ICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAKD, LONDON, S. W. • 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In ail cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. • 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the. signature of an officer of not cess rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough , as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property muit be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. A nnouncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or sto'en property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the. Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the ann mncementfor insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which mag result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received notlaterthan noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be dearly written on erne side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond dk Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps, 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identifica- tion by the Metropolitan Police the Photo- graphs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. Cannot speak English; dress, dark overcoat, speckled trousers, light cloth cap or silk hat, button boots. Warrant issued. CITY OF LONDON. 3.— For failing to surrender to his bail, 12th inst., charged with fraud— CHARLES HAMLYN, alias HENRY MILLER, A. H. STONE, etc., late of 14, Holborn, and Matford Hall, Exeter, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair and moustache light, eyes ( rather sunken) hazel, mumbles when speaking; dresses weM. Ab- sconded about 29th ult. May be accompanied by his wife, height about 5 ft. 4 in. Warrant issued. Hyde Park Mansions, W., whose apprehension is sought, for forgery, age 55 to 60, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion ruddy, hair, whiskers ( cut to point) and moustache iron grey, well- built; of good address and distinguished appearance; dress, dark chesterfield overcoat, dark suit, high silk hat with mourning band. An artificial flower manufacturer. A Welshman. Is well- known in the North of England. Warrant issued. 6.— For housebreaking and assault— ALBERT EDWARD WRAIGHT, alias BANDY WRAIGHT, age 29, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes brown, swing- ing gait; dress, light fawn jaoket, cardigan jacket, police uniform trousers, black alpine hat. An Army Reservist of the 3rd Grenadier Guards; native of Swanscombe, Kent. May be employed at gasworks. Warrant issued. Information to Supt McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BERKSHIRE. 7.— Maidenhead ( County).— For housebreaking, Nth inst., and stealing 1 pair gold eye- glasses ( old), and about £ 4— TWO MEN. 1st, age 35 to 38, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion ( supposed) dark, wearing dark overcoat, silk hat, small tie. 2nd, age 35 to 38, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., supposed fair com- plexion, wearing brown overcoat, white muffler, silk hat. Information to Supt Dorrell, Maidenhead. 8.— Reading ( County).— For embezzlement, at Mortimer— CHARLES GRAINGER, age 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes grey, round- shouldered; dress, brown check suit, black hard hat. A native of Wokingham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pocock, Reading. 9.— Reading ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, 4th inst., £ 4— A man, who gave the name of DOBSON, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion and hair ( turning grey) dark, moustache brown, eyes dark ; dress, fawn coloured covert coat, dark suit, gutta percha collar, broad tie with dark horseshoe pin with white centre, lace boots. Represented himself to be a canvasser for the Prudential Assurance Co., and endeavoured to obtain employment at the local branch ; stated his intention of going to Oxford. Warrant issued. 10.— Reading ( Borough).— For obtaining money by false pretences— ARTHUR DUDLEY JACKSON, age about 23, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., hair dark brown, slight light moustache, eyes brown, right foot very flat. Has worked at boot repairing shops, and was recently employed as a canvasser by a firm of watchmakers. Is said to be well known at Petersfield, Slough, Portsmouth, Portsea and Guild- ford. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. CHESHIRE. 11.— Altrincham ( County).— For deserting his family— THOMAS HENRY BANNER, age 33, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, eyes grey, face blotched; dress, black jacket, cord trousers, brown cap. A brick- layer's labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Britton, Altrincham. 12.— Egremont ( County).— For stealing, 30th ult., from an hotel at West Kirby, 1 dull srold brooch, diamond in centre, in an oval- shaped morocco leather case, vacant place for earring at each end; 1 gold brooch, made out of 2 earrings, to match the above, with diamond in centre of each earring; 1 gold chain bracelet; 1 gold bracelet, oval shape, with clasp and chain, in case lined with blue veivet, and stamped " Burns, Bold Street, Liverpool"; 1 lady's gold ring, set 3 diamonds; 1 lady's gold ring, set 1 diamond ( set rather high); 1 lady's gold chain ( thin), had attached a watch key and a small gold locket; 1 gold safety- pin, horse- shoe pattern, set pearls; 1 gold ( large size) breast pin, horse- shoe pattern, set 5 diamonds, and a black and red silk tie, in which the breast- pin was fastened; 1 black onyx brooch, about 1 in. in length, oval shape, with shape of bird, con- sisting of pearls in centre; 1 dark grey overcoat, sacque shape, partly lined with black silk, 2 pockets and ticket- pocket inside, and usual pockets outside, which contained several letters and 3 telegrams, ad- dressed " Mr. Seddon, Marysville, King's Gap, Hoy- lake," and some " Mr. Seddon. New Hydro. Hotel, West Kirby"; 1 soft black felt hat, American shape, high crown; 1 black mask, trimmed with black lace, about 2 in. long; 1 dark brown leather purse, con- taining £ 4 or £ 5 in gold; 1 ordinary fold- over purse, containing 10s. in silver, and several postage stamps. — JOSEPH REYNOLDS ( supposed false), age about 37, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, face blotched, long thin features, hair ( thin on top) and long moustache brown, one eye bloodshot, mark over left eye, small scar on nose, of dissipated appear- ance; wearing the stolen overcoat and hat, dark grey trousers, patent composition cutis and collar. Sup- posed a clever hotel thief. Information to Chief Supt. Hindley, Egremont. CUMBERLAND. 13.— Penrith ( County).— For deserting his wife and 3 children, leaving them chargeable to the Alston and Garrigell Union— MARTIN McGREVY, age about 56, height 6 ft. 1 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair ( thin) and eyes grey, 2 boil marks on neck, 1 on left thigh. Tramps the county, sharpening saws. Frequents common lodging- houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bell, Penrith. DENBIGHSHIRE. 14.— Wrexham ( County).— For stealing a suit of clothes— GEORGE JONES, age 36, height 5 ft. 8A in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark brown, has lost two upper front teeth, stoops when walking; dress, dark jacket and vest, postman's trou- sers. An Army Reservist; native of Ruabon. He was sentenced to one month imprisonment at Welshpool, in October last, for stealing tools, in name of WIL- LIAM ANSON. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Jones, Wrexham. DEVONSHIRE. 15.— Exeter ( County).— For stealing ( by trick) 25 fowls— A. J. COOPER, age 36, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., hair, side whiskers and moustache dark, large feet, stoops slightly; dress, dark brown plaid suit ( may be wearing striped trousers), long brown over- coat with plaid lining, black or brown felt hat. He advertises for fowls, and after obtaining possession decamps without paying. Left Newton Abbott, for Paddington, 3rd ult. Had in his possession a big chestnut horse. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter. DUBLIN. 16.— Dublin ( City).— For embezzling, on 21st September last,£ 222, the moneys of H. M. Postmaster- General— JAMES BURSLEM LOVEROCK, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, com- plexion pale, heavy sandy moustache, prominent nose, large eyes; when last seen wore dark overcoat, black hat. An ex- clerk at the General Post Office, Dublin. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lanktree, Detective Depart- ment, Exchange Court, Dublin. ESSEX. 17.— Epping ( County).— For deserting his wife and four children, leaving them chargeable to the Ongar Union - CHARLES HERBERT MARTIN, age 34, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion ruddy, hair dark, eyes brown. An engine driver. Native of Blackmore. Was last seen at Plaistow. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Womack, Epping. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 18.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For shopbreaking— ERNEST , age 24, height 5 ft. 4 in., liair dark brown, small dark moustache; dress, long dark brown overcoat with velvet collar, dark blue jacket and vest, brown stripe trousers, dark blue peak cap, striped silk neckerchief, wore a gold ring set with stone on little finger. GEORGE or HARRY , age 18, height 5 ft., complexion dark, hair light brown, eyes dark, small nose, one upper front tooth broken, knees appear to be weak; dress, short dark blue overcoat, dark jacket and vest, black and brown plaid trousers, seaman's cap, blue silk neckerchief, wore gold ring with stone on little finger. ( See Case No. 80, 27th November, 1896.) 19.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing, 31st ult., from his lodgings, 1 nearly new dark grey double- breasted Irish frieze overcoat, 4 outside pockets, plaid lining; 1 boy's fawn- coloured overcoat with cape; 1 boy's Oxford print shirt; 1 pair lace boots, size 7, worn ; 2 new white butchers' smocks, large size, supposed marked " Tucker & Co., Ld., Bath"; 1 plain silver cup, 6 or 7 in. high— ARTHUR WOODS, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, bow legged; dress, black ( morning coat) worsted suit, red, white and blue muffler, grey or blue serge cap, and the stolen boots. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. HAMPSHIRE. 20.— Bournemouth ( County).— For stealing, 18th inst., 1 gentleman's silver lever watch, minute hand bent, dial cracked, very dirty case; 2 ladies' silver geneva watches, Nos. 57533 and 9304 ; 1 gentleman's silver geneva hunter watch, No. 24512, two initials engraved on ease ; 1 gentleman's silver Waltham lever watch, No. 1788544 ; 1 lady's gold geneva lever watch, visible movements, bow nearly worn through, 423 scratched on bevel; 1 lady's gold watch- case, No. 92380; 1 gentleman's silver English lever, with jeunette glass— A man, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 7 in., slight moustache sandy; dress, light tweed jacket, black hard felt hat, carried a whip. Appearance of a costermonger. 21.— Bournemouth ( County).— For obtaining,. 14th inst., by false pretences, £ 50 gold, and £ 50 in Bank of England £ 5 notes, Nos. 22716, 22717, 22718, 22719, 22865, 25098, 42532, 97845, 99758, and 22864, from the London and Midland Bank— WALTER BOND, late of Alexander Road, Moss Side, Manchester, and late manager of Moss Side Branch of the London and Midland Bank, age about 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., long face, thick lips, prominent nose, large ears, clean- shaved. When last seen was wearing long grey overcoat, with velvet collar, and cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Bournemouth. 22.— Winchester ( City) — Woodcut portrait and description of ALFRED OFFER, whose apprehension is sought for embezzlement, age 47, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( cut short, turning grey), moustache and eyes brown, full face, high forehead, right eyebrow missing, several pock- marks on face, short neck and legs; dress ( when last seen, 7th inst.), dark blue chesterfield overcoat ( black vel- vet collar), dark cloth trousers, dark brown soft felt hat with wide brim. Had with him a new brown leather portmanteau, a small black hand- bag, and 3 paper parcels, containing a new grey worsted cloth suit ( morning coat), a black serge suit, 2 pairs of lace boots, a black mackintosh, walking stick, umbrella and a large pair of field- glasses. A master painter; native of Winchester. A Past Provincial Grand Master of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows ; late Secretary of the Industry of Hants Lodge, and has in his possession about £ 200 belonging to that Society. Associates with betting men. Is fond of billiards. The photograph was taken about 9 years ago. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Felton, Winchester. 23.— Southampton ( Borough).— Forfailingtosur- render to his bail on 7th inst., charged with stealing lead— WALTER EDMUNDS, age 57, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair and eyes grey, cut mark left thumb, prominent nose, stoops slightly. Is ad- dicted to drink; may be found in the company of prostitutes. A lodging- house keeper. Supposed to have left Southampton about 26th ult., when he had in his possession about £ 600. Was accompanied by a woman, age 29, height 5 ft. £ in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southampton. HEREFORDSHIRE. 24.— Leominster ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) 24th ult., a gentleman's safety bicycle, " The Eclipse Machine Co., Oldham," on head and back mud- guard, " Rothwell" on frame in gold letters ( partly erased), pneumatic tyres ( front smooth, back non- slipping, worn), direct spokes, handle- bar, stem and seat- rod newly plated, new copper rivets in front of saddle— JOHN FLACKET, alias II. JONES, age 24 to 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair black, slight dark moustache, whiskers of about a week's growth ; dress, long double- breasted overcoat, two vests, dark cloth trousers, peak cap ( supposed), militia boots. TUESDAY, JANUARY 12, 1897. T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 3 A corporal of the 4th Battalion North Staffordshire Militia; native of Lichfield, Staffordshire. Warrant issued. 25.— Leominster ( County).— For obtaining £ 18 by means of a trick— A man known as CURLEY, of Leicester, age 25 to 28, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( curly at back) and slight mous- tache light, rather long features; dress ( when last • seen), light suit, long drab- coloured overcoat, drab- coloured hat. Supposed native of Leicester. JOE BIRD, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion, hair and slight moustache dark; dress ( when last seen), dark jacket with skirts, vest and trousers, black hard felt hat. Supposed native of Birmingham. These men are horse- copers, and attend fairs, reposi- tories, etc., and are known at Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, and other large towns. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ovens, Leominster. 26.— Hereford ( City).— For failing to report— • Supervisee WILLIAM HARRIS, Office No. 39788, age 58, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion ruddy, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes < rrey, scar left knee, left shin, and top of head. Sentenced at Hereford, 30th December, 1889, to 6 months hard labour and 7 years police supervision, for larceny. Information to the Chief Constable, Hereford. HERTFORDSHIRE. 27.— Hemel Hempstead ( County).— For neglect- ing to maintain his child— HENRY PARKER, alias SMITH and LOVERIDGE, age about 45, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion very dark, hair, moustache and beard dark, eyes hazel; dress, old dirty clothes, short gaiters, soft felt hat, painted crown. Travels the country, repairing umbrellas. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Frogley, Hemel Hempstead. 28.— Watford ( County).— For larceny ( bailee) — FRANK SMEDLEY, alias FRANCIS GEORGE SEA- GRAVE, age 34, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes grey, wears folding glasses. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Wymer, Deputy Chief Con- stable, Watford. ISLE OF ELY. 29.— Wisbech ( County).— For housebreaking, 24th ult., at Leverington— WILLIAM HUTCHIN- SON, alias JOHN McDONALD, JOSEPH HODG- SON, JOSEPH HUTCHINSON, WILLIAM SMITH, etc., age about 70, height 5 ft. 6 in., round face, hair, small side whiskers and eyes grey, tattoo marks on chest and belly, etc.; dress, short dark overcoat, cord vest and trousers ( trousers newly seated), light cloth cap with knob on top, new lace boots. Previously convicted at Swaffham, Northallerton, Hull, Norwich, Ely, and Southampton. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Dockerill, Wisbech. KENT. 30.— Sandgate ( County).— For deserting his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to the Elham Union, 31st October, 1896— JAMES THOMAS CUR- TIS, age 50, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, com- plexion fair, ginger moustache, cut scar left wrist; dress, dark cloth jacket, check vest, cord trousers, cloth cap, heavy lace boots. Late of Cheriton. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Waghorn, Sandgate. 31.— Folkestone ( Borough).— For embezzling £ 3 10s. 0d.— THOMAS YOUNG, age 21, height 5 ft. 11 in., rather stout build, complexion fair, hair light, sharp nose; well dressed. Late a pianoforte maker's manager. Is well known as an amateur vocalist in East Kent. May seek employment in theatrical or operatic companies, or at music halls. Absconded 5th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Folkestone. 32.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For stealing, on or about 7th inst., 1 spade guinea; 1 silver coin- brooch ; 1 gold scarf- pin, set yellow stone; 1 gold albert chain; 2 gold pencil- cases— WILLIAM DOUBLE, alias TRICKER, age 47, height 5 ft. 6f in., very red full face, hair dark brown, moustache light brown. Is addicted to drink ; dress, dirty grey suit, soft black hat dented at top ( may be wearing a dark overcoat). A pensioner from the 16th Bedfordshire Regiment. Appearance of a seafaring man. Is in the habit of saying, " Poor old Bill! Call me back again." Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Mackintosh, Maid- stone. LANARKSHIRE. 33.— Motherwell ( County).— Portrait and des- cription of JAMES M'GHEE, whose apprehension is sought for culpable homicide, at " VVishaw, 4th inst., age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., com- plexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, fresh cut mark on foiehead, walks erect, of smart appearance; dress, black cord coat and vest, dark striped trousers, black hard hat, red tie with black spots, light lace boots. An ironwork's labourer. Native of Balleymena, Ireland. Has in his possession a silver lever watch, No. 90455, and silver chain, of which he may endeavour to dispose. May also have a revolver. Information to Supt. Morrison, Motherwell. These men are in the habit of visiting grocers stores, and are well known in the North of England to persons who attend auction sales where provisions are sold, and to those who associate with or buy from long firm swindlers.
