All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of " Is. 6 « i. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the. signature of an officer of not less rankthan Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of al> persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and cure alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or sto'en property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanicd by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond < L- Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. An inventor has patented a composition for taking casts of footprints in any soft ground, and Government has acquired the right to use this invention in any part of the United Kingdom. It is anticipated that it will prove of value occasionally in criminal cases, especially in rural districts, and any Police Force that wishes to have particulars of it is invited to apply to the Home Office confidentially for that purpose. ( Convict Supervision Department.) — For failing to report— Lioence Holder HENRY GARTELL, alias HENRY GIRDLE, HENRY DAW- SON and JOHN FOLEY, Office No. 48602 ( see Gazette 3rd January, 1896), age 34, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, scar left side of forehead, between eyebrows, left side of nose, 4 cut scars right side of head, 2 on left shoulder- blade, and 1 on left knee, ring on 4th right finger, mole between shoulders. Sentenced at Newington Sessions, 10th February, 1890, to 7 years penal servitude for stealing £ 2. Licenced 30th August, 1895. K Q 504. 2.— A Division.— For embezzlement— CHARLES HAMMOND CROXFORD, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair brown; dress, dark overcoat and suit, low black hat, usually wears a gold ring with " C. H. C." engraved thereon, and large paste diamond stud. A native of Chelsea. Late a col- lector in the employ of the Gas Light and Coke Com- pany. Warrant issued. 3.— G Division.— For feloniously wounding by stabbing, 14th inst,— VINCENT ANNIELLO, an Italian, age 26, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion dark, hair ( curly) and slight moustache black, eyes dark; dress, black coat, grey trousers, white neckerchief, side- spring boots, black felt hat, or black fancy pat- tern cloth jacket suit and brown overcoat. Will pro- bably be found at Italian resorts in the provinces. 4.— K Division.— For stealing from furnished lodgings, 1 gentleman's silver geneva open- face watdh, " H. D. Cannon" engraved on inside case; 1 silver curb pattern chain; and other articles— F. GOOD- RUM, age 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., qomplexion pale, hair and small moustache dark, speaks through his nose; dress, dark jacket and vest, light- grousers, black hard felt hat. MRS. GOODRUM, age 21, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion and hair ( frizzed on forehead) dark, slight cast in one eye; dress, short black cape, black jacket, green dress, green corded, velvet hat trimmed black ribbon and red flowers, dark brown squirrel collarette. Carries a black fur muff. Supposed native of East Dereham, Norfolk. Warrant issued. 5.— R Division.— For obtaining £ 20 by false pretences— ALBERT MARMADURE ANDERSON alias DR. ANDERSON and ALBERT MARMA- DUKE, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, long face and nose, haif1 ( curly at ends) and moustache light brown, eyes small ( one has a peculiar look), wears gold- rimmed eye- glasses; of gentlemanly appearance and address; usually wears frock- coat, tall hat. Supposed an American. Mav be accom- panied by A WOMAN, tall, age 38, complexion dark, hair black, husky voice. He Advertised in the " Eng- lish Mechanic" as " The Exhibition Company, of 14, Westmoreland Terrace, Newchstle- on- Tyne," offering to supply Cinematographs for £ 20. Absconded 30th September last. Is said to have been connected with exhibitions at Colne in February and Accrington in April last. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. AYRSHIRE. 6.— Ayr ( County).— Portrait and description of ARTHUR STURROCK, a solicitor, and agent of the British Linen Company's Bank, Kilmarnock, whose apprehension is sought for embezzling £ 4,150, age 40, height about 6 ft. 1 in., slight build, complexion fresh, rather long face, hair and moustache light, high cheek- bones, rather prominent nose, front teeth slightly project, walks erect, of military appearance, speaks rather affectedly ; dress ( when last seen), brown tweed jacket suit, black hard felt hat; carried a small black hand- bag ; a native of Kilmarnock. Absconded 23rd October last. Inquiries requested at hotels, shipping offices, etc. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Ayrshire, Ayr. BRECONSHIRE. 7.— Brecon ( County).— For failing to appear to a witness summons— TOM BROWN, alias BRUM, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, complexion fresih, heavy brown moustache, eyes hazel or brown; dress, cloth jacket, moleskin trousers, cloth cap, heavy boots. JOHN WILSON, alias PUNCH, age 28, height 5 ft, 3 or 4 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, clean- shaved, eyes grey ; dress, cloth jacket and vest, slate- colour cord trousers, strong boots. Navvies. May be found on public works. Warrant issued. Information to Sergt. Lloyd, Cefncoed, near Mer- thvr Tydfil. « 8\. T H E POLICE GAZETTE. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1896. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 8.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For obtaining goods by false pretences— WILLIAM SYERS, age about 42, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair ( wore long at back) and heavy moustache brown, eyes grey, small scar bridge of nose and over left eye, very plausible manner; dress ( when last seen), dark grey suit, dark tie, high silk hat, lace boots, brown spats. Carried an umbrella. Associates with religious bodies, gener- ally Wesleyan. He takes apartments, representing himself as managing director of the Great Britain Coal Company, Highbury, London, and The English and Scottish Estate Association, Highbury, and is about to establish an agency in the neighbourhood; advertises for clerks and lady pupils to learn type- writing and shorthand, from whom he obtains a pre- mium of five guineas. He then takes a house and obtains furniture and provisions by means of the same representations. He was sentenced at Bed- fordshire Quarter Sessions on 16th October, 1895, to 12 months imprisonment for a similar fraud at Luton, and to 2 months for false pretences at Brighton, on 7th January, 1895. Warrant issued. 9.— Cam bridge ( Borough).— Forobtaining money by false pretences— EMMETT HUSSEY, age about 26, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion pale, thin face, hair and moustache light brown; of gentlemanly appearance, and is well- educated ; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, dark cloth trousers, white silk tie, black hard felt hat, brown boots. He took lodgings on 23rd ult., and left on 3rd inst., stating that he was going to London to see his employers. During his stay at Cambridge, he has been advertising in the " Bazaar, Exchange, and Mart" and other papers, offering for sale poultry, wearing apparel, guns, jewellery, saddlery, etc., and thus obtained several sums of money, promising to send the articles on approval. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Holland, Cam- bridge. CARMARTHENSHIRE. 10.— Llanelly ( County).— For obtaining, 17th ult., food, lodgings and money by false pretences— REES THOMAS ( supposed false), age 31 to 34, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion, hair and mous- tache dark, abscess scar below left jaw, of military appearance; dress, black serge coat and vest, light cloth trousers, small light cloth cap, Oxford shoes. Stated he was a native of Briton Ferry, Glamorgan- shire. He states he has obtained employment at local works, takes lodgings, orders groceries, etc., to be sent there, and obtains money under the pretence of fetching his luggage. Warrant issued. CHESHIRE. 11.— Hyde ( County).— For housebreaking, 11th ult.— Licence Holder THOMAS ADAMS, Office No. 2800- 96, age 42, height 5 ft. 4£ in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, scar over right eyebrow, 2 on left cheek, 1 right of forehead, 1 on right thumb, right wrist, and on left forearm, mole *> n left ribs, outside left forearm, and red mole under left shoulder- blade. Sentenced at Chester Assizes, 16th June, 1894, to 3 years penal servitude for bur- glary. Licenced 14th September, 1896. U 253. Information to Capt. Lingard, Superintendent, Hyde, Cheshire. 12.— Oakmere ( County).— For stealing, 25th ult., at Tarporley, 1 light drab dust coat, extra button right side of collar; 1 pair yellow leather gloves, lined yellow wool; 1 dark grey tweed jacket; 1 ditto vest with sleeves; 1 pair light grey tweed trousers ; 1 pair white bioad brace i, saddler's make, " 2/ 9" in ink on leather at back; 1 black cardigan jacket, patched at elbow; 1 black felt hat, size 6|; 1 pair horse clippers, " Clarke" thereon; 1 ditto, " W. Bown, Newmarket pattern " thereon ; 1 razor, " Wade and Butcher, Sheffield," thereon— JIM GLENNY, a tramping groom, age about 50, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey and bald on top) dark brown, cast in eyes, weak back, and wears belt or stays, shuffling gait, feet recently scalded, in consequence of which his boots are cut in front; dressed in the stolen clothing. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Johnson, Oakmere, near Northwich. 13.— Stockport ( Borough).— Portrait and de- scription of CHARLES EDWARD COOKSON, whose apprehension is sought for obtaining by false pretences, 7th inst., 1 gentleman's gold centre seconds stop watch, No. 64614, large size, plain case, " J. Winter, 25, Little Underbank, Stockport," on move- ment; 1 lady's 18- carat gold lever watch, No. 90346, engraved case, extra jewelled, " Thomas Russell and Son, Liverpool," on movement, " Thomas Russell and Son, made for J. Winter, Stockport," on dial; and a large 18- carat single- stone diamond ring, pure white flawless stone, weight about carats, carved setting; age about 25, height 5 ft. 5 in., inclined to be stout, complexion fresh, hair light brown, slight light moustache, of smart appearance ; may endeavour to leave the country. A marine store dealer. Is accompanied by his wife, age about 25, height 5 ft. 1 in., slight build, complexion fresh. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Jones, Stockport. CUMBERLAND. £ 1 REWARD. 14.— Penrith ( County).— For deserting his three children, leaving them chargeable to the Penrith Union— JAMES HEWER, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., hair and moustache dark, round features. A quarryman; nativo of Cumberland. Is probably working in a quarry in the North of England or in Scotland. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Penrith Union for the apprehension of Hewer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bell, Penrith. DEVONSHIRE. 15.— Devonport ( Borough).— For stealing 1 silver albert, snake pattern, centre forms 2 heads, coins attached; 6 pairs blankets; 7 pairs sheets; 7 coun- terpanes ( 1 white, the others patchwork); 12 bolster and pillow- slips ; 1 brown tweed coat and vest; 1 tin trunk; and other articles— CHARLES ARTHUR VINE, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, full face, hair ( curly) black, good teeth, red mark on forehead; dress, black reefer jacket, stripe trousers, black net neckerchief, black hard hat. A navvy; native of Sandbach, Cheshire. SARAH WILKIN, alias CONSTABLE, age 35, medium height, com plexion dark, hair black, 5 upper false teeth; dress, black serge dress, black- figured mantle, long black fur boa, fawn- coloured straw hat, trimmed fawn satin and white feather, carries a white- handle umbrella and a coloured shawl. A native of Northwold, Norfolk. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Matters, Devon- port. ESSEX. J8.— Brentwood( CWn<?/).— For larceny, 12th inst. — A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion fresh, thin face, hair and long moustache light brown, leans to left when standing; dress, short blue jacket, brown striped trousers, dark cloth cap, old lace boots. Supposed native of Norwich. He per- forms with a rope in public- houses, by getting some person to tie him up, and then extricates himself, also chews glass and puts red- hot irons in his mouth. States he has been a soldier. Ho was traced to Ipswich on 14th inst. Information to Supt. Allen, Brentwood. 19.— Grays ( County).— For conspiracy and ob- taining £ 14 10s. 0d., between 9th September and 1st ult.— FREDERICK TYLER, age 34, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, hair and eyes ( full) dark brown, slight dark moustache. Has been employed as storekeeper on the Industrial School- ship " Shaftes- bury." Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Grays. 20.— Southend- on- Sea( CWify).— For stealing, 2nd inst., a silver hunter lever watch, No. 40185, gold hands, maker's name " T. J. Mercer " on face— WILLIAM CHALMERS, age 38, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) and heavy moustache dark, eyes brown, walks badly, right ankle bent inwards; dress, dark jacket and vest, cord trousers, grey cap, light boots. A labourer. Has been in the Navy. Supposed a native of Glasgow. Warrant issued. 21.— Southend- on- Sea( CoM^ y).— For deserting his wife and family— GEORGE PARTOON, age 35, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair and mous- tache brown, eyes blue, scars on chin ; dress, light tweed jacket and vest, light tight- fitting cord trousers, skull cap. A groom, but may be employed as a labourer on public works. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Rimmonds, Southend- on- Sea. DURHAM. 16.— North Shields ( Borough).— For failing to report— Licence Holder THOMAS MORRIS, alias CHARLES WHITE, ARTHUR GREEN, THOMAS WARD, THOMAS BRYANT and CHARLES MOR- RIS, Office No. 3315- 96, age 26, height 4 ft. 11J in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes brown, scars right side of head, right top of forehead, centre of lower part of back, back of 2nd joint left thumb, top of left forefinger, back of right forearm, 2nd joint of risrht thumb, 3rd joint right forefinger, back of right thigh, on right leg, outside left ankle, and 2 inside right ankle, cast in right eye, 3 vaccination marks on left arm. A labourer. He arrived in the ss. " Iiellsall" on November 11th. He was last seen on the 25th November, when hq stated that ho was going to try and get a collier and return to London, which he is supposed to have done. He further stated his inten- tion not to report again. Sentenced at South London Sessions, 10th July, 1894, to 3 years penal servitude and 2 years police supervision, for stealing serge. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 22.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For embezzlement— HERBERT ADAMS, age 19, height 5 ft. 3 in., slight build, complexion sallow, long thin face, hair dark ; dress, long grey overcoat, light cloth jacket, dark tweed trousers, flat blue cloth cap with shiny peak. An omnibus conductor; native of Norwich. Has been employed as a mess- room steward on board ship, and may seek similar employment, or as tramcar or omnibus conductor. Absconded 27th ult. Warrant issued. 23.— Cardiff" ( Borough).— Forobtaining 5th inst., 2 mackintosh overcoats by false pretences— A man, who gave the name of T. HAINS, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, mous- tache light; dress, black jacket and vest, blue striped trousers, long white shirt cuffs, light cap. Appear- ance of a draper's assistant. Stated he had been sent by another outfitter. Warrant issued. 24.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing, 9th inst., 1 sacque- back dark grey overcoat, black bone buttons, usual pockets ; 1 pair light lace boots, wide welts, size 6— WILLIAM STEPHENS, age 21, height 5 ft. 5 in., small moustache light. A bottler or labourer. Sup- posed on tramp to London. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. HAMPSHIRE. 25.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For burglary, 18th ult. — WILLIAM HENRY MU11DEN, alias FRANK CLEMENTS, age 21, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion pale, thin features, hair and eyes brown, clean- shaved, very irregular teeth, very prominent larynx, walks erect, sings, and plays the piano ; dress, black morning coat, blue serge vest and trousers, black bow, nearly new shoes. He takes apartments, com- mits a larceny, and breaks out before the occupants are up. Friends reside at Nottingham. Supposed previously convicted and to be wanted elsewhere. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 26.— Southampton ( Borough).— For stealing a bicycle— DR. GOATER McDONALD, alias H. C. GOATER and COATER, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., hair and moustache dark, drops left side of lower lip when talking, speaks with American accent; dress, double- breasted frock- coat, dark grey trousers, silk hat. Had in his pos- session a Norfolk suit ( knickerbockers, with box- cloth knees). Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southampton. HERTFORDSHIRE. 27.— Watford ( County).— For stealing, 15th inst., from an hotel, 1 gold watch, chased back, gold dial, numerals and hands; 1 long gold chain; 1 old gold THURSDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1896. T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 3 oval brooch, set red cornelian stone*, a canvas striped bag, containing £ 150— TWO MEN. 1st, age about 27, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, hair ( cut short) sandy; dress, blue melton overcoat velvet collar, silk facings, black trousers, dark tie, black felt hat. 2nd, age about 27, height 5 ft. 9 in., com- plexion fair, hair and slight moustache light; dress, blue melton overcoat ( velvet collar), black cloth trou- sers, stand- up collar, dark tie, black felt hat. Information to Captain Wymer, Deputy Constable, Watford. KENT. 28.— Cranbrook ( County).— Forstealinga bicycle ( recovered)— HENRY HINKLEY, alias HARRY JTRANKLIN, age 29, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair and mou- tache dark brown, eyes blue, slightly round- shouldered; is very talka- tive; dress, blue serge suit, green- and- black bow- tie, soft black felt hat, lace boots. Native of Cranbrook. Is likely to be found at a coffee tavern. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Fowle, Cranbrook. 29.— Sandgate ( County).— For deserting his wife and 5 children, leaving them chargeable to the Romney Marsh Union— CHARLES PAIN, age 37, height 5 ft. 10| in., complexion, hair and moustache dark, eyes hazel, bracelet right wrist, blister mark one leg, . bullet mark above right knee, cut on head, mole under one arm, ears stand out; dress, brown overcoat, jacket and vest, old fustian trousers, white neck wrap. Native of Dymchurch. Warrant issued. Information to Superintendent Waghorn, Sandgate. 30.— Margate ( Borough).— For embezzlement— GEORGE PURVIS BECK, alias BAKER, a journey- man baker, age about 23, height about 6 ft., slight build, complexion fresh, hair, very slight moustache and eyes light, 4 upper front teeth deficient, flat- footed ; dress, dark blue reefer jacket and vest, grey trousers, grey covert coat and cap. Supposed a native of Canterbury; associates with betting- men. Absconded 21st ult. Warrant issued. 31.— Margate ( Borough).— For obtaining 15s. by false pretences, 11th ult.— GEORGE CRAWFORD, alias F. A. GRAY, W. H. MILLS, H. HARRISON, REV. G. D. WYATT, REV. J. MAXWELL- STEWART, C. B. STEWART, J. D. PRIOR, R. BANNISTER, G. LOCKWOOD, etc., age 55 to 60, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., red face, rather large nose, hair, small side whiskers and small moustache grey, stoops slightly; wore a black hard felt hat, and car- ried a plain hook stick. He advertises and answers advertisements in the " Bazaar, Exchange and Mart" and similar publications, offering a terrier dog for sale, and is particular that the remittance should be by money order, on receipt of which he promises to forward the animal, but fails to do so. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Farndale, Margate.
