All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enab e action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. €. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent: and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. A nnouncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, ar. dare alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. Theforcewhich causes particulars concerning delinquents or sto'enproperty to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their appreh ension or recovery, at once transmit to the. Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly re sponsible for any proceedings which may result from such publicaton. 11. Announcements for the Fi- iday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond is Co ," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has coine under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take ajiy further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is unwilling to incur any expense with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the commu- nication sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United King- dom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course wilNoe apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZETTE is circulated in the Colonies. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— C. O. ( Convict Supervision Office). — For failing to report— Licence Holder WILLIAM JONES, alias WILLIAM HENRY SMITH, THOMAS JACKSON, CHARLES BROWN and GREEN, Office No. 1549- 97, age 66, height 5 ft. 6| in., complexion fresh, hair grey ( nearly bald), eyes grey- green, cut scar left forearm extending to wrist, behind right cheek- bone, lower part of right ear, front of right thigh, above right knee- cap, abscess scar back of right elbow, on neck, lower top of left ear, group of 6 abscess scars on right side of neck, behind left ear, below right nipple, and centre of back. Sentenced, at Glasgow, 9th May, 1892, to 3 years penal servi- tude, and remanent of former sentence, and 7 years police supervision, for theft. Liberated, 19th Mav, 1897. 529. 2.— C Division— For stealing £ 22 19s. 9d.— WALTER THOMAS SCRATCHLEY, age 18, height 5 ft. 8^ in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes grey ; dress, navy blue serge jacket suit, black hard felt hat; shabby appearance ; native of Cardiff. May enlist. Warrant issued. 3.— G Division.— For causing grevious bodily harm— ADA SQUIRES, age 24, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion fair, thin features, large mouth, hair very fair, eyes grey; dress, dark blue jacket, dark dress, black straw hat. Supposed native of Lambeth. May be obtaining her living by prostitution at seaside resorts. 4.— N Division.— Portrait and description of JOHN C. HOWARD, alias JOHN HOWARD and CORNER, whose apprehension is sought for obtain- ing a bicycle by fraud, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion swarthy, black moustache, no beard; dress ( usually), dark clothes, silk hat. Sentenced, at Northampton, 17th January, 1896, to 3 months im- prisonment, for fraud. May seek employment as canvasser for a newspaper. Absconded about 26 th April last. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitaa Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 5.— For obtaining clothing by false pretences, J. GOLDMAN ( lately trading as T. Haywood < fc Co., 97, Upper Thames Street, London, E. C.), age 50, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, side whiskers grey, prominent nose, three fingers of right hand deficient; wearing dark frock- coat and silk hat. A commission agent. Has lately obtained goods from Birmingham in name of SUMMERFIELD. Warrant issued. 6.— For larceny— THOMAS O'GRADY", of 3, Racquet Court, Fleet Street, EC., age about 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and mous- tache fair, long neck, wide hip- bones. Late secretary to the Printers' Labourers' Union. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 7.— For larceny— ARTHUR DENNIS, late of 42, Oaklands Grove, Uxbridge Road, W., age about 27, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexien sallow, hair and moustache thin, limps slightly; well- dressed. A clerk. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, EC. BERKSHIRE. 8.— Reading ( Borough).— For larceny— BERT WELLS, age 21 or 22, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, oval face, hair ( cut short) light, clean shaved; dress, blue serge suit, dark sailor's knot tie, black hard hat, brown boots. Carried a walking- stick, with snakes carved thereon. A groom; native of Whitchurch, Oxfordshire. May seek employment at gentleman's or racing stables. He wrote from Dover, on 27th March last, stating he was on way to Nice. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Capt, Henderson, Head Constable, Reading. CHESHIRE. 9.— Altrincham ( County).— For stealing £ 8, at Partingdon— GEORGE FERRIS, age 25, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion and hair dark, slight light moustache; dress, sleeved waistcoat with velvet back, tight- fitting moleskin trousers, sailor's cap, blucher boots. A ship's cook or able seaman; native of Truro. Warrant issued. 10.— Altrincham ( Countv).— Woodcut portrait and description of WALTER HOWITT HAD- FIELD, whose apprehension is sought, under Tax 2 T H E P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. A painter and sign- writer; native of Buck- hurst Hill. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Womack, Epping. 16.— Maldon ( County).— For obtaining goods by a fictitious cheque on the London and County Bank, 6th ult.— CAPTAIN JOHN OHAPPELL BENNETT ( supposed false), age 50 to 55, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion rather dark, hair and moustache ( turning grey) dark, eyes rather dark; of gentle- manly appearance. Supposed an American. May be accompanied by a woman, age about 20, very short, and a boy, about 5, with fair curly hair. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. HUNTINGDONSHIRE. 22.— Huntingdon ( County).— Woodcut portrait and description of JOHN HAWKES, alias JAMES LOCK, JOHN THORP, WILLIAM JAMES and HENRY HUDSON, whose apprehension is sought for obtaining, 20th April, at Godmanchester, by a worthless cheque, No. G316950, on " J. & C. Simonds & Co., Reading," a grey mare, 14 hands 3 in., 3 years, white streak down face, near hind fetlock white, toes of hind shoes cut short, inner side of front shoes cut away, short tail, broken to harness— age 45, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion ish, hair and moustache dark ( turning grey), GLAMORGANSHIRE. ESSEX. HEREFORDSHIRE. plexion fresh, hair brown, rather heavy moustache and short side whiskers brown. Of good address. Usually dresses in light clothing. Was formerly a reporter, and may seek similar employment. Information to Supt. Britton, Altrincham. 17.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing, 29th ult., £ 36, and a gentleman's gold ring ( East Indian make) — EDWARD MARTIN, age 18, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., stout build, complexion fair, round face, hair light, white sear across back of head; speaks with foreign accent. A mess- room steward; native of Bremer- haven. 11.— Egremont ( County).— For housebreaking, 19th ult., at Liscard, and stealing 1 gentleman's gold watch, white dial, gold fingers; 1 lady's gold hunter watch; 1 lady's gold watch ( very old, and out of re- pair) ; 1 lady's gold chain ( 3 small chains on swivels); 1 pair plain gold bracelets, with small gold chain to fasten, attaohed to each; 1 gold- mounted cat's- eye brooch; 1 gold- mounted brooch, and pair of earrings to match ( tiger's teeth); 1 pair gold- rimmed eye- glasses; 1 Indian sapphire brooch, and pair of gold earrings to match ( horseshoe and riding whip); 1 large cameo brooch, lady's head and bust ( with lamb's head on bust) in white, on brown ground; 1 seven- stone diamond ring ( 1 missing); 1 turquoise ring, broken ( 1 row of turquoise and 2 of pearls) ; 2 gentle- men's silver watches, and £ 10 15s.— A MAN, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion very pale, thin features, hair and side whiskers dark; dress, dark coat, light colour trousers, black hard felt hat. DEVONSHIRE. 12.— Totnes ( County).— For leaving his wife chargeable to the Totnes Union— ROBERT WILSON, alias PETER DILLON, age 34, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, cut scar on forehead, elephant, Highlander, etc., tattooed on arms. A Scotchman. May be employed on board a Glasgow steamer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ryall, Totnes. DURHAM. 13.— South Shields ( Borough).— For indecently assaulting a girl, between 19th December, 1896, and 31st March, 1897- JOHN CURTIS, age about 36, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair light, clean shaved, eyes brown, long thin face, prominent mouth, large teeth, which he shows very much when speaking. A sea- going fireman. May seek employment at gas works. Sailed from the Tyne, on 2nd April last, in the ss. Keroula, to Bilbao, and arrived at Dunkerque, France, on 31st ult., where he deserted, and is sup- posed to have returned to this country in another vessel. Warrant issued. Information tt> Chief Constable Morant, South Shields. 18.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing, 24th ult., bedclothing and wearing apparel— SIDNEY WIL- LIAMS, age 24, height 5 ft. 11 in., muscular build, complexion dark, oval face, hair and small moustache dark, right forefinger recently crushed; dress, dark plaid suit, blue serge cap, black- and- white silk muffler. Has with him a silver watch, No. 1146935. A timber haulier ; native of Little Halford, near Exeter. SU- SANNAH BAKER ( a married woman, who has eloped with above), age 30 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., slight build, complexion fair, thin face ( freckled), hair dark red, thin red eyebrows, eyes blue; dress, black straw hat, navy blue dress, black jacket, brown shawl. Has with her n male child, about 3 months. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 19.— Coleford ( County).— For stealing, 7th ult., a mare, bridle and saddle, at Westbury- on- Severn ( re- covered)—- A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, hair brown, moustache light; dress, light dust overcoat, light brown plaid suit, light tie, with pin, light brown cap, lace boots. Information to Supt. Ford, Coleford. HAMPSHIRE. 20.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing, 14th ult., 1 lady's gold dress ring, set 4 red stones and some small pearls ( has been enlarged) ; 1 lady" s gold mourning ring with hair under glass and inscription " Mabel Jane Henlock Capes, born 16th Sep., 1867, died Feb. 7th, 1887 "; 1 18- carat gold flexible bracelet, set 3 rubies or garnets in centre, with hook for appendage; 1 lady's large flat old- fashioned open face, gold watch, chased back, " Harriett Baker " sup- posed engraved inside, black figures; 1 gold small link albert, with small gold locket and cross at- tached ; 1 brown leather sovereign- purse, 3 compart- ments; 1 yellow leather ditto, 1 compartment, con- taining £ 3 3s.— MATTHEW DISHNER, age 22, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, long face, cut scar right side of nose; dress, double- breasted grey mixture tweed jacket, or brown- and- grey suit, brown skull cap. Believed to be on American. Will pro- bably endeavour to return to America. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. eyes hazel, nose slightly pock- marked; dress, dark blue overcoat, dark cardigan jacket, brown trousers, black hard felt hat. Is identical with the man de- scribed inCase No. 2, 5th March last and supposed identical with the man referred to in Case No. 9, 5th March, and Case No. 57, 23rd April. Also TWO MEN, 1st, age about 25, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion very fresh, small dark moustache; dress, dark clothes, black hard felt hat. He signed the cheque " Charles Hall." 2nd, age about 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., white puffy face, clean- shaved ; dress, dark suit ; appears to act as groom. The cheques used are from a cheque- book lost in August last, numbered 316921 to 50, on " Messrs. J. and C. Simonds & Co., Bankers, Reading," and which they may continue to pass. 23.— Huntingdon ( County).— For stealing, 7th inst., a " Camden " bicycle, new " Beeston " tyres, rat- trap pedals, American pattern, " Huntingdon" stamped inside pedal cranks, lamp, 4 mudguard clips for detachable mud- guards*— A man, who gave the name of WILLIAM GEORGE, of 14 or 17, High Street, Peterborough, age about 20, short, slight build, complexion light, moustache slight, wearing a grey suit and cap. 24.— Huntingdon ( County).— Woodcut portrait and description of FREDERICK ALBERT DENNI- SON, alias LITTLEDYKE and WILLIAMS, whose 14.— Chelmsford ( County).— For attempting to criminally awaolfe » girl age 15— HARRY BOVER, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., thick set, com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, moustache sandy; dress, dark cloth jacket, light cord trousers and vest, cloth cup. A brieklaver ; native of Woodham Ferris; belong* to the Ewej Militia. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelms- ford. 21.— Weobley ( County).— For wounding and causing grievous bodily harm— WILLIAM ORGAN, age about 24, height 5 ft. 8 in., strong build, com- plexion sallow, hnir dark, slight light moustache, eyes grey; dress, light large plaid jacket ( with velvet collar), vest to match, cord trousers, strong nail boots. Has travelled the country with a van, hawking baskets, mats, etc. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Strangward, Weobley. apprehension is sought for stealing, 26th April last, a " Raglan" bicycle, 1894- pattern, wide handle- bars, rubber handles, No. 22872 on bar, smooth " Dunlop " tyres, no brake or mud- guard ( nearly new), nge 28, height 5 ft. 11J in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, moustache dark. A rope maker; native of Stamford. He represents himself to be a railway FRIDAY, JUNK 11, 1897. Supposed wanted for similar offences at Hatfield, Hertford, Hitchin, and Hammersmith. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Copping1, Huntingdon. 25.— St. Neots ( County).— For attempting to pass a worthless cheque for .£ 281 on the Bucks and Oxon Bank, Limited, Buckingham, on 27th ult.— A MAN, age 28 to 30, height about 5 ft. 8 in.; dress, light suit, brown dust- coat, brown hard felt hat. Has the appearance of a dealer, and speaks in a sharp manner. Is supposed to be in league with JOHN HAWKES, Case No. 22. Information to Supt. Freestone, St. Neots. KENT. 26.— Chatham ( County).— For leaving his wife and family chargeable to the Strood Union— JOHN JAMES YOUSEMAN, age 37, height 5 ft. 1 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache light, eyes blue, cut scar on chin. A cement labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lacy, Chatham. 27.-— Cranbrook ( County).— For the abductionof a girl— WILLIAM WHITE- MAN, age 35, height C ft., complexion fair, hair very light, brown, eyes blue, moustache light; dress, light plaid suit, black hard felt hat, lace boots. A cattle dealer. Maybe in the company of the girl, Lilly Judgp, age 17, height 5 ft. 1 in , complexion and hair fair; dressed in dark e'othes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Fowle, Cranbrook. 28.— Tonbridge ( County).— For stealing, 27th April, a bicycle ( recovered!— WALTER HUNTLEY, alias WILLIAM HUNTLEY, WALTER DAVIS and EDWARD CHARLES DAVEY, age 25, height 5 ft. 4 J in., complexion pale, Roman nose, hair light brown, slight moustache light, eyes blue, boil scar right fore- arm ; dress, black curl cloth jacket and vest, navy- blue " doth trousers, red tie, black cap with fancy work on top. Native of Dover. Has been employed as a milkman, and may seek a similar situation. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bartlett, Tonbridge. 29.— Ramsgate ( Borough,). — Woodcut portrait and description of JOHN SAMUEL FISHER, alias JOHN SAMUEL MURRAY FISHER and JOHN SAMUEL BLAGROVE FISHER, whose apprehension is sought for obtaining goods on credit while bei » g an undischarged bankrupt, age 49, height 5 ft. 5 or G in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown; dress ( usually), black or dark clothes. A native of Abing- don, Berks. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Ross, Ranusgate. LANCASHIRE. 30.— Garstang ( County).— For embezzling £ 24— GEORGE W. JOHNSTON, age 26, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, moustache sandy, eyes blue. A clerk ; native of Blackburn. Warrant issued. Infsrmation to Supt. Bourke, Garstang. 31.— Leigh ( County).— For stealing a safety bicvole, makers " Buckingham and Adams, 1895, Model C," " Armstrong" rat- trap pedals," Anti- Auto" tyre front wheel, " Clincher " tyre ( badly cut), back wheel, " Sheldon's" lady's saddle, Btraight handle- bar, wood handles, black celluloid tips, had attached a " Powell and Hanmer " Demon lamp— EDWARD HULMES, age 22, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion sallow, hair light brown, eyes blue, prominent nose; dress, black worsted coat and vest, black serge trou- sers, odd lace boots, brown cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Higginbotham, Leigh. 32.— Prescot ( County).— On warrants, for failing to attend an audit of accounts of the Township of Much Wolton and other townships, for which he was assistant overseer— ELIJAH BAXTER, age about 45, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion ruddy, hair, whiskers and moustache ( turning grey and cut short) dark, large nose, of dissipated appearance, is fond of bet- ting ; dress, grey overcoat, black coat and vest, dark tweed trousers, billycock hat. May endeavour to leave the country. Information to Supt. Baxendale, Prescot. 33.— Blackburn ( Borough).— For stealing, 5th inst., £ 46— WALTER F. PAYNE, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion sallow, long thin face, hair and long moustache light brown, eyes grey, lame right foot; dress, black jacket and vest, grey mixture trou- sers ( with narrow red stripe), light tweed cap, button boots. A clerk; native of London. Absconded 5th inst. May endeavour to leave the country. Recently came from South Africa; to which place he stated his intention of returning. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Lewis, Blackburn. 34.— Rochdale ( Borough).— For stealing wearing apparel from his lodgings— SAMUEL LEWIS, alias GEORGE MORRIS and LEWIS KNIGHT, age 41, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion sallow, hair dark ( bald on top and front of head), eyes blue ( rather large), cut mark 1st left finger; wearing dark suit. Stated he was a checker in the goods department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway ; also that he had friends at St. Helens. Supposed a native of Leeds. Information to Chief Constable Buck, Rochdale.
