All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to TIIE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enab C action to be taken upon them by another force. 3 Particu'ars as to stolen property wi'. l be likewise inserted inone issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name an I address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stateil. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen jiroperty, ivill be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, ami of Is. 01. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expensi ot engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a pet oon, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less r auk than Superintendent: and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property mu- t be guaranteed by an officer of not lets rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. A nnouncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, ar. i are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The forcewhich causes particulars concerning delinquents or sto'en property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at owe transmit to the. Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, veil be wholly re sponsible for any proceedings which may result from such jrublicaton. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, eith'r at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond <£•• Co ," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- si., Postal Order, or in Stam" s. 13. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identifica- tion by the Metropolitan Police the Photo- graphs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please sec that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., etc. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. Has represented him- self to be a doctor, and also a solicitor. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. 8.— Reading ( Borough).— For stealing 8s., 22nd ult. FITZGERALD, age 33 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair and slight mous- tache light, eves blue, rather large head ; dress, blue serge suit, hard felt hat with high crown, brown boots. Had in his possession silk handkerchiefs marked " C. ' Wears two rings ( 1 a half- hoop, the other with black stone). Stated he was an electrical engineer on the G. W. K. Warrant issued. REWARD. 7.— Reading ( Borough).— For deserting his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to tho Reading Union— WILLIAM ~ RICHARD GREEN, age 33, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair and mous- tache brown, eyes blue, scar over right eye, under right knee and left leg: dress, dark jacket and vest, grey striped trousers, light check cap, lace boots. A painter. Formerly belonged to the Army Transport Corps, and may endeavour to re- enlist. The above reward will be paid by the Clerk to the Guardians of the Reading Union for such information as will lead to the arrest of Green. Warrant issued. and short stiff moustache dark, walks erect with short quick steps; dress, fawn or slate coloured suit, soft black hat. CHESHIRE. 10. — Middlewich ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a silver English lever watch, No. 46874, maker " George Willis, Northwich," on dial— HARRY ROBINSON ( late of Tiavellers' Rest, Northwich), age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 7 or S in., complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey), whiskers and moustache dark brown ; dress, long brown overcoat, dark suit, hard felt hat, lace boots. DURHAM. 12.— Sunderland ( Borough).— For burglar}', 1st March last, and stealing £ 3,554 in gold and Bank of England notes ( See Case No. 78, 19th March last)— Expiree WILLIAM HENRY RICHARDSON, alias RICHARDS, Office No. 45711, age 61, height 5 ft. 4 in., very stout, complexion clear and bright, hair ( bald on top) grev, moustache and imperial white, eyes brown. Expiree FREDERICK SMITII, alias WILLIAMS and THOMPSON, Office No. 41886, age 33, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark ( sallow), hair dark brown, small moustache black ( which may now be shaved off), beard shaven, eyes brown, cut scar on back of head about inches long, which he tries to hide with his hair. Both dress well. They may endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Huntley, Sunder land. ESSEX. 13.— Chelmsford ( County).— For stealing a lady's gold geneva watch, white dial, " Muriel" thereon; 1 lady's 18- carat gold curb ( hain, a spade guinea dated 1793 attached, and a gold locket ( much worn) containing a gentleman's photograph— TWO MEN. 1st, age about 25, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion fair, hair inclined to sanc'y ; dress, dark check jacket and vesl, brown trousers, light cord cap, brown canvas shoes. 2nd, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 4 in., long face, hair and eyes dark ; dress, brown jacket and vest, mixture trousers, dark cloth cap, lace boots. They carry ji small box with strap attached, and hawk mock jewellery. Accompanied by a man, age about 50, height 5 ft. 9 in., hair turn- ing grey, slight moustache and side whiskers; wear- ing a dark grey suit. A woman, age 45 ; dressed in black; and a youth, age about 16; dress, brown cycling suit and cap, plaid stockings. They took an unfurnished house, 12th ult.. obtained a quantity of furniture, etc., and left for Bristol by the 4.15 a. m. train, 7th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McRae, Cheltenham. HAMPSHIRE. 16.— Winchester ( City).— For stealing, 8th ult. — 7 ladies' gold ring3 ( 1 set double row turquoise ; 1 set single row ditto; 1 supposed set 5 pearls and 4 garnets; 1 set 2 pearls and 1 garnet; 1 antique, hair in centre which turns over; 1 plain centre, " G." en- graved thereon; 1 antique, with hair setting and let- ters round band partly worn off); 4 bracelets ( 1 gold curb chain pattern ; 1 made of caps of verge watches, each circle having a tiger eye stone in centre; 1 silver, composed of coins ( supposed Greek); 1 broad silver ( Indian open pliable work) ; 1 silver Indian bangle ; 1 antique silver cross ( chased), about 3 in. by 2 in.; 1 small gold ditto, about lj in. by 1 in.; 1 small double link gold watch- chain, about 16 in. long, hook one end, swivel the other; several gold lockets, gilt Primrose League badge, etc., on split ring ( 1 locket has a coloured photograph of a gentleman and hair inside) ; 1 gold locket, spray of holly in coral and green enamel; 1 gold Indian filigree diamond shape pendant, drops on three corners, turquoise in each, ring on other, 5 turquoise in centre; 1 gold pin, pearl head; 5 brooches ( 1 silver horseshoe, about 1J in. ; 1 small double coil gold, with green malachite ; 1 small red cornelian, slight gold setting ; 1 small white ditto, gold setting; 1 antique gold, with hair) ; and 4 silver brooches, various shapes— CALLAWAY, alias GEORGE PHILLIPS and C. WOOD, age about 27, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion sallow, long thin face, hair ( thick) very dark, slight mous- tache and eyes dark, slight impediment in his speech, walks with quick step; dress, blue serge double- breasted jacket suit, vest cut low in front, blue shirt front, dark bow necktie, soft brown hat, low shoes. Supposed a waiter; is believed to be an American. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Felton, Winchester. 17.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing, 8th ult., a diamond frame pneumatic safety bicycle, " King of Wheels," black enamelled, makers Coventry Wheel Company, straight handle- bar, ends turned for- ward, " Plot's ' patent ventilated rubber handles, " Dunlop" tyres, twin roller chain, £- in. pitch, de- tachable brake, rat- trap pedals, name in gold trans- fers on red ground, " King of Wheels " on down tube, head and mudguard, leather wallet— AUST FRASCI, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., thick brown beard, speaks with foreign accent; dress, knicker suit and cap, low shoes, fancy stockings; of good appearance. Supposed identical with MAN, Case No. 41, 11th inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 18. — Southampton ( Borough).— For rape— ALFRED EDMUND LAW, age 34, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes blue, brown scar on right knee; a painter. Has served in the Royal Engineers, and is now in the Army Reserve. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southampton. KENT. 19.— Ashford ( County).— For stealing 20 sheep ( re- covered)— SIDNEY LONG, age 25 to 27, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair slight moustache and eyes dark, knock- kneed, turns his right foot out when walking; dress, light tweed suit, tight- fitting trousers, soft felt hat, brown leather gaiters. A cattle dealer of Hothfield. Is fond of shooting. Frequents fairs and markets. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bailey, Ashford. 20.— Dartford ( County).— For stealing a mare ( see Case No. 93, 25th ult.)— A MAN, age about 4J> height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair ( cut close) light, beard, whiskers and moustache sandy ; dress* short dark jacket, cord vest and trousers, neckerchief and cap. Appearance of a labourer. Information to Supt. Sharp, Dartford. 21.— West Mailing ( County).— For stealing, 5th ult., at Wateringbury, 3 waggon sheets ( recovered)— WILLIAM WATTS, age 24, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion very dark, small moustache dark; dress, dark blue coat and vest, brown cloth trousers, brown boots, black hard felt hat. A sail- maker. Has the appearance of a Jew. Was seen, 26th ult., going in the direction of Tonbridge, carry- ing a white kit- bag. Wan- ant issued. Information to Supt. IToare, West Mailing. LANCASHIRE. 22.— Rochdale ( Borough).— For stealing, 16th ult., 1 fawn- coloured cloth costume, with velvet collar and cuffs; 1 green, red and yellow striped flan- nelette chemise; 1 pair black woollen stockings; 1 grey woollen skirt— MARY ALICE MARSH, age 3S to 40, height about 5 ft. 5 in., sunburnt and freckled, hair brown, eves blue, several false teeth in upper jaw; dress, black dress, black three- quarter vicuna jacket, round black straw hat trimmed narrow white ribbon. Supposed a native of Leeds. 23.— Rochdale ( Borough). — For larceny"—• THOMAS RODDY, ace 42, height 5 ft. 7A in., com- plexion fresh, hair, moustache and imperial ( turning grey) brown, eyes^ rey. Of military appearance. A labourer ; native of Rochdale. 24.— Rochdale ( Borough)— Forlarceny— JAMES DEVANEY, age 53, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, mole left shoulder, anchor tattooed between left thumb and forefinger, scar back of neck. A labourer ; native of Rochdale. Information to Chief Constable Buck, Rochdale. LEICESTERSHIRE. 25.— Melton iVIowbray ( County)— For embezzling £ 4 4s. 8d.— HARRY MANNING, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion pale, hair and mous- tache brown, lame; is addicted to drink ; dress, old grey tweed suit, light cloth cap, low shoes. A baker ; supposed native of Grantham. May be found in Yorkshire. Absconded 23rd ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bott, Melton Mowbray. MIDLOTHIAN. 26.— Edinburgh ( County).— For fraudulently ob- taining a pneumatic safety bicycle, diamond frame, makers. Hood and Simpson, Bannyrigg," figure of two men riding cycles, and name of machine, " Rhy- mer," stamped on front of frame, dent on under bar. about 2 in. from pedals, wheels 30 and 28 in. in diameter, wooden rims, painted yellow, tangent spokes, tied with brass wire spokes and frame black enamelled, wheels fitted with " Dunlop " special plain road- racing detachable tyres, " II. B. M." stamped on bub, barrels of wheels, rat- trap pedals, with toeclips, " B. S. A." stamped on pedals. Silver plated bent- handle- bar, cork handles, with white tips, " Brook's " saddle, " B10" stamped thereon, " D" tubing, back fork oval tubing, frame 1895 make, but has been fitted up with 1897 improvements, had no brake, bell or lamp— HERBERT HARRIS, an Englishman, age 20, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair light or sandy, prominent nose, which is slightly bent to the left; dress, slate- coloured tweed jacket and vest, blue sergo trousers, black leather shoes, collar and tie. Said he was in the employment of the Patent Quad- rant Cycle Company, Limited, Birmingham, about 2 years ago. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 27.— Edinburgh ( County).— For rape, Gth ult., GEORGE JACK, a miner, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion fresh, long face, hair and slight moustache light, largo nose ; dress, black corded jacket, light tweed trousers, black felt hat. A native of East Lothian. Has friends at Nelson, Lancashire ; Scotswood, near Newcastle ; Ilouse- O- Muir, East Lothian, and Keeley, Fifeshire. Warrant issued. Not to- be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Colonel Borthwick, Chief Constable, County Buildings, Edinburgh. TUESDAY, JUNE 15, 1 8 9 7 . T H E P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. 9 28.— Edinburgh ( City).— For obtaining, 16th ult., £ 25, by fraud—" LIEUTENANT" BELTON, alias BERTRAM, ago 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion swarthy, thin features, hooked nose, hair and slight moustache dark, large scar right side of neck, slightly bow- legged; wearing naval uniform and yellow boots ; sometimes wears a brown tweed suit. He advertised in local newspapers, offer- ing good situations in South Africa, and repre- senting himself to be a Lieutenant of the Royal Naval Reserve, and had been employed by the Admi ralty to engage a clerk for a Government station, obtaining the £ 25 as security. He was sentenced to G months imprisonment, for theft, at Glasgow, 12th November last, and has been convicted of a similar offence at Stirling. Warrant issued. Information to Cliief Constable Henderson, Edin- burgh. 29.— Edinburgh ( City).— Woodcut portrait and description of GEORGE WHITELAW, a lawyer's clerk, whose apprehension is sought for obtaining £ 150 by a forged cheque, 4th ult.— age 26, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion pale, full face, hair and moustache dark, slouching gait; dress, black jacket and vest, grey trousers, black hard felt hat, brown overcoat. May endeavour to go abroad. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Henderson, Edin- burgh. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 30.— Abergavenny ( County).— For stealing a bicycle ( recovered)— OSWALD RHYS, age 24, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair ( curly) very light ; wearing blue serge suit and brown boots. A solicitor's clerk. Supposed previously convicted. Has friends at Sennybridge, Brecon. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Davies, Abergavenny. NORFOLK. 31.— Wals ingham ( County).— For embezzlement — ALBERT WILLIAM MYHILL, late of Fakenham, age 34, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion llorid, hair and slight moustache brown, eyes grey, large project- ing upper teeth; dress, black rib f uit, black hard hat with mourning band. A shoemaker ; but has recently been employed as a milkman ; he has also been an in- surance agent. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Harvey, Walsingham. 32.— Norwich ( City).— For stealing, 8th ult., a gentleman's 18- carat gold albert chain, long links, with gold eagle, lion and watch- key attached ; 1 oval gold locket, blue enamel, set pearls, thin gold chain attached; 2 silver teaspoons, engraved " L. G. P." ; 1 silver brooch, 2 in., long, comprised of 4 horses ; 2 small Japanese cash- boxes ( one contained a deposit note for £ 100 on " Gurney's" Bank, an old leather purse, containing 5 or 6 pawntickets, issued by " Levine" or " Gamble," Norwich, and a small money- box— F. C. INGLETT, alias C. INGLISS and ALBERT HARDY, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion swarthy, hair ( inclined to curl) very dark, clean- shaved, eyes dark, good teeth ; dress, dark slate- colour suit ( coat- tails rather long), stand- up collar, large dark tie ( light horseshoes thereon), large cuffs, small pearl pin, black hard felt hat, lace boots; usually wears a small silver chain, may be wearing the stolen albert. He lodged at a house for a week, and stated he had » been a clerk at the Stone and Granite Works, near King's Cross, and occasion- ally engaged at music halls ; frequents concert rooms, is an expert at card tricks ; supposed a native of Lon- don.
