All announcements for insertion in the POLICE G AZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SQOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension it sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particn'ars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted inone issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name anl address of some person responsible for the payment must be gioen, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. SPECIAL NOTICE. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the noticc of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was desciibed in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which liad to be refunded o ' by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is unwilling to incur any expense with a view to obtain Lis surrender, a notification be made in the communication sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be Irrosted beyond the United Kingdom. * ? The necessity for the adoption of such a course will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZETTE is circulated in ( lie Colonies. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— C. O. ( Convict Supervision Depart- ment)— For stealing, at Richmond, 31st ult.— a bay mare, & c. ( recovered). Licence- holder EDWARD WYNDHAM MOOllE, alias GEORGE WILLIAM ROSS, JOSEPH EDWARD MALLISON, EDWARD WILLIAM GASCOYNE MOORE, and GEORGE WYNDHAM MOORE, Office No. 2194- 6, age 31, height 5 ft. 11 £ in., com- plexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scar over right eye, front of left forearm, back of left thumb, each side of right lower arm, outside left hip, and inside left thigh, brown mole left side of chest, and left side of back, 2 boil marks on right buttock, 1 vaccination mark right arm, slightly pockmarked. Native of Ware, Hertfordshire; has been a clerk and a soldier. Sentenced at Dorchester Assizes 8th July, 1889 to 5 years penal servitude for forgery, for pay- ment of money. Liberated on 3 rd licence 8th July, 18s6. P. 280. Last heard of at Cosham and Portsmouth. Warrant issued. 2.— G. Division.— For embezzling £ 11 0s. 0d., 4th inst.— GEORGE T. COLLINS, age 22, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair and mous- tache dark brown, eyes dark, slightly bow- legged; dress, dark blue serge suit, black hard felt hat. A native of Bethnal Green. May be found at a seaside town or at recruiting stations. Wan- ant issued. 3.— G. Division.— For fraudulent bankruptcy— OLIVER BURROWS, age about 50, height 5 ft. 6 in., lately carried on business as a boot manufacturer at 60, Banner Street, St. Lukes, in the name of Wilkins and Co. Warrant issued. 4.— P. Division.— For carnally knowing a girl under the age of 16— WALTER RICHARD TATE, or TEIGHT, age 25, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes dark brown, 2 large birthmarks on loins, " R. Tate" on nyjscle of left arm, " Y " and anchor left arm, scar, 2 dots and stroke, right arm; dress, black morning coat and vest, dark mixture tweed trousers, black hard felt hat. A native of Peckham. Warrant issued. 5.— T. Division.— For attemptingtodisposeof avail which he had on hire— ALGERNON THORNTON, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair and slight moustache dark ; dress, grey mixture coat and vest, dark trousers, straw hat, lace boots. CITY OF LONDON. 6.— For fraud— MARY RUSSELL MURRAY, alias RUSSELL, SOMERVILLE, DOUGLAS, etc., a<* e about 50, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., stout build, complexion, hair and eyes very dark ( turning grey), full face, of good appearance and address, dressed in black, generally stays at first- class hotels, and leaves without paying the bill. BERKSHIRE. 7.— Newbury ( County).— On a warrant for steal- ing ( as bailee) a quantity of wearing apparel ( new).— Licence- Holder PHILLIP CATTERMOLE, alias HORATIO JAMES, HENRY SEWARD, HENRY BARNETT, HENRY JONES, and H. POPPLE WELL, Office No. 48577, age 67, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair grey ( thin on top, bald), eyes blue, clean shaven, full fair moustache ( turning grey), hair may be dyed black or brown, mole right temple and on right breast, boil scar back of neck, hairy chest, scar outside right upper arm, small scars on forehead, apparently suffering from asthma, fond of drink; dressed, black frock coat, high silk hat, wearing a gold watch No. 361408; accompanied by ( supposed) son, age about 17, simple- looking, fair. Stated he was a retired sea captain. Left Newbury 18th July, driving a lured black horse and dog- cart, which he left at the Livery Stables opposite Hounslow Railway Station. Supposed same as described in GAZETTE, 19th June, 1896, Case 99. Sentenced at Middlesex Sessions, 20th February, 18S8, to 10 years penal servitude for larceny. Licenced 23rd August, 1S95. D. J. Robotham, Newbury. 8.— Maidenhead ( Borough).— On a commitment warrant, for breach of the Highway Act— HARRY HOLTON, age 24, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes grey; dress, grey check cloth coat, horn buttons in front, grey vest, cord trousers, silk scarf, cap, military boots. A costermonger. Is known at Overton, Bucks. 9.— Maidenhead ( Borough).— For stealing, 9th ult., 60 pictures, 27 photographic views, and 6 clocks— JACOB G. SCHUMAN, a Russian Jew, age about 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache dark sandy, eyes blue ( sunken); dress, dark shabby clothes, high hat ( sometimes wears a cap). A traveller. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. 10.— Reading ( Borough).— Forstealing, 6tli inst., 1 meerschaum cigar- holder, cluster of 3 nuts, tube in centre, amber mouthpiece, broken, and 10s.— A MAN, age 27 to 29, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion sallow ( sun- burnt), hair and slight moustache dark brown ; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, grey trousers, bow tie, brown canvas shoes, of good address. Carried a light cane walking- stick, smoked a meerschaum pipe ( bowl in lady's hand). He took apartments, stating he had a brother employed at Messrs. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. 11.— Windsor ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 7 by a fictitious cheque, on 6th inst.— E. P. ROSE ( sup- posed false), age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., broad build, hair and moustache dark; dress, dark suit, black billycock hat. He went to an hotel, represent- ing himself as guide to a large party, ordered lunch, etc., and, on being asked for a deposit, tendered a cheque for £ 12, receiving £ 7 as the balance. 12.— WindSOr ( Borough). — For stealing, 11 th inst. — a lady's low- frame bicycle, '' Beeston " tyres, front tyre worn by rubbing against fork, " C. King and Co., St. Leonard's Road, Windsor," on bottom rail, seat stem and rear mudguard, No. 310 on handle- bar crown, double alarm bell— A MAN, height about 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fair, sandy moustache; dress, blue serge suit, soft felt hat. He presented a card, with " Alfred Simms, Francess Road," thereon, to which address he ordered two more bicycles to be sent. Information to Chief Constable Armour, Windsor. CHESHIRE. 13.— Middlewich ( County).— For shopbreaking, 6th inst., and stealing about 2 lbs. roll tobacco, chiefly thin twist, and about 10s. in bronze— TWO MEN, ages 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion dark, one man had slight dark moustache, both dressed in dark grey suits; one wore blue and white spotted neck- kerchief. 14.— Middlewich ( County).— For stealing£ 14, at Northwich— MARY LARKIN, age about 21, height 5 ft. 2 in., stout build, complexion dark, hair dark brown ; dress, dark green dress, black and white sailor hat. Was employed as domestic servant, absconded 3rd inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Large, Middlewich. DENBIGHSHIRE. 15.— Wrexham ( County).— For assault on his wife, 30th ult.— JOHN BROWN, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 7 in., hair and whiskers ( shaggy) turning grey, cast in eyes, peculiar- looking, and partially blind; dress, blue serge suit, soft black hat, lace boots. A hardware and basket dealer. May be found at commercial hotels. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Jones, Wrexham. HERTFORDSHIRE. 23.— Watford ( County).— For larceny ( bailee)— HARRY PALMER, age about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair ( bald on top) and moustache black, eyes dark brown, one upper front tooth stopped with gold, speaks with West Country accent; dress, brown morning coat suit. Warrant issued. Information to Captain Wymer, Deputy- Chief Con- stable, Watford. brown leather leggings, blue shirt, with white dia- mond spots, crimson and green tie ( sailor knot), brown lace boots, believed to have the name of " Foal" inside. Is accompanied by RICHARD W. WISE, age 19, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, KENT. 24.— Sandgate ( County).— For non- appearance to a summons for using threats— WILLIAM WOOD age 38, height 5 ft. 5 J in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, supposed scar on nose; dress, dark grey suit, Oxford mixture shirt, white collar, black necktie, dark brown socks, light grey cap, lace boots, is addicted to drink. A plumber, painter and house decorator. Native of Sandgate. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Waghorn, Sandgate. 25.— Canterbury ( City).— For failing to report- Supervisee FRANCIS DAWSON, alias THOMAS ROGER WOOD, JOHN WILSON, WILLIAM CLYDE, SAMUEL SHAW, ANDREW KENNION SAMUEL JACKSON, FREDERICK WALLACE' FRANCIS ROSS, THOMAS ROGER VIVIAN HENRY ATKINS, etc., Office No. 48010 ( see Ga- zette, 28th February, 1896, case 66), age 45, height 5 ft. § in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scar near point cf nose on chin, blue scar out- side left forearm, mole left cheek, brown birth- mark right side of back, second right finger slightly crooked ( crushed near point), and a large bunion on left big toe joint. A cigar maker. Sentenced at Shrewsbury Borough Sessions, 17th October, 1894, to 6 months hard labour, and 7 years police super- vision, for larcanv ( person). 599. DERBYSHIRE. 16.— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For stealing, 10th inst.— an " Irewell" safety bicycle, front wheel '' Stubbs ' " pneumatic tyre, back wheel, " Welch- Dun- lop," spoke in back wheel broken, and bent round next one, spoon brake, saddle worn near rivets— A MAN, age 19 or 20, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh ; dress, light brown suit, brown cap. Stated he was going to Eckington. Information to Head Constable Emery, Chesteifiild. 17.— Derby ( Borongli).— For stealing 5th inst.— 1 lady's 18- carat gold keyless lever watch, No. 18684, no dome, engraved cases ; 1 lady's 18- carat gold lever watch, gold dial, No. 13808, engraved cases; 1 lady's gold hunter watch, Swiss make, gold dial, engraved cases, No. 104842, in 3 cases, 2 blue plush, and 1 red maroon, bearing name " James Moore, jeweller, 18 Corn Market, Derby " ; 1 lady's 15- carat gold albert, 2 strands joined by engraved mount in centre— A man, who gave the name of C. MAY, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, clean shaved, twitches his mouth when talk- ing ; dressed in dark suit, brown Alpine hat, respect- able appearance. He took apartments, and then called at a jeweller's shop, and asked that the watches, etc., might be sent to his address, and, on the pretence of shewing them to his wife, obtained possession of the articles, and decamped. Information to Lt.- Col. Delacombe, Chief Constable, Town Hall, Derby. complexion sallow ; dress, blue and grey woollen coat, striped trousers, straw hat. Supposed will endeavour to leave the country for South America. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Sawerly, Ply- mouth. DEVONSHIRE. 18.— Plymouth ( Borough).— Portrait and descrip- tion of SIDNEY HERBERT NANCARROW, whose apprehension is sought for stealing, 1st inst., £ 400 in Bank of England notes, and a large sum of gold from a bank, ago 2"), height 6 ft., very slight build, complexion fresh, hair ( smooth) dark brown, prominent ears and lips, baggy cheeks, stoops slightly, carries his head forward, has a shambling walk ; dress ( when last seen), dark grey cloth overcoat, blue serge suit ( lounge coat), cloth cap or straw hit, sometimes wears grey- brown check knickers and HAMPSHIRE. 19.— Southampton ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 25 by fraud— DONALD ERASER ( supposed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., sunburnt, heavy brown moustache; dress, blue cloth morning suit, soft felt hat, brown shoes, red tie, wore a thick double gold chain, with pyramid shape pendant, of gentle- manly appearance. A telegram was received by a local firm of solicitors, apparently from their London agents, advising them that the above, a nephew of a client, had arrived from abroad, and would call, and requested that £ 20 or £ 25 might be advanocd. The sum paid included four £ 5 Bank of England notes from the Nos. 7380, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 88, 89. Warrant issued. 20.— Southampton ( Borough).— For stealing a cash- box and £ 96— WALTER HENRY BATTEN, age 25, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, 5 dots tattooed right arm, one on back of left arm, walks erect; dress, black diagonal morning coat, brown tweed trousers, bound with braid at bottoms. Has served in the Royal Marine Artillery. Warrant issued. 21.— Southampton(/? oro? t0/(,).— For infringement of the Habitual Drunkards' Act— DAVID LECIvIE, age 33, height 6 ft. 2 in., hair ( cut close), beard, whiskers and moustache 1' ght, prominent hook nose, walks erect, of very smxrt appearance; dress, black mourning coat, grey trousers, silk hat. Warrant issued. 22.— Southampton ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 10 by a worthless cheque on the Southsea Branch of the National Provincial Bank— H. F. BICKEL, alias A. F. BICKEL, and G. P. SMITH, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 in. ( sunburnt), long brown moustache; dress, black jacket, dark trousers, white straw hat, with black band. He calls at hotels, and engages rooms for his wife and family, and after the Banks are closed he hands the hotel manager a cheque to take charge of for him, upon which he obtains an advance of £ 10. LANCASHIRE. 26.— Bury ( County).— For failing to report- Supervisee JOHN WILLIAMS, alias JOHN McKENNA and JOHN MACIvENNA, Office No. 47479, age 29, height 5 ft. 5J in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes grey, nose inclines to left, 2 moles on chin, pockmarked on right cheek, and left of mouth; lost 4th finger from 2nd joint, and ends of 1st and 2nd fingers, on right hand; scar left shoulder, back of head, right eye, and outer side of upper left arm to elbow ( about 5 in., long). Sen- tenced at Kendal Sessions, 9th January, 1891, to 5 years penal servitude, and 2 years police supervision, for shopbreaking. Licensed 1st January, 1895. R. 12. Information to Superintendent Noblett, Bury. £ 2 REWARD. 27.— Chorley ( County).— Portrait and descrip- tion of JAMES OLLERTON, whose apprehension is sought for non- payment of maintenance arrears, age 53, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel. Was last seen at Bol- ton a few weeks ago. Calls on publicans to fit and repair beer engines. Native of Chorley. . Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley, by whom, the above reward will be paid for the apprehension of Ollerton. 28.— Garstang ( County).— For stealing £ 18— A MAN, age 55, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark ( turning grey), eyes hazel, 2 moles right cheek, 1 left side of mouth; dres3, black coat and vest, grey trousers, hard felt hat, heavy lace boots. He takes lodgings at public or farm houses, repre- senting himself to be a detective in search of a stolen horse, or horse- dealer. Information to Supt. Bourke, Garstang. 29.- Kirkham ( County).—. For stealing, 6th inst., at Frickleton— 1 silver English lever watch, No. 6125, maker, " Thomas Yates " on white dial, gold hands, desciibed as a " Dead Beat"; 1 metal chain, with FIUDAY, AUGUST 14, 1896. THE POTJPF, C:\ 7AYYTV. 3 pendant, swivel with stone, blood one side, green the other, attached— A MAN, age 55, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark ( turning grey), eyes hazel, 2 moles on right cheek, 1 left side of mouth; dress, black coat and vest, grey trousers, with red stripes, hard felt hat, heavy lace boots. Supposed to be at present wearing greysuit, and American hat. He took lodgings, representing himself to be a detective in search of a stolen horse, and decamped in the morning. 30.— Kirkham ( County).— For failing to report- Supervisee THOMAS KNOWLES, alias THOMAS VAREY, Office No. 1481/ 96 and 46194, age 21, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, thick jaw bone3, gland* of neck enlarged, deep cut scar left of forehead, and back of lef. hand, scar under chin, on right shin bone, and 2 on left ditto, mole under left shoulder blade (.) outside right forearm; native of Catheroc. Sentenced at Lin- caster Sessions, 26th June, 1893, to 9 months hard labour, and 3 years police supervision, for horse steal- ing, and at Lancaster As- izss, 29th October, 1895, to € months hard labour, for stealing a horse. Information to Superintendent Ormerod, County Police Office, Kirkham. 31.— Blackpool ( Borough).— For failing to report — Supervisee JOHN SPENCER, alias BERNARD JESSOP and JOHN WILLIAMS, Office No. 1036- 6, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown; scar left eyebrow, faint blue mark outside both forearms ; ruptured left side. Sentenced at Preston Sessions, 2nd January, 1895, to 15 months hard labour, and 3 years police supervision, for steal- ing an overcoat. 525. Information to Chief Constable, Blackpool. 32. — Bootle ( Borough).— For failing to report— Licence Holder THOMAS EGERTON, Office No. 48908, age 34, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, soar top and 3 centre back of head, 1 centre of forehead, and on left thumb; pro- portionate build, oval face; a labourer, and native of Liverpool. Sentenced at Liverpool Ass'. zes, 8th November, 1880, to 20 year 3 penal servitude, for manslaughter. Licensed 4th November, 1895. G. 1027. Information to the Chief Constable, Central Police Office, Bootle. 33.— Salford ( Borough).— For stealing 4t'i inst.— 1 lady's gold watch; 1 guard and locket ( recovered); 1 lady's gold dress ring, set 4 pearls, and 2 red stone3 ( 2 pearls and 1 red stone missing)— A MAN, age 36 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., very stout, complexion hair and moustache dark; dress, black coat and vest, cord trousers, collar and tie. Good- looking, of res- pectable appearance. He called at a house, and represented himself to be a plumber, sent by the landlord to repair water- tank. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Salford. 34.— Warrington ( Borough).— Portrait and de- scription of JOHN II.
