MP JE3I JU PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JANUARY 31, 1896. VOL. XIII., No. 1262 REG- ULATIONS. 1. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOE OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAED, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Evert! announcement, iffor the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 1. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analoaO" i thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and at j alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted inr the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, tall be wholly responsible for any proceedings which mai/ result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OP PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identifica- tion by the Metropolitan Police the Photo- graphs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from Bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door; stealing bale of silk; van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. THORPE, age 45, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fair, hair, whiskers and moustache iron grey; wears pepper- and- salt overcoat, or black waterproof with cipe, black hard hat. Carries a black bag and umbrella. He calls upon small shopkeepers, represents that he is agent for the Sun Insurance Com pany, and obtains money under the pretence of insuring their stock, & o. Warrant issued. 2 — C Division.— Portrait and description of J. F. CLARK, alias TOM SMITH, GIPSY SMITH, and TOM, THE BARMAN, whose apprehen- sion is sought for obtaining jewellery ( recovered) by means cf a forged cheque on the London and County Bank, Oxford- street Bi anch— Age 36, height 5 ft. 9. in., complexion ruddy, bald ou top of head, heavy moustache brown; dress, blue overcoat, ligbt- and- dark check vest, grey trousers ( small stripe), black felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 3. — For fraudulent bankruptcy — HYAM BENJAMIN, a Jew, late of 25, Pembroke- gardens, S. W. age 54 height 5 ft. 6 in., stent build, com- plexion fresh, hair aud moustache dark; dresses well, sometimes wears an overcoat trimmed with astrachan, and an Alpine bat. A stock and share broker. BEDFORDSHIRE. 4.— Leighton Buzzard ( County). — For housebreaking and stealing, 26th inst, 1 gentleman's silver lever watch, " Jabez Garside " engraved inside case; 2 gold horseshoe pins ; I gold pin; 1 broad silver bracelet, enamelled, brooch, earrings amd locket to match; 1 plain silver bracelet, and £ 21 — A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark, of respectable appearance and pood address; wore black overcoat, and black hard felt hat. Information to Supt. Anniwell, Leighton Buzzard. BERKSHIRE. 5. — Wallingford ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences, 10th inst.— J. LOVJOY, ( supposed false), age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, hair black, eyes dark; dress, black cloth overcoat, black suit, black hard felt hat, strong lace boots, wore 3 military ribbons on breast. Stated he was a Government Inspector, and foreman of telegraph engineers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Borlase, Wallingford. 6. — Reading ( Borough). — For deserting his wife and family — GEORGE PAXTON, age 34, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stont build, complexion fresb, hair ( long and curled in front) dark brown, moustache ( long aud curled at ends) light brown, short side whiskers; a brick- layer's labourer. Has worked in stables, and may seek similar employment; believed to be a native of Oxford. Supposed accompanied by a young woman. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. BRECONSHIRE. 7. — Brecon ( County). — For larceny, 16th inst. — THOMAS LEWIS, age 42, height ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion sallow, rather long face, hair brown, heavy moustache sandy- brown; dress, old brown sack coat, dirty slop, mole- skin trousers, old militia boots, cloth cap. Is addicted to drink. Served 12 years in Royal Artillery, and now belongs to the Carmarthen Militia Artillery; boasts of his smartness as a soldier. A hawker, sometimes works as a farm labourer. Was last seen near Hirwain, going in direction of Aberdare; is well known at Carmarthen. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Joseph, Brecon. 2 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. November 1st.— 1 do. do., No. 8051. lst nit.— 1 do. do, No. 34312, white dial, steel pointers, flowered case9. 9th ult.— 1 do. do., No. 76961. 16th ult.— 1 gentleman's gold lever, No. 63821, white dial, flowered round edge of cases. 20th ult,— 1 silver lever, No. 27004. 27th ult.— 1 English do., No. 51697, compensation balance; 1 small silver, No. 997710935, white dial, flowered cases. 31st ult.— 1 gold lever, No. 1877, white dial, black chapters, 1 black and 1 white pointer; and 1 silver Boston lever, white dial, gold pointers, plain cases— JAMES REDPATH, age 21, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, long features, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes blue, square shoulders, walks very erect; dress, grey jacket suit with narrow blaok stripe running throngh, brown tweed peak cap, large crown, hooks in front, points of collar turned down, dark tie, lace boots. Has served ill the Army. Warrant issued. 10.— South Shields ( Bwough).— For em- bezzling £ 5 Is. Od.— CHARLES O'RILEY, age about 38, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion dark, hair ( ioclined to curl) and moustache dark brown, side whiskers, high cheekbones, pug nose; dress, when last seen, black coat and vest, brown tweed trousers, dark tweei peak cap ( dirty and shabby) ; is well educated, has been employed as clerk at a marine store- dealer's at Gateshead, and may seek similiar employment. May be found at common lodging- houses, or in company of hawkers. Was last seen on 11th inst. at Newcastle- on- Tyne. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Morant, South Shields. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 11.— Gloucester ( County).— For stealing, 17th inst. ( with another man, in custody), £ 22 17s. lOd. from a post office— CHARLES JOHNSON, age 22, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, round face, hair and eyes brown, scar inside and under right ankle, 2 small boil s: ars base of spine, 2 small scars on breast, cut scar left thumb and over right eye; dress, dark suit ( supposed serge), brown boots, hard bowler hat, may be wearing long brown close- fitting overcoat. Has been several times previously con- victed of till t'obbery. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Philpott, Gloucester. ' 12.— Northleach ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences, through the " Exchange and Mart" newspaper, at Broadwell, on 8th November last, 1 gold engagement ring— R. NORTON, alias CAPTN. NORTON, age about 54, height about 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair and moustache grizz'ed grey. He had the ring and letters addressed to 125, Greenwich- road, Greenwich. Warrant issued. Net to be arrested ont of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Everiss, Northleach. ISLE OF ELY. 17.— Ely ( County).— For stealing 1 bag, 1 drake, and 2 ducks. at Haddenham— THOMAS SMITH, alias TOMMY HARDING, and MURF1TT, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft., complexion very dark, hair and eyes dark, wide mouth, good teeth ; appearance of a gipsy; dress, dark coat and cap, cord trousers. Warrant issued. Information to Sapt. Barrows, Ely. HAMPSHIRE. 13.— Bournemouth ( County).— For obtain ing money by means of fictitious cheques — WILLIAM HENRY PLOWDEN EYTON, age about 55, height about 6 ft., hair ( turning grey) and heavy moustache brown, broad shoulders, walks erect, wears cotton wool in ears; dress ( sappossd), brown overcoat, silk facings, Norfolk jacket, knickerbockers, plaii stockings, bro; vn spats, brown drab flat- top hard hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Bournemouth. 14.— Winchester ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences— A MAN, age about 45, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fair, hair, moustache, and beard light, eyes bright aud full, appearance of an engine- driver, speaks with north- country accent; dress, tweed jacket, greasy blue engine- driver's slop, check trousers and cap. Stated h3 was an engine- driver, collecting subscriptions in aid of an offioial who had been injured. Warrant issued. 15. — Winchester ( County). — For assault at Crawley, on 9< h inst.— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 8 in., complexion ruddy, hair brown, scowling expression; wearing long drab covert coat and cap. Had the appearance of having been in the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Sillence, Winchester. 16.— Portsmouth ( Borough). — For stealing, 17th inst.— 1 geit'eman's gold horseshoe pin, pet 9 or 12 rubies and diamonds in c'aw setting— A MAN, age 29 to 30, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light brown. Wore black coat, black hard felt hat, and carried brown gloves. He called at a shop, aud inspected a number of pins, but did not mako a purchase, promising to call later. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. KENT. 18.— Canterbury ( City).— For illegal pawning, 10th inst.— JANE MATTHEWS, age 30 to 32, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion and bair dark, wearing black mantle and skirt. Is accompanied by her husband, age 30 to 32, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion, hair, and small moustache dark; dress, light coat, dark trousers, black hard felt hat. A travelling painter. They have with them two children, ages 3 and 5 respectively. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Canter- bury. 19.— Folkestone ( Borough).— For deserting his wife and family, 1st iost., leaving them chargeable to Eltham Union— LEONARD PAY, age 39, height about 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, broad shoulders, com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache fair, eyes grey, small hands and feet, two rings tattooed 3rd finger left hand, L P and number of dots left arm, birthmark under right nipple. A n aster mariner, may seek employment as captain or mate of a trading vessel. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. Taylor, Folkestone. 20. — Margate ( Borough). — Portrait and de- scription of THOMAS E. ANGELL, whose appre- hension is sought for obtaining a cheque for £ 15 by false pretences, on 2nd August last— Age about 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., hair ( turning grey) and bushy beard black. A master mariner; lately employed on a vessel trading between England and Spain. 21.— Margate ( Borough).— For stealing a small diamond scarf- pin surrounded with pearls, and £ 11 Is. 10d.— WILLIAM WILSON, age about 19, height about 5 ft., complexion fair, hair ( wavy) light, eyes blue, very large mouth, thick lips, bow- legged, large hands and feet, speaks with country accent; dress, black jacket and vest, black trousers ( much worn at bottom), light skull cap, lace boots. Had with him a silver watch and chain, with copper coin at end. Absconded 12th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Farndale, Margate. LANCASHIRE. 22.— Burnley ( County).— For embezzlement— LOUIS WALTON LEIGH, age 23, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes dark, ring tattooed 3rd finger left hand; dress, black worsted jacket ( usual pockets), and double breasted vest, grey tweed trousers, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Barnett, Burnley. 23.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report- License Holder JOHN JONES, Office No. 49057, age 43, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes brown, crucifix and Maltese cro? s back of lower left arm, English and French flags ( crossed), shamrock, & c., on left arm. By trade a tailor; native of Glanconway. Sentenced at Chester City Sessions, 26th December, 1$ 89, to 5 years penal servitude for shopbreaking, and at Ruthin Quarter Sessions, 6th July, 1894, to 6 months bard labour and license revoked for larceny. Liberated on second license 9th ult , which expires 31st March, 1896, P 519. Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. 2 4.— BOOt I e ( Borough) - Forstealing £ 4914s. 4| d", 27th inst.— JOHN WILLIAM HOULT, an Irish- maD, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion sallow, thin face, sunken cheeks, hair black, small side whiskers and moustache dark, eyes dark ; dress, long daik Irish frieze overcoat, black velvet collar, black vicuna coat and vest, grey mixture tweed trousers, heliotrope knitted tie, and black felt hat. A pawnbroker's manager. Was last seen in Manchester. Photo can be seen on application. Warrant issued. ' Information to Chief Constable Cumming, Bootle. LINCOLNSHIRE. 25.— Epworth ( County).— For embezzlement— WILLIAM EVAN GIBSON, age 35 ( looks older), height about 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair, moustache and side whiskers black, is splay- footed ; dress, black coat [ and vest, dark grey trousers, black hard felt hat. A draper's traveller; native of Epworth. Is well- known in London, Croydon, Scarborough, Nottingham, Ripley Grove, Retford, Hull, and Holbeach. Absconded 20th ult. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Arnold, Epworth. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 26.— Tredegar ( County).— For stealing a brown leather purse, band fastening, containing Is. 5^ d— A MAN, age 50 to 55, height 5 ft. 5 to 7 ins., com- plexion fresh, hair grey ( curly), eyes ( rather small) brown, supposed to have a fleshy lump on forehead, and white scar both sides of throat; dress, long black overcoat, blue pilot or serge suit, black hard felt hat, military boots. Said to be a roll- turner at ironworks. He obtains lodgings under the pretence that he is about to commence work in the neighbourhood. Supposed wanted elsewhere. Information to Snpt. Allen, Tredegar. Warrant issued. 28.— Pu I ham Market ( County).— For desert- ing his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Depwade Union— JAMES DYE, ago 73, h. ight 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion pale, hair grey, eye3 brown. Native of Dickleburgh, Norfolk ; may be found in some institution. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pa'mer, Palham Market. NORTHUMBERLAND. 29.— Bert/ vick- On- Tweed ( Borough,). — For failing to report— Liconso Holder JOHN McFAR- LANE, Rogister No. 1024- 95, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair black, eyes broivn, left collarbone deformed, hairy mole at bend of left elbow, foreskin of penis hypertrophied ; a fireman. Sentenced at Edinburgh, 26th Jnne, 1893, to 3 years penal servitude for theft and attempt to ravish. Licensed 26th December, 1895. Inlormation to Head Constable Garden, Berwick. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 30.— Newark ( Borough).— For stealing, 24th inst., 1 lady's 18- ct. gold engagement ring, part curb- chain pattern, and 25s. — A MAN, age about 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion dark, mous- tache dark, otherwi e clean shaved; dress, dark coat and vest, grey trousers, red neckerchief, liaid felt hat. Another man of similar description is believed to bo concerned. Information to Chief Constable Challen, Newark. STAFFORDSHIRE. 31.— Bilston ( County).— For obtaining 4s. 6d. by false pretences at Upper Gornal, on 5th ult.— STEPHEN SAMUEL GEORGE SMITH, age 30, height 5 ft. in., complexion pale, hair light brown, slight light moustache, eyes grey, tattooed S. S C. S. right arm, cross flags on breast; dress, shabby black three- quarter overcoat, brown twee! coat and vest, black billycock hat. Has served in 20( h or 2lst Hussars. A native of Turl- street, Sedgley. Warrant issued. 32— Bilston ( County).— For stealing £ 18 on 20th inst.— RICHARD ' WEEDS, age 21, height 5 ft. 10 in , complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, front teeth decayed, leans forward when walking; dress, black overcoat, dark grey jacket, black serge vest and trou ers, light grey cloth cap. Is a pro- fessional runner ; native of Coseley, near B. lston. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Walters, Bilston. 33. — Stoke- Upon- Trent ( County). — For stealing £ 17, on 21st inst.— JOSEPH WARRI- LOW, age 30, height 6 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair ( very thin on top) and slight moustache light, eyes blue, bracelet tattooed left wrist, round- ehouldered, walks badly; dress, brown overcoat, black jacket and vest, brown cloth trousers, strong lace boots, black hard felt hat. A labourer; sup- posed to have been a cab- driver in London ; native of Stoke- upon- Trent. Is accompanied by a woman, age 20, complexion dark, hair dark brown, burn mark right side of chin. A native of Longton. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Harding, Stoke- upon- Trent. 34.— Wolverhampton ( Borough).— For steal- ing, 17th inst., a brown leather purse containing £ 1 14s. 0d.— A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., clean shaved ; dress, dark clothes, black hard hat. He met a boy in the street, and, having ascertained that he had the money in his possession, picked his pocket and decamped. Supposed wanted for similar offences elsewhere. 35.— Wolverhampton ( Borough).— For un- lawfully abandoning a child, whereby its life was endangered, on 14th ult.— MAGGIE WALTON, alias WORTON, or ROBERTS, age about 33, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion florid, broad features, rather high cheekbones, hair auburn, several cut marks on face. Of very drunken habits; dress ( when last eeen), black skirt, 1 old brown shawl, 1 red and black turnover ditto, old black straw hat, dark trimming. Frequents common lodging- houses. May be accompanied by a man, age about 28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in , complexion pale, hair dark brown, moustache and side whiskers dark; dress, black jacket and vest, dark brown corduroy trousers, black hard felt hat. Wore a white apron and carried a carpenter's la'ge basket. Stated he was a french polisher. Warrant issued. Information to Captain Burnett, Chief Constable, Wolverhampton. SURREY. 36— Farnham ( County).— CALEB CHARLES OLIVER JENNINGS, Case No. 25, 24th inst., has been found drowned. 37.— Guildford ( Borough).— For embezzling £ 3 17s — HENRY LE WRY, age 22 or 23, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion fair ( freckled), rather thin face, hair sandy ( trained over forehead), very slight light moustache, eyes hazel; wearing, when last seen, long grey overcoaf, black hard felt hat. A butcher. Warrant issued. 38— Guildford ( Borough).— For assault— ALBERT LOVELL, age about 36, height about 5 ft. 10 in., hair light brown, very heavy sandy moustache; dress, light jacket ( very dirty), dark trousers and short leather leggings. A tramp. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Warlock, Guild- ford.
