THE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, APRIL 29, 1898. REGULATIONS. VOL. XV., No. 1496. 1. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SOOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3 Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified, i. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, ami the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious off owes, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a'cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of nut less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant, is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement,, for insertion in the next issue. 10< t In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than , noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, und accompa nied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order or by Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. R. ANDERSON, Editor. Dorrell, Maidenhead. 11.— Newbury { County).— For attempting to obtain money by a forged letter— JOHN BURK, age about 60, height 5 ft. 10 in., hair and slight whiskers grey, eyes grey or light blue; dress, shabby black overcoat, black or grey trousers, black felt hat, carries a small black bag. He calls on Roman Catholic priests. May be found at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Robotham, Newbury. 12.— Wokingham I County).— For obtaining 10s. by false pretences MARTIN, age 26 to 28, height about 5 ft. S in., complexion ( supposed) dark, hair and moustache dark; wearing a long dark over- coat. He obtained the above by stating he was collecting money for the widow of a fireman who was injured in January last and had since died. Supposed identical with case No. 39, 8th inst. Warrant issued. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 16.— Cambridge { Borouijli).— For obtaining £ 4 12s. 6d. by a worthless cheque on 16th inst.— CHARLES HOLDEN, alia* BARRETT, age 80, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fair, hair ( long and curled in front) light brown, clean shaved, front teeth prominent, of theatrical appearance, plausible manner; may be wearing dark brown speckled jacket suit and velvet cord cap, or light brown suit and Alpine hat, or black frock coat and high silk hat. He takes private lodgings, and remains about a week, when he leaves without paying ; sings and plays the piano at public- houses. Is accompanied by his wife, age about 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair hangs over forehead, of theatrical appear- ance ; two boys, age 8 and 5 respectively ; and a woman, age about 82, whom they represent as their servant. WOODS, and J R. S. WRIGHT, age 40, height 5 ft. 5 or G ins., slight build, complexion sallow, hair dark, clean shaved, nose slightly turned up ; dress, usually black clothing. He posts circulars to dressmakers, etc., offering serge at Is. per yard, and on obtaining the money absconds. Warrant issued. Deacon & Son"— a man who gave the name of WILSON, age 23, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey; wearing a light suit and cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. JAGGER, age 24 or 25, height about 5 ft. 8 in., well built, complexion fair, large square face, hair light brown, may be wearing a small light moustache ; dress, fancy brown and white check suit ( either knickerbockeror breeches and leggings), and cap. Warrant issued. 22.— Chester { City).— For stealing, 23rd inst., from his lodgings, a dark grey jacket suit; 2 pairs light drab trousers; 1 stone grey plaid jacket suit; 1 blue jacket suit, maker " McLeod, Glasgow ; " 1 square block- tin box, with curved top— a man who gave the name of GEORGE LAMBERT, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( cut close) dark brown, thick dark moustache; dress, dark grey wocllen suit, brown felt hat; wears spats. Stated he came from Windermere, and was a traveller for a Tea Company and for Dr. Barnardo's Homes. He left the same day for Stafford. Left behind a light brown round tin box, with bands of darker colour, labelled " Tebay," containing clothing, including a pair of blue and black striped tweed trousers, buttons " ' Imperial,' Stevenson Brothers, Darlington;" 1 blue- grey cotton shirt, marked " Norton ; " 8 linen fronts, size 15, marked " A. Buckley, Middlesbrough and West Hartlepool; " a book of Ancient and Modern Hymns, " Miss Mace, Hemington, Novr. 16, 1883," inside. Warrant issued. Wrexham ( Cutmty).— For stealing, between 1 TJth and 23rd ult., a quantity of brass fittings ( recovered)- MEREDITH JONES, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., red blotched face, hair and moustache dark brown; dress, old drab dustcoat, repaired at back, grey tweed trousers, muffler, nq, vy blue broad brimmed cap with peak and brass ornament in front. Has the appearance of a fitter, and carries a bass containing tools. A native of Pentre- Braughton, near Wrexham. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Jones, Wrexham. DERBYSHIRE. 25.— Glossop { Borow/ h).— For embezzlement, 9th inst.— JOHN WILLIAM ROWE, age 18, height 5 fc. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, mark near throat, large mouth ; dress, black reefer acket, sleeves too long and turned in, black vest, grey trousers, blue cap, red and blue silk necker- chief, clogs. DORSETSHIRE. 26.— Shaftesbury { County).— For leaving his wife and family chargeable to the Common Fund of the Shaftesbury Union— CHARLES HARDIMAN, age 82, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and heavy moustache light brown, eyes grey, 2 rings tattooed on left little finger; dress, dark brown tweed coat, grey vest, light plaid trousers, blue striped flannelette shirt, dark brown skull cap. A plasterer; native of Iwerne- Minster, Dorset. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Elford, Shaftesbury. ESSEX. 27. — Latchingdon { County):— For stealing, 25th inst., from a coal ship at Burnham- on- Crouch, a seaman's blue serge suit ( nearly new), peak cap, a pair of lace boots and £ 1 16s.— ERNEST OLSON, an Irishman, age 20, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., com- plexion, hair and eyes dark, scar under both eyes; wearing the stolen clothing. A seaman. He left Southininster for Liverpool Street, G. E. R., 25th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Halsey, Latchingdon. 28.- Saffron Walden { County).— For stealing from his lodgings a silver watch chain with key and seal a rough black jacket, usual pockets, and £ 1 2s. 6d.— FREDERICK SKINGLE, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark, thin light moustache, wearing dark clothes, blue neckerchief, hard felt hat. Has served in the army. A native of Little Canfield, Essex. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Saffron Walden. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 29.— Stroud { County).— For rape— ERNEST FIFIELD, age 19 or 20, height 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion fresh, clean shaved, hair dark brown, eyes dark, has very long legs, and leans forward when walking; dress, blue serge coat and vest, brown tweed trousers, lace boots, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Harrison, Stroud. HAMPSHIRE. 30— Basingstoke ( County). — For embezzle- ment— HENRY COOPER, age about 50, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., hair ( thin on top) dark brown, beard and moustache dark ( turning grey), prominent fore- head, walks with swinging gait; dress, when last seen, dark morning coat and vest, light trousers, black hard felt hat, low shoes. A grocer's clerk. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Hale, Basingstoke. HERTFORDSHIRE. 81.— St. Albans ( City).— For stealing, 5th inst., a lady's small silver Geneva watch, No. 0935, and silver albert— ROBERT ALLISON or HARRISON, age about 18, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair and eyes dark, full face, snub nose, rather thick hps; dress, dark clothes, fur cap. A native of Man- chester. Information to Head Constable Blatch, St. Albans. KENT. 82.— Sandgate { County). — For embezzlement and stealing a bicycle— JOHN WINTERS, age 25, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clem shaved, eyes grey, dancing girl and woman's head on lorearms; dress, light grey suit, white tie, stand- up collar, brown Alpine hat. A native of Kisleen, Killen, Castlederg, Tyrone. Is believed to be in Scotland canvassing for a photo- grapher. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Waghorn, Sandgate. 33— Sittingbourne { County).— For stealing, 20th inst., a pair of plain gold earrings, 1 new melodeon and 2 new brown mixture suits of clothes— ALFRED , an Italian, age about 22, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., fat face, hair dark, clean shaved; wearing one of the above suits, blue skull cap, Jack boots. Carried a red handkerchief containing the other suit and melodion. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Turner, Sittingbourne. LANCASHIRE. 34.— Chorley { County).— For stealing, 12tliinst., 4 shirts, 1 umbrella, 1 silk square, 1 rug, 1 table cloth, 1 skirt, 4 pairs socks, 2 pairs braces, all new— HARRY RE ID, age 24 or 25, height 5 ft., com* plexion sallow, hair light brown, sore eyes, end o nose red, very small feet; dress, when last seen, grey mixture jacket suit, long drab Newmarket overcoat, black billycock hat. A horse dealer. He takes pri- vate lodgings and hires stables at a public house, and advertises harness, & c., for sale ; he then orders goods to be sent to his lodgings and on receiving same absconds. He frequently produces a post- dated cheque, stating that he has just sold a horse and will pay for the goods the following morning. Is believed to belong to a gang who are engaged in similar prac- tices. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. TUESDAY, APRIL 2(>, 1898. ROBERTS, age 25 to 30, height about 5 ft. 9 in., dark moustache; dress, black suit, may be wearing a blue cap, or black billycock hat with high crown.
