THX2 GAIET EH1 PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JULY 3, 1896. VOL. XIII., No. 1306 REGULATIONS. 1. All announcements for insertion in tie POLICE GAZETTB, and all communications upon them should be addressed to TUB EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15J. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. Evert/ announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 6 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and at* alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted t » the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They mutt be clearly written on one tide of the paper only, be in the utual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All paymentt must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond S( Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notieeg, on account of their noit being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand bills, or other advertisements, offering a. reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points- fa) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— Tliere are 180 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Noticcs can be posted. sought for stealing from the Militia camp at Houn- slow, 6tli ult., I gentleman's gold half- hunter lever watch, gold dial, chased flowers in centre, engine turned cases ( worn) ; an oval gold locket conta'ning hair, one side chased ivy leaves, the other plain ; 2 ivory back hair brashes, crest— garter with " Martis non Cupidinis" thereon, horse's head in centre; and £ 18 in gold;— Age 33, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scar under chin, right side of forehead, back of left forearm, and front of right forearm, mole centre of chest; dress, dark suit and straw hat. Also wanted for failing to report ( see Gazette, 1st May, 1896). Has served in the 60th Rifles, and is fond of the company of soldiers, and of talking of his exploits in India. Sentenced at Winchester Assizes, 14th November, 1893, to 3 years penal servitude for burglary. Licensed 27th February, 1896. T 531. Warrant issued. 2— K Division. — For obtaining a butcher's cart, < fcc., by means of a worthless cheque, drawn on Messrs. Stephens, Blandy, Barnet and Butler's Bank, Maidenhead ROBOT BAM, alias BUTLER, AUSTIN, WOOD, CROSBY, < fcc, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complexion fresh, full face, hair and moustache ( cut short) dark, bridge of nose broken; c'ress, grey check suit, fttwn coloured overcoat, brown hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BERKSHIRE. 3. — Wantage ( County). — For stealing £ 1 14s. 8^ d.— FREDERICK JENKINS, age about 31, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion sallow, hair and ejes brown, full face, thick lips; dress, dark tweed jacket and vest, light brown striped tweed trousers ( with stains on legs). Usually works in racing stables. Supposed to be a Welshman. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Molsher, Wantage. CHESHIRE. 4— Altrincham ( County).— For stealing an old silver geneva watch, and obtaining food, ' olging*, and money by false pre'etces on 29th ult. — A MAN, age about 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plex: on fresh, hair and moustache light sandy, abscess mark left cheek; dress, dark coat and vest, light plaid trousers, black hard felt hat. Ha obtains lodgings by statirg he i* going to work in the neighbourhood, and shortly afterwards absconds.. Information to Snpt. Biitton, Altrincham. 5— Oakmere ( County).— For stealing ( baileej, a silver English lever watch- HENRY TAYLOR, a German, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in , com- plexion fresh, hair, whiskers and moustache dark brown, walk* lame, right leg being shorter than the left, rolls bis eyes about when ppeaking, speaks broken English; dress, dark coat an! vest, grey stripe trousers, black or blue cloth cip, low shoes. A watch and clock cleaner. Absconded 9ch ult.. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Johnson, Oakmere. DORSETSHIRE. 6. — Shaftesbury ( County). — For stealing, 20th ult., painters' tools ( recovered), and a pair of paperhanger's scissors ( recently ground) — FRED WILLS, alias SMITH ( supposed false), age 50, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., hair, whiskers, and moustache dark ( turning grey), head and body of man tattooed on chest, speaks with London accent > dress, black coat and vest, brown small striped trousers, brown cap, military boots. A tramping- painter or rough carpenter. Left Shaftesbury OD- 21st ult. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Elford, Shaftesbury. 7— Sherborne ( County). — For de? ertin^ his children, at Yetminster, on 15th July, 1895, leaving tl em chargeable to the Sherborne Union— E RNEST JEFFORD, age 35, he-' ght about 5 ft. 9 in., com- plexion and hair dark. Has served in the Army. Worked on the Portland breakwater about 2 yearj ago, and is now supposed to be working on the Manchester Ship Canal. Warrant usaed. Information to Supt. STEWARD ( Ca= e No. 99, 19th ult.), is also wanted for obtaining, by false pretences, 18th ult., a new English concertina, 48 keys, maker—" Lach- well," on label, very dark mahogany and light mahogany case, lined with violet plush, the leather clip for little finger on right side of instrument is slightly worn; a 12- bore hammerless gun, " Anson and Duley" action cross bolt, number 3248 on barrels and strap of guard, makers—" Leech & Son, Chelmsford," thereon, barrels stoel blacked, black- and white check cover, bound with brown leather, and 25 cartridges; 1 pair new black leather button boots, size 8, spliced at sides, plain fronts; 1 pair new boots, without toe- cap3, size 8; 1 pair lady's brown leather button boots, size 3^, piece patched on inside; 1 pair new glazed black leather button boots, size 7 ; and a new clock, with barometer and thermometer, in walnut case, 7 in. high by 10 in. loDg, known as the H. A. C.— maker, Jughans, Germany. The pony, cart, & c., described in Case No. 99, 19th ult., have been recovered at Stratford. Warrant issued. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 9.— Cardiff ( Borough)— For abduction and having carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 16, 2nd ult— TREGENNIS JONES, alias TIM or TOM JONES, age 18, height about 5 ft. 1 in., slight build, complexion fair, long thin face, hair and small moustache light, heavy eyebrows light, eyes ( small) grey, tattooed on right arm, cut scar under one eye; dress, blue jacket and vest, dark trousers, blue cloth peak cap. A barber, supposed to be tramping the country; native of Chepstow. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Car- diff. HERTFORDSHIRE. 10.— H e rtf O r d ( County).— For stealing, bet ween 1st and 3rd ult., a diamond frame safety bicycle, pneumatic tyres, ball bearings, rubber pedals, straight handles, tangent spokes, changeable gear, lamp and pump, makers, Turner, Fellows & Co., Birmingham," and " J. Wakett, 81, St. Andrews- street, Hertford," on tube— GEORGE TINKLAR, alias A. CARBY, age 28, height 5 ft. 3^ in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, moustache light, eyes grey. A stonemason. Wairant issued. Information to Supt. Parish, Hertford. 11. — H itchi n ( County).— For breach of poundage, by releasing horses impounded at Icklcford, on 10th nit.— WILLIAM GREAVES, alias GASCOYNE, ago about 50, li- ight 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, com- plexion fresb, full face, hair inclined to sandy, slight moustache ginger, eyes blue; dre.' s, red- and- blue jersey, striped trousers, blue neckerchief, white straw hat with wide brim. A horse- dealer. Native of Bury St. Edmunds. Travels the country with a van painted brown, with red lines on panels, " William Greaves, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk," in white letters over front; accompanied by a man with a chocolate- coloured van, several horses, a groyhoand bitch with 2 pups, and a black retriever dcg. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reynolds, Hitchin. 12— Watford ( County).— For larceny ( bailee) — HARRY PALMER, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair ( bald on top) and mous- tache blatk, eyes dark brown. Has a gold- stopped troth in upper jaw. Speaks with West country accent; drefs, brown suit, morning coat, white tie, 1 . c boots. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Turner, Watford. KENT. 13 — Maidstone ( Borough).— For obtaining a chegue fi r £ 5 by false pretences, on 1st ult.— A woman who gave the name of GERTRUDE FIELD, age about 37, height about 4 ft. 11 in., very ttout build, complexion, hair ( cut short and cniitd in fivnt) dark; dross, blue serge skirt, with 3 rows of black braid round bottom, light blouse, black tight- fitting jacket, brown straw hat, trimmed brown velvet and feathers. Of Jewish appearance. Stated that her first husband kept a lodging- house at Worthing. Was accompanied by a man, whom she represented to bo her husband, age 29, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., very thin build, complexion fair, hair and moustache light, large scar left temple, walks badly, as if suffering from rheumatism; dress, light suit, black hard felt hat. They too* lodgings on 38th April last, and left on 2nd ult. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Mackintosh, Maidstone. LEICESTERSHIRE. 14.— Leicester ( Borough). — For stealing £ 3, 22nd ult.— BERT TAYLOR, age about 26, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair light brown, moustache light; dress, light suit, silk hat. Stated he was a doctor. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leicester. LINCOLNSHIRE. 15.— Spilsley ( County).— For housebreaking, at Midville, 20th ult., and stealing a small tin box containing about 16s.— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion very dark; dress, old light dust- coat, cord trousers, red neckerchief, very dirty appearance. A tramp. Supposed to belong to Nottingham, to be known at most casual wards in England, and to have been previously convicted of housebreaking and other offences. Information to Supt. Wood, Spilsley. 16.— Grantham ( Borough).— For assault, 22nd ult,— JOHN CUNNINGHAM, ago 26 to 30, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, heavy moustache, eyes blue ; dress, dark blue jacket, grey trousers, red handkerchief, light brown cap.— ALFRED CUNNINGHAM, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion and hair dark, full face; dress, dark coat and vest, dark brown trousers, hard felt hat. Militiamen; have just completed training with 3rd and 4th Battalions Lincolnshire Regiment. Left Grantham, 23rd ult., for Newark, accompanied by their wives, whose apprehensions are sought for larceny : 1st, the wife of John Cunningham, age 20 ; dress, light grey dress, large shawl, mixed colours— 2nd, wife of Alfred Cunningham, age 40, tall, thin ; dress, dark dress, grey shawl, light cap. They left at their lodgings a pawnticket for a box of tools, pledged on 6th March last with F. Clark & Sons, 29, Listergate, Nottingham. Warrant issued. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 17.— Abergavenny ( County).— For stealing a lady's gold watch and chain ( recovered), and 1 grey plaid jacket, " Greenhouse and Scribbin" on tab, 2 Jubilee half- crowns, 1 Jubilee florin, 1 Jubilee shilling, and a pair of brown socks — JOHN DAVIES, age about 40, height 5 ft. 5 to 7 ins., complexion sunburnt, hair and small moustache light; supposed to be wearing the stolen jacket. A native of Somersetshire. Is accompanied by his wife, age about 33, height 5 ft. 2 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair light; dress, dark dress, hat or cap, leather belt with large buckle, carries a square basket, and hawks boot laces, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Davies, Abergavenny. NORFOLK. 18.— Holt ( County). — For stealing from his lodgings, an old- fashioned silver verge watch, with curb- pattern silver chain and compass attached— CHARLES HARDY, age 18 to20, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eye3 brown, tattooed woman, palm tree and snake on right arm. Has lost upper front teeth; dress, brown knitted Jersey, blue cloth trousers, blue peak cap. Native of Docking, Norfolk. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Willmott, Holt. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 19.— Newark ( Borough).— For neglecting his family— HENRY WILDS, ago about 35, height 5 . ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, 2 or 3 upper front teeth deficient, turns his toes out. A brewer's labourer. Native of Newark, which place he left on 29th February last. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Challen, Newark. OXFORDSHIRE. 20— Woodstock ( County).— For obtaining £ 10 by false pretences, at Kidlington, on 17th ult.— WILLIAM BISHOP, alias DIVER BISHOP, age about 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pa'e, hair ( cut very short) and moustache dark, 03 es supposed hazel; dress, dark coat and vest, strapped seams, blue plaid tight- fitting trousers, dark bluo neckerchief, b'ack hard felt hat. Hawks ferrs in baskets, & c., about the country, and believed to bo well known in Wantage, Swindon, Bath, Reading, Abingdon, and Oxford; last seen in Wantage oa 25th ult, of which place he is supposed 10 be a native. Warrant issued. 21.— Woodstock ( County).— For stealing, 24th ult,, at Kidlington— A lady's grey cloth open £ jacket, tailor made, lined blue - and - grey shot silk, one sleeve slightly torn, 2 buttons ioside to attach belt — ALICE BISHOP, alias RANDALL, age about 25, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in , complexion fair, hair ( very frizzy in front) auburn, eyes ( supposed) blue; dress, grey skirt, grey double- breasted jacket to match, black hat with black or grey tips. May be wearing stolen jacket. Native of Oxford. Travels the country with William Bishop, described above. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Sorrel!, Woodstock. RADNORSHIRE. 22.— Penybont ( County).— For stealing a silver English lever watcb, No. 10434, hunter case, glass and cap missing, steel chain attached— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion tanned, hair dark ( turning grey), beard of about 3 weeks' growth ; dress, dark jacket, small cord trousers ( torn at one knee) dark cap, strong lace boots; has some recent cuts on face and above one eye, supposed ti have been working on the Steens Bridge and Bromyard Line. Information to the Chief Constable of Radnor- shire, Penybont. SHROPSHIRE. 23.— Church Stretton ( Oounty).— For steal- ing, 12th ult., at Rushbury, a lever watch, white- metal case, white- metal chain, curb pattern, key with " John Binks, Bury New- road, Manchester," thereon, attached— SAMUEL HODGETTS, age 29, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, pimples on face, hair brown, eyes hazel; dress, grey cloth coa% black vest, brown cord trousers ( usually strapped below knees), brown cloth cap, lace boots. A farm labourer; native of Carter's- lane, Quinton, Worcestershire. Information to Inspector Lewis, Church Stretton. 24.— Ludlow ( County).— Portrait and descrip- tion of License Holder CHARLES BROOKS alias CHARLES STANLEY SCALFI, DAVID EDWARDS, JOHN LEA, and CHARLES FLETCHER, Office No. 199- 6, whose apprehension is sought for obtaining 3 horses by means of worth- less cheques on the Birmingham and District Bank, Ludlow, on the 16th and 27th May, age 24 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 4 in., slight build, complexbn TUESDAY, JUNE 23. 1896. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 3 fbir, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes brown, scar urider loft eye and right groin, large mole right shoulderb'ade ; dressed in lavender - and - brown tweed jacket and vest, cotton cord breeches and gaiters, black- and- whitj straw hat, lace boots; native of Birmingham. He opent d acorn factor's shop at Ludlow, in April last, and obtained goods to a large amount, which he removed ( o other places, and sold by public auction. Was seen in the district of Chipping Norton, on 2nd ult., where his brother waa arrested. Was convicted at Birmingham, 27th October, 1890, a d f entenced on 2 charges to 12 months hard ] . bour each ( concurrent) ; at Wolverhampton Ses- sions. 18th March, 1892, to 6 months hard labour for obtaining furniture by false pretences ; and at Exetsr Sessions, 17th October, 1893, to 3 jears penal servitude for conspiracy and fraud. Hayward, Ludlow. £ 1 REWARD. 25. — Wellington ( Oounty). — For stealing, 20th ult., at Tong, a pneumatic safety bicycle, " The Diamond,'' 1895 patterj, No. 4372 below handle- bar, figure of a diamond on front, and the words The Diamond " makers above, and " D. H. and S , Wolverhampton," below diamond frame, back tubes plated about 3 in from siddle, wheels same height, tangent f- pokes, lf- in. tyres, no mud- guards, rat- trap pedals, ends filed level, Carter's patent gear- case, lamp and bell attached— A MAN, age about 24, height 5 fr. 9 or 10 in , complexion fresh, slight moustache, very dark ; dress, black jacket and vest, dark trousers with red stripes across, white collar and blue bow tie, light cord cap ; wore silver watch chain with shilling and medal attached. Came from direction of Wolverhampton. Stated he worked at Clarke's Bicycle Works. Left behind an old cushion tyre bicyc'e, No. 570 on handle- bar, ha'f- diarnond frame, ro mud- guards, brake, or handles, silver shield roughly soldered on front, with " Geo. Marshall, maker, Coventry, 1892" thereon. The above reward will be paid by Thomas Fowler, Hawthorn- road, Blakenhall, Wolverhampton, for such info'mation as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thief and recovery of tho bicycle. SOMERSETSHIRE. 26. — Wincanton ( Oounty). — For failing to report— License Holder CHARLES READ, alias CHARLES LUCAS, HENRY HENCE, and CHARLES SCOTT, Office No. 1593- 6; age 65, height 5 ft 4 in., complexion fresh, hair grey, eyes grey, long scar on right temple, large red scar on " Adam's apple," scar between shoulderblades, inside left upper arm, back of left lower arm, left wrist, on front and back of right forearm, between 1st and 2nd j iuti 3rd right finger ( inside), 2 outside right buitock, 2 outside left leg, 1 front of left shin, and hick of left calf, large wart on left ribs, 2 vaccina- tion marks on left arm, and 1 on right arm Sen- tenced at Taunton Assizes, 26th November, 1888, to 10 yearj peaal servitude for burglary. BURTON ( supposed false), age about 25, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, har light brown, slight light moustache; dress, dark suit, soft black American hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt.
