THE POLICE GAZETT PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1897. VOL. XIV., No. 1462. REGU LATIONS. 1. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR or THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enab e action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to eiuible the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. < 3 Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a per sun, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent: and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen jrrope. rty must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or sto'en property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their appreh ension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly re sponsible for any proceedings which may result from such pMicaton. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition no', later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Xew Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond < L- Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE throuoh Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1S83. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTK, may be at once notified to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. THE amount of stolen property at pre- sent " circulated " by the Metropolitan Police has become so inordinately large as to prejudice or destroy the practical value of the records, and it has been found necessary to limit it very consider- ably. It has been decided, therefore, to discontinue the " circulation" in Infor- mations and Pawnbrokers' Lists of all property stolen in the provinces, unless where there are grounds for believing that the property has found its way to the Metropolis. " Chief Constables are re- quested accordingly, when forwarding lists of stolen property to Scotland Yard, to send with them a letter to that effect. And if bills or circulars are received in future, unaccompanied by such a letter, it will be assumed that the " circulation " of the particulars they contain is not desired. The same course will be followed with respect to property lost and persons missing. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT, IVETXIRIDEIR,- 1.— Criminal investigation Ds- partment. — Woodcut portraits and description of Licence Holder QUALIA GIOVANNI alias GUISEPPE RAVETTO and JOSEPH REVELLI, Office No. 3- 387- 98, whose apprehension is sought for Murder, between 28th ult. and 1st inst., age 41, height 5 ft. G in., com- plexion sallow, hair ( very thin on top) and heavy moustache black, eyes hazel, high forehead ( wrinklc- d), deep indenta- tion in chin, scar point of nose and front of chin and 2 left of chin, brown mole right of neck, scar back of left upper arm, back of left wrist, first finger and back of thumb, back of right forearm, on right forefinger, and between second and third right fingers; dress, dark clothes, black felt hat. A Cook. Native of Rochetta, Tonavo, Italy. The first photograph was taken in 1893 and the other in 1896. Warrant issued. 2.— Criminal Investigation Department.— — For being concerned with others, iu custody, for ' conspiring to obtain furniture, etc.. with intent to defraud— FRANK FLEMING, alias WELSH, age 33, I height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion, hair, moustache ! and eyes dark, supposed a small blue scar near risrht 1 check- bone : wearing dark clothes and black hard felt 1 hat. Supposed a native of London. Is believed to have been proprietor of a public- house at Berry Point, : Wales, some years ago. ( See Case No. G7.) Warrant issued. 3.— Criminal Investigation Department.— For forging and uttering, 23rd inst., a cheque for £ 1,550, and obtaining £ 1,500 by nie; ms of such forced cheque- ROBERT SPENCER, alias J. W. PLAYFAIR and HAROLD and CO., age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, slight moustache, light ( turned at ends), eyes ( small) blue, speaks hurriedly: dress, light dust- coat, dark trousers, black hard felt hat; wears gloves, carried a walking- stick with silver top. Had in his possession 14 £ 100 Bank of England notes ( 10 Nos. 0/ 8/ 08794 to 08803, 4 Nos. 0/ 8/ 12764 to 12767% dated London, 7th January, 1897 ; a cheque book on the Capital and Counties Bank, Threadneedle Street, E. C., containing 30 blank cheques, Nos. A 82341 to 82370; a number of cheques on the Devon and Cornwall Banking Company, Plymouth Branch, Nos. from, or to 416797. 4.— P Division.— For embezzlement— CHAR LES NASH, age 23, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, hair light, thin hollow cheeks; dress, brown overcoat, velvet collar, grey trousers, black hard felt hat. A carman. Warrant issued. 5.— P Division.— For robbery with violence, 19th October, 1S96, at Bromlev, Kent— JAMES REEVES, alias WESTERHAM, age 33, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes brown. THOMAS or CREASY YOUNG, age 21, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, hair ( cut short) light; both dressed as labourers, and natives of Bromley Common, Kent. JAMES BAKER, age 2S, height 6 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes blue, varicose veins in legs, cut scar back of left hand ; was seen on 21st inst., when he was wearing raihvav guard's black cloth overcoat, " M. Not to be arrested1 out of the- United Kingdom. 7.— For being concerned, with a man in custody, for conspiring to obtain money by false pretences— CHARLES FOSTER, alias LISTON and JOHNSON, late of 483, Green Lanes, Harringay, N., age 38 to 40, complexion fair, full round face, hair light, clean- shaved ; wearing dark suit and brown frieze overcoat. Appearance of a butcher. JAMES BARRY, late of 10, South Terrace, Northfleet, Kent, age 46, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair, beard and moustache brown; wearing dark clothes, square crown hard felt hat, or blue cloth peak cap. A diver. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 8.— For stealing on or about 10th ult., £ 12— WILLIAM NASH COOK, late of 19, Rochester Square, Camden Town, N. W., age about 35, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion pale, hair black, eyes dark brown; dress blue serge suit, browi^ hard felt hat. A clerk. Warrant issued. BERKSHIRE. 9.— Newbury ( County).— For obtdning, 14i. li inst., £ 1 by false pretences— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., hair dark brown, moustache light, round face; wearing long dark check overcoat, hard felt hat. He called at a greengrocer's, and offered to supply a quantity of apples, etc., and obtained the above sum on account, giving the name of William Reeves. Supposed identical with man, Case No. 13, 29th October last, and Case No. 7, 3rd inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Robotham, Newbury. 10.— Wokingham ( County).— Forobtaining, 20th and 21st ult., a black cloth jacket and vest; a pair grey cloth trousers; and 13s., by false pretences, at Bracknell— THOMAS PULLEN, alias FRENCHY, age 26 ( looks younger), height about 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes light blue, walks slightly lame, can speak French; wearing the stolen clothes, white shirt and collar, white silk tie, black soft hat, lace boots. A native of Winkfield. Is fond of betting. Supposed wanted elsewhere. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Molsher, Wokingham. BRECONSHIRE. 11.— Crickhowell ( County). — For forgery — ALFRED BURROWS, age about 40, height 5 ft 6 or 7 in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, hair, mous- tache and side whiskers dark brown, lame left leg, large ankle with strappings; dress, dark coat and vest, striped trousers, brown bowler hat, dark over- coat. A native of Truro; late superintendent of the London, Edinburgh and Glasgow Assurance Company. Is addicted to drink, and may be found in low com- pany. Warrant issued. 12.— Crickhowell ( County). — For stealing £ 13 14s.— GEORGE FORD, age 27, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion pale, hair ( curled on forehead) very light; dress, dark or grey jacket, cord sleeve vest, moleskin trousers, strong nail boots. A labourer; occasionally collects rags and bones. Supposed known in the East- end of London, Bristol, and Forest of Dean. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Winterson, Crickhowell. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. £ 1 REWARD. 13.— Aylesbury ( County).— For deserting his family in July last, leaving them chargeable to the Aylesbury Union— DANIEL CHERRY, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 in. ( without boots), complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, scar on right thumb and left little finger. A labourer; native of Westcott, Bucks. May be found at public works. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Aylesbury Union for such information as will lead to the arrest of Cherry. Information to Supt. Pitson, Aylesbury. 14.— Buckingham ( County).— For arson, 24th inst.— NORMAN GUBBINS, age 46, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel; dress pilot clcth coat, light cord trousers, peak cap. CARDIGANSHIRE. 15.— Aberystwyth ( County).-- For deserting his wife and family— WILLIAM HENRY DALLISON, age 48, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion and hair dark ( grey), eyes hazel, pock- marked, long scar back of head. A pensioner; late Quartermaster- Sergeant, Cardigan Artillery. A native of London. Last heard of at Nunhend. Warrant issued. . < Information to Supt. Phillips, Aberystwyth. CHESHIRE. 16.— Hazel Grove ( County).— For stealing, 12th ult., at Disley, a mare ( recovered)— JOSEPH POOLE, alias l'OOLEY and FLETCHER, age 50. height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion ruddy, full face, short dark moustache, eyes very dark, is very talka- tive ; dress, long mixture overcoat, dark jacket, grey trousers, brown leggings, hard felt hat. FRANK NEWTON, alias TOM RICHARDS, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, short dark whiskers, long sandy moustache ( dyed), or may now be clean- shaved ; dress, short blue overcoat, with velvet collar, dark grey suit, plaid cap, or hard felt hat. Both are low horse- dealers; natives of Manchester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Oldham, Hazel Grove, near Stockport 17.— Macclesfield ( County).— For housebreaking — JOSEPH REDDISH, alias EDGE, age 23, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, 1st finger ( supposed right hand) deficient at 2nd joint; dress, black coat and vest, black- and- grey striped trousers. A native of Macclesfield. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Downes, Macclesfield. 18.— Middlewich ( County).— For stealing 1 silver Waltham lever watch, 1 silver chain, with Jubilee shilling, attached; 1 pair grey tweed trousers, " Do- lan Bros." on buttons ( nearly new)— JOHN JOHN- SON ( supposed false), age 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes dark; dress, black coat and vest, grey trousers, hard felt hat, lace boots. Stated he was an agent for a cattle insurance company. ( See Cases Nos. 37 and 38,17th inst.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Large, Middlewich. CUMBERLAND. £ 1 REWARD. 19.— Cockermouth( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Cockermouth Union— STEPHEN SPENCER SMITH, age 34, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, thin face, cheeks sunken, hair ( thin on top) light brown, slight moustache light, small side whiskers, round shoulders, slouching gait, stoops forward, turns his toes out. A blacksmith; native of Keswick. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Cockermouth Union for such information as will lead to the arrest of Smith. £ 1 REWARD. 20.— Cockermouth ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Cockermouth Union— MORGAN PRICE, a Welshman, age 40, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., supposed slight mous- tache. About 2 months ago he was living at Usworth, and employed at the Washington Collieries, Durham. Warrant issued". The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Cockermouth Union for such information as will lead to the arrest of Price. Information to Supt. Graham, Cockermouth. DERBYSHIRE. 21.— Langley Mill ( County). — For larceny ( bailee), 13th and 16th ult., at Ilkeston— GEORGE FISHER, late of Station Road, Ilkeston ; age 63, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale; hair, stubby moustache, and side whiskers grey; dress, dark overcoat with check lining, black trousers, brown cap, all much worn. A tailor, native of Newark, Notts. Warrant issued. Information to Superintendent Daybell, Langley Mill. 22.— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For stealing, 9th inst., a pair of boots ( recovered); and a Union plaid skirt, brown- and- white check, very narrow sleeves ( new)— JOSEPH PRIME, age 22, height 5 ft. 6| in. ( without boots), complexion ruddy, hair and eyes brown, clean- shaved; dress, old brownish jacket and vest, supposed cord trousers and dark cap. A labourer. GEORGE MAYCOCK, alias ROBINSON, age 31, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache brown, eyes grey, 3 scars on left leg. A labourer; has been in the Army. May be found at common lodging- houses, or may endeavour to enlist. Both previously convicted. Wan- ant issued. Information to Head Constable Emery, Chester- field. DORSETSHIRE. 23.— Sherborne ( County).— Fordeserting his two children, leaving them chargeable to the Sherborne Union— ERNEST JEFFORD, age 36, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes brown. Hau served in the Army. May be found at public works, etc. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Simpson, Sherborne. DURHAM. £ 5 REWARD. 24.— Durham ( City).— For withholding the sum of £ 72 7s. Id.— GEORGE CORRY, late Treasurer of the Littleburn Branch Lodge of the Durham Miners' Association, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, slight moustache light; dressed usually in black worsted cloth jacket suit and black felt hat. A miner; native of Durham. Absconded 10th inst. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. T. H. Cann, Treasurer of the Durham Miners' Association, for such information as will lead to the apprehension of Corry. £ 5 REWARD. 25. — Durham ( City).— For withholding the sum of £ 79 8s. 4d.— MICHAEL FOX, late treasurer of the Trimdon Grange Branch Lodge of the Durham Miners' Association, age about 37, height about 5 ft. 8J in., complexion fair, hair ( very short) light brown, moustache brown, large blue scar on one cheek; dress, usually, blue serge suit, black felt hat ; fre- quently wears a blue- and- white spotted front and collar combined. A miner; native of Liverpool. Absconded 15th inst. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. T. H. Cann, Treasurer of the Durham Miners' Association, for such information as will lead to the apprehension of Fox. £ 5 REWARD. 26.— Durham ( City).— Woodcut portrait and de- scription of JOSEPH WHITE, late of South Hetton, Durham, whose apprehension is sought for offences under the Trades' Unions Act, age 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, weight about 18 stone, complexion, hair, moustache and eyes dark ; dress, usually in black shooting jacket, black vest and trousers. A miner or check- weighman. Was Secretary of the South Hetton Branch Lodge of the Durham Miners' Association. Absconded 25th ult. May endeavour to leave the country. Was seen at Manchester about 4 th inst. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. T. H. Cann, - Treasurer of the Durham Miners Association, for such information as will lead to the arrest of White. Information to Chief Constable Smith, Durham. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 27.— Swansea ( Borough).— For stealing, 21st inst., a watch ( recovered) and chain— HENRY STEPHENS ( supposed false), age about 26, height about 5 ft. 6 in., stiff build, complexion and hair dark, clean shaved. 2 lower teeth deficient, speaks with Irish accent; dress, dark jacket and vest, dark mixture trousers, black and scarlet tie, brown mix- ture cap; carried a black silk umbrella. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 28.— Swansea ( Borough).— For stealing ( bailee/ £ 15— WINN THOMAS, age 27, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, pimples on face, prominent nose, KRIDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1897. Information to Chief Constable Colquhoun, Swansea. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 29.— Cheltenham ( County). — For stealing a silver horizontal watch, No. 296759, " H. Samuels, Acme," on dial, glass slightly cracked, open face, white dial; and a silver curb chain— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, small moustache light, large mouth ; dress, brown suit, turn- down collar, blue tie, hard hat; wears a ring on one finger, strap on wrist, and a long silver chain across vest. Appearance of a mechanic; stated he was a native of Manchester. He took lodgings, stating he was a carpenter in the employ of the Midland Railway Company. Information to Supt. McRae, Cheltenham. HAMPSHIRE. 30.— Bournemouth ( County) — For obtaining £ 3 by false pretences— G. ELLIOTT, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion and hair dark, moustache very dark ; dress, dark grey suit, black hard hat, brown boots, carried a long brown bag with initials " G. S. E." thereon. He stayed at Temper- ance hotels and used cheques on the London and County Banking Company, Barnet. Stated he came from the Cape about three months ago, and wished to take a Public- House at Bournemouth. He left here 13th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Bournemouth. 31.— Southampton ( Borough).— For larceny— FRED READ, age 30, height 6 ft. 2 in., eyes brown ; walks erect; a draper's porter. Has served in the Gloucestershire Regiment and is now in the Army Reserve. WTarrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southampton. HEREFORDSHIRE. 32. — Watfo rd ( County).— For stealing two bicycles ( recovered) WILIvS, alias WILLIAMS ( sup- posed false) age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complexion fresh, round face, hair and eyes dark, black abrasion under one eye, husky voice; dress, light grey jacket and trousers, grey silk muffler, grey cap, old light boots. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Wymer, Deputy Chief Con- stable, Watford. HERTFORDSHIRE. 33.— St. Albans ( City).— Forlarceny— WILLIAM LAPER, or LEAPER, age 36, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, rather heavy moustache brown, lost one eye; dress, check coat and cap, cord trousers. A native of Nottingham. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Blatch, St. Albans. KENT. 34.— West Mailing ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences— HENRY WYATT, age 44, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion pale, hair ( rather long) black, moustache ( long) and tuft on chin dark, lost left leg and wears wooden one, uses a crutch and stick; wearing black frock- coat, brown hard felt hat. Stated he was a shoemaker. Visits unions, infirmaries, etc. Supposed native of Ipswich. Warrant issiued. Information to Supt. Hoare, West Mailing. 35.— Rochester ( City).— For stealing, 22nd inst., 6 lady's silver watches, fancy dials, bassine cases, Nos. 226942 to 226946 and 226948; 2 ditto, Nos. 29675 and 29692 ; 1 14- carat gold Swiss open face keyless watch; 6 silver alberts, patterns various, tassels at ends ; 1 lady's 9- carat gold open link chain — A man who gave the names of RICHARD HOW- ARD and HOLLAND, age about 35; height, 5 ft. 4 in. ; complexion dark, clean shaved, 2 upper front teeth deficient; dress, light coat and trousers, dark vest, light tie, hard felt hat, old blucher boots; stated he was a carriage builder. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Broadbridge, Rochester. 36.— Tunbridge Wells ( Borough).— For em- bezzling £ 400— FRANK W. HOGBIN, age about 34, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fresh, very high forehead, flat nose with fleshy lump on right side, wide nostrils, hair dark brown, moustache dark, eyes hazel, wide finger nails cut very close; dress, black double- breasted overcoat, dark ( morning) coat and trousers, black cloth gaiters, black hard felt hat.
