All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAHD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons tvhose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of 7s. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or nnatoaons thpvtn 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, andafi alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to he inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for iniertiun in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwaraed so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. TIIE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identifica- tion by the Metropolitan Police the Photo- graphs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from Bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door; stealing bale of silk ; van unattended, & c,, & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. HENRY KILBY, and CHARLES TOILER, Office No. 47883, who is wanted on a warrant by Maid- stone Borough Police for failing to report, and suspected of committing burglaries and ladder larcenies in the metropolis and provinces, especially in Kent, Surrey, Essex, and Suffolk— Age 58, height 5 ft. 11 in. ( without shoes), complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, long face, spare build, toes cramped on both feet, scar top of head ( left side), back of neck, right shoulderblade, inside right fore- arm, and on back of left hand. Has undergone four sentences of penal servitude for burglary, & c., the last being at Maidstone Sessions, on the 8th January, 1885, to 10 years penal servitude, 7 years police supervision, and to complete former sentence. Licensed 28th March, 1895. Z L 1227. Before he was arrested for that offence, he resided at No. 91, Gravel Lane, Southwark; on liberation in March last, he took a furnished room in a private house in Maidstone. Carries firearms. Special attention is i- equested to detect and arrest this man. 2 Q Division.— Portrait and description of J. F. CLARK, alias TOM SMITH, GIPSY SMITH, and TOM, THE BARMAN, whose apprehen- sion is sought for obtaining jewellery ( recovered) by means of a forged cheque on the London and County Bank, Oxford- street Bianch— Age 36, height 5 ft. 9. in., complexion ruddy, bald on top of head, heavy moustache brown; dress, blue overcoat, ligbt- BERKSHIRE. 3. — Wallingford ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences, 10th inst.— J. LOVJOY, ( supposed false), age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, hair black, eyes dark; dress, black cloth overcoat, black suit, black hard felt hat, strong lace boots, wore 3 military ribbons on breast. Stated he was a Government Inspector, and foreman of telegraph engineers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Borlase, Wallingford. 4.— Reading ( Borough). — On a warrant, for obtaining food by false pretences, on the 8th inst. — License Holder HERBERT FULCHER, alias FISHER, ERNEST FLETCHER, W. SMITH, H. FRANCIS, WM. HOWLE, HERBERT HALL, and HOWARD, Office No. 48909 ( see Gazette, 10th Jan., 1896, Case No. 23), age 28, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eye9 grey, oval face, two bare patches on side of head, mole right side of neck, scar 4th right finger, & s. A whitesmith, born at Wymondham. This man called at a house in this borough, and stated that he was Sergeant Thomas, of the Engineers, and had been recommended to stay there, that he was working on the telegraph near Reading, and made arrangements to pay 15s. per week for board and lodging; he was supplied with several meals, leaving the following day, and haa 2 T H E P<) L I C E G A Z KITE. Has served in the Army. Warrant issued. 7.— South Shields { Borough). — For em- bezzling £ 5 Is. 0d.— CHARLES O'RILEY, age about 38, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion dark, hair ( inclined to curl) and moustache dark brown, side whiskers, high cheekbones, pug nose; dress, when last seen, black coat and vest, brown tweed trousers, dark tweed peik cap ( dirty and shabby) ; is well educated, has been employed as clerk at a marine store- dealer's at Gateshead, and may seek similiar employment. May be found at common lodging- houses, or in company of hawkers. Was last seen on 11th inst. at Newcastle- on- Tyne. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Morant, South Shields. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 8.— Northleach ( County). — For obtaining by false pretences, through the " Exchange and Mart" newspaper, at Broadwell, on 8th November last, 1 gold engagement ring— R. NORTON, alias CAPTN. NORTON, age about 54, height about 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair and moustache grizzled grey. He had the ring and letters addressed to 125, Greenwich- road, Greenwich. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Everiss, Northleach. HAMPSHIRE. 9.— Bournemouth ( County). — For obtain- ing money by means of fictitious cheques — WILLIAM HENRY PLOWDEN EYTON, age about 55, height about 6 ft., hair ( turning grey) and heavy moustache brow n, broad shoulders, walks erect, wears cotton wool in ears ; dress ( supposed), brown overcoat, silk facings, Norfolk jacket, knickerbockers, plaid stockings, brown spats, brown drab flat- top hard hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Bournemouth. 10.— Fareham ( County).— For^ obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— A WOMAN, age 45 to 50, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair light, turning gray; dres3, f length blaok jacket, with large buttons, tight sleeves, dark dress, dark straw boat- shape hat, black veil, low shoes, slate- colour spats, black gloves. Carried an umbrella with crooked handle. Stated she had been sent by the Yicar, who would pay the amount charged. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hack, Fareham. 11. — Winchester ( County). — For assault at Crawley, on 9th inst.— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 8 in., complexion ruddy, hair brown, scowling expression; wearing long drab covert coat and cap. Had tbe appearance of having been in the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Sillence, Winchester. 12.— Portsmouth ( Borough). — For stealing, 17th inst.— 1 gentleman's gold horseshoe pin, set 9 or 12 rubies and diamonds in claw setting— A MAN, age 29 to 30, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light brown. Wore black coat, black hard felt hat, and carried brown gloves. He called at a shop, and inspected a number of pins, but did not make a purchase, promising to call later. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 13. — Southampton ( Borough).— For stealing £ 5 10s.— JAMES CHANNEL, age 4b, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, red face, hair brown, light moustache, right leg has been injured, causing slight lameness, carries head forward, fond of drink ; dress, black waterproof over- coat, dark coat and vest, dark navy- blue serge trousers, black hard felt hat, heavy lace boot, stand- up collar. A labourer; native of Southampton. Warrant issued. HEREFORDSHIRE. 14. — Leominster ( County). — For larceny ( bailee)— ALFRED AUSTIN, age 18, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark brown, slight dark moustache, eyes hazel; dress, short dark jacket and vest, dark grey trousers, blue cloth cap. A Dative of Manchester. Has worked as boots at hotels and at hotel stables; will seek similar employment. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ovens, Leominster. KENT. 15.— Sandwich ( County).— For embezzling £ 6 on 8th inst.— JOHN WATTS, age 24, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes blue, very large scar from skin disease right side of face, turns feet slightly inwards, fond of playing the cornet; dress, reddish- brown suit, black hard felt hat, light lace boots. A milk carrier ; native of Reading. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Chaney, Sandwich. 16. — Margate ( Borough). — Portrait and de- scription of THOMAS E. ANGELL, whose appre- 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., hair ( turning grey) and bushy beard black. A master mariner; lately employed on a vessel trading botween England and Spain. 17.— Margate ( Borough).— For stealing a small diamond scarf- pin surrounded with pearls, and £ 11 Is. 10d.— WILLIAM WILSON, age about 19, height about 5 ft., complexion fair, hair ( wavy) light, eyes blue, very large mouth, thick lips, bow- legged, large hands and feet, speaks with country accent; dress, black jacket and vest, black trousers ( much worn at bottom), light skull cap, lace boots. Had with him a silver watch and chain, with copper coin at end. Absconded 12th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Buck, Margate. LANCASHIRE. 18.— Burnley ( County).— For embezzlement— LOUIS WALTON LEIGH, age 23, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes dark, ring tattooed 3rd finger left hand; dress, black worsted jacket ( usual pockets), and double breasted vest, grey tweed trousers, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Barnett, Burnley. 19.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report- License Holder JOHN JONES, Office No. 49057, age 43, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes brown, crucifix and Maltese cross back of lower left arm, EDgligh and French flags ( crossed), shamrock, & o., on left arm. By trade a tailor; native of Glanconway. Sentenced at Chester City Sessions, 26th December, 1889, to 5 years penal servitude for shopbreaking, and at Ruthin Quarter Sessions, 6th July, 1894, to 6 months hard labour and license revoked for larceny. Liberated on second license 9th ult., which expires 31st March, 1896. P 519. License Holder KATE HIRST, alias HURST, EMILY BROWN, and MARY THOMPSON. Office No. 46826, age 35, height 5 ft. 1 in, com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, stout build, scar left cheek, mole right side nose, blind left eye ; native of Manchester. Sentenced at York Assizes, 3rd December, 1891, to 4 years penal servi- tude for robbery with violence. Liberated on second license, 13th November, 1895, which extends to 21st April, 1896. R 40. Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. LINCOLNSHIRE. 20.— Market Rasen ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences, on 12th November last — JOHN WILLIAMSON, alias JOHN WALKER, age 42, height 6 ft., slight build, complexion fair, hair and moustache light, slight beard; dress, brown or grey coat, bluish jacket, dark vest, drab cord trousers ( all greasy), heavy lace boots. Appearance of an engine driver. A dock labourer; has been employed as a fitter at a foundry. He calls on clergymen and others, representing that he is a railway servant, collecting subscriptions in aid of another who has met with an accident, and who is likely to be off duty for weeks, during which time he will only receive 5s. weekly from the rail- way company. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Burton, Market Rasen. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 21.— Tredegar ( County).— For stealing a brown leather purse band fastening, containing Is. 5-^ d— A MAN, age 50 to 55, height 5 ft. 5 to 7 ins., com plexion fresh, hair grey ( curly), eyes ( rather small) brown, supposed to have a fleshy lump on forehead, and white scar both sides of throat; dress, long black overcoat, blue pilot or serge suit, black hard felt hat, military boots. Said to be a roll- turner at ironworks. He obtains lodgings under the pretence that he is about to commence work in the neighbourhood. Supposed wanted elsewhere. Information to Supt. Supposed wanted for similar offences elsewhere. 23.— Wolverhampton ( Borough).— For un- lawfully fcbandoning a child, whereby its life was endangered, on 14lh ult.— MAGGIE WALTON, alias W ORTON, or ROBERTS, age aSout 33, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., comp'exion florid, broad features, rather high cheekbones, ha'r auburn, several cnt ma- ks on face. Of very drunken habits; dres6( when last eeen), black skirt, 1 old brown shawl, 1 red and black turnover ditto, old black straw hit, dark trimming. Frequents common ' o ^ ging- houses May be accompinied by a man, age about 28, height 5 fr. 8 or 9 in , complexion pale, bair dark brown, moustache and side whiskers dark; dress, black iackft and vest, dark brown corduroy trousers, black hard felt hat. SUFFOLK. 21.— Framlingham ( County).— For deserting her child — EMMA. CARTER, sga 20, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair light auburn, eyes grey; native of Hacheslon, Suffolk. Warrant issued. SURREY. 25.— Farnham ( County).— Portrait and descrip- tion of CALEB CHARLES OLIVER JENNINGS, m whose apprehension is sought for laiceny ( servant): Age about 80, height 6 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache aud small side- whiskers, rather round- shouldered, stoops ; wearicg long dark blue overcoat with velvet collar, and dark trousers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bryant, Farnham. 26.— Guildford ( Borough).— For embezzling £ 3 17s.— HENRY LEWRY, age 22 or 23, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion fair ( freckled), rather thin face, hair sandy ( trained over forehead) very slight light moustaifce, eyes bazel ; wearing, when last seen, long grey overcoa\ b'ack bard felt hat. A butcher. Warrant issued. 27.— Guildford ( PoroMflA).— For assault— ALBERT LOVELL, age about 36, height about 5 ft. 10 in., hair light brown, very heavy sandy moustache; dress, light | jacket ( very dirty), dark trousers and short leather leggings. A tramp. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Warlock, Guild- fjrd. WILTSHIRE. 28— Salisbury ( City). — For embezzlement— ALBERT EDWARD DAVIS, age about 28, height 5 ft. G or 7 in, stout build, complexion fresh, full face, hair and slight moustache dark brown, eyes brown. Late an oi'.- tank wagon driver in the employ of the Auglo- American Oil Company, Salisbury depot. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Mathews, Salis- bury. WORCESTERSHIRE. 29.— Worcester ( Citj).- For obtaining f icd and lodgings by false preteucss, on 8. h inst.— ANN or ELIZABETH CORB1N, age about 26, height about 5 ft, hair aid eyes brown, false teeth in upper jiw, speaks with Lancashire accent; dress, black jacket ( puffed sleeves), dark blue skirt, large b'ack velvet hat with two feathers in front, Oxford shoes with blue cloth tops, may be wearing a black wrap or white silk scarf. She calls upon shopkeepers asking to le recommended to lodgings, representing that she is a dressmaker, employed in the town, and has luggage at the railway station. May apply at registry offices as domestic servant. Information to Chief Constable Byrne, Worcester YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING). MURDER. 30. — Wakefield ( Oomty). — For the wilful murder of his wife, at Normanton — WILLIAM MOORE, age 34 or 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion rather sallow, hair dark brown, eyes blue ; has a downcast look; dress, black sacque back jacket, no vest, grey cloth mixture trousers, black felt hat ( too small for him). Native of Normanton. He is of unsound mind, and was discharged from Wakefield Asylum on 17th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Shepley, Wakefield. 31.— Bradford ( Borough). — For failing to report, Supervisee RICHARD NICHOLSON, alias HENRY ACKROYD, RICHARD HENRY NICHOLSON, RICHARD HOLMES, HARRY SMITH, and JOHN COURTNEY, Office No. 44321, age 52, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes grey, proportionate build; chest leen crustei, scar over right eye, anchor on light forearm, lost parn of 4th right finger, scar right forearm, right thigh been fractured, and paralysed right side, flower basket on left forearm, scar on left shin. Sentenced at Bradford Borough Sessions, 12th April 1889, to 5 years penal servitude, and 5 jears police supervision, for felony. Licensed 9th February, 1893. B J P 421. BRECONSHIRE. 32. — Brecon ( County). — Remanded till 27th inst., for obtaining f,. od and lodgings by false pietences— WILLIAM MORGAN, age 47, height 5 ft. 7 in , complexion fresh, round face, hair light ( turning grey), moustache grey, 2 flesh lumps on crown of head, scar left eyebrow, 3 small scars on forehead; dress, black ccat and vest, striped cloth trcusers, black hard hat, lace boots, wore an old metal watch, No. 57876, with white metal chain and compass attached. States that he is a labourer; native of Walford, Ross, Herefordshire, and served 12 years in the 24th Regiment, in came of John Rawson. He obtained lodgings, < tc, under the pretence that he was a surveyor for the water- works company, and was in want of a number of men to woik under him in the neighbourhood. Supposed pteviously convicted and to be wanted for similar offences elsewhere. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Joseph, Brecon. 33— Crickhowell ( County).— Committed for trial at Brecon Assizes for obtaining money, food, and lodgings by false pretences SHEPHERD, alias JOHN BECKER, JOHN KINA, JOSEPH STEIN, LAZARUS, and KAUFMAN, a German, age about SO, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes grey, ruptured light side; dress, serge jacket and vest, tweed trousers, black hard hat. Has been previously convicted at Exeter, Newport Borough, and Monmouth. Supposed wanted for similar offences elsewhere. Information to Supt. Winferson, Crickhowell; or to Sergt. Hand, Brynmaur.
