THE NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, APRIL 8, 1898. VOL. XV7., No. 141) 0. REGULATIONS. 1. All annowicements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should he addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them bg another force. 3 Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, ami engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. Hd. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every annou ncement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is ~ required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the. requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. ( j. Annouiwements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in thi' POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any a mum ncement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received nut later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a coveriiuj letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order or by Post Office Order payable at. Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. R. ANDERSON, Editor. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1888. 8.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of adver- tisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detection of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regulations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( l>) The conditions on which it is payable. (<•) The name and address of the person by whom it will be paid. (< l) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. ( 32 and 38 Vic., cap. 24, sec. 2.) 2. No expression must bo used in such an adver- tisement, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. Attention is specially directed to clause (</), par. 1, as Police Notices are constantly being received by the Metropolitan Police without the printer's name and address, and they are consequently not distributed. NOTE.— There are 181 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at uhich Notices can Le posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. CITY OF LONDON. 1.— For stealing £ 103 2s. — FREDERICK A. STONIER, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., com- plexion dark, high cheek bones, hair, moustache and beard dark brown, eyes sunken, walks erect; dress, dark brown overcoat, velvet collar, rough black jacket, dark trousers, black felt hat. A solicitor's clerk. Native of Birmingham. Had in his posses- sion when absconded, 2nd inst., 18 £ 5 Bank of England notes, Nos. 18409 to 26. Warrant issued. 2.— For obtaining money by false pretences — HAROLD PATRICK TRUEFIT, age 30 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, com- plexion pale, long thin face, hair brown, clean shaved, wearing dark blue sackback overcoat, hard felt hat, of horsey appearance. Has used the name of Bond. Warrant issued. 8.— For obtaining money by false pretences — a MAN, age about 54, height 5 ft. 4 in., thick set, short neck, complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curl) and moustache sandy ( turning grey), bunions on both feet ( prominent), appearance of a heavy drinker. He advertises for clerks and obtains cash securities. Has used the names of Alexander Campbell and Churchill. Was recently in business at Southend as a Transfer Agent. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BERKSHIRE. 4.— New Windsor ( Borough). — For larceny ( lodgings) — A MAN, age 25, height 5 t. 7 in., round face, clean shaved, hair brown; dress, black- morning coat, dark trousers, white front and tie, black silk hat, carried tan gloves, and wore a long silver or steel chain. Information to Head Constable Armour, New Windsor. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 5.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For stealing, 2nd ult., a costermonger's barrow ( recovered)— W. SIMP- SON, age 28 to 80, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion and hair dark, clean shaved, very high forehead ; dress, black coat and vest, dark trousers, dark grey cap, wears a painter's apron and states lie is a painter and glazier. May be found at markets selling car- digan jackets, sham jewellery, & c., but usually tramps from town to town glazing and cleaning windows; carries a glass frame. Has in his possession a rubber stamp with " W. Simpson, Contractor, Painter and Glazier, Lowestoft," thereon. Warrant issued. 6.— Cambridge ( Borough). — For wilful and corrupt perjury, 17th January last— DENIS LEARY, alias RENNARD, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, slight moustache light; dress, shabby grey suit and cap. A hawker of plants, & c.; native of Notting Hill, London. Frequents common lodging houses. Is accompanied by a woman whom he represents as his wife, age 28 or 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion dark, hair black; dress, black dress and black hat trimmed with large black feather, white apron and grey shawl; 2 girls ages 12 and 6, aud a boy age about 17 months. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Holland, Cam- bridge. CHESHIRE. 7. — Altrincham ( County). — For stealing a " Premier, 1895, Roadster" bicycle, No. 92564, " Dunlop Welch " tyres ; a pair of strong lace boots, size 8; and a dark tweed coat and vest— FRANK RICHARD HAMILTON, age 23, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved ; wearing the stolen coat and vest, dark trousers, light cap. A groom; native of Newchurch, near War- rington. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McDonald, Altrincham. 8.— Nantwich ( County). — For stealing, 16th and 18th Feb., £ 38, at Crewe— FREDERICK GEORGE SEDDON, age 26, height 6 ft., complexion fair, long face, cheeks slightly sunken, hair and mou- stache light brown, eyes light blue, wears gold rimmed spectacles, gold rings on 3rd and 4th left fingers, stoops when walking. A native of Derby. The above amount had been invested in the firm of Seddon & Piatt, Accountants and Money Lenders, of which he was a partner. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Meredith, Nantwich. DENBIGHSHIRE. 9.— Denbigh ( County).— For larceny at Colwyn Bay— ALBERT JOHN DUROSE, age about 85, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair black, moustache dark brown, eyes brown, appearance of a heavy drinker. A barman Native of Chester. Is fond of billiards. He left Colwyn Bay for Chester, accompanied by his wife and two children. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hawker, native of Sheffield. Sentenced at Wakefield County Sessions, 17th Octo- ber, 1892, to 5 years penal servitude for larceny ( person), and at Chesterfield Borough Petty Sessions, 6th October, 1897. to 7 days hard labour and licence revoked for drunkenness. Liberated on 2nd licence, 21th February last, into Chesterfield Police District. S. 22. Information to Head Constable Emery, Chester- field. DORSETSHIRE. 11.— Dorchester ( Count!/).— For pretending to tell fortunes— MADAME NORDICA ( supposed false), age 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion pale, very thin face, hair brown; dress, black jacket and skirt, very small bonnet trimmed red, black veil, may be wearing a brown jacket, brown fur on sleeves, carried a small black hand bag. A native of Bath. Has been travelling the country pretending to tell fortunes by palmistry. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Burden, Dorchester. HAMPSHIRE. 12.— Aldershot ( County).— For stealing, 19th or 20th ult., 2 suits of clothes (] light check, 1 dark brown); 2 pairs button boots ; 3 light colour flannel shirts, nearly new ; 12 white pocket handkerchiefs, coloured borders; 1 silver mounted brown twisted walking stick; 1 clothes brush; 1 set gold sleeve links and studs ; 1 lady's gold ring, set diamond; 1 lady's silver watch and Victoria chain— A MAN, age 23, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache light brown, eyes grey, cross right forearm, sailor left forearm, bad upper front teeth ; wearing the stolen check trousers, brown jacket and vest, black felt hat, red tie, new button boots, carries a walking stick. May endeavour to enlist. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. 13.— Bournemouth ( County).— For stealing a lady's silver watch and chain ( recovered)— DORA SOANE, age about 22, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., com- plexion and hair dark ( about 6 inches long and very wavy); dress, dark jacket and dress, black hat trimmed with green velvet and red flower or feathers. A native of London. May be found in company of theatricals. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Bournemouth. HEREFORDSHIRE. 14.— Ledburv ( County).— CHARLES DAVIES, Case No. 26, 8th October, 1897. Not to be arrested. Warrant withdrawn. HERTFORDSHIRE. 15. — Hemel Hempstead (' ' aunty). — For deserting his children— FREDERICK MONGER, age 48, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) dark brown, deep scar bottom of back, right eye paralysed, right hand closed through rheumatism, walks lame; dress, 2 jackets ( 1 light cloth, other brown cord), brown cord trousers, cap. A fitter's labourer. Native of Great Berk- hampsted. Warrant issued. 16. — Hemel Hempstead ( County). — For deserting his children — GEORGE LEE, alias CODGER, age 39, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey), moustache and eyes brown ; dressed as a labourer. A bird catcher. Native of Hemel Hempstead. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Frogley, Hemel Hempstead. 17.— St. Albans (' %)•— For stealing, 5th inst., a lady's small silver Geneva watch, No. 0935, and silver albert— ROBERT ALLISON or HARRISON, age about 18, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair and eyes dark, full face, snub nose, rather thick lips; dress, dark clothes, fur cap. A native of Man- chester. Information to Head Constable Blatch, St. Albans. complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes light blue; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, light trousers, skull cap. KENT. 19.— Sittingbourne ( County).— For leaving his two children chargeable to the Milton Union— PHILIP HEATHFIELD, alias HOPPY, age 44, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, hair and eyes brown, left leg shorter than the right; dress, cord vest, with fustian sleeves, black cord trousers patched on one knee, dark cloth cap, heavy lace boots. May be employed at a brickfield. Warrant issued. 20.— Sittingbourne ( County).— For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the Milton Union— WILLIAM DEVERSON. age 24, height 5 ft. 3 orM in., complexion fair, full face, hair light brown, slight moustache ( light), eyes grey; dress, long black coat with velvet collar, light tweed vest and trousers, blue cap, light lace boots. May be found working in hop gardens. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Turner, Sittingbourne. LANCASHIRE. 21.— Chorley ( County).— For stealing, between 27th and 28th ult., a pair of boots, size 8, plain fronts ( nearly new); 1 razor with white ivory handle; 1 pair men's cotton pants ; 1 light drab cap, raised seams ; 1 blue and white flannel shirt ( much worn); and 5s. 8d.— A MAN, age 25, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion pale, hair light brown ( inclined to curl), moustache very light, eyes blue, hlue dot on one thumb, anchor left arm; wearing old dark blue clothing, blue muffler and the stolen boots and cap. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. 22.— Bootle ( Borough).— For stealing from her lodgings, between 14th and 16th ult., £ 16 10s. and a lady's 9- carat gold dress ring set with blue stones and pearls, one blue stone missing — CATHERINE FITZGERALD, age 25 to 30, height about 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair light brown with curly fringe, eyes grey, thick lips; dress, dark green straw hat trimmed with green shot silk ribbon, plaid blouse ( bluish colour), green plaid tie, black skirt, green smooth cloth double- breasted jacket, brown kid gloves, lace boots. Stated that she was a native of Belfast. She left behind a yellow- painted tin box, containing— a lady's silver Geneva watch, No. 10950; 1 pair pearl cuff links ; 1 oval- shaped gold brooch, minus pin ; 2 gold earrings ( drop) broken ; 1 plain silver ring ; 2 black skirts, lined, H I stitched with white cotton on band of one ; 1 white blouse, fancy needlework on breast; 1 red flannelette blouse, with small black spots; 1 white cotton nightdress; 1 lady's black jacket ( short), leg of mutton sleeves, bound with black cord braid; 1 blue apron with white stripes ; 1 apron with pink, white and blue stripes ; 2 white linen aprons, full size, with neck bands ; 1 blue table cloth with white flowers, worn ; 1 white linen table cloth, worn ; 1 sailor jacket with pearl buttons, trimmed with white braid ( to fit a boy of 5 years) ; 1 black chip straw hat; 1 pair white cotton drawers, needlework round bottoms ; 1 white bath towel with red stripes across ends; 1 bunch of small keys with ivory tablet attached, on which is scratched M. MANN ; 1 imitation crocodile- skin belt with steel fittings and square buckle ; 1 piece of cloth, black and electric blue; 1 sheet of music, entitled " Say a kind word when you can"; 1 pillow case, marked S. T. Lloyd 1330- 1. Supposed a travelling thief, as property was found in her box which has been identified as having been stolen. ISLE OF WIGHT. 18.— Newport ( County).— For an indecent as- sault, 23rd ult., at New Church— FREDERICK CHAMBERS, age 24, height 5 ft. 2 in., stout build, MONMOUTHSHIRE. 25.— Newport ( Borough). — For embezzling, 22nd Feb., about £ 20— JAMES STRATTON, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache brown ; dress, usually grey coat and vest, white moleskin trousers, grey cap, heavy boots. A grocer's porter. Photograph may be seen on application. Warrant issued. 26.— Newport ( Borough).— For embezzling, 7th ult., £ 2 8s.— ISAAC WILLIAMS, age 35, height 5 ft. 64 in., complexion rather dark, hair and mou- stache dark, eyes dark blue, small mole right muscle and left elbow. A baker; native of St. Arvans, near Chepstow. Frequents common lodging houses. Was sentenced 23rd December, 1895, at Newport, to one month imprisonment for larceny. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Sinclair, Newport. LINCOLNSHIRE. £ 1 REWARD. 23.— Grantham ( Borough).— For leaving his son chargeable to the Grantham Union— EDWARD WILLIAM FOX, age 43, height 5 ft. U in., weight 11 stone, round features, hair and moustache dark ginger, scar from bite on one ear and hand. A fitter. Warrant issued. Photograph can be seen on application. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Grantham Union for such information as will lead to the arrest of Fox. Information to Chief Constable Jones, Grantham. 24.— Grimsby ( Borough)— For stealing a cash box containing a bank pass book and cheque book on Messrs. Smith, Ellison & Co.' s Bank, Lincoln, and about £ 8— ERNEST HENTSCHEL, alias F. SMITH, age about 21, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., com- NORFOLK. 27.— Thetford ( County). — For embezzling £ 5 14s. lid.— EDWARD GARNHAM, age 29, height about 5 ft. 7 in., rather stout build, com- plexion florid, full face, hair ( inclined to curl) and moustache light brown ; dress, light tweed pepper and salt jacket and vest, light fine ribbed cord trousers, light cloth peak cap, lace boots. A labourer; has been employed as a baker during the last 18 months ; native of Feltwell, Norfolk. May seek em- ployment at buildings in course of erection. Ab- sconded 12th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wright, East Harling, or Inspector Simpson, Thttford. 28.— Norwich ( City).— PHILIP KEYMER, Case No. 26, 14th January last, not now wanted. Warrant withdrawn. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 29.— Mansfield ( County).— For stealing, 14th ult., a light grey Newmarket overcoat, velvet collar, black and white bone buttons, one missing from back, 2 slits up back, coloured stripe lining, 3 pockets each side— ALEXANDER GRAHAM, alias STEWART, age 33, looks younger, height about 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion very fresh, hair red, clean shaved, curls his hair on forehead; dress, dark coat and vest, black trousers, dark cap, may be wearing the stolen coat. Frequents public houses ; talks of football and draws with burnt matches. Supposed a native of Glasgow. Stated he was a bicycle repairer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hensley, Mansfield. 30.— Newark ( Borough).— For embezzlement— ARTHUR WOOD, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown; dress, light mixture suit, fawn colour dust coat, bowler hat, stand- up collar, supposed brown boots ; was wearing a new silver lever watch, No. 229796. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Challen, Newark, SOMERSETSHIRE. 31.— Bridgwater ( Borough).— For larceny, lst inst.— A MAN, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 7 in., hair and moustache dark; dress, blue coat, dark mixture trousers, black bowler hat, dark tie, patent leather boots. May be found at common lodging houses. 32.— Bridgwater ( Borough). — For causing grievous . bodily harm, 31st ult.— FREDERICK WILLIAM SHORT, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion ( hair and moustache) dark, scar left leg; dress, dark double- breasted coat, dark trousers, black or blue peak cap. Stated he was an army pensioner. Plays a tin whistle in the streets. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Barnett, Bridg- water. FRIDAY, APRIL < S, 1898. THE POLICE GAZETTE. . I 8/'-— Tettenhall ( County). — For failing to notify change of residence— Supervisee GEORGE BRINDLEY, Office No. 180- 98, age 24, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes blue, female tattooed on right forearm, cut mark over left eyebrow, right ankle has been broken. Native of Willenhall. Dress, blue jacket and vest, brown corduroy trousers, white muffler, black hard felt hat and blucher boots. He is a persistent shop thief, and will probably be found travelling the country as a chimney- sweep, accompanied by his wife, staying at common lodging houses. Sentenced at Wolverhampton Sessions, 8th January, 1897, to 12 calendar months hard labour and 2 years police supervision for larceny. Liberated 7th January last. 4128. 37.— Tettenhall ( County).— For stealing, be- tween 11th and 16th ult., 5 cwt. of potatoes at Bushbury— WILLIAM THOMAS RAY, age 28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown ; dress, dark brown coat and vest, dark cloth trousers, blucher boots. A native of Bushbury. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Price, Tettenhall, Wolver- hampton. 38.— Wolverhampton ( Borough).— For steal- ing a hand saw ( recovered), 7th ult.— WALTER BARTLETT, age about 38, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) and heavy moustache dark brown ; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, grey mixture cloth trousers, collar and tie. A carpenter; stated he was a native of Harbourne, Birmingham. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Wolver- hampton. SURREY. 39.— Chertsey ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, face ( pimply) oval, hair and eyes dark, moustache brown, long nose; dress, black overcoat, dark trousers, turn down collar, dark tie, black soft felt hat. He calls at houses, and pro- duces a bogus subscription list in aid of a widow, for whom it is intended to purchase laundry appliances, or to assist a cabman whose horse has dropped dead, to purchase another. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hackman, Chertsey.
