All announcements for insertion in. the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought toil I he inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if then are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3 Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4 In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the paynent must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. B Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, mill be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of IBs. per portrait, and of Is. Qd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. fi Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of vol ice, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7 Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons tobe apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and at i alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force tah ich causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POI. ICC GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. New Scotland Yard, ly cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OP PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identifica- tion by the Metropolitan Police the Photo- graphs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from Bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door; stealing bale of silk ; van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. SPECIAL NOTICE. Habitual Criminals Registry. UNDER the new system already announced, the second weekly List of Cases within Sections 5, 7, and 8 of the Prevention of Ci ' imes Act appears in these columns to- day. An explanatory circular will shortly be issued by the Home Office on this subject. Meanwhile, the Registrar of Habitual Criminals wishes to inform the Pol ice Forces concerned that he is prepared to supply extra copies of these lists ( separate from the Police Gazette) at a fixed charge. He invitesChief Constables to communicate with him on the subject. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1— Convict Supervision Department. — Woodcut and description of License Holder ALFRED FISK, alias ARTHUR BTSK, Office No. 48659, who is wanted for failing to report, and for attempted larceny ( window open), at 8 a. m., 1st inst., see Case No. 3, 10th inst..: — Age 37, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion pale, bair ( parted in centre) brown, eyes grey, medium build, oval face, slightly pockmarked, moustache ( medium) fair, otherwise generally clean shaved, 3 boil scars on back of neck, Ecar side of left bladebone and back of left forearm; dress, brown Chesterfield or dark ulster coat, grey tweed trousers ( tied below knees), blue striped Oxford shirt, black hard felt bat, some- times a blue serge suit, and blue cloth double- breBsted pilot jacket, or a light drab suit, and light cloth Inverness coat, reaching down to heels, white collar and tie, or a dark rainbow striped muffler. Has undergone three sentences of penal servitude in the Eastern Counties, the last being 5 years for larceny at the Suffolk Assizes, on the 16th Nov, 1891. Licensed 13th September, 1895. E K R 319. He resided from September last till the 6th ult. at a coffee- house, No 96, Upper Grange- road, Ber- mondsey. May be found at coffee or lodging- houses, or committing offences by getting in at open windows early in the morning. On making his escape, 1st inst., he dropped a six- chambered central- fire revolver, No. 2298 on side, 329 bore, solid metal cartiidges ( no maker's name), not owned. 2. — Criminal Investigation Depart- ment.— For embezzling £ 99 Is. 4d., the monies of tho Board of Agriculture— GILBERT HENRY BLIGHT, age 39, height 6 ft., complexion fair, hail', beard, whiskers, and moustache ( cut short) light, eyes blue, thick lips, top of left ear flattened, 3rd finger left hand slightly contracted; dress, dark grey morning coat and vest, brown trousers, dark overcoat, silk bat, lac9 boots. Carried a silk umbrella with wojd handle. Native of South Norwood. Warrant issued. ?— C Division.— For stealing £ 50 — CHAS. YATES, ago 32, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair black, eyes blue; wearing dark rough overcoat, velvet collar, tweed mackintosh and cape. Native of Wolverhampton, where be may visit. 4.— E Division. — For obtaining £ 18 13i. 6d. by a fictitious cheque on the Manchester and Liverpool Bank ( Liverpool Branch), drawn by " Smythe" in favour of " F. Adams"— FREDERICK ADAMS, age 32, leight 5 ft. 9 in, slim build, complexion sillow, hair brown, slight, light moustache, eyes brown ; drjse, da k clothe*, black hard felt hat. Well known at Liverpool. A salesman. Warrant issued. 5.— T Division. — For indecently assaulting a child, age 10— THOMAS CHARLES RA. TTEN- BURY, age 37. height 5 ft. in., slight build, com- plexion fair, hair dirk brown, slight dark moustache, eyes dark ; addicted to drink ; dress, blue overcoat, light trousers, black felt hat. Native of Westminster. Warrant issued. 6. — T Division. — For housebreaking — FREDERICK MERRY, age 2S, height 5 ft, in., T H E POLICE GAZETTE, FRIDAY, JANUARY 17, 1896 complexion, hair, and eyes dark, ship in full sail and cross flags on left forearm, " E. B.," heart, and spear on right forearm, tattooed in red and blue ink ; dress, brown tweed jacket and vest, cord trousers, black bard felt hat, lace boots. A labourer; native of Hounelow. Supposed tramping the country with a barrow, in company of a tinker. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BEDFORDSHIRE. 7— Leighton Buzzard ( County). — For un- lawfully withdrawing himself from his duty as a police constable, on 17th ult.— ARTHUR CAR- RINGTON, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes hazel, wearing dark clothes. Native of Luton. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Anniwell, Leighton Buzzard. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 8.— Cambridge ( Borough). — For larceny, 1st inst. — GEORGE LEVERINGTON ( supposed known at 42, Que en's- street, Rochdale- road, Bury), age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., hair and mous- tache light brown, wore earrings ; dress, dark jacket and vest, cord trousers, blue cap, lace boots.— HUTTAWAY, age about 20, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion and hair dark, wore earrings ; dress, dark cardigan jacket with red stripes, cord vest and trousers, light cloth cap, may be wearing a fustian jacket. Supposed native of Manchester. Navvies; have been employed at Cambridge Sewer- age Works Left Cambridge by the 7.30 a. m. Great Northern Railway train, 3rd inst., for Sheffield. B." ; 1 new white silk hand- kerchief ; 1 cream- colour ditto, red spotted border, pink spot at one corner ; 1 black worsted coat, cloth buttons ; 1 black worsted vest, cloth buttons with bone rim ; 1 pair bluish- colonr striped trousers, fly front, side and hip pockets; 1 gentleman's metal geneva watch; 1 woollen ahirt, " Invincible " and " James Worsley " on tab— ETHEL IEYLAND, or LATHOM, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, usually wears spectacles ; dress, dark fawn check mackintosh with three quarter cape, black straw sailor hat with black band, lace boots. Large, Middlewich. nndervest, white flannel petticoat, calico top, patent leather shoes, wrapped in a petticoat made of various coloured squares— A MAN, age 30 to 40, rather stout build, full whiskers ; dress, black coat, white mole- skin trousers, black hard felt hat. Appearance of a tramping navvy.— A WOMAN, age 30 to 40, medium height; dress, black dress and jacket, red hat with black feathers. Appearance of a tramp. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 13.— Cardiff ( Borongh). — For obtaining, by false pretences, on 9th ult.— 1 lady's three- quarter black jacket; 1 ditto, with large pearl buttons; I ditto, tight fitting, braided across chest, and trimmed with caracule round collar; 1 lady's dark grey mackintosh, with hood ; 1 ditto, black mackin- tosh, with velvet collar— A MAN, age 35 to 40 height 5 ft. 5 in, complexion fair, hair brown small moustache and eyes dark, small face; appear- ance of a groom ; dress, dark overcoat, brown tweed suit, drab gaiters, black hard felt hat. Had with him a liver- and- white spaniel dog, about 6 months old. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff KENT. 19.— Dartford ( County).— For embezzlement 14th ult.— ALBERT JONES, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 in, complexion dark, hair and moustache dark brown ; dress, dark clothes, dark grey over- coat, velvet collar, dark brown felt bat. Carried a black bag. Late a* ent to the British Supply Corporation Limited, Dartford. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Webster, Dartford. 20— Canterbury ( City).— For stealing, 31st ult., an overcoat ( recovered)— A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair light, supposed clean shaved, slightly deaf; dres? dark overccat, light trousers, brown skull cap. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 14. — Gloucester ( County). — For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, and steilicg, 6ih inst., 1 black fine- ribbed cloth overcoat, velvet collar and black lining; 1 black bowler hat; 1 collar and front — WILLIAM THOMPSON ( supposed false), age 55, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in , complexion fair, hair grey ( curly), small features, white coloured scar each side of throat, fleshy lump on forehead very short feet; dress, supposed, blue serge or plbid suit ( large plaid). Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Philpott, Gloucester. 15.— Northleach ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences, through the " Exchange and Mart' newspaper, at Broadwell, on 8th November last, 1 gold engagement ring— R. NORTON, alias CAPTN NORTON, age about 54, height about 5 ft. 10 in slight build, complexion sallow, hair and moustache grizzled grey. He had the ring and letters addressed to 12- 5, Greenwicb- road, Greenwich. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Everiss, Northleach. DURHAM. 10.- South Shields ( Borough). — For shop- breaking, 5thinst., and stealing— 6 lady'scoloured silk scarves ; 6 black- and- white check silk handkerchiefs ; 6 navy- blue silk handkerchiefs, red- and- white spots ; 60 coloured do., figured ; 12 tartan do. do., Victoria, and Stuart; 6 check ditto ditto, different colours ; 6 shot ditto ditto, different colours ; 6 white figured ditto; 6 cream ditto ditto, prices marked on tickets in plain figux- es, private mark B or X in parenthesis— A MAN, age 23 to 25, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion dark, slight dark moustache, wearing brown overcoat, dark clothes, and black hard felt hat. 11— South Shields ( Borough), r- Absconded from the woikhouse on the 17th ult., while under detention pending removal to reformatory school— WILLTAM JACKSON, age 15, height 4 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes hazel, cataract on one ( supposed left) ; dress, rather long dark grey jacket, dark grey vest and trousers, anel light cap A newsvendor. HAMPSHIRE. 16.— Southampton ( Borough).— For stealing £ 5 10s.— JAMES CHANNEL, age 4b, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, red face, hair brown light moustache, right leg has been injured causing slight lameness, carries head forward fonel of drink ; dress, black waterproof o-\ coat, dark coat and vest, dark navy- blue serge trousers, black hard felt hat, heavy lace boot, stand upc; llar. A labourer; native of Southampton. Warrant issued. 17.— Southampton ( Borough).— For breaking out of an hotel and stealing £ 27— MAX FISCHER, a Russian, age about 19, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., stout build, complexion sallow, hair ( inclined to curl and hangs over forehead) dark brown, clean shaved, eyes blue, flat nose; dress, brown overcoat, tweed trousers, brown skull cap, may be wearing a blue shirt ( stolen) with " Perkins " thereon ; a waiter. May be found at Liverpool, or in the neighbourhood of Leman- street, Whitechapel. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Berry, South- ampton. hension is sought fcr obtaining a cheque for £ 15 by false pretences, ou 2nd August last— Age about 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., hair ( turning grey) and bushy beard black. A master mariner; lately employed on a vessel trading between England and Spain. Information to Chief Constable Buck, Margate. LANCASHIRE. 22.— Rochdale ( Borough).— For stealing 7th inst., from an hotel— 1 watch, 1 brooch ( recovered) and 1 lady's gold guard, double link pattern, with pendant representing " Faith, Hope and Coarity"— JOSEPH or HARRY BRISCOE, alias BRICE, FRED MURRAY, and BESWlCK; uge about 20, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes ( supposed) blue; has a habit of stretching his held forward and contorting himself when in conversation; dress, long light favn overcoat, light grey coat and vest ( latter very open), fawn and brown check trousers, black billycock hat, fawn cloth leggings. A comedian. Has cards in his possession bearing the name " Nat Clifford, the nimble one," agents " 0 ivor and Holmes, 20, York- road. London," S. E." May be found at good hotels and temperance houses. Supposed identical with H. Rickards, or Murray, Case No. 35, 3rd inst., and man described in Case No. 44, 10th inst. A native of Manchester. Has worked as boots at hotels and at hotel stables ; will seek similar employment. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ovens, Leominster. LEICESTERSHIRE. 23.— Leicester ( Borough).— Fcr embezzling £ 7 18s.— WALTER WISE, age 18, height 5 ft. 7or 8 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark, eyes brown. Has been employed as a baker's vanman. Warrant issued. 24. — Leicester ( Borough). — For slealiDg 1 gentleman's 9- ct. gold albert, thick plain secret- link pattern, with seal attached ; 1 gold ring, set purple stone; 1 gold nee- klet and locket; 1 gold brooch, thistle pattern; and 1 brooch, enamelled crown- piece- BARN ET LEVI, a Russian Jew, age 22, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion pale, hair and slight moustache black, low forehead, pockmarked ; dress, brown tweed suit, light brown overcoat, brown hat, A tailor. T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 11 MONTGOMERYSHIRE. 25.— Llanidloes ( County). — For stealing a leather bag purse, containing £ 7 gold and 10). silver — THOMAS WALDREN, sge atout 21, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in , complexion pale, hair light, eyes grey ( large) ; dress, dark blue serge jacket, brown cord trousers, brown cloth vest, light cap with flaps, strong nailed boots, short black leather leggings. May be found at Kecsington, London, or at some seaport. A labourer or sailor ; native of London. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Lake, Llanidloes. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 26— Daventry ( County).— For sheep- stealing, at Slaverton, on 23rd December, 1895— WILLIAM ALBUT, alias SOLDIER BILL, BRUMMEY, STAFFORD, and JUMBO, age 29, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, bald spot ( about size of shilling) on top of head, quantity of hair on arms ; dress, black jacket, light cord trousers and vest, light cip, red- and- black woollen shirt, heavy lace boots, soldier's belt. An Army Reservist of the Worcestershire Regi ment.— And a man, known as SLEN, age 24, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion pale, hair, whiskers ( about a week's growth) and moustache light biown, lost end of one big toe, walks slightly lame, lump ( size of a marble) bick of left wrist, which has been broken and not properly set; dre3s, pilot jacket, light cord trousers, cardigan jacket, vest over same, leavy Jace boots. Have been employed as banksmen at Catesby Tunnel. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hustler, Daventry. 31.— Watlington ( County).— For assault at War- borough, on 3rd inst.— A MAN, aga about 43, height ft. 10 in., hair, beard, and moustache dark brown ; dress, dark blue pilot coat, brown waistcoat, light fustian or < ord trousers, black hard felt hat. Carried a small bundle in a red handkerchief, aud had an old tin can slang over his shoulder. A tramp. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hawtin, Watlington. SHROPSHIRE. 32.— Wellington ( County).— For steaiing, 26th ult., at Newport, a man's single- breasted black cloth coat, much worn, black bone buttons, cuffs bound with braid, and an old striped cloth vest— EDWARD PREST, ago 22^, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair, moustache and eyes brown. A carpenter; native of Wilmslow, Cheshire — GEORGE ERNEST HALL, age 24£, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair and small monetache brown, eyes hazel. A fitter; native of Bolton, Lancashire. Both are deserters from Royal En- gineers, and one may be wearing stolen clothes. Warraut issued. Information to Chit f Supt. Edwards, Wellington. eyes grey, rolling gait; dress, grey jacket, dark vest, grey check trousers, dark wrap, dark cap, nearly new lace boots. Native of Keymer. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Smith, Hay ward's Heath. 38 — Brighton ( Borough).— For stealing, lO. h inst, a cash- box containing £ 28 gold and silver CHARLES GEORGE HUMPHREYS JEPFORD, age 24, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout huild, complexion fair, hair and slight moustache light, slight scar on eyebrow. A clerk, and a good shorthand writer; will probably answer advertisements a9 such, stating that he has been to Canada for the pa9t five years, and cannot give any references. Fond of gambling. Is a good pianist. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Carter, Brighton. 39.— Eastbourne ( Borough).— For embezzle- ment— WILLIAM ANKINS, alias JOHNSON, age 13, height 4 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, com- plexion rather pale, thin face, hair light, eyes light blue ; dress, when last seen, brown overcoat, light trousers, leather gaiters, light cloth cap. An errand boy ; native of Hastings. Absconded 1st inst. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Plumb, East- bourne. NORTHUMBERLAND. 27.— Wooler ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), 1 watchmaker's eye- glass; 2 watch hand files ; 3 clock brushes; 1 watch dit. o; 1 pin vice; 1 pair pliers; 1 pair of nippers; 1 clock screwdriver; 1 pair tweezers ; 1 set of punches in box ; 1 drill stock; 18 watch pointers; 12 sesond pDinters; 1 watsh hammer; 2 block files; 1 pair callipers; 1 blow- pipe; 1 bjttle of oil; 4 clock springs; 1 dczen brooch pins ; 1 black leather tool bag ; and a quantity of small materials, used for clock and watch repairing— JOSEPH FLYNN, age 24, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, slight moustache, eyes grey, recant cut mark on right side of nose, thick lips, round- shouldered; dress, when last seen, dark grey coat and vest, grey trousers and cap. A travelling watch and clock cleaner, speaks with Liverpool dialect. Warrant issued. Information to Captain Terry, Chief Constable, Morpeth; or to Supt. Kennedy, Wooler. 28.— Berwick- On- Tweed ( Borough). — For obtaining goods by false pretences — PETER SMITH, age 23, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown ; dress, dark tweed jacket and trousers, grey peak cap. Native of Dunkeld. Stated he had worked at Balmoral Gardens.
