of Tallaght, stolen three calves, the property of Catherine Healy, which calves have been since recovered :— Brown eyes, dark complexion, thin face, slight make, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, about 40 or 45 years of age, short side whiskers, rest of face shaved, apparently has a weak voice ; wore a black hard hat, dark coat, brown trowsers, and dark vest ( jacket made), carried a dust coat on his arm. This man may be the same as the one described in Hue and- Cry of 23rd ult., under the name of Kelly ( county Dublin). The calves were de- scribed in Hue- and- Cry of 13th May, 1898. Warrant is in hands of District Inspector at Dundtum. Dundrum, 9th June, 1898. ( 51850 c.— 69619.) Man, stated to be named KELLY ( cattle stealing), not arrested. Hue- and- Cry of 27th May. ( 52027 c.— 69131.) Galway. Description of THOMAS DOLAN ( mother's sur- name Howard, native of Ballinasloe, who stands charged with having, on the 10th day of July, 1898, in the barony of Clonmacnoon, parish of Rilclooney, unlawfully and carnally known one Margaret Kerrigan, 15 years of age :— Rather long neck, gray eyes, rather short nose, fair complexion, short face, medinm make, 5 feet 5 inches high, about 20 years ot age, fair hair; wore an electric blue suit and a gray cap ; is a coach painter. He may be found employed in some coach factory. Warrant has been issued and is in the handi of District Inspector, Ballinasloe. Ballinasloe, 18th August, 1898. ( 52945 C.— 71818). MICHAEL HEGGINS ( who left his home), de- scribed in Hue and- Cry of 10th June, has not yet been found. ( 597— H. c.) Kildare. Description of Dr. THOMAS JENKENS, native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the lltb day of July, 1898, at Monasterevan. in the. barony of Offaly West, parish of Monasterevan, obtained a sum of £ i by false pretences, from Rev. Hugh M'Keag, of 67, Heytesbury- street, Dublin, by wiring to him in the name of Mr. T. H. Seale, and signing receipt for same in name of T. H. Seale:— Had right wrist bandaged as result of a bicycle accident, brown eyes, regular nose, florid complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 33 years of age, brown hair; wore a white chip hat with red band, brown coat, brown knicker trowsers, brown vest; is supposed to belong to a bogus firm of Peat Fuel Manufacturers. Name is supposed to be fictitious. Speaks fluently, has a red card case in his possession on which is written inside " Please admit Thomas Jenkins, Royal Hospital, edinburgh." Warrant issued. Kildare, 24th July, 1898. ( 53047 c.— 71013.) Kilkenny. Description of THOMAS FLOOD, native of Rath- burton, Ballywilliam, county Wexford, who stands charged with having, on the 19th May, 1898, at Garranabehy, in the barony of Ida, parish of Rosbercon, stolen a bicycle, the property of John Graingel, which has since been recovered :— shaves all the face except moustache, which is black, brown eyes, thin nose, pale sallow complexion, Ion!* thin face, slight make, 5 feet 7 inches high, aoout ' i6 years of age, black hair ; wore a black cap, light gray tweod coat, trowsers and vest ; is a farm labourer. Warrant in hands of the Ser- geant at Rosbcrcon Thomastown, 8th July, 1898. ( 52843 c— 70501.) * MAN, believed to be David Murray ( larceny of a cart), not arrested. Hue- atid- Cry, 10th June. ( 51708 c 69467). WALTER WALSH ( indecent assault), not arrested. Hue- and Cry, 7th June. ( 52279 c— 69448.) | of Carlingford, stabbed Peter Cull, on right temple, with a penknife:— Grey eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 30 years of age, dark hair; wore a black coat, bluish tweed trowsers, black vest i is a labourer. A Warrant has been issued, and is in the hands of the District Inspector R. I. G., Dnndalk. Dundalk, 14th August, 1898. ( 53383 c 71666). Description of E. T. FRENCH, alias Major STIRLING, 16th Lancers, who stands charged with having, on the 30th July, 1898, in the barony of Upper Dundalk, parish of Dundalk, obtained from the National Bank £ 10, by presenting a worthless cheque signed " E. T. French, Major." and falsely representing himself as belonging to the fctb Inniskilling Dragoons: Blue or gray eyes, long nose, sandy complexion, full lace, stout make, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, about 40 years of age, fair hair ; wore a straw hat. dark coat, trowsers and vest, all one pattern and having a white thread runoing down it at intervals, and yelloW'boots; military appearance ar> d good address ; sp ke with an English accent. JEREMIAH MULCAHY and THOMAS MUL CAHY ( intimidation by firing shots), Hne- and- Cry, IOth June, not arrested. ( 50824 c.— 66622). Louth. Description of PATRICK RICE ( mother's surname Kane), native of Fathom Upper, county Armagh, who stands charged with having, on the night of 10th A ugust, 1898, in the barony of Lower Dundalk, parish Meat. h Description of PATRICK BYRNE ( supposed fictitious), who stands charged with having, on the night of 10th instant, in the barony of Dunboyne, parish of Dunboyne, stolen four heifers, which he sold at Smithfield Market to Messrs. M'Donnell and Matthews ( through Salesmaster Delaney), the property of Matthew Bruton, a cattle exporter to Newcastle- cn- Tyne:— Brown eyes, pale complexion, thin face, medium make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 45 years of age, dark hair ; wore a short black beard and moustache; a round black jerry hat, long black over- coat, tweed trowsers and vest, tan boots ; believed to be same person described under county Dublin, 9/ 6/ 98. Warrant issued and in hands of Sergeant of Dunboyne. Dunshaughlin, 14th August, 1898. ( 53377 c— 71654). Roscommon. Description of TIMOTHY BEIRNE, ( mother's surname Shanley), native of Derrylow, who stands charged with having, on the 9th day of May, 1898, in the barony of Boyle, parish of Killukin, assaulted Patrick Feely, by throwing a piece of iron which struck Feely on the head. Beirne was on bail, but failed to appear at Croghan Petty Sessions, on 18th July, 1898, at the hearing of the case :— Cut- mark on top of fore- head caused by a blow received 9th May, 1898, grey eyes, cocked nose, fresh complexion, regular face, stout make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 20 years of age ; wore a grey tweed cap, blue serge trowsers, and vest; is a labourer. A warrant for this man's arrest is in the hands of the District Inspector at Boyle. Boyle, 18th July, 1898. ( 52999 c. — 70828.) Sligo. THOMAS BRACKEN ( serious assault), not arrested. Description of MICHAEL HOGAN, native of Killenaule, who stands charged with having, on the 5th day of July, 1898, at Thurles, in the barony of Eliogarty, parish of Thurles, uttered and presented for payment at the Munster and Leinster Bank, with intent to defraud, a cheque for 120 sterling, purporting to be signed by one John Maher :— Rather smart appearance, blue or gray eyes, short thick nose, dark complexion, round face, medium make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 24 years of age, brown hair ; wore a tweed cap, brown tweel coat, trowsers and vest; is a labourer. Warrant in the hands of the District Inspector at Cashel. Thurles, 2nd August, 1898. ( 53215 c.— 71297). Waterford. Description of HENRY J. KENNEDY, native of Dublin, who stands charged with having, on the 9th March, 1898, in the Municipal Borough, parish of Trinity Within, while acting in the capacity of clerk for the Clyde Shipping Company, embezzled the sum of £ 3, the property of his employers : Two upper front teeth decayed, clean shaved, walks heavily with a long step, generally keeps his hands in trowsers pockets ; brown eyes, regular nose, sallow complexion, oval face, stout make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 26 years of age, dark brown hair ; wore a blue serge suit; is a clerk. A warrant has been issued for his arrest, and is in the hands of the District Inspector, Waterford. Waterford, 29th June, 1898. ( 52706 c.— 70229 ) about 25 or 26 years of age, brown hair ; wore a black hat, black shawl, dark gray dress, laced boots ; believed to be a servant. Warrant issued and in hands of D. I Mullingar. Mullingar, I Oth May, 1898. ( 51897c._ 68686.) Wexford JOHN NOLAN ( indecent assault), described in Hue- and'Cry of 10th June,% ot arrested. ( 50237 65184). Wicklow. Description of licensed convict THOMAS MOORE, alias KELLY, c. 893, native of Kilcoole, ia the barony of Newcastle, parish of Kilcoole, and county Wicklow who stands charged with having failed to report himself to police, : - Cross and dots tattooed on back of left hand, scar on left cheek, cut- mark on left side of head, cross and fonr dots tattooed on back of ( right hand, also anchor ( indistinct), burn- mark on back of left hand, cross and two dots tattooed on left forearm, varicose veins on right leg, burn- mark on back of right hand, near thumb, blue eyes, fresh complexion, round face, proportionate make, 5 feet 4 J inches high, about 43 years of age, light brown hair ; is a labourer. This man was sentenced to three years' penal servi- tude at Wicklow, 29th October, 1895, and was liberated from Maryboro' Prison on 27th January, 1898, to reside at Kilcoole, county Wicklow ; he failed to report himself to the police in April last, arid his present whereabouts are unknown. Particulars relative to convict PATRICK KELLY C. 702, otherwise PATRICK BRIDE, otherwise PATRICK KEARNS, convicted Commission, on Westmeath. Description of MARY ANNE M'GRAIL, native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 6th May, 1898, in the barony of Moyashel and IWagherde. rnon, parish of Mullingar, unlawfully and wilfully abandoned and exposed her infant child Mary Anne M'Grail, about three weeks old, in a manner likely to cause such child unnecessary suffering ami injury to its health:— Upper front teeth slightly pro- jecting, full blue eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, regular face, slight make, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, at Dublin City !: rd August, 1893, for being found concealed during night with intent to commit felony, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude, from 2nd August, 1893:— 43 years ot' age on conviction; can read and write; is a Roman Catholic; single; is a labourer ; prison trade— tailor; born at Dublin, where he resided before conviction ; gray hair, gray eyes, gray eyebrows, ordinary nose, large mouth, fresh complexion, oval visage, medium make, 5 feet 6f inches high, cut- mark left temple, blue dot back of right hand at thumb, mark of sore on calf left leg. This man was released from Mountjoy Prison on the 16th inst., on 2nd order of licence. He reported himself to the D. M. Police on same date, but as he was unable to give the address of the place where he intended to reside, he was instructed to return as soon as he found a suitable lodging, but he did not do so, consequently his present whereabouts are not known. If arrested he should be dealt with under 34 and 35 Vic., s. 5, c. 112, as amended by Penal Servitude Act 1891. 18th August, 1898. ( 621 H. O.) Description of MARY KELLY who stands charged with having, on 25th day of July, 1898, at Berkeley- road, City of Dublin, wilfully abandoned her male infant, aged nine days, in a manner likely to cause it injury to its health :— She is about Q6 or 28 years of age, tall and thin, dark hair and complexion, dressed in black cloth tight fitting jacket, dark green skirt, dark woollen wrapper, white sailor hat and black band. She is alleged to be a native of Gormanstown, county Meath, and she stated she knew the toivn of Dunleer well. She may be found at Drogheda, Balbriggan, Skerries, or some of the coast towns about there. Warrant is in the hands o Superintendent Lanktree. Detective Department, Exchange- court, Dublin, 13th August, 1898. ( 619— H. C.) Particulars relative to convict WILLIAM BYRNE, otherwise EDWARD GIBBONS, otherwise PATRICK MULVEY, c. 884, convicted at Dublin General Quarter Sessions, on 11th October, 1895, for shopbreaking, and sentenced to 3 years penal servitude from 27th August, 1895:— 20 years of age on con- viction ; can read and write ; is a Roman Catholic ; single; is a sailor; prison trade labourer; born at Mullingar, county Westmeath; no fixed residence before conviction ; his friends reside in Dublin; brown \ hair, hazel eyes, brown eyebrows, regular nose, medium mouth, fresh complexion, round visage, stout make, 5 feet 3^ inches high, large scar on right hand ( outside) near wrist, scald- mark on both legs. This man reported himself to the D. M. Police on the 6th ultimo, on his releas- 3 from Kilmainham Prison, where he had undergone two months imprisonment for failing to report, and went to reside at the " Shelter," Poolbeg- street, which place he has left and his present whereabouts are not known. If arrested he should be dealt with under 34 and 35 Vic., sec. 5, cap. 112, as amended by Penal Servitude Act, 1891. 9th June, 1898. ( 608 H. C.) Licensed convict MARY ROWAN, alias CARROLL, & c. Wanted here on sheriff's warrant, charged with theft of £ 20 ( consisting of 40 half sovereigns), committed at Barrhead, at 2 p. m., on Wednesday, 17th August, 1898 :— JAMES M'LEAN, a pawnbroker's asnsant, ] 9 years of age, about 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, medium build, thin face, rather high forehead, dark eyes, sallow complexion, is a native of Glasgow, and speaks with Scotch accent; supposed to have a scar under his chin on the left side ; dressed when last seen in brownish tweed cap, with a curly nap on surface, black corded cloth jacket suit, white front with collar attached, dark tie, and brown lacing boots; had in his posses- sion a silver Geneva watch, a silver Albert chain, curb pattern, and a silver badge as pendant. During the past two years accused was an assistant in a pawnbroking office at Barrhead, and resided with John Mallon, his step- father, at 140, Gallogate- street, Glasgow. He committed the theft during the tem- porary absence of the manager, and immediately after- wards absconded. He has been six years in the pawn- broking business, and may seek similar employment. Police officers are requested to have search and enquiry made for accused at pawnbroking establish- ments, salesrooms, and other likely places, where he may seek employment, at shipping offices ( as he may endeavour to leave the country), and, if found, arrest, or should any trace, however slight, be obtained, to communicate with CHAS. Description of the following articles of wearing apparel found in possession of James O'Brien, alias Thomas Walbridge, who is at present on remand in Cork Gaol, on the charge of having stolen same, and also a donkey cart which has been identified:— 1. A white and black coloured shawl, new flowered all over with black spot on white ground, white selvage mixed with black spots near the verges, two rows of black dots on one side and three on the other side. 2. A man's coat, black colour, with slight shade of brown running through, quite nbw and apparently never worn. 3. One fine calico apron, having breast- piece and neck string attached. 7. One coarse calico apron, rather roughly sewn up. 8. One towel, double- twilled, unicorn and lion repre sented on both ends and crown between ; one small- sized gray skirt ( woman's), trimmed with brown velvet on back. 9. One military gray shirt, half- worn having name, & c., " Joseph O'Brien, Bantry, Draper," on inside of neck- band 10. Two pairs of stockings, one pair half worn, the second pair in good order, dark gray colour, red dots on thread throughout 11. Two pairs of long cycle stockings, black colour and ribbed, letter H shop- mark pinned on each stocking. 12. A few half- worn calico sheets and a piece of ticking canvas material made up for a bed- tick with blue and white stripe running through.
