All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by a not her force. 3 Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be gi ven, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 1os. per portrait, and of Is. ltd. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of n it less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, oi borough, us the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, us far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received > wt later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Xew Scotland Yard, by Postal Order or bi/ Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. R. ANDERSON, Editor. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of adver- tisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detection of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regulations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( ib) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The name and address of the person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. ( 32 and 33 Vic., cap. 24, sec. 2.) 2. No expression must be used in such an adver- tisement, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. Attention is specially directed to clause ( d), par. 1, as Police Notices are constantly being received by the Metropolitan Police without the printer's name and address, and they are consequently not distributed. NOTE.— There are 181 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force a t which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1. — D Division— Per embezzling £ 10.— H. GEORGE WALTERS, alias BEARD, age 20, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes brown, very reserved in manner; dress, black morning coat and vest, dark tweed trousers, black- hard felt hat, lace boots. A native of Marylebone, London. Warrant issued. 2. — K Division— Eor the defilement of a girl between 13 and 16— WILLIAM MOLEM, age 23, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown ; dress, dark jacket suit and peak cap. A native of West Ham. Is supposed to be travelling the counties of Essex and Kent with a piano organ, " 49 m " inside, fixed on dark truck. Warrant issued. 3.— N Division.— For embezzlement— LEON- ARD BAKER, age 22, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion ruddy, long thin face, hair light, scar centre of upper lip; dress, dark clothes, black hard felt hat. May be found at Cambridge. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 4.— For embezzlement — LEONARD A. LONG- LEY, age about 28, height 5 ft 9 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light; dress, blue serge suit, hard felt hat. An accountant. May enlist. Warrant issued. 5.— For stealing £ 106 — FRAND FISK, late of 14, King William Street, E. C., age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, thin face, hair, whiskers and moustache black ; dress, black double- breasted pilot jacket suit, black felt hat. A messenger; absconded 16th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BEDFORDSHIRE. 6.— Bedford [ Borough). — For burglary, 6th ult., and stealing 1 pair new lace boots, size 8, " Registered 87,002" on straps, " Knight of the Garter " inside tops, straight cut toe- caps, and other property ( recovered) ( see Case No. 6, 15th inst)— a man, giving the names of BELL and JAMES NEWTON, age 30 to 85, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, upright, complexion fresh, rather long features, slight moustache light, left middle finger deficient; dress, greenish plaid coat ( sleeves too short) light trousers, grey mixture cap. Stated he had served in the 3rd Hussars and had been shot through the hand. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Thody, Bedford. BERKSHIRE. — Maidenhead ( County). — For stealing, 26th ult., a new black vicuna cloth lounge jacket and a pair of blue and grey striped tweed trousers, " Miles, Brook Street," on buttons— A MAN, age about 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, prominent nose, hair ( turning grey) sandy, moustache grey ; dress, brown suit ( much worn), black hard felt hat. A tramping tailor. Information to Supt. Dorrell, Maidenhead. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 8. — Fenny Stratford ( County).— For larceny — HENRY ROADS, age 29, height 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion fresh, hair and heavy moustache brown, eyes grey; dress, dark jacket, corduroy breeches, brown leather leggings, light cap. A butcher ; native of Winslow. May be employed as a drover. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lait, Fenny Stratford. 9. — Chepping Wycombe ( Borouqh).— For assaulting his wife and child— RALPH LUNNON, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, com- plexion pale, hair, slight moustache and eyes dark, upper front teeth deficient, scrofula mark right side of neck ; dress black jacket and vest, light tweed trousers, light peak cap, coloured neckerchief, lace boots. A chairmaker. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Sparling, High Wycombe. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 10.— Cambridge [ Borough).— For obtaining £ 4 12s. 6d. by a worthless cheque on 16th nit.— CHARLES HOLDEN, alias BARRETT, age 30, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fair, hair ( long and curled in front) light brown, clean shaved, front teeth prominent, of theatrical appearance, plausible manner; may be wearing dark brown speckled jacket suit and velvet cord cap, or light brown suit and Alpine hat, or black frock coat and high silk hat. He takes private lodgings, and remains about a week, when he leaves without paying; sings and plays the piano at public- houses. Is accompanied by his wife, age about 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fair, hair hangs over forehead, of theatrical appear- ance ; two boys, age 8 and 5 respectively; and a woman, age about 32, whom they represent as their servant. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Harris, Carnarvon. 12. — Conway ( County).— For stealing, 16th ult., at Llandudno, a " Parr " tyre tricycle, 28 in. front, 80 in. side wheels, recently re- enamelled and plated, Bood brake and roller chain ( old pattern), Brooke's saddle, transfer bears the name of " A. Deacon & Son"— a man who gave the name of " WILSON, age 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey; wearing a light suit and cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Rees, Conway. CHESHIRE. 13.— Altrincham ( Comity).— For indecent ex- posure— WILLIAM JOHN FANNELL, age 24, height 5 ft. in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes grey; dress, long black ( faded) overcoat, blue serge trousers, brown soft felt hat. A french polisher ; native of Altrincham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McDonald, Altrincham. 14.— Macclesfield ( County).— For assault, 18th ult., at Great Warford— THOMAS DUFFY, an Irishman, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, blotched face, hair light brown, moustache light, may be clean shaved, cast in one eye ; dress, black coat and vest, cord trousers, cap, usually wears clogs. A labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Sugt. Downes, County Police Office, Macclesfield. 15.— Chester ( City).— For obtaining, 2nd ult., by false pretences, 2 gold, jewelled curb bracelets ( 1 set diamond, 1 set 3 diamonds)— a man who gave the name of H. JAGGER, age 24 or 25, height about 5 ft. 8 in., well built, complexion fair, large square face, hair light brown, may be wearing a small light moustache; dress, fancy brown and white check suit ( either knickerbocker or breeches and leggings), and cap. Warrant issued. 16.— Chester ( City).— For stealing, 23rd ult., from his lodgings, a dark grey jacket suit; 2 pairs light drab trousers ; 1 stone grey plaid jacket suit; 1 blue jacket suit, maker " McLeod, Glasgow; " 1 square block- tin box, with curved top— a man who gave the name of GEORGE LAMBERT, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( cut close) dark brown, thick dark moustache; dress, dark grey woe lien suit, brown felt hat; wears spats. Stated he came from Windermere, and was a traveller for a Tea Company and for Dr. Barnardo's Homes. He left the same day for Stafford. Left behind a light brown round tin box, with bands of darker colour, labelled " Tebay," containing clothing, including a pair of blue and black striped tweed trousers, buttons " ' Imperial,' Stevenson Brothers, Darlington;" 1 blue- grey cotton shirt, marked " Norton;" 8 linen fronts, size 15, marked " A. Buckley, Middlesbrough and West Hartlepool; " a book of Ancient and Modern Hymns, " Miss Mace, Hemington, Novr. 16, 1883," inside. Warrant issued. CUMBERLAND. 17.— Workington ( County).— For failing to re- portat Workington— Supervisee HENRY KELNISH, alias McGARRY, Office No. 43182, age 58, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair sandy ( turning grey), eyes grey, oval face, proportionate build, tattooed tree inside forearm, H. M. and scroll on wrist, scar right eyebrow, nose inclines, to left. A labourer; native of Ireland. Sentenced at Lancaster, 2nd July, 1888, to 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision for larceny. Licenced 6th July, 1892. J. O. 706. Left Skerton 6th ult. 18.— Workington ( County).— For embezzling £ 15 12s. 7d — JOSEPH REAY, age 38, height about 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair and moustache brown, short sighted and wears round glasses; dress, dark blue serge suit, black overcoat with dark velvet collar, black hard felt hat, carried a brown Gladstone bag, rug, mackintosh and umbrella. Late secretary to a coal company. Native of Cocker- mouth. Stated at Preston, on 16th ult., that he was going to London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hope, Workington. DERBYSHIRE. 19.— Glossop ( Borow/ h).— For embezzlement, 9th ult.— JOHN WILLIAM ROWE, age 18, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, mark near throat, large mouth ; dress, black reefer acket, sleeves too long and turned in, black vest, grey trousers, blue cap, red and blue silk necker- chief, clogs. Recently in the employ of an ice cream vendor. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Hodgson, Glossop. DEVONSHIRE. 20.— Barnstaple ( Borough).— For embezzling £ 1,107— WILLIAM LOCK, age 58, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald top) grey, slight moustache and whiskers turning grey, stoops when walking; usually dressed in dark grey clothes; late rate collector. Information to the Head Constable, Barnstaple. DORSETSHIRE. 21.— Shaftesbury ( County).— For leaving his wife and family chargeable to the Common Fund of the Shaftesbury Union— CHARLES HARDIMAN, age 32, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and heavy moustache light brown, eyes grey, 2 rings tattooed on left little finger; dress, dark brown tweed coat, grey vest, light plaid trousers, blue striped flannelette shirt, dark brown skull cap. A plasterer; native of Iwerne- Minster, Dorset. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Elford, Shaftesbury. ESSEX. 22. — Latchingdon ( County).— For stealing, 25th ult., from a coal ship at Burnham- on- Croucb, a seaman's blue serge suit ( nearly new), peak cap, a pair of lace boots and £ 1 16s.— ERNEST OLSON, an Irishman, age 20, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., com plexion, hair and eyes dark, scar under both eyes ; wearing the stolen clothing. A seaman. He left Southminster for Liverpool Street, G. E. R., 25th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Halsey, Latcliingdon. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 23.— Barry Dock ( County).— For failing to report— Licence holder FRANCIS RYAN, Office No. 267- 98, age 37, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown ( thin), eyes grey, scar bridge of nose, crown of head, right ear, nape of neck ( boil), back and palm of right hand, ball of left thumb, and on left forearm ; indistinct tattoo mark on left fore- arm. A bricklayer, native of Manchester. Sentenced at Manchester Assizes, 21st February, 1894, to 4 years penal servitude and remanet of former sen- tence for possessing a mould for coining. Licenced 25th January, 1898. KPU 339. For failing to report — Supervisee ALFRED JONES, alius ROBERT EDWARDS, Office No. 1604- 96, age 29, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes grey, coat- of- arms on left, crossed daggers, dot and wreath encircling shield and Union Jack on right upper arm, ship, vase of flowers, half wreath, crossed flags, crossed daggers and part bracelet on left, crown, crossed flags, cross and anchor, sailor, star and part bracelet on right forearm, quarter- moon, star, dot, T and F back right hand, cross, half wreath, star, sailor ( covered), star, female ( covered) and ships on chest, star front right thigh. A porter, native of London. Sentenced at North London Sessions, 18th February, 1895, to 15 months hard labour and 2 years police supervision for larceny. Liberated 16th May, 1896. 15110. HAMPSHIRE. 24.— Basingstoke { County).— For embezzle- ment— HENRY COOPER, age about 50, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., hair ( thin on top) dark brown, beard and moustache dark ( turning grey), prominent fore- head, walks with swinging gait; dress, when last seen, dark morning coat and vest, light trousers, black hard felt hat, low shoes. A grocer's clerk. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Hale, Basingstoke. 25.— Winchester ( City).— For stealing, 23rd ult., a mare ( recovered).— WILLIAM FENNER, alias A. ATKINS, age 27, height about 6 ft., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, 6 moles left forearm, 1 over right eye, several on neck, 1 centre of back, 1 centre of upper right forearm, 1 left buttock, 2 dots lower right forearm, carries his head forward, large feet, walks badly; dress, light grey cloth suit, brown hat or grey cloth cap, brown boots with wide soles. A native of Hornsey, London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Felton, City Police Office, Winchester. 26.— Portsmouth ( Borough). — For fraud — ALBERT JONES, age 20, height 5 ft. 9 in., com- plexion fresh, clean shaved, eyes dark grey, mole right cheek, good teeth, star inside both forearms; dress, dark drab jacket suit, dark cap, military boots. Is a deserter from Royal Marine Light Infantry. Had with him when he absconded a diamond frame bicycle, white bone handles ; " The Don Cycle Works," on transfer, on head. May endeavour to re- enlist. Warrant issued. 27.— Portsmouth ( Borough). — For stealing, 16th ult., 5 pairs of boots- LOUISA BUNCE, alias BROWN and WILSON, age 23, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, liair and eyes brown; dress, dark bodice and skirt, black straw hat, large white apron. May apply at a Police Office for a pedlar's certificate. Mrs. SMITH, alias STANLEY, age about 50, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, sharp features; dressed in black, with black shawl. They obtain boots by stating that they have customers for them. May be found in the company of three men who travel with 2 vans— 1 red, the other green. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 28.— Southampton ( Borough).—. For larceny— GEORGE GREEN, age 85 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, face inclined to be blotchy from the effects of drink, hair brown, eyes blue, walks erect, takes quick short steps ; dress, old black overcoat, piece of facing of collar torn out, black morning coat, black hard felt hat. A wood turner. Warrant issued. 29.— Southampton ( Borough).— For stealing a watch HUGHES, age about 19, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair brown. A gunner of the Royal Marine Artillery. Absconded 26th ult. May be wearing plain clothes ( stolen). Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southampton. HEREFORDSHIRE. 30.— Hereford ( City). — For larceny ( bailee)— ALFRED FERGUSON PALKS, alias FURGUSON, age about 22, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown; dress, dark brown suit with light stripes, lace boots, yachting cap; sometimes wears soft felt hat. Is a professional comic singer and pianoforte player; supposed a native of London. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Hereford. KENT. 31.— Sittingbourne ( County).— For stealing, 20th ult., a pair of plain gold earrings, 1 new melodeon and 2 new brown mixture suits of clothes— ALFRED , an Italian, age about 22, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., fat face, hair dark, clean shaved; wearing one of the above suits, blue skull cap, Jack boots. Carried a red handkerchief containing the other suit and melodion. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Turner, Sittingbourne. 32.— Tunbridge Wells ( Borough).— For steal- ing a gun ( recovered)— JAMES JOHNSON WHITE, age 85, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, moustache light brown, eyes blue; dress, grey tweed jacket, black tweed trousers, grey tweed cap. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Prior, Tunbridge Wells. LANARKSHIRE. 33.— Glasgow ( City).— For stealing, 29th ult., 4 £ 20 and 9 £ 1 National Bank of Scotland Notes— GEORGE ORR, age 19, height 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion sallow, effeminate face, hair light, eyes blue, joints of limbs stiff from rheumatism, walks lame; dress, brown tweed suit, dark felt hat, lace boots, probably carrying a small brown leather handbag. A clerk, absconded 29th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Boyd, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. 34.— Chorley ( County).— For stealing, 12th ult., 4 shirts, 1 umbrella, 1 silk square, 1 rug, 1 table cloth, 1 skirt, 4 pairs socks, 2 pairs braces, all new— HARRY RE ID, age 24 or 25, height 5 ft., com- plexion sallow, hair light brown, sore eyes, end of nose red, very small feet; dress, when last seen, grey mixture jacket suit, long drab Newmarket overcoat, 4 THE POLICE GAZETTE. TUESDAY, APRIL 26, 1 8 9 8 . eyes blue, scar left forearm and eyebrow, upper front teeth deficient; dress, dark cloth jacket and vest, brown cloth trousers, dark cap, lace boots, all old. He travels the country and works for farmers and blacksmiths, sings at public houses and frequents common lodging houses. Native of Killinghall, Harrogate. Warrant issued. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING). 59— Leeds ( City).— For failing to report on liberation— Licence holder JOHN BROWN, alias JOHN BURKE, JAMES SWEENEY and JOHN WILSON, Office No. 861- 98, age 50, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, hair iron grey, eyes grey, tattooed outside upper left arm, 3 women, cross flags and head front left forearm, elephant, woman, dog, crossed swords, crown and bracelet back left forearm, woman and Maltese cross back left hand, scar outside left forearm, woman on pedestal front right forearm, bust of woman front right forearm, woman, bracelet and snake back right forearm, crossed flags, crown and anchor back right hand, cross, heart, wreath, anchor and eight- pointed star on chest, face and back pock marked. A native of Dublin. Sentenced at Wake- field Sessions, 9th April, 1890, to 7 years penal servitude for larceny, and at Cambridge, 3rd Novem- ber, 1896, to 9 months hard labour and Licence revoked for larceny. Liberated on 2nd Licence, 21st ult., which expires 5th June, 1898. Q. 102.
