Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on. w wd. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not iess rankthan Superintendent: and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chiej officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. J. Annouiccments concerning stolen property mut be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. A nnouncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, ar. d are alphabetically arranged by counties. i> 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen prowiy to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, mu> t, on their appreh elusion or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly re sponsible for any proceedings which may result from such publicaton. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received notlalerthan noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond cfc Co.," Post Office Order payableat Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamns. 13. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Cliief Officers • of Police, when forwarding for identifica- tion by the Metropolitan Police the Photo- graphs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove ti ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous con vie'ions. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— A Division.— For stealing £ 59 14s. Id.— JOHN READINGS, age 40, height 5 ft. 4 in , com- plexion fair, hair light, clean shaved, several small scars on face and bridge of nose ; supposed wearing grey suit. Warrant issued. 2. — E Division.— For obtaining goods and money by false pretences— WILFRED BALL, age 37, height 6 ft., complexion fair, hair and moustache light, eyes hazel, upper lip split, hollow cheeks, long face, prominent teeth ; late of Haverhill, Suffolk. Warrant issued. 3.— E Division.— For stealing a photographic apparatus— REGINALD , age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair and slight moustache light, eyes grey, wears pince- nez, lloman nose, en- larged thumbs ; of military appearance; dress, brown tweed suit, coat sleeves hound with braid, hard felt hat.. May be found at seaside resorts obtaining a living by taking photographs, and may be accom- panied by his wife, age 30, fair complexion. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BERKSHIRE. £ 2 2s. REWARD. 4.— Reading ( Borough).— For deserting his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to the Reading Union— WILLIAM RICHARD GREEN, age 33, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair and mous- tache brown, eyes blue, scar over right eye, under right knee and left leg; dress, dark jacket and vast, grey striped trousers, light check cap, lace boots. A painter. Formerly belonged to the Army Transport Corps, and may endeavour to re- enlist. The above reward will be paid by the Clerk to the Guardians of the Reading Union for such information as will lead to the arrest of Green. Warrant issued. 5.— Reading { Borough).— For stealing 8s., 22nd ult. FITZGERALD, age 38 to ,40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair and slight mous- tache light, eyes blue, rather large head ; dress, blue serge suit, hard felt hat with high crown, brown boots. Had in his possession silk handkerchiefs marked ' C." Wears two rings ( la half- hoop, the other with black stone). Stated he was an electrical engineer on the G. W. R. Warrant issued. 6.— Reading ( Borough). — For stealing, 30th ult., a new " Courier" safety bicycle, 1897 pattern, " Scott's" standard tyres, rat- trap pedals, with toe- clips, flat handle- bar, 1 in. diameter, felt handles ( fluted), saddle by " E. Lycett, Birmingham," No. Lll, geared up to 70, " Brampton" J in. block chain, transfer on head " Chilton Brothers, makers," " Read- ing Gun and Cycle Manufacturing Company " on down tube, pump, bag, and small racer lamp attached. A roan, who gave the name of RICHARD H. NOTTLEY, age 21, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, slight moustache light; dress, black jacket and vest, light trousers, hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 7.— Reading ( Borough).— For stealing, 12th inst., 2 safety bicycles. 1st, a " Speedwell," 28- in. wheels, tangent spokes, " Scott's Standard " tyres, diamond frame, drop handles, " Brady's " saddle, rubber pedals, " B. S. A." cranKs, No. 900 stamped near seat post nut, transfer on head, " E. Dew and Son, Oxforl Road, Reading," " Speedwell" on down tube, " Demon " lamp. 2nd, an " American Crescent," 28- in. wheels, tangent spokes, wooden rims, " Stand- ard " tyres, front forks half plated, " Garford " saut'le, cork handles, gold plate on head, " The Western Wheel Works, Chicago," thereon, No. 9 stamped near saddle— TWO MEN. 1st, age 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion very dark, thin face, hair and moustache dark ; dress, brown check jacket, grey check breeches, black- and- red mixture stockings, blue shirt, green tie, brown canvas shoes. 2nd, age 30, height 5 ft. 3 in., stout build, complexion fair, round face, moustache light, hooked nose; dress, small brown check cycling suit, with Norfolk jacket, grey mixture stockings, white straw hat with black band, black boots. Both spoke with a foreign accent. Warrant issued. Information to Captain Henderson, Chief Con- stable, Reading. BRECONSHIRE. 8.— Brecon ( County).— For forging a bill of exchange for £ 170— THOMAS LUTHER JONES, late manager of the National Provincial Bank, Builth, age 52 to 55, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stout build, complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, clean shared, eyes grey, prominent nose, rather thick lips, short neck, walks erect; dress, grey suit or black coat and vest, and grey trousers, soft hat, lace boots. A native of Bangor, Carnarvonshire. Has resided at Builth for the past 16 years, which placo he left on 21st April last, supposed for London. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Sergeant Watkins, Builth, Brecon- shire. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 9.— Slough ( County).— For stealing, 29th ult., a lady's gold geneva watch, No. 104307, and a lady's 9- carat gold ring, set 4 pearls and 3 corals ( 2 corals deficient)— A MAN, age about 28, height 5 ft, 10 in., slight build, complexion fair, high forehead and cheek bones, hair and moustache light; dress rough blue serge jacket and vest, dark grey trousers, black- and- white check tie, black hard hat, brown lace shoes; was wearing 2 silver chains ( one has a silver star, 2 T H E POLICE G A Z E T T E. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 10.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For stealing, 28th i: lt., a " Humber" " Model C." lady's bicycle, No. - 1430, " Dunlop- Welch " covers on back wheel, " Bee- stun " cover on front wheel, " Brooks' B85 " saddle— A woman, who gave the name of MISS SMITH, age about 23, height 5 ft. 3 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair brown; dress, black dress, sailor hat, brown shoes. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Holland, Cam- bridge. CARNARVONSHIRE. 11.— Bangor ( County)— Woodcut portrait and description of ROBERT HUGHES, whose apprehen- sion is sought for forging a cheque for £ 400, age 42, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, hair ( turning grey) and short stiff moustache dark, walks erect with shorl quick steps; dress, fawn or slate coloured suit, soft black hat. Late Lloyd's shipping agent at Bangui', of which place he is a native. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Inspector Rowland, Bangor. CHESHIRE. 12.— Middlev/ ich ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) household linen, etc.— JANE ROBINSON, alias GOLDING, age 45 to 50, height 4 ft. 11 in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, eyes brown, small and rather sharp- pointed nose; dress, brown plaid shawl, print dress, black bonnet, lace boots. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Large, Middlewich. DEVONSHIRE. 13.— Exeter ( County).— For obtaining £ 135 by a forged cheque— E. W. MARTINUCCI, alias NYE, age about 23, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, clean- shaved, eyes hazel, rather round- shouldered and stoops, 3 teeth only in upper jaw, sharp prominent nose, which he is in the habit of pinching when speaking, thin lips ( upper rather prominent); may be wearing light Norfolk jacket, white flannel trousers and straw hat with coloured band. Had a brown leather portmanteau, containing clothing. A native of London. Warrant issued. 14.— Exeter ( County).— For obtaining £ 46 by false pretences— J. PEARSON, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, round face, eyes brown ; dress, light grey or dark suit, black hard felt hat. M. SINCLAIR, age about 30, height 5 ft, 9 or 10 in., slight build, clean shaved; dress, long black cloth coat, light cloth trousers, large tie with pin, high silk hat. Warrant issued. ESSEX. 15.— Chelmsford ( County).— For stealing a lady's gold geneva watch, white dial, " Muriel" thereon; 1 lady's 18- carat gold curb chain, a spade guinea dated 1793 attached, and a gold locket ( much worn) containing a gentleman's photograph— TWO MEN. 1st, age about 25, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion fair, hair inclined to sandy; dress, dark check jacket and vest, brown trousers, light cord cap, brown canvas shoes. 2nd, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 4 in., long face, hair and eyes dark ; dress, brown jacket and vest, mixture trousers, dark cloth cap, lace boots. They carry a small box with strap attached, and hawk mock jewellery. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 16.— Grays ( County).— For stealing, 4th ult., 1 brown leather bag; 1 set of gold studs; 1 pair silver oblong sleeve links; 1 silver albert, snake pattern, with small seal attached; 1 silver- mounted cherry- wood walking stick ; 1 silk handkerchief ; 1 pair kid gloves ; 1 black peak cap ; and £ 3— MARK ERNEST BURROUGHS, late of 36, Hornby Road, Cambenvell, S. E., age about 26, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion pale, broad flat face, rather flat nose, hair and thin moustache black, upper lip parted from a wound, similar to a hare lip; dress ( when last seen), light check jacket suit, white turn- down collar, white silk tie, white straw hat, low shoes. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 17.— Bristol ( Borough).— For personating an army pensioner, and obtaining £ 3 0s. lid., on 2nd April last— THOMAS ROBERTS, alias EDWARD BRISTO, a navvy, age 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., hair and moustache brown, has a wound below left knee, and frequently attends workhouses and hospitals for treatment. Warrant issued. 18.— Bristol ( Borough).— For larceny ( bailee)— WILLIAM GOULDEN, age 25 to 30, height about 5 ft, 4 in., slight build, hair and slight moustache light. A painter. He rents a house and obtains, on the hire system, furniture, of which he disposes. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 19.— Winchester ( City).— For stealing, 29th ult., a bicycle ( recovered)— JOHN HILL ( supposed false), age about 32, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sun- burnt, hair ( bald in front) light brown, eyes very dark, short thick feet, arms tattooed, female and crown, on one, scar back of head; dress, black jacket and vest, dirty cord trousers, red- and- blaclc tie, black hard felt hat, low shoes ( much worn at toes). Sup- posed a native of Manchester. Warrant issued. 20.— Winchester ( City).— On Commitment War- rant, having been sentenced to one months imprison- ment, for violent assault on his wife— JAMES CUL- VEItWELL, aga 46, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh ( sunburnt), hair brown, eyes hazel; dress, when last seen, brown jacket suit, blue skull- cap. A pen- sioner from the King's Royal Rifles. Has been em- ployed at Cricket Grounds. A native of Easton, near Winchester. Information to Supt. Felton, Winchester. 21. — Southampton ( Borough).— For rape— ALFRED EDMUND LAW, age 34, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes blue, brown scar on right knee; a painter. Has served in the Royal Engineers, and is now in the Army Reserve. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southampton. 22.— Southampton ( Boraugli).— For arson— HENRY TURNER, age about 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, complexion pale, long thin face, hair brown, heavy moustache dark brown; dress, black morning coat and vest, dark brown trousers, skull c. ip, shabby appear- ance. A furniture salesman and clerk. Sup- posed native of Birmingham. May be accompanied by his wife, age 45, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes blue, lame right leg, and a daughter, rge 15. Information to Chief Constable Berry, Southamp- ton. HEREFORDSHIRE. 23.— Ledbury ( County).— For fowl- stealing, 8th inst.— THOMAS HOPE, age 44, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion dark, pock- marked, hair dark brown, eyes dark, bridge of 11039 has been in- jured, supposed burn marks on neck and chest, leans forward wihen walking; dress, bluo coat ( turning brown), brown grey striped trousers, grey cap. A brassfounder, but lately a poultryman. Native of Birmingham. Wan- ant issued. 24.— Ledbury ( County).— For fowl stealing, 8th inst.— A MAN, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion dark ( very sunburnt), hair and moustacha brown, eyes grey, bridge of nose lias been injured ; dress, dark suit, black soft hat, old boots ( fronts cut down). A tramp ; native of Birmingham. 25.— Ledbury ( County).— For larceny, 22nd ult.— LEONARD GOULD, alias DICK SMITH, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache light brown, eyes blue; dress, dark jacket,, blue vest, cord or fustian trousers, black cap, with button on top, strong lace boots. A labourer; na- tive of Worcester, lias friends residing at Newport,, Cardiff and Rhayader. May be found in company of poachers, harvesters, or timber fellers. Warrant issued. Information to. Supt. Phillips, Ledbury. KENT. 26.— Tonbridge ( County).— For breaking out of Union Workhouse, at Tonbridge, 28th ult., and steal- ing 1 brown tweed cloth suit; 1 white cord suit; 1 black hard felt hat; 1 pait^ nailed boots ; 1 pair leather slippers ; 1 blue neckerchief, marked " T. U. W. " ; 2 clasp knives; 1 pair plyers; 1 pair scissors, used for bird- stuffing; 1 pawnticket, for tools pledged at " Wagner's, Tunbridge Wells," and 18s.— SAMUEL TERRY, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, very thin, face, hair and moustache ( stubby) dark, suffers much from indigestion, and shows symptoms of same. Supposed wearing some of the stolen cloth- ing. May be found in a Union Infirmary or Hos- pital. Is believed to be a native of Pembury, Kent. Information to Supt. Bartlett, Tonbridge. 27.— West Mailing ( County).— For stealing beer from a brewery, at Wateringbury— JAMES TETTER- SELL, age about 38, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., com- plexion lair, hair dark brown, eyes ( rather weak) blue; may be wearing glasses; walks badly; dress, old blue serge jacket, cord trousers and vest, P. and O. cap, heavy lace boots; has been in the Army. A native of Brighton. Warrant issued. 28.— West Mailing ( County).— For stealing, 5th ult., at Wateringbury, 3 waggon sheets ( recovered)-- WILLIAM WATTS, age 24, height 5 ft, 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion very dark, small moustache dark; dress, dark blue coat and vest, brown cloth trousers, brown boots, black hard felt hat. A sail- maker. Has the appearance of a Jew. Was seen, 26th ult., going in the direction of Tonbridge, carry- ing a wliite kit- bag. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hoare, West Mailing. 29. — Margate ( Borough).— For stealing, 2 clar- ionets ( recovered) and a cornet, makers, " Riverie and Hawks, Leicester Square, London," on bell, cork set in top of valves-, dent in bell tube, at bend, small dent on tuning slide, B flat, and A natural, shanks " Besson's" silver plated mouthpiece, in black wooden case, lined red cloth, 2 loops to hold shanks, leather strap in lid— GEORGE WILLIAM WOOL- FORD, alias WOODFORD, age about 40, height 5 ft. 11 in. or 6 ft., complexion dark, liair and moustache ( waxed at ends) brown, peculiar in- ward twist of right foot, owing to injury to leg; dress, black coat and vest, grey stripe trousers, grey cap, was invalided from the Grenadier Guards. May endeavour to obtain an engagement as a cornet player, or as a carpenter, or Venetian blind maker. Is accompanied by his wife, age 36, height about 5 ft., very fair complexion, and 2 girls, acres 3h years and 6 months respectively. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Farndale, Margate. LANCASHIRE. 30.— Chorley ( County).— For stealing, 7th inst., at Penworthand, 1 lady's gold- plated watch, marked " Prize Medal Exhibition " ; 1 gold watch- chain, dou- ble link pattern, seal in centre, with black- and- brown stone ; 1 very small gold watch- chain ; 1 gold brooch, link pattern ; 1 silver brooch, marked " Jubilee " ; 1 silver brooch, with gold centre; 2 pairs gold links; 1 navy blue silk muffler, with red stripes; 1 pair brown kid gloves— A man, who gave the name of MERCER, rge about 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, hair red, clean shaved, front teeth de- cayed ; dress, black coat and vest, grey striped trou- sers, blue front and cuffs, purple tie, black hard felt hat, sidespring boots. Stated he was a traveller in the cigar trade. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. 31.— Church ( County).— For stealing, lltli inst., £ 56 15s.— A MAN, age 20, height 5 ft. G or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown ; dress, black jacket and vest, fustian trousers, grey cap, blue spotted neckerchief. A farm servant; native of Blackburn. Campbell, Church. 32.- Rawtenstall ( County).- For obtaining, 25th ult 5s by false pretcnces, at Haslingden— JOHN HARGREAVES, alias JONES and DUXBURY, age FKIDAY, JULY 16, 1897. Procter, Rawtenstall. 33.— Rochdale ( Borough).— For stealing, lGth ult., 1 fawn- coloured cloth costume, with velvet collar and cuffs; 1 green, red and yellow striped flan- nelette chemise; 1 pair black woollen stockings; 1 grey woollen skirt^- MARY ALICE MARSH, age 38 to 40, height about 5 ft. 5 in., sunburnt and freckled, hair brown, eyes blue, several false teeth in upper jaw; dress, black dress, black three- quarter vicuna jacket, round black straw hat trimmed narrow white ribbon. Supposed a native of Leeds. 34.— Rochdale ( Borough). — For larceny— THOMAS RODDY, age 42, height 5 ft. 1\ in., com- plexion fresh, hair, moustache and imperial ( turning grey) brown, eyes grey. Of military appearance. A labourer ; native of Rochdale. 35.— Rochdale ( Borough)— For larceny— JAMES DEVANEY, age 53, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, mole left shoulder, anchor tattooed between left thumb and forefinger, - scar back of neck. A labourer ; native of Rochdale. Information to Chief Constable Buck, Rochdale. LEICESTERSHIRE. 36.— Melton Mowbray ( County)— Forembezzling £ 4 4s. 8d.— HARRY MANNING, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion pale, hair and mous- tache brown, lame; is addicted to drink; dress, old grey tweed suit, light cloth cap, low shoes. A baker ; supposed native of Grantham. May be found jn Yorkshire. Absconded 23rd ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bott, Melton Mowbray. Is fond of cycling, tennis, and cricket. Absconded from Sydney in March last, and is supposed to be in England, with his wife. Photographs may be seen on application. A native of Rhymney, Mon. ; was last seen at Polmont, Stirlingshire, on the 18th ult. He is no doubt suffering from mental depression, and it is feared that some ill has befallen him.
