ICE GAZETTE, and all communication, upon them should be addressed to IHB EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD LONDOJT, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTK, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the pay vent must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious ofences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less r* nk than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no wan ant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed hy the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analoao'ix thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and at i alphabetically arranged by counties. 0. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whiih mag result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwaraed so as to be received not Inter than noonon Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper oniy, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. SPECIAL NOTICE. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is unwilling to incur any expense with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communication sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption ot such a course will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE QjaiTTB is circulated in the Colonies. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. HAYES, alias HAAS, age 35. height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, comp'exion fresh hair, whiskers, and moustache dark browD, eyes small ( dark), of Jewish appearance; dress, blue melton overcoat, dark trousers, silk hat, lace boots. They advertise in London and Provincial news papers for small loans for a short period, offering a good bonus and security deposited with lender for three times the amount of the loan, but stipulate that only private persons need apply. The security offered consists of pawnbrokers' deposit notes or tickets relating to jewellery pledged to its full value. They alsD represent that they are jewellers and dealers in precious stonep, and when they succeed in obtaining a loan they give a promissory note for the amount and bonus, leaving the tickets as guarautee. False names and addresses are usually given, the letters being addressed to newspaper or tobacconists' shops. When the leans become due, the lender is left to realise on the tickets, when it is found that the expense in redeeming the property is mora than its value. It is requested that observation be kept on such advertisements with a view to securing the arrest of these men, who have carried on this class of offence for many years. Warrant issued. 3.— H Division.— For obtaining £ 7 10s., on 6th nit., by means of a worthless cheque on Metropolitan Bank of England, 60, Gracechurch- street — JOHN SOLOMONS, alias JOHS" P. EMERY, age 21, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion, hair, and moustache dark, Roman nose, scar under right eye, 2 small ditto right wrist, has gooi teeth, thick lips; wears eye- g'asses; dress, ong dark overcoat, black frock coat and vest, grey tweed trousers, black hat. Native of London. Stated he was a critic for the " Era " newspaper. May be found at theatres or music- halls. Warrant issued. ARGYLLSHIRE. 5.— Lochgilphead ( County). — For fraud, by means of fictitious cheques— RICHARD DURN- FORD, or RICHARD PERCIVAL DURNFORD, an Episcopal clergyman, late of Upper Sonachan, Dalma ly, age 50, beight about 5 ft. 10 in., stoops slightly, complexion fresh, hair, whiskers and moustache light reddish ( turning grey), has peculiar set eyes ( the left being nearer nose than right), wears gold spectacles; dress, clerical suit, soft felt hat. Native of Sudbury, Suffolk. Left Glasgow for Euston Station, London, 13th ult. Had with him a quantity of luggage, 2 bicycles, and small terrier dog. Warrant issued. CARDIGANSHIRE. £ 2 REWARD. 7.— Llandyssul ( County). — Portrait and de- scription of JAMES EVANS, whose apprehension is sought for deserting his wife and famdy, leaving them chargeable to the Union— Age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, complexion fresb, hair brown, heavy sandy monstache, birthmark on chest, scar above one knee, smart appearance, stoops slightly when walking. Has served in a police force; subsequently became a game- keeper. He worked at Aberdare last summer, and afterwards on a farm at Tulgaith. Last heard of at Knighton, Radnorshire, wbere he was employed by the Bir- mingham Corporation. A Welshman. Was accom- panied by a short slight woman and a baby. Warrant issued. DURHAM. 11.— South Shields ( Borough).— For house- breaking and stealing, 23rd ult.— 2 silver bracelets ( recovered); 1 silver thimble; 1 gold crescent brooch, set brilliants; 1 gold wedding ring ; 1 gold flowered keeper— A man who gave the name of GEORGE PURVIS ( supposed false), age about 19 or 20, height about 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes ( full) dark; dress, black or very dark jacket and vest, dark trousers ( lighter than jacket) ; smart appearanee; good address. He offered the bracelet in pledge, but, on finding he was suspected, made his escape. Information to Chief Constable Morant, South Shields. HAMPSHIRE. 12.— Gosport ( County).— For stealing, 19fch ult., a hand truck ( recovered) — WILLI A. M FITZ- GERALD, alias YANKEE, age 29, height 5 ft. 7£ in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, eyes blue, 2 dots tattooed left arm, burn mark right leg ; dreesed in | brown overcoat, dark brown trousers, light skull cap. A rag and bone collector, and makes and sells hassocks. Is accompanied by his wife, ago about 23, rather short, complexion fresh, hair dark brown ; dress, blue bodice, with bugle trimming down front, black silk sleeve', black skirt, bte.- k broad - brimmed hat with black feathers; carrying a baby about 7 months old. May be found in common lodging or low public- houses. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Silver, Gosport. 13.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing, 1st inst., an 18- ct. gold buckle ring, set 2 diamonds, buckle and strap chased, " 405, Oo, oe " scratched inside— A MA. N, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion florid, hair brown, moustache light brown, left ear jigged as if from injury, large rough hands; dress, double- brea9ted blue overcoat, dark trousers, tan boots, country appearance. He called at a jeweller's and asked to be shewn some rings, but did not make a purchase, and left the shop, stating that he had to meet his wife who was coming from Exeter, but would call again. He left a card with " Mr. J. Beal, Friend & Beal, Solicitors, Exeter" thereon, which he had LO authority to use. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 14.— Southampton ( Borough). — For being concerned with William Harvey, in custody, for shopbreaking, and stealing a quantity of dog collars, money belts, purses, & c., on 26th February last ( see Case No. 59, 27th nit.) — HARRY WALTER COOPER, alias MYERS, age 25, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, 2 scars on forehead. Has served in Royal Artillery; previously convicted of stealing centre- bits, at Netley, Hants, in August, 1895, and of stealing a coat at Portsmouth. A painter; native of Batley, Hants. HERTFORDSHIRE. 15.— Hertford ( County).— For obtaining £ 5 by false pretences— GEORGE GRAY, a cloth and woollen manufacturer's traveller, age about 45, height about 5 ft. 8^ in., complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) light. He calls upon tradesmen with whom he has previously done business, states he is short of cash, and obtains money in exchange for a worthless cheque. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. ISLE OF WIGHT. £ 50 REWARD. 16.— Newport ( County).— Portrait and descrip- tion of CHARLES JOHNSON, whose appre- hension is Bought for shopbreaking, 25th ulfc, and stealing a cash- box, containing £ 1,200 in gold, in (• mall linen bags; 4 Jubilee £ 5 pieces, 2 £ 5 pieces, dated 1888, and other Jubilee coins, and £ 10 iQ silver; a quantity of old guineas and half- guineas; several Spanish doubloons; 20 American dollar pieces; French coins ; 1 100- frwc piece; a quantify of Aimy medals; 1 gold geneva watchAge 23 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, fall face, hair dark, eyes brown, moustache ( inclined to sandy) dark, scar inside and under right ankle, 2 boil scars base of spine, 2 small soars over breast, cut scar left thumb and forehead ( over right eye); dresj, dark suit, f- length dark overcoat, black round- crown hat; carried a brown fquare hand- bag, 18 in. by 9 in. Appearance of a commercial traveller. Is known at Cardiff, Gloucester, and Portsmouth. Warrant Issued. The above reward will[ be paid by Mr. John Pike, jeweller, Newport, for such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thief, and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. LEICESTERSHIRE. 17.— Melton Mowbray ( County).— For steal- ing ( bailee), on 14th February last, a small trolley, 4 wheels, built on the underwork of an old phaeton, very narrow on track, painted green with white lines, oval lancewood shafts, has a large movable driving box, " R. Ivor, Licensed Dealer, Melton," painted on right side, and " E. Hinman, owner," painted underneath tail- pin — RICHARD IVOR, age abont 35, height about 5 ft. 9 in., rather slight build, complexion fair, hair aud moustache browD, clean shaved; dress, ( when last seen), brown check suit and cloth peak cap. A painter; but has lately been hawkiug oranges, fish, & c. Left Mowbray, 14th February last. Usually stays at common lodging houses. Was accompanied by his wife, age about 35, height about 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair sandy ; dress, drab dress and jacket, dark bonnet. Warrant issued. LINCOLNSHIRE. 18.— Spalding ( County).— For obtaining food by false pretences— A MAN, age 70, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, hair ( bald on top) grey, small side whiskers and moustache, jaw disfigured; dress, grey overcoat, bluo pilot janket with velvet collar, brown mixture trousers, black felt hat, lace boots, wore 4 medal ribbons on left breast of vest. He represented himself to be Sergeant W. E. Wallis, au old soldier, in receipt of 17s. 6d. per week pension. He induces the people with whom he stajs to write to a daughter at Woolwich, and, under the pretence of going to a neighbouring post office to draw his pension, absconds. MERIONETHSHIRE. 20.— Festiniog ( County).— For housebreaking 17th ult., at Harlech, and stealing 1 leather purse with clasp, containing £ 11 Is.— GEO. TAYLOR, alias WILLIAM HENRY TAYLOR, age 18, height 5 ft. 6 in., thin features, carries his head lorward ; dress ( when last seen), black jacket and vest, brown cord trousers, bluchar boots, and cap. Supposed to be well known at Newaik, Nottinuhamshire, where he has been convicted of larceny, highway robbery, and larceny from a dwelling house. Tramps the country, and frequents casual waids and common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Morgans, Festinirg. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 21.— Risca ( County). — For stealing boots, wearing apparel, & c.— GEORGE HUSSEY, age 31, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair and heavy moustache light, scar on forehead, 2 scars on upper lip, 2 teeth deficient in upper jaw. NORTHUMBERLAND. 22.— Newcastle- on- Tyne ( City) — For steal- ing a cheque for £ 7 ( bailee)— WILLIAM PER- C1VAL NORRISH, age about 24, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion very fresh, hair light brown, slight light moustache, eyes blue, double chin, portion of right index finger deficient; dress, dark suit, hard felt hat. A bombardier of the 7th Field Battery, Ro. val Artillery. He enlisted, at Rending, in November, 1890, when he stated he was a butcher. Supposed a native of Malmesbury, Wiltshire. Information to the Chief Constable, Newcastle- on- Tyne. ROXBURGHSHIRE. £ 10 REWARD. 23 — Hawick ( Burgh).— Portrait and descrip- tion of GEORGE GRAY, alias SIDNEY CHARLES TAYLOR, late of 9, Stratford- villas, Parkside- road, Hounslow, whose apprehension is sought for em- bezzlement and forging bills to the amount of £ 233 — Age 45, height 5 ft. 8£ in., complexion sallow, thin face, hair and moustache light ( turning grey), deep voice ; dros3, morning coat and vest, silk hat. A commercial traveller; represented a Scotch tweed firm and a Huddersfield cloth firm in the Midlands, where ho is well known to tailors and clothiers. Tho photograph, although taken nearly 20 years ago, still resembles him. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Messrs. Innes, Chambers < fc Co., Hawick, for such information as will lead to the arrest of Gray. Information to Chief Constable Macdonald, Hawick. SHROPSHIRE. 24. — Shrewsbury ( County). — For stealing, 2nd ult., £ 60 ; a lady's small silver watch, gold figuring on face, has been repaired by a watchmaker at Cork, whose label may be inside case, thin gold chain, plain pattern, with tassels at end attached ; and a lady'd rough black serge double- breasted janket, large black buttons, pockets on hips— KATE HUGHES, age 22, height about 5 ft. 1 in., rather stout tuild, complexion fresh, full face, hair brown, eyes grey, lost second joint third finger left hand ; sppaks with Welsh accent; dress ( when last seen) grey speckled gimp dress, black- and- white speckled straw hat, and the stolen jacket. A domestic servant; has been in situations at Aberystwyth, Llandudno, and Liverpool. Native of Colwyn Bay, Denbighshire. Was for some years in Bangor Woik house. May be found in service, workhouse, home, or at places where militia or volunteers assemble for training. Attends Salvation Army meetings. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Edge, Shrewsbury. STAFFORDSHIRE. 25. — Brownhills ( County).. — For obtaining money by false pretences, 18th ult.— IDA GREY, alias SMITH, age about 24, height 5 ft. 3 in., com- plexion pale, hair very dark, very small fringe in front, eyes dark; dress, brown double- breasted jacket with fur collar, black dress ( flowered ma- terial), black cashmere gloves, small black hat, trimmed black and red velvet and 2 black wings, low shoes ; carried a black umbrella with brown crook handle. Stated she was a native of South- ampton. She takes private lodgings, stating that her uncle has recently died in Australia, and left her an estate there, and that she is about to obtain money from her solicitor, borrows money to get her luggage from the railway station, and absconds. Barrett, Brownhills. 26.— Burslem ( County).— For stealing scrap iron ( recovered)— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., rather stout build, complexion dark, hair and heavy moustache dark, eyes brown; dress, old black suit, muffler, black hard hat, lace boots. A hawker or rag gatherer ; travels the conntry, and stays at common lodging houses. Native of New- castle- under- Lyme. Information to Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem. 27.— Stafford ( County).— On a warrant for obtaining food and lodgings at Stone, on March 30th, and food and money at Stafford, on March 31st, 1896, by falsely pretending he was employed on the telegraph line, and he wanted the money to get his boxes from the railway station— Expiree THOMAS TATTERSALL, alias JOHN THOMAS TATTER- SALL, Office No. 48696, age 40, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, sailor inside right forearm, scar on left eyebrow, back of head, left side of neck ( under ear), on upper lip, inside left wrist, left breast, 2 on right breast, and large scald scar upper part of chest, lost all front upper teeth, right leg has been sprained in thigh, walks a little lame, may wear an elastic bandage ; dressed in dark blue jacket and trousers ( the latter worn at bottoms, and patched on one knee), brown vest, fawn- coloured cap, white collar, dark coloured satin tie, lace- up boots. Has 2 rings on 4th left finger. Has been convicted of fraud at Surrey Sessions, Canterbury, Folkestone, Salford, and was sentenced at Stafford Quarter Sessions, 15th October, 1889, to five years penal servitude, for obtaining goods by- false pretences; and at Stafford Quarter Sessions, 17th October, 1893, to 12 months hard labour, and license revoked for a similar offence.
