All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SOOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3 Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified, i. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed bg the signature of an officer of nit less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or unuloyous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any annouiwement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition 7Wt later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied- by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be. in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Ort'. c or by Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted • a payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. R. ANDERSON, Editor. Has used the name of Bond. Warrant issued. 5.— For obtaining money by false pretences — a MAN, age about 54, height 5 ft. 4 in., thick set, short neck, complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curl) and moustache sandy ( turning grey), bunions on both feet ( prominent), appearance of a heavy drinker. He advertises for clerks and obtains cash securities. Has used the names of Alexander Campbell and Churchill. Was recently in business at Southend as a Transfer Agent. Warrant issued. BEDFORDSHIRE. 6.— Bedford ( Borough). — For burglary, 6th inst., and stealing a silver medal about the size of a 5s. piece, man's head on one side, " Sir Joseph Banks, Bt., P. R. S., born 1713 ( or 1773), died 1820," engraved round, may have " Orr " and " 15th Oct., 1895," on the other side— A MAN, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, upright, com- plexion fresh, rather long features, moustache light, left middle finger deficient; dress, dark blue rib check morning coat and vest, grey mixture trousers, grey mixture cap, new lace boots size 8, " Registered 87002 " on straps, " Knight of the Garter" stamped inside; clothing ( except cap) stolen. Stated he had served in the army and had been shot through the hand. Information to Chief Constable Thody, Bedford. BERKSHIRE. 7.— Newbury ( County). — For attempting to obtain money by a forged letter— JOHN BURK, age about 60, height 5 ft. 10 in., hair and slight whiskers grey, eyes grey or light blue ; dress, shabby black overcoat, black or grey trousers, black felt hat, carries a small black bag. He calls on Roman Catholic priests. May be found at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Robotham, Newbury. 8.— Wokingham ( County).— For obtaining 10s. by false pretences MARTIN, age 26 to 28, height about 5 ft. 3 in., complexion ( supposed) dark, hair and moustache dark; wearing a long dark over- coat. He obtained the above by stating he was collecting money for the widow of a fireman who was injured in January last and had since died. Supposed identical with case No. 39, 8th inst. Warrant issued. Molsher, Wokingham. 9.— Reading ( Borough). — For stealing, 31st ult., 1 old- fashioned silver lever watch, 1 silver chain ( recovered) and 2 gold signet rings— PATRICK LAWLESS, an Irishman, age 22, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, clean shaved, hair fair, cast in one eye; dress, dark coat and vest, light trousers, black hard felt hat, stand- up collar, blue tie with white spots. Information to Captain Henderson, Chief Con- stable, Reading. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 10.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For stealing, 2nd ult., a costermonger's barrow ( recovered)— W. SIMP- SON, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion and hair dark, clean shaved, very high forehead ; dress, black coat and vest, dark trousers, dark grey cap, wears a painter's apron and states he is a painter and glazier. Warrant issued. 11.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For wilful and corrupt perjury. 17th January last— DENIS LEARY, alias RENNARD, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, slight moustache light; dress, shabby grey suit and cap. A hawker of plants, & c.; native of Notting Hill, London. Frequents common lodging houses. Is accompanied by a woman whom he represents as his wife, age 28 or 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion dark, hair black ; dress, black dress and black hat trimmed with large black feather, white apron and grey shawl; 2 girls ages 12 and 6, and a boy age about 17 months. CHESHIRE. 12.— Oakmere ( County). — For stealing, 8th inst., at Frodsham, a " Juno" Roadster bicycle, 1897 pattern, ordinary round handle bars plated, cork handles, Dunlop Welsh tyres, tangent spokes, plated about 2 inches from hub, rubber pedals, cranks sprained, hammer marks on right crank, chain wheel ( 19 teeth) loose, dent in fork over maker's name, enamel partly scratched oft cross bar, " Juno " lamp and old rusty bell attached— A MAN, age 23 or 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache dark brown ; dress, brown mixture tweed jacket and trousers, low hard felt hat. DENBIGHSHIRE. 13.— Denbigh ( County).— For larceny at Colwyn Bay— ALBERT JOHN DUROSE, age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair black, moustache dark brown, eyes brown, appearance of a heavy drinker. A barman. Native of Chester. Is fond of billiards. He left Colwyn Bay for Chester, accompanied by his wife and two children. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Denbigh, or Inspector Roberts, Abergele. 14.— Wrexham ( County).— For stealing, between loth and 23rd ult., a quantity of brass fittings ( recovered)— MEREDITH JONES, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., red blotched face, hair and moustache dark brown ; dress, old drab dustcoat, repaired at back, grey tweed trousers, muffler, navy blue broad brimmed cap with peak and brass ornament in front. Has the appearance of a fitter, and carries a bass containing tools. A native of Pentre- Braughton, near Wrexham. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Jones, Wrexham. DORSETSHIRE. 15.— Dorchester ( County).— For pretending to tell fortunes— MADAME NORDICA ( supposed false), age 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion pale, very thin face, hair brown; dress, black jacket and skirt, very small bonnet trimmed red, black veil, may be wearing a brown jacket, brown fur on sleeves, carried a small black hand bag. A native of Bath. Has been travelling the country pretending to tell fortunes by palmistry. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Burden, Dorchester. ESSEX. 16.— Chelmsford ( County). — For larceny— Expiree - JOHN THORRINGTON, alias WHEELER, JOACHIM, JONES and DU GRAY, Office No. 49087, age 53, height 5 ft. 5i in., complexion dark, hair dark brown turning grey, eyes brown ; crossed flags, cross and indistinct marks on left forearm ; ring left middle finger; ruptured and wears a truss. Sentenced at Essex Quarter Sessions, 21st October, 1891, to five years' penal servitude for larceny. Information and particulars of subsequent con- victions to Deputy Chief Constable Somerset, Chelmsford. 17. — Saffron Walden ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings a silver watch chain with key and seal, a rough black jacket, usual pockets, and £ 1 2s. 6d.— FREDERICK SKIMGLE, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark, thin light moustache, wearing dark clothes, blue neckerchief, hard felt hat. A native of London. May be found in company of theatricals. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Bournemouth. HERTFORDSHIRE. 20. Hemel Hempstead ( County). — For deserting his children— FREDERICK MONGER, age 48, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) dark brown, deep scar bottom of back, right eye paralysed, right hand closed through rheumatism, walks lame ; dress, 2 jackets ( 1 light cloth, other brown cord), brown cord trousers, cap. ISLE OF WIGHT. 23.— Newport ( County).— For an indecent as- sault, 23rd ult., at New' Church— FREDERICK CHAMBERS, age 24, height 5 ft. 2 in., stout build, complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes light blue; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, light trousers, skull cap. A labourer ; native of Shanklin. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hale, Newport. KENT. 24.— Sandgate ( County). — For embezzlement and stealing a bicycle— JOHN WINTERS, age 25, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes grey, dancing girl and woman's head on forearms; dress, light grey suit, white tie, stand- up collar, brown Alpine hat. A native of Kisleen, Ivillen, Castlederg, Tyrone. Is believed to be in Scotland canvassing for a photo- grapher. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Waghorn, Sandgate. 25. Folkestone ( Borough).— For embezzling £ 8 13s. Od.— WILLIAM DENNY, age about 30, height 5 ft. 30 in., complexion pale, hair and mous- tache black, heavy eyebrows. A meat purveyor's manager. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Folkestone. LEICESTERSHIRE. 26.— South Wigston ( County).— For stealing a horse ( recovered)— WALTER YATES, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, pock marked and freckled face, hair brown; dress, grey jacket and vest ( too large for him), brown cord trousers, red scarf with white spots, dark cloth cap. A drover ; supposed a native of Birmingham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ormiston, South Wigston. LINCOLNSHIRE. 27— Grimsby ( Borough)— For stealing a cash box containing a bank pass book and cheque book on Messrs. Smith, Ellison & Co.' s Bank, Lincoln and about £ 8— ERNEST HENTSCHEL, alias P. SMITH, age about 21, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., com- plexion sallow, hair brown, small moustache dark brown, eyes brown, 4 upper front teeth missing; dress, black coat syid vest, light grey trousers, black felt hat, wearing a silver watch- chain with bunch of keys attached. A commission agent or traveller. He sings at concert rooms at public- houses. Is known at Manchester and Birmingham. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Pickersgill, Grimsby. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 28.— Newport ( Borough).— For obtaining, 5th inst., by false pretences, an 18 carat gold albert chain, open link pattern, and a gold seal pendant, long pattern, with yellow topaz stone— CHARLES GODWIN, age about 25, height 5 ft. 9 in., com- plexion fresh, hair and moustache dark; wearing a long grey overcoat ( tight fitting) with black velvet collar, black hard felt hat. Stated he was a wine merchant's traveller. He called at a jeweller's, selected the chain and seal and gave a worthless cheque for £ 8 18s. 6d. on the Hammersmith Branch of the London and County Bank in payment. May be wanted for similar offences elsewhere. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Sinclair, Newport. NORFOLK. 29.— Acle ( County).— For attempting to obtain charitable contributions by fraud— GARRA- WAY, age about 35, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light; dress, long black overcoat, dark trousers, soft felt hat, wearing a signet ring on right hand. Appearance of a Dissenting minister. He calls upon clergymen, & c., and pro- duces a paper, purporting to be a brief, stating he is collecting money for a widow in indigent circum- stances, with a view of starting her in a laundry business. NORTHUMBERLAND. 30.— Hexham ( County).— For stealing, 5th ult., a pony ( recovered)— JOSEPH LAWSON, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion pale, small features, hair and slight moustache brown, slight cast in eyes; dress, blue jacket and vest, blue and black striped trousers, blue and white spotted necker- chief, light cap. A stableman or helper ; native of Penrith, Carlisle. Warrant issued. Information to Captain Terry, Chief Constable, Morpeth, or Supt. Robertson, Hexham. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 31.— Newark ( Borough).— For embezzlement— ARTHUR WOOD, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown ; dress, light mixture suit, fawn colour dust coat, bowler hat, stand- up collar, supposed brown boots ; was wearing a new silver lever watch, No. 229796.
