All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable ihe article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of\ bs. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. " Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to he inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Insnectnr or ivaloanvs thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons tobe apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and a\ i alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property tobe inserted t n the Ponce GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noonon Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They mutt be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Sew Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond $ Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identifica- tion by the Metropolitan Police the Photo- graphs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from Bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door; stealing bale of silk; van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. SPECIAL NOTICE. THE SECRETARY OF STATE has transferred the Habitual Criminals' Registry to New Scotland Yard, and has appointed the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department to be Registrar of Habitual Criminals. The annual volume hitherto compiled by the Habitual Criminals Registry will not be issued after 1895, but in lieu of it " A List of Persons coming within the © " provisions of Sections 5, 7, and 8 of the " Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871, dis- " charged, or about to be discharged from " Convict and other Prisons," will be issued every week. These lists will appear weekly in the Police Gazette, and the first of the series is published in these columns to- day. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1-— C Division.— For being concerned with George Kemp, in custody for obtaining jewellery by means of a worthless cheque— J. F. CLARK, alias TOM SMITH, GIPSY SMITH, and " TOM, THE BARMAN," age 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion florid, hair ( bald on top) brown, thick moustache dark brown; 1 dress, blue melton overcoat, with velvet collar, dark striped trousers, black- and- brown check vest. Warrant issued. 2.— L Division.— For stealing a portable har- monium by means of a trick— FREDERICK GAY, alias CHANTER, age 30, height 5 fc. G or 7 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, moustache light, waxed at ends, rather deaf, has a habit of twitching his eyes; dress, brown tweed overcoat with cape, steel- grey frock coat under, dark striped tweed trousers, blue linen vest, with white flowers and flat brass buttons, dark grey cap, wide sole lace boots. A good musician; is likely to be found at Manchester. 3.— p Division. — For failing to report, and attempted larceny ( dwelling) — License Holder ALFRED FISK, Office No. 48659, age 37, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion pale, hair brown, fair mous- tache, no whiskers, medium build, oval face, slightly pockmarked, 3 boil scars on back of neck, Ecar side of left bladebone, and back of It forearm; dress, brown Chesterfield or dark ulster coat, grey tweed trousers ( tied below knees), blue striped Oxford shirt, black hard felt hat, sometime a blue serge suit, and blue cloth double- breasted pilot jacket, or a light drab suit and light cloth Inverness coat reaching down to heels, white callar and tie, or a dark rain- bow striped muffler. Left behind a six - chambered revolver, central fire, No. 2298 on side 320 bore, no maker's name. Lrdgad at a coffee shop in B> rmondsey, from September until the 6th ult. May be found in coffee or lodging houses. Sentenced at Suffolk Assizes, 16th November, 1891, to 5 years penal servitude for larceny. Licensed 13th September, 1895. E K R 319. 4. — Y Division. — For obtaining goods by fraud— ADA KEYS, alias KNIGHT, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., slim build, complexion pale, hair dark, eyes blue; dress, brown tweed skirt and bodice, brown mantle, dark hat. Native of Hackney; is well known at Brighton. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BEDFORDSHIRE. 5— Leighton Buzzard ( County). — For un- lawfully withdrawing himself from his duty as a police constable, on 17th ult.— ARTHUR CAR- RINGTON, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes hazel, wearing dark clothes. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 6. — Cambridge ( Borough). — For larceny, 1st inst.— GEORGE LEVERINGTON ( supposed known at 42, Queen's- street, Rochdale- road, Bary), age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., hair and mous- tache light brown, wore earrings ; dress, dark jacket and vest, cord trousers, blue cap, lace boots.— HUTTAWAY, age about 20, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion and hair dark, wore earrings; dress, dark cardigan jacket with red stripes, cord vest and trouserB, light cloth cap, may be wearing a fustian jacket. Supposed native of Manchester. Navvies; have been employed at Cambridge Sewer- age Works. Left Cambridge by the 7.30 a. m. Great Northern Railway train, 3rd inst., for Sheffield. DURHAM. 8. — South Shields ( Borough). — For stop- breaking, 5th inst., and stealing— 6 lady'scoloured silk ecarves ; 6 black- and- white check silk handkerchiefs ; 6 navy- blue silk handkerchiefs, red- and- white spots ; 60 coloured do., figured ; 12 tartan do. do., Victoria and Stuart ; 6 check ditto ditto, different colours ; 6 shot ditto ditto, different colours; 6 white figured ditto; 6 cream ditto ditto, prices marked on tickets in plain figures, private mark B or X in parenthesis— A MAN, age 23to 25, height 5 It. 5 in., Btout build, complexion dark, slight dark moustache, wearing brown overcoat, dark clothes, and black hard felt hat. 9.— South Shields ( Borough). — Absconded from the woikhouse on the 17th ult., while under detention pending removal to reformatory school— WILLIAM JACKSON, age 15, height 4 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes hazel, cataract on one ( supposed left) ; dress, rather long dirk grey jacket, dark grey vest and trousers, and light cap. ESSEX. 10.— Brentwood ( County).— For abandoning, at Romford, 3rd inst., a male child, age about 2^, very thin, bow- legged ; dress, marono frock, grey undervest, white flannel petticoat, calico top, patent leather shoes, wrapped in a petticoat made of various coloured squares— A MAN, age 30 to 40, rather stout build, full whiskers ; dress, black coat, white mole- skin trousers, black hard felt hat. Appearance of a tramping navvy.— A WOMAN, age 30 to 40, medium height; dress, black dress and jacket, red hat with black feathers. Appearance of a tramp. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 11.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For obtaining 10s. by false pretences— A MAN, age about 45, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, long features, hair ( bald on top) inclined to be red, clean shaved, stoops a little; speaks broken English ; dress, brown reefer jacket, brown jersey, dark trousers and cap, elastic- side boots. He obtained the money from his landlady, on the pretence of sending a telegram to Stockholm, leaving as security a sealed packet, which he stated contained § 62 in U. S. A. currency, but which was found to contain 2d. and a quantity of pap? r, folded to represent bank rotes. He professes to be a member of the Swedish Salvation Army, and may be found at Salvation Army meetings, shipping offices, or temperance hotels. Supposed to be a Scandinavian seaman. Absconded Ist inst. Warrant issued. 12— Cardiff ( Borongh). — For obtaining, by false pretences, on 9th ult.— 1 lady's three- quarter black jacket; 1 ditto, with large pearl buttons; I ditto, tight fitting, braided across chest, and trimmed with caracole round collar; 1 lady's dark grey mackintosh, with hood ; I ditto, black mackin- tosh, with velvet collar— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 5 in, complexion fair, hair brown, small moustache and eyes dark, small fa3e ; appear- ance of a groom; dress, dark overcoat, brown tweed suit, drab gaiters, black hard felt hat. Had with him a liver- and- white spaniel dog, about 6 months old. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable MeKenzie, Cardiff. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 13. — Gloucester ( County). — For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, and steiling, 6th inst., 1 black fine- ribbed cloth overcoat, velvet collar and black lining; 1 black bowler hat; 1 collar and front — WILLIAM THOMPSON ( supposed false), age 55, height, 5 ft 4 or 5 in , complexion fair, hair grey ( curly), pmall features, white coloured scar each side of throat, fleshy lump on forehead, very short feet,; dress, supposed, blue serge or plaid snit ( large plail). Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constab'e Philpott, Gloucester. HAMPSHIRE. 14— Southampton ( Borough).— For breaking out of an hotel and stealing £ 27— MAX FISCHER, a Russian, age about 19, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., stout build, complexion sallow, hair ( inclined t > curl and hangs over forehead) dark brown, clean shaved, eyes blue, flit nose; dress, brown overcoat, tweed trousers, brown skull cap, may he wearing a blue shirt ( stolen) with " Perkins" thereon; a waiter. May be found at Liverpool, or in the neighbourhood of Leman- street, Whiteuhapel. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Berry, South- ampton. KENT. 15.— Dartford ( County).— For embezzlement, 14th ult.- ALBERT JONES, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 in , complexion dark, hair and moustache dark brown ; dress, dark clothes, dark grey over- coat, velvet collar, dark brown felt hat. Carried a black bag. Late agent to the British Supply Corporation Limited, Dartford. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Webster, Dartford. 16.— Canterbury ( City).— For Stealing, 31st ult., an ovtrcoat. ( recovered)— A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair light, supposed clean shaved, slightly deaf; dress, dark overccat, light tr< usera, brown skull cap. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Canter- bury. 17. — Margate ( Borough). — Portrait and de- scription of THOMAS E. ANGELL, whose appre- hension is sought fcr obtaining a cheque for £ 15 by false pretences, on 2nd August last— Age about 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., hair ( turning grey) and busby beard black. A master mariner; lately employed on a vessel trading between England and Spain. Information to Chief Constable Back, Margate. LANCASHIRE. 18.— Salford ( Borough).— For failing to report — License Holder THOMAS WHIDDALL, alias WOODALL, JOHN BRIXTON, GILES, ED- WARDS, and PHILBT. Office No. 48397, age 44, height 6 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scar right of forehead, left cheek, on [ nose, back of bead and neck, on ri^ ht shoulder, right elbow, 2 hack of left arm and wrist, and 1 in right groin, face slightly pockmarked, varicose veins both legs, bunions on both big toes. Sentenced at North London Sessions, 20th March, 1893, to 3 years penal servitude for larceny ( person). Licensed 10th July, 1895. LEICESTERSHIRE. 20.— Leicester ( Borough).— For embezzling £ 7 18s.— WALTER WISE, ago 18, height 5 ft. 7or 8 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark, ejes brown. Has been employed as a baker's vanman. Warrant issued. 21. — Leicester ( Borough). — For stealing 1 gentleman's 9- ct. gold albert, thick plain secret- link pattern, with seal attached ; 1 gold ring, set purple stone; 1 gold necklet and locket; I gold brooch, thistle pittern; and 1 brcoch, enamelled crown- piece- BARNET LEVI, a Russian Jew, age 22, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion pale, hair and slight moustache black, low forehead, pockmarked ; dress, brown tweed suit, light brown overcoat, brown hat. A tailor. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leicester. MONTGOMERYSHIRE. 22.— Llanidloes ( County). — For stealing a leather bag purse, containing £ 7 gold and 10). silver — THOMAS WALDREN, age about 21, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in , complexion pale, hair light, eyes grey ( large) ; dress, dark blue serge jacket, brown cord trousers, brown cloth vest, light cap with flaps, strong nailed boots, short black leather leggings. May be found at Kensington, London, or at some seaport. A labourer or sailor; native of London. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Lake, Llanidloes. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 24.— Daventry ( County).— For sheep- stealing, at Slaverton, on 23rd December, 1895— WILLIAM ALBUT, alias SOLDIER BILL, BRUMMEY, STAFFORD, and JUMBO, age 29, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, bald spot ( about size of shilling) on top of head, quantity of hair on arms ; dress, black jacket, light cord trousers and vest, light cap, red- and- blac'i woollen shirt, heavy lace boots, soldier's belt. OXFORDSHIRE. 25.— Caversham ( County).— For stealing, between 3rd and 8th ult, 1 silver Geneva watch, open face, gold minu'o han't, No. 203237, maker " Samuels"— JOHN S. MILLS, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 in. complexion fresh, hair ( thin on top) dark, turning grey, moustachi black, eyes dark; dress, dark blue overcoat, velvet collar, shabby blue serge jacket and vest, black hard hat, lo Y shoes. Native of Luggershall, Hants, is known at Great Marlow. Has served in the Army, and belongs to the City of London Militia. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Hope, Caversham. SHROPSHIRE. 23.— Wellington ( County).— For stealing, 26tlr ult., at Newport, a man's single- breasted black cloth coat, much worn, black bone buttons, cuffs bound with braid, and an old striped cloth vest— EDWARD PREST, ago 22|-. height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair, moustache and eyes brown. A carpenter; native of Wilmslow, Cheshire — GEORGE ERNEST HALL, age 24^, height 5 ft. 7j in., complexion fresh, bair and small moustache brown, eyes hazel. A fitter; native of Bolten, Lancashire. STAFFORDSHIRE. 27.— Brownhills ( County).— For larceny, 28th ult, at Canrock— NATHAN TAYLOR, alias TOM SMITH, age about 36, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., com- plexion dark, hair dark brown, heavy moustache dark; dress, light cloth jacket and vest, dark cloth trousers, light cloth cap, old brown shoes. SUSSEX ( EAST). 28— East Grinstead ( County).— For stealing a very dark brown gelding cob, 6 years, 14 hands, little white on neir hind fetlock, bare p'a- e under belly, short docked, cribber, and has strap mark roand neck; a set of plain brown leather harness, brass buckle?, and a village catt, plain varnished body, wheels and shafts green, picked out light green, only one lamp, braffl whip socket, black whip and waterproof ru^— A MAN, age 36 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in , rather stout build, complexion, hair, and eyes dark, clean shaved ; appearance of a coach- man ; dress, black suit, overcoat, black felt hat. Relf, East Grinstead. 29.— Hayward's Heath ( County).— For bur- glary, and stealing, 2od inst., at Hassocks— I grey woollen cloak with hood, " Cleaver & Robins, Bel- fast " on tab; 1 pair dark spectacles; 1 pair sur- gical folding scissors, ivory handles; 1 pair grey stockings made like gloves at toes ; 1 brown leather purse with steel clasp.— FREDERICK CRAGG, age 25, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion, hair, mous- tache and eyes dark ; dress, rough dark jacket, grey trousers, dark wrap, dark cap. A native of Has- socks.— HARRY FIELD, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, slight moustache, eyes grey, rolling gait; dres% grey jacket, dark vest, gr^ y check trousers, dark wrap, dark cap, nearly new laca boots. Informat'on to Deputy Chief Constable Smith, Hayward's Heath. 30.— Eastbourne ( Borough).— For embezzle- ment— WILLIAM ANKINS, alias JOHNSON, age 13, height 4 ft, 7 or 8 in, slight build, com- plexion rather pale, thin face, hair light, eyes light blue; drese, when last seen, brown overcoat, light trousers, leather gaiters, light cloth cap. An errand boy ; native of Hastings. Absconded 1st inst. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Plumb, East- bourne. SUSSEX ( WEST). 31.— Horsham ( County).— For larceny ( person), 21st nit.— ALBERT SMITH, age about 2i, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hiir brown, eyes grey, tattooed woman's bust left forearm, other tattoo marks on right. Snpposed to have been dis- charged from the Army through injury to left ankle, which causes slight lameness. May seek emp'oyrnent as cowman, and produce refeience signed " Bernard Lintot>, Horsham." Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Byrne, Horsham.
