GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JANUARY 1, 1897. VOL. XIV., No. 1358. REGU L^ TIOHXTS. 1. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in, one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the. signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against, him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. Theforcewhich causes particulars concerning delinquents or sto'en property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the. Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the am,. wncementfor insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be dearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompamcd by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond dk Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identifica- tion by the Metropolitan Police the Photo- graphs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g.:— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of sticli particulars in dealing with previous convictions. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— Criminal Investigation Department. — For obtaining money by false pretences— E. EVANS, alias WILLIAM DAWKIN, EDWARDS, TURNER, etc., age about 50, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion sallow, hair, moustache and straggling whiskers dark ( turning grey), eyes grey, very plausi- ble manner, speaks with either Scotch or Irish accent; dress, black frock- coat, dark trousers, high hat. He calls on persons who have recently brought out an in- vention, representing that he is sent by the editor of a newspaper to get the particulars of the invention, in order that an article may be inserted in the paper, and then obtains a small sum of money for a certain number of papers which are to contain the article which he states he is about to write. Warrant issued. 2.— F Division.— For stealing a black canvas portmanteau, containing 1 blue beaver overcoat, vel- vet collar, lined Italian cloth ; 1 pair black trousers ; 1 pair grey cloth ditto ; 1 black diagonal cloth vest; 1 navy blue serge suit; 1 white linen shirt; several linen collars and ties ; 1 clothes brush ; 1 hair brush ; 1 comb; 1 set crystal studs; 1 silver seal; 1 photo- graph of a man; 1 pair brown boots ; and a small japanned cash- box, containing 13s. — JOHN NAGLE, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes dark, clean- shaved; dress ( sup- posed), blue serge suit, black felt hat. A stable- man ; native of Nenagh, Tipperary. Warrant issued. 3.— G. Division.— For stealing, 1st ult., 2 gold safety- pin brooches, set turquoise and pearls ( one re- covered), and a lady's 18- carat gold dress ring, set 10 old brilliants— W. II. THOMPSON, alias HENRY VERNON, age about 33, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., com- plexion sallow, hair ( very thin) and moustache light brown, slight cast in one eye ( supposed right); dress, black morning coat and vest, dark trousers, blue cravat, black hard felt hat; shabby appearance. Warrant issued. 4.— G. Division.— For obtaining, 22nd ult., 18 diamonds, value £ 43 15s. 0d., by means of a worth- less cheque on the London and South Western Bank, Notting Hill Branch— LOUIS W. SPYERS, a Dutch Jew, age about 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light; dresses well, wears long light or dark overcoat, high silk hat or light cap, button boots. Native of Amsterdam. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 5.— Forforgery.— LUKE LEO JAMESDURANT, late of 28, St. Martin's Lane, Cannon Street,, E. C., and 47, New Cross Road, S. E., age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 10 in. to 6 ft., slight build, complexion fresh, hair and long moustache ( curled at ends) light; of gentle- manly appearance; dresses well. Warrant issued. 6.— For embezzlement— J. F. GLADWIN, late of 2, Gresham Road, Brixton, age 24, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, clean- shaved, hair ( bushy) brown, square- shaped head, coming to point at chin, left arm slightly bent; dress, light fawn overcoat, dark jacket suit, low- crowned wide- brimmed felt hat. A clerk. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 7.— For stealing money— ALFRED HENRY SHARMAN, late of 13, Shacklewell Row, Dalston, age 32, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, rather red face, hair and slight moustache light; dresses well. A checker on the Midland Railway. Absconded 12tlh. ult. Is accompanied by his wife, age 34, tall, of delicate appearance. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. BRECONSHIRE. 8.— Brecon ( County).— For failing to appear to a witness summons— TOM BROWN, alias BRUM, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, complexion freslh, heavy brown moustache, eyes hazel or brown; dress, cloth jacket, moleskin trousers, cloth cap, heavy boots. JOHN WILSON, alias PUNCH, age 28, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, clean- shaved, eyes grey; dress, cloth jacket and vest, slate- colour cord trousers, strong boots. Navvies. May be found on public works. Warrant issue?. Information to Sergt. Lloyd, Cefncoed, near Mer- thyr Tydfil. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 9.— Cambridge [ Borough).— For stealing, 22nd ult., 1 gentleman's gold watch, No. 17907, open face, white dial, crystal glass, key winding, " Pre- sented to F. W. H. Ginn, by his parents, on his 21st birthday, Nov., 11th, 1894," engraved on inner case, initials " F. W. H. G." on back; 1 gold curb- pattern chain with spade half- guinea pendant, dated about 200 years ago, and a lizard- skin purse, containing some' bills and about £ 1 18s. 0d.— FRED DONO- VAN, age about 18, height about 5 ft. 7 in., hair dark brown, blind left eye ( eyelid closed); dress, shabby grey suit, peak cap. A plumber. He stated he had been sent to execute some repairs, and was allowed to go to the upper part of the house, where he remained about five minutes, and left, taking the articles with him. He left Cambridge by the 2.15 p. m. train, 22nd ult., booking for King's Cross on his way to Caterham, or New Cross, when he was carrying a wooden box, about 2 ft. long, tied with cord. Winter, 25, Little Underbank, Stockport," on move- ment ; 1 lady's 18- carat gold lever watch, No. 90346, engraved case, extra jewelled, " Thomas Russell and Son, Liverpool," on movement, " Thomas Russell and Son, made for J. Winter, Stockport," on dial; and a large 18- carat single- stone diamond ring, pure white flawless stone, weight about 2} carats, carved setting ; age about. 25, height 5 ft. 5 in., inclined to be stout, complexion fresh, hair light brown, slight light moustache, of smart appearance ; may endeavour to leave the country. A marine store dealer. Is accompanied by his wife, age about 25, height 5 ft. 1 in., slight build, complexion fresh. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Jones, Stockport. CUMBERLAND. £ 1 REWARD. 11.— Penrith ( County).— For deserting his three children, leaving them chargeable to the Penrith Union— JAMES HEWER, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., hair and moustache dark, round features. A quarryman; native of Cumberland. Is probably working in a quarry in the North of England or in Scotland. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Penrith Union for the apprehension of Ilewer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bell, Penrith. DEVONSHIRE. 12.— Barnstaple ( Borough).— On commitment warrant for non- payment of fines and costs— THOMAS DEANE, age about 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair light brown, heavy sandy moustache. HARRY DEANE, brother of above, age 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, moustache red- Both are brick- layers, and may be found on public works, etc. Information to Chief Constable Eddy, Barnstaple. ESSEX. 13.— Brentwood ( County).— For larceny, 12th ult. — A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion fresh, thin face, hair and long moustache light brown, leans to left when standing ; dres3, short blue jacket, brown striped trousers, dark cloth cap, old lace boots. Supposed native of Norwich. He per- forms with a rope in public- houses, by getting some person to tie him up, and then extricates himself, also chews glass and p: its red- hot irons in his mouth. States he has been a soldier. He was traced to Ipswich on 14th ult. Information to Supt. Allen, Brentwood. 14.— Southend- on- Sea( C< i? m< i/).— For deserting his wife and family— GEORGE PARTOON, age 35, height 5 ft. 11 in,, complexion fresh, hair and mous- tache brown, eyes blue, scars on chin; dress, light tweed jacket and vest, light tight- fitting cord trousers, skull cap. A groom, but may be employed as a labourer on public works. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Simmonds, Southend- on- Sei. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 15.— Cardiff, Barry Dock ( County).— Forfailing to report— Licence Holder THOMAS PEARCE, alias THOMAS JACKSON and THOMAS CARTER, Office No. 3206- 96, age 41, height 5 ft. 5J in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown ( turning grey, thin on top), scar centre of back of head, outside left eyebrow, left . forearm, point of right elbow, between ring and 4th right fingers, numerous scars both sides of belly, scar left side of back, inside and outside right knee, top and inside left knee, front of left shin, front of right instep and left forearm, T. P., cross, N. W. T. and 4 dots back of left forearm, anchor and part of ship back of right forearm. Sentenced at Central Crimi- nal Court, 16th October, 1893, to 4 years penal servitude for burglary. An omnibus conductor; native of Norwich. Has been employed as a mess- room steward on board ship, and may seek similar employment, or as tramcar or omnibus conductor. Absconded 27th ult. Warrant issued. 17.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For obtaining 5th ult., 2 mackintosh overcoats by false pretences— A man, who gave the name of T. HAINS, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, mous- tache light; dress, black jacket and vest, bluo . striped trousers, long white shirt cuffs, light cap. Appear- ance of a draper's assistant. Stated he had been sent by another outfitter. Warrant issued. 18.— Cardiff ( Borough)— For stealing, 9th ult., 1 sacque- back dark grey overcoat, black bone buttons, usual pockets ; 1 pair light lace boots, wide welts, size 6— WILLIAM STEPHENS, age 21, height 5 ft. 5 in., small moustache light. A bottler or labourer. Sup- posed on tramp to London. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. GLOUCESTERSHIRE, 19.— Cheltenham ( County).— For embezzlement — JAMES SAMUEL LEAKE, age 31, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion rather sallow, thin features, hair dark brown, eyes brown, front teeth decayed, suffers from neuralgia in left cheek. Has been em- ployed as foreman at a joinery and wood- turning factory. Left about a month ago for Birmingham, taking with him a large box of carpenter's tools, a new brown mackintosh and a new blue melton cloth overcoat. Supposed native of Wolverhampton. Warrant issued. Gipsies or haw- kers, the former travels with a van and 2 horses, the latter with a van and an old grey horse. Sup- posed known in the Deer Forest, Gloucestershire. Warrants issued. Lewis, Bromyard. 21.— Ledbury ( County).— For larceny, 16th ult.— A MAN, age 26, height 5 ft. 5 in., rather stout build, complexion sallow, hair brown; dress, dark clothes and cap. HERTFORDSHIRE. 22.— Watford ( County).— For stealing, 15th ult., from an hotel, 1 gold watch, chased back, gold dial, numerals and hands; 1 long gold chain; 1 old gold oval brooch, set red cornelian stone; a canvas striped bag, containing £ 150— TWO MEN. 1st, age about 27, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, hair ( cut short) sandy; dress, blue melton overcoat velvet collar, silk facings, blaok trousers, dark tie, black felt hat. 2nd, age 27, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair and slight moustache light; dress, blue melton overcoat ( velvet collar), black cloth trousers, stand- up collar, dark tie, black felt hat. Supposed identical with EDWARD CONWAY, alias EDWARD INGRAM, EDWARD BLAN- CHAIID and FRANK FERGUSSON ( see Illus- trated Circular, No. 35, January, 1892, figure 11.) Known at Manchester, Farnham, and Newington, Surrey. Warrant issued. Information to Captain Wymer, Deputy Constable, Watford. KENT. 23.— Chatham ( County).— For embezzling £ 47, on 11th ult.— EDWIN MOURPHEW, age 35, height 5 ft. 6\ in., rather stout build, complexion, hair and moustache light, full face, scar on neck, very erect, throws out his knees when walking; dress, new heavy dark pilot overcoat, black jacket and vest, light tweed trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. A dockyard messenger. Has served in the Army Service Corps. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lacy, Chatham 24.— Margate ( Borough).— For failing to appear to his recognizances on 6th October last— ARTHUR NEVIL EYRE ( supposed false), age 21 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes blue. Was defendant in a recent action for false imprisonment and malicious prosecution. Falsely represents himself to be connected with Messrs. Eyre and Spottiswoode, Queen's Printers. Warrant issued. 25.— Margate ( Borough).— For obtaining 15s. by false pretences, 11th ult.— GEORGE CRAWFORD, alias F. A. GRAY, W. H. MILLS, H. HARRISON, REV. G. D. WYATT, REV. J. MAXWELL- STEWART, C. B. STEWART, J. D. PRIOR, R. BANNISTER, G. LOCKWOOD, etc., age 55 to 60, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., red face, rather large nose, hair, small side whiskers and small moustache grey, stoops slightly; wore a black hard felt hat, and car- ried a plain hook stick. He advertises and answers advertisements in the " Bazaar, Exchange and Mart." and similar publications, offering a terrier dog for sale, and is particular that the remittance should be by money order, on receipt of which he promises to forward the animal, but fails to do so. LANCASHIRE. 26.— Salford ( Borough).— For stealing, 28th ult., 1 lady's silver geneva watch, No. 98536, white dial, gold fingers and hinges, engine- turned cases, slightly worn; 1 lady's silver geneva watch, No. 54954, white dial, steel fingers, cases engraved with flowers, shield in centre, inner case dented near winding bole; 1 lady's black alpaca umbrella, with brown wood: handle— A woman who gave the name of ANNIE WILLIAMS, ago about 20, height 5 ft. 1 in., com- pexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, cut mark on upper lip; dress, black jacket, black serge dress, black hat trimmed red flowers. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Salford. 27.— Southport ( Borough).— For stealing, 21st ult., 2 gentlemen's gold watches, 1st, with " Pre- sented to Jas. Black by Jas. Herz" inscribed inside, gold chain attached, 2nd, an old one, No. 40780, with chain, small locket, toothpick, and 2 plain gold sleeve links attached ; 1 gold scarf- ring, made from a nugget—- A man, giving name of R. SPENCER, age 45, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, long face, moustache ( cut short) sandy, 1 eye much dis- coloured, large nose, deep wrinkle on forehead, stoops ; dress, fawn- coloured covert coat, dark coat and vest, grey trousers. Information to Chief Constable Elliott, Southport. LEICESTERSHIRE. 28.— Leicester ( Borough).— For obtaining by false pretences, 12th ult., 3 gold alberts ( 1 9- carat open- curb, " 303, W. D. V." scratched on swivel, weight 1 oz. 6 dwts. 18 grs.; 1 9- carat close straight- curb, " 296, G. K. D. V." on swivel, weight 1 oz. 2 dwt. 23 grs.; and 1 recovered)— HENRYWELDON, aftas GARNER and WATSON, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion hair and moustache dark, front teeth much decayed; dress, frock coat or jacket suit, Monte Carlo hat. Represented himself as an agent for a woolstapler at Bradford. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leicester. LINCOLNSHIRE. 29.— Horncastle ( County).— For obtaining, 7th ult., food, lodgings and money by false pretences— A man, who gave the name of HAWTON, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., hair and moustache dark; dress, black clothes, soft black hat with dent in crown. Associated with racing men. Had in his possession betting tickets with " Walter Simmonds, Claremont Club, Islington," thereon. He was oonvicted of larceny at Milverton on 13th March, 1878, as JOHN THOMAS HAWTIN ; of robbery with violence at Central Criminal Court, 29th May, 1889, as JOHN MORLEY; of riding without ticket at Clerkenwell, 30th May, 1890, as JOHN DAY ; and of larceny at Hansworth, 20th February, 1891 ; Salford Sessions, 11th May, 1893, and at North- ampton, 14th April, 1894, in name of JOHN THOMAS HAWTIN. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Costar, Horncastle. 30.— Grantham ( Borough).— For stealing, 19th ult., a safety bicycle, diamond] frame, D section back stays, " Woodley" tyres, tangent spokes, " Brook's " saddle, rubber pedals, cork handles, " New Bucking- ham & Adams Cycle Co." on head and mudguard, brake, guards, bell, lamp and inflator— A man giving the name of JONES, height about 5 ft. 8 in., slight TUESDAY, JANUARY 12, 1897. MERIONETHSHIRE. 31.— Bala ( County).— For stealing, between 13th and 16th ult., 1 pair of light lace boots ( much worn) ; 1 red flannel shirt; 2 light- coloured flannelette shirts ; and an old dark overcoat— A MAN, age about 60, Iheight 5 It. 8 or 9 in., beard of 2 or 3 weeks' growth; dress, stolen overcoat and boots, dark cord trousers, soft felt hat; walks with a stick. May have cut the stolen boots down as shoes. A tramp, sleeps in outbuildings. Information to Inspector Roberts, Bala. MIDLOTHIAN. 32.— Edinburgh ( City).— For failing to report— Licence Holder JAMES FERGUSON, oZiasMICHAEL CAIRNS and JOHN FERGUSON, Register No. 675- 96, age 38, height 5 ft. 3J- in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown ( turning grey), eyes hazel, scar front of left ear, on scalp, 3 above right ear, above right eyebrow, outer angles both eyebrows, 2 point of chin, inside left forearm, front left thigh, and circular scar back of right thigh, R. G. front of right forearm near bend of elbow, anchor between left thumb and fore- finger, slightly pock- marked. Sentenced at Glasgow High Court, 9th May, 1894, to 3 years penal servitude for housebreaking. Licenced 12th September, 1896. 696.
